Zophar: Destruction Awaits the Wicked

Then

Then Zophar the Naamathite replied to Job’s defense against the accusations of his friends.

Job 18:1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
Job 21:1 Then Job answered:

Zophar

Zophar, whose name may mean “chirping” or “to leap,” the third of Job’s friends, speaks with particular severity, insisting that suffering is the fate of the wicked.

Job 11:1 Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
Job 11:2 Should this stream of words go unanswered…

the Naamathite

Zophar the Naamathite is identified by his homeland, distinguishing him from the other speakers gathered around Job.

Job 2:11 Now when Job’s three friends came from their homes…
Job 42:9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, …

replied:

Zophar begins his second speech, sharply responding to Job’s claim that the wicked often prosper and that his suffering is not proof of guilt.

Job 6:1 Then Job replied:
Job 19:1 Then Job answered:

“So my anxious thoughts compel me to answer,

Zophar’s distress drives him to speak again after Job’s defense of his integrity. Convinced that God governs the world by rewarding the righteous and punishing the wicked, he views Job’s arguments as a challenge to divine justice. His urgency reveals both his confidence in his own understanding and his inability to account for Job’s suffering within that framework.

Job 32:18 For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me.
Psa 39:3 My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned.…
Jer 20:9 “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name…”…

because of the turmoil within me.

Zophar’s inward agitation reflects the growing conflict between Job and his friends. Rather than listening to Job’s plea for an explanation beyond personal guilt, Zophar prepares to restate the belief that the prosperity of the wicked is brief and their judgment certain. His response advances the debate that will ultimately expose the limits of human judgment before God.

Psa 42:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me?…
Psa 55:4-5 My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death…
Psa 38:8 I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.

I have heard a rebuke that insults me,

Zophar takes Job’s words as a personal affront, believing that Job has dishonored both him and the wisdom shared by his friends. The debate has grown increasingly sharp as Job rejects their conclusion that his suffering proves hidden sin.

Ecc 7:5 It is better to heed a wise man’s rebuke…
Pro 27:5 Better an open rebuke than love that is concealed.
Psa 69:7 For I have endured scorn for Your sake,……

and my understanding prompts a reply.

Convinced that God rewards the righteous and judges the wicked, Zophar believes he must answer Job’s challenge. His confidence rests on traditional human wisdom, yet the events surrounding Job show that suffering cannot always be explained by personal wrongdoing.

Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,…
Psa 49:3 My mouth will impart wisdom, and the meditation of my heart…
Job 32:18 For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me.

Do you not know

Zophar appeals to knowledge he considers obvious, pressing Job to recognize a pattern understood throughout human history.

Job 8:8-10 Please inquire of past generations and consider…
Psa 78:3-4 that we have heard and known and our fathers…
Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…

that from antiquity,

He grounds his argument in the enduring testimony of past generations, insisting that God’s moral order has not changed.

Job 15:7-8 Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth…
Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small…
Pro 8:22-23 The LORD created me as His first course,…

since man was placed on the earth,

From humanity’s beginning under God’s rule, Zophar maintains that the prosperity of the wicked has been brief and their judgment certain.

Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground…
Gen 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image,…
Psa 8:4-6 what is man that You are mindful of him?…

the triumph of the wicked has been brief

The wicked may gain power, wealth, or public honor for a season, but their success does not escape God’s judgment. Assyria and Babylon rose as instruments of discipline against Israel and Judah, yet both empires were later brought down for their violence, pride, and idolatry.

Psa 37:10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…
Psa 73:18-20 Surely You set them on slick ground; …
Psa 92:7 that though the wicked sprout like grass,…

and the joy of the godless momentary?

Their pleasure is short-lived because it rests on possessions, influence, and rebellion rather than on God. Job’s friends understood that outward prosperity could conceal coming judgment, though they wrongly applied that principle to Job’s suffering.

Heb 11:25 He chose to suffer oppression with God’s people…
Jas 4:9 Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning…
Pro 14:13 Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end…

Though his arrogance reaches the heavens,

Zophar describes the wicked as exalting himself beyond proper human limits, as though his power and security could rival God’s rule. His success may appear lofty and untouchable, but it remains temporary and subject to God’s judgment.

Jer 51:53 Even if Babylon ascends to the heavens…
Gen 11:4 “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city”…
Oba 1:4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest…

and his head touches the clouds,

The image completes the picture of a man consumed by self-importance. Even at the height of his prosperity, he cannot escape the certainty of downfall. Zophar’s warning is that no position, wealth, or reputation can preserve the unrepentant wicked when God brings judgment.

Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;…
Psa 36:5 Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,…
Psa 57:10 For Your loving devotion reaches to the heavens,…

he will perish forever,

The wicked man’s ruin is final, ending his power, security, and influence under God’s judgment.

Psa 92:7 that though the wicked sprout like grass,…
Psa 37:20 But the wicked and enemies of the LORD will perish…
2Th 1:9 They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction,…

like his own dung;

Though he may have been honored or feared, he will be cast aside in disgrace as something worthless and unclean.

2Ki 9:37 And Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field…
Psa 83:10 who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground.
1Ki 14:10 Because of all this, behold, I am bringing disaster……

those who had seen him will ask, ‘Where is he?’

His disappearance will be so complete that those who once knew him will search in vain for any trace of his former prominence.

Psa 37:10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…
Psa 37:36 yet he passed away and was no more; though I searched,…
Psa 103:16 when the wind passes over, it vanishes…

He will fly away like a dream,

Zophar portrays the wicked person’s apparent security as brief and unreal, disappearing as quickly as a dream upon waking. Wealth, influence, and comfort gained apart from God cannot provide lasting stability.

Psa 90:10 The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty…
Psa 73:20 Like one waking from a dream, so You, O Lord,…

never to be found;

His downfall leaves no enduring place, power, or reputation. What he built through evil is removed, and his memory does not preserve him as one blessed by God.

Psa 37:10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…
Job 8:18 If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him…
Psa 103:16 when the wind passes over, it vanishes…

he will be chased away like a vision in the night.

God’s judgment drives him from the position he once held. Like a night vision that fades with the coming of morning, the wicked man’s success vanishes completely.

Job 33:15-16 In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep…
Isa 29:7-8 All the many nations going out to battle against Ariel…
Dan 2:19 During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel…

The eye that saw him

Job describes the sudden removal of the wicked from public view. Those who once observed his wealth, influence, and apparent security will no longer find him among the living. Human prominence, however visible for a time, cannot prevent death.

Psa 37:36 yet he passed away and was no more; though I searched,…
Isa 38:11 I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD…”…
Psa 39:13 Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered…

will see him no more,

Death ends a person’s participation in the affairs of this world. The wicked man’s power, plans, and reputation cannot preserve him when God brings his life to an end.

Job 7:8 The eye that beholds me will no longer see me.…
Psa 49:19 he will join the generation of his fathers…
Psa 31:12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind.…

and his place

His home, community, and former sphere of authority remain, but he is gone. The places associated with his success do not retain his presence or secure his legacy.

Job 7:10 He never returns to his house; his place…
Psa 103:16 when the wind passes over, it vanishes…
Psa 37:10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…

will no longer behold him.

His disappearance is complete. Job’s warning is that earthly prosperity can vanish swiftly, leaving behind neither lasting control nor immunity from God’s judgment.

Job 18:18 He is driven from light into darkness…
Job 18:17 The memory of him perishes from the earth,…
Ecc 9:6 Their love, their hate, and their envy…

His sons will seek the favor of the poor,

The wicked man’s downfall reaches beyond his own lifetime. His children, once sustained by his wealth and influence, are brought low and must depend on those their family formerly despised. What seemed secure through inherited prosperity proves unstable under God’s judgment.

Psa 109:10 May his children wander as beggars, seeking sustenance…
Psa 37:25 I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen…
Lam 4:4 The nursing infant’s tongue clings in thirst…

for his own hands must return his wealth.

The man who gained wealth through oppression or dishonesty cannot keep it. His own hands emphasize his personal accountability, and he is forced to surrender what he unjustly acquired. His riches provide no lasting protection when God brings his wrongdoing to light.

Ecc 2:26 To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom…
Pro 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,…
Job 27:16-17 Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a wardrobe…

The youthful vigor

Zophar portrays the strength and confidence of a man in his prime, often displayed in the prosperity and self-assurance of the wicked.

Pro 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength, and gray hair…
Isa 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble…
Job 21:23 One man dies full of vigor, completely secure and at ease.

that fills his bones

His vitality seems to reach to the depths of his body, giving the appearance of lasting power.

Job 21:24 His body is well nourished, and his bones…
Pro 3:8 This will bring healing to your body and refreshment…
Psa 38:3 There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger;…

will lie down with him

Yet death brings that strength to an end; it cannot preserve him from judgment or the grave.

Job 14:12 so a man lies down and does not rise.…
Deu 31:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…
2Sa 7:12 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…

in the dust.

Like all mankind, he returns to the dust, and the vigor in which he trusted dies with him.

Job 17:16 Will it go down to the gates of Sheol?…
Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…
Gen 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread,…

Though evil is sweet in his mouth

Zophar describes the wicked as taking pleasure in wrongdoing, savoring it as something desirable. Sin may offer immediate satisfaction, but its appeal is temporary and conceals its destructive end.

Pro 20:17 Food gained by fraud is sweet to a man,…
Pro 9:17 “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is tasty!”
Pro 5:3 Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey…

and he conceals it under his tongue,

Like a choice morsel kept in the mouth, evil is deliberately cherished and hidden. The wicked person does not merely fall into sin but guards it inwardly, refusing to expose or forsake it.

Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence…
Psa 140:3 They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers…
Rom 3:13 Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit…

though he cannot bear to let it go

Zophar portrays the wicked as clinging to evil because they value its temporary pleasure, even while its outcome is ruin. Their refusal to release sin reveals a settled attachment to what God condemns.

Pro 9:17 “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is tasty!”
Pro 20:17 Food gained by fraud is sweet to a man,…
Pro 2:14 those who enjoy doing evil and rejoice in the twistedness…

and keeps it in his mouth,

Like a person savoring food, the wicked deliberately relish their wrongdoing and keep returning to it. What seems satisfying for a moment will soon become bitter, for sin ultimately brings God’s judgment rather than lasting joy.

Pro 18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels…
Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence…
Psa 140:3 They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers…

yet in his stomach

The wicked may enjoy the gains of evil for a time, but their hidden corruption soon brings distress. What seemed satisfying becomes a source of inward ruin.

Ezk 3:3 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat and fill your stomach”…
Pro 18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels…
Psa 109:18 The cursing that he wore like a coat, may it soak…

his food sours

The pleasures and profits obtained through sin do not remain sweet. They turn against the one who trusted in them, bringing bitterness, guilt, and judgment.

Rev 10:10 So I took the small scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it…
Pro 20:17 Food gained by fraud is sweet to a man,…
Isa 24:9 They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink…

into the venom of cobras

Zophar compares sin’s outcome to deadly poison. The wicked man’s apparent success carries within it the means of his destruction.

Deu 32:33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison…
Psa 58:4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake,…
Psa 140:3 They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers…

within him.

The consequences of evil reach beyond outward circumstances, affecting the sinner’s inner life and leading toward death unless he turns from his sin.

Psa 5:9 For not a word they speak can be trusted;…
Mic 6:14 You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger…
Act 8:23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness…

He swallows wealth

Zophar portrays the wicked as greedily taking in riches, often through oppression or deceit, as though wealth could satisfy every desire.

Jer 51:34 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured me;…
Ecc 5:13-14 There is a grievous evil I have seen under the sun:…
Psa 52:7 Look at the man who did not make God his refuge,…

but vomits it out;

What he has taken cannot remain with him. His gain turns to loss and disgrace rather than security.

Pro 23:8 You will vomit up what little you have eaten…
Jer 48:26 “Make him drunk, because he has magnified himself”…
Jon 2:10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah…

God will force it from his stomach.

God judges the wicked and removes the wealth they have unjustly acquired. Zophar presents this as the certain outcome of evil, though Job’s suffering shows that such judgment is not always immediate or visible.

Jer 51:44 I will punish Bel in Babylon. I will make him spew out…
Psa 49:17 For when he dies, he will carry nothing away;…
Ecc 5:15 As a man came from his mother’s womb, so he will depart…

He will suck the poison of cobras;

Zophar portrays the wicked man as bringing ruin upon himself. The image is of someone willingly taking in a deadly substance, reflecting his embrace of evil and its destructive effects. Cobras were feared in the ancient world because their venom could bring swift death.

Deu 32:33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison…
Psa 58:4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake,…
Psa 140:3 They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers…

the fangs of a viper will kill him.

The result of his wickedness is certain and fatal. As a viper’s bite delivers death, the consequences of sin overtake the man who persists in it. Zophar’s warning emphasizes that evil does not remain harmless but leads to judgment and destruction.

Gen 49:17 He will be a snake by the road, a viper in the path…
Pro 23:32 In the end it bites like a snake and stings like a viper.
Num 21:6 So the LORD sent venomous snakes among the people…

He will not enjoy the streams,

Zophar portrays the wicked man as cut off from the abundance he sought through wrongdoing. Streams sustained life, fields, and herds, making them a fitting picture of security and prosperity.

Ecc 6:2 God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor,…
Psa 49:17 For when he dies, he will carry nothing away;…
Luk 12:20-21 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night…

the rivers flowing with honey and cream.

Even the richest provisions of the land will not be his to enjoy. His apparent success ends in loss, showing that wealth gained by oppression cannot preserve him from God’s judgment.

Deu 32:13-14 He made him ride on the heights of the land…
Deu 8:7-9 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…
Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians…

He must return the fruit of his labor without consuming it;

Zophar describes the certain loss awaiting the wicked. Wealth gained through oppression, fraud, or exploitation will not remain in their hands for enjoyment. God’s justice requires restitution, exposing the emptiness of prosperity built on sin.

Deu 28:30-31 You will be pledged in marriage to a woman.…
Psa 109:11 May the creditor seize all he owns, and strangers plunder…
Pro 5:10 lest strangers feast on your wealth, and your labors enrich…

he cannot enjoy the profits of his trading.

Commercial success cannot shield the wicked from judgment. Though dishonest dealings may appear profitable for a time, their gains bring no lasting security, satisfaction, or peace. The outcome confirms that God governs human affairs and holds wrongdoing accountable.

Jas 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow…
Ecc 6:2 God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor,…
Hag 1:6 You have planted much but harvested little…

For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor;

Zophar describes the wicked as using power and wealth to exploit those unable to defend themselves. The poor were especially vulnerable in the ancient world, and neglecting them revealed a hardened disregard for God’s justice.

Psa 109:16 For he never thought to show kindness,…
Pro 14:31 Whoever oppresses the poor taunts their Maker,…
Pro 22:22-23 Do not rob a poor man because he is poor,…

he has seized houses he did not build.

He also portrays the wicked as taking homes and property by force or fraud. Houses and land represented family security and inheritance, so such theft brought ruin upon others. Zophar warns that prosperity gained through injustice cannot shield the wicked from God’s judgment.

Mic 2:2 They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses.…
Isa 5:8 Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field…
Jer 22:13 Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,…

Because his appetite is never satisfied,

Zophar describes the wicked as driven by unchecked desire. Though he possesses wealth and pleasure, he remains restless, always seeking more and refusing contentment.

Pro 30:15-16 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.…
Ecc 5:10 He who loves money is never satisfied by money…
Pro 27:20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; so the eyes of man…

he cannot escape with his treasure.

The riches he has gathered cannot preserve him when judgment comes. In Job’s world, wealth could be lost through disaster, violence, or death, and it offered no defense before God.

Ezk 7:19 They will throw their silver into the streets…
Psa 49:17 For when he dies, he will carry nothing away;…
Pro 11:4 Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,…

Nothing is left for him to consume;

The wicked man’s greed leaves nothing untouched. His appetite for gain consumes both his possessions and the welfare of others, yet it cannot preserve him from God’s judgment. The abundance he sought becomes evidence of a life spent without restraint or fear of God.

Pro 21:20 Precious treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise,…
Hab 2:5 and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an arrogant man…
Hag 1:6 You have planted much but harvested little…

thus his prosperity will not endure.

Wealth gained through oppression and wickedness cannot provide lasting security. Though he may appear secure for a time, his estate, household, and reputation will collapse under the judgment of God.

Job 15:29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure.…
Psa 37:35-36 I have seen a wicked, ruthless man flourishing…
Psa 49:16-17 Do not be afraid when a man grows rich…

In the midst of his plenty, he will be distressed;

Zophar describes the wicked man whose abundance cannot protect him when God’s judgment arrives. Though he may possess land, livestock, servants, food, and security, his prosperity will become powerless to relieve his fear. Zophar applies this principle to Job’s suffering, assuming that calamity proves hidden wickedness, though the larger book exposes the limits of that conclusion.

Luk 12:16-21 Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man…
Deu 28:47-48 Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy…
Jas 5:1-3 Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail…

the full force of misery will come upon him.

The judgment will be complete and unavoidable. Zophar insists that those who gain wealth through oppression or greed will finally receive the ruin they have brought upon others. His words affirm that God sees injustice and will judge it, even though Job’s case shows that suffering is not always direct punishment for personal sin.

Psa 73:18-20 Surely You set them on slick ground; …
Pro 1:26-27 in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer…
1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”…

When he has filled his stomach,

When the wicked man’s prosperity and indulgence seem to reach their height, his abundance gives him a false sense of security. He imagines that his wealth and power can preserve him.

Psa 17:14 from such men, O LORD, by Your hand…
Hos 13:6 When they had pasture, they became satisfied;…
Deu 32:15 But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked—becoming fat…

God will vent His fury upon him,

Yet the Lord’s judgment is certain and proportionate to the evil he has pursued.

Psa 78:49 He unleashed His fury against them, wrath, indignation…
Isa 42:25 So He poured out on them His furious anger…
Psa 21:9 You will place them in a fiery furnace…

raining it down on him as he eats.

Judgment falls while he is still enjoying the fruits of his sin, showing that human comfort cannot shield anyone from God’s justice.

Num 11:33 But while the meat was still between their teeth,…
Psa 78:30-31 Yet before they had filled their desire,…
Psa 11:6 On the wicked He will rain down fiery coals and sulfur;…

Though he flees from an iron weapon,

Zophar portrays the wicked as unable to escape judgment. Iron represented formidable military strength, yet even evasion of one threat offers no safety from God’s appointed reckoning.

Jer 46:5-6 Why am I seeing this? They are terrified, they are retreating;…
Isa 24:17-18 Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of the earth.…
Amo 5:19 It will be like a man who flees from a lion,…

a bronze-tipped arrow will pierce him.

The image shifts from flight to certain defeat. A swift, well-aimed arrow reaches the one who has escaped the sword, showing that the wicked cannot avoid the consequences of their rebellion.

Deu 32:23-24 I will heap disasters upon them; I will spend My arrows…
Lam 3:12-13 He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow.…
Psa 64:7 But God will shoot them with arrows; …

It is drawn out of his back,

The wicked man’s apparent security ends in sudden, mortal judgment. The image of a weapon removed from his body portrays suffering that cannot be escaped or concealed.

Psa 129:3 The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows…
Isa 50:6 I offered My back to those who struck Me…
Pro 26:3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey…

the gleaming point from his liver.

The wound reaches deep within, showing that God’s judgment is not superficial but brings complete ruin. What once seemed strong and prosperous is exposed as fragile before Him.

Pro 7:23 until an arrow pierces his liver…
Lam 2:11 My eyes fail from weeping; I am churning within.…
Job 16:13 His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys…

Terrors come over him.

Fear overwhelms the wicked as the consequences of his rebellion close in. Zophar describes a fate marked by dread, pain, and the certainty that no one can stand against God’s justice.

Job 18:11 Terrors frighten him on every side and…
Psa 73:19 How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away…
Deu 32:25 Outside, the sword will take their children,…

Total darkness is reserved for his treasures.

The wicked man’s wealth cannot shield him from God’s judgment. What he has stored up, including possessions gained by oppression or dishonesty, is marked for ruin in darkness, symbolizing judgment and the absence of God’s presence. His apparent security will end in complete loss.

Jud 1:13 They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame;…
2Pe 2:17 These men are springs without water and mists…
Pro 10:2 Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but righteousness…

A fire unfanned will consume him

God’s judgment does not depend on human power or natural causes. Like the fire that fell on Sodom, it comes by His decree and cannot be resisted or escaped. The judgment reaches the man himself as well as all he trusted in.

Isa 30:33 For Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready…
Psa 97:3 Fire goes before Him and consumes His foes on every side.
Psa 21:9 You will place them in a fiery furnace…

and devour what is left in his tent.

His household and remaining possessions will be swept away. The tent, once a sign of family, prosperity, and safety, will hold nothing that survives the judgment of God.

Zec 5:4 I will send it out, declares the LORD of Hosts,…
Hos 9:6 For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

The heavens will expose his iniquity,

God sees every hidden sin and will reveal the guilt of the wicked in His judgment. Nothing done in secret escapes His knowledge.

Psa 90:8 You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins…
Luk 12:2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…
Num 32:23 But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin…

and the earth will rise up against him.

The created order itself is pictured as testifying against the sinner. The wicked man cannot hide from God or escape the consequences of his rebellion.

Gen 4:10-12 “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out…
Num 16:31-33 As soon as Moses had finished saying all this,…
Isa 26:21 For behold, the LORD is coming out of His dwelling…

The possessions of his house will be removed,

The wicked man’s wealth, household, and legacy will not endure. What appears secure can be taken away under God’s judgment, leaving him without the prosperity in which he trusted.

Deu 28:30-33 You will be pledged in marriage to a woman.…
Job 15:29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure.…
Ecc 5:13-14 There is a grievous evil I have seen under the sun:…

flowing away

His riches vanish beyond recovery, like water carried off by a flood. The image emphasizes the sudden and irreversible loss of all he has accumulated.

Pro 23:5 When you glance at wealth, it disappears…
Job 27:19 He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more;…
Ecc 5:15 As a man came from his mother’s womb, so he will depart…

on the day of God’s wrath.

Zophar presents this loss as the outcome of God’s righteous judgment against persistent wickedness. The day of wrath reveals that no wealth or power can shield a person from accountability before God.

Pro 11:4 Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,…
Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able…
Rom 2:5 But because of your hard and unrepentant heart,…

This is the wicked man’s portion from God,

Zophar concludes by declaring that the ruin he has described belongs to those who defy God. He sees their loss, fear, and destruction as the righteous outcome of their rebellion.

Job 27:13 This is the wicked man’s portion from God—…
Psa 11:6 On the wicked He will rain down fiery coals and sulfur;…
Isa 17:14 In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning…

the inheritance God has appointed him.”

What is normally a blessing becomes a judgment for the wicked. Their appointed end is not security or prosperity, but the consequences God decrees against evil.

Pro 16:4 The LORD has made everything for His purpose—…
Jer 13:25 This is your lot, the portion I have measured…
