A Prophecy against Zedekiah

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD

Jeremiah delivered God’s authoritative message to Judah during its final years before exile. His ministry repeatedly warned that persistent rebellion and idolatry would bring judgment.

Zedekiah’s capture would come by God’s decree, though Nebuchadnezzar and Babylon carried it out. Judah’s political plans and military defenses would fail, confirming the warnings God had given through Jeremiah.

Zedekiah was taken to Babylon after Jerusalem’s destruction, where he remained imprisoned until his death. His exile marked the collapse of Judah’s kingdom and the end of David’s royal rule in Jerusalem for that generation.

Zedekiah, Judah’s final king, ruled from 597 to 586 BC after Nebuchadnezzar placed him on the throne. Though bound by oath to Babylon, he rebelled and brought Jerusalem under Babylonian siege. Jeremiah delivered God’s message directly to the king, showing that Zedekiah’s political position did not place him beyond the Lord’s authority.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
2Ch 36:12-13 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God…

This is what the LORD says concerning you:

The Lord addressed Zedekiah personally because his decisions had led Judah toward ruin. Jeremiah served as God’s messenger, declaring both the coming judgment on Jerusalem and the king’s own appointed outcome.

Jer 38:17-18 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God…
Jer 27:12-15 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…
Ezk 17:20-21 I will spread My net over him and catch him in My snare.…

You will not die by the sword;

Zedekiah would not fall in battle during Jerusalem’s capture. After fleeing the city, he was captured near Jericho, brought before Nebuchadnezzar, witnessed the execution of his sons, and was blinded before being taken to Babylon. He later died in captivity rather than by the sword.

Jer 39:6-7 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered…
2Ki 25:6-7 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…
Jer 52:10-11 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons…

you will die in peace.

Though Zedekiah would see Jerusalem fall and be taken captive to Babylon, he would not die by the sword. The judgment against him was severe, yet the Lord granted him a merciful end after the disasters brought on by his rebellion.

Isa 57:1-2 The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart…

As spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who preceded you,

Zedekiah would receive the customary royal honors given to Judah’s earlier kings. The burning of spices marked a respected burial and preserved his place within the Davidic royal line despite the kingdom’s collapse.

Jhn 19:39-40 Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night…
Luk 23:56 Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes.…

so people will burn spices for you and lament, ‘Alas, O master!’

Public mourning would acknowledge Zedekiah as Judah’s king. His failures did not erase the office God had entrusted to him or the sorrow attending the end of David’s earthly dynasty in Jerusalem.

Lachish and Azekah were major fortified cities southwest of Jerusalem and among Judah’s last defenses. Their resistance shows the extent of Babylon’s campaign as its army systematically subdued the land surrounding Jerusalem.

Most of Judah had already fallen, leaving Jerusalem, Lachish, and Azekah isolated. The collapse of these remaining strongholds made Judah’s defeat unavoidable and demonstrated the fulfillment of God’s judgment against the nation’s persistent idolatry and disobedience.

Freedom for Hebrew Slaves

After King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty,

Zedekiah, Judah’s last king before Jerusalem fell to Babylon, led the people in an agreement to free their Hebrew slaves. God’s law required Israelite servants to be released after a limited term of service, a command the nation had neglected. With Babylon’s army threatening Jerusalem, the leaders and people publicly pledged to obey this requirement, likely seeking the Lord’s mercy in their crisis. The release of slaves also recalled Israel’s own redemption from bondage in Egypt and reflected God’s concern for justice among His people.

Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
Deu 15:12 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Exo 21:2 If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you…

the word came to Jeremiah from the LORD

Jeremiah received God’s authoritative message concerning the covenant and the people’s response to it. As Jerusalem faced siege and destruction, the Lord addressed not only Judah’s outward actions but also the faithfulness of their obedience.

Jer 11:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 18:5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

that each man should free his Hebrew slaves,

Zedekiah and Jerusalem’s leaders had entered a covenant to obey God’s command to release Israelite servants after their appointed term of service. Israel’s own deliverance from Egypt made permanent bondage of fellow Israelites a direct denial of God’s mercy and authority.

Deu 15:12-15 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Lev 25:39-41 If a countryman among you becomes destitute…
Exo 21:2-3 If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you…

both male and female,

The covenant applied equally to men and women. No Hebrew servant was to be excluded from the protection and freedom God required.

Exo 21:7-11 And if a man sells his daughter as a servant,…
Deu 15:17 then take an awl and pierce it through his ear…
Neh 5:5 We and our children are just like our countrymen…

and no one should hold his fellow Jew in bondage.

Israelites belonged to the same covenant people and were not to treat one another as permanent property. Their later reversal of this promise exposed their injustice and rebellion against the Lord.

Deu 24:7 If a man is caught kidnapping one of his brothers…
Lev 25:42-43 Because the Israelites are My servants, whom I brought out…
Neh 5:8 “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish brothers,”…

So all the officials and all the people who entered into this covenant

During Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem, Judah’s leaders and people joined in a public covenant before God. Their united action showed that the matter involved the whole nation, not merely private decisions by slaveholders.

Exo 24:3-8 When Moses came and told the people all the words…
Jos 24:25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people…
Neh 9:38 In view of all this, we make a binding agreement…

agreed that they would free their menservants and maidservants

They pledged to obey God’s command that Hebrew servants be released after their appointed term of service. Releasing them meant accepting a real economic loss in the hope of returning to covenant faithfulness during a national crisis.

Deu 15:12-14 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Lev 25:39-41 If a countryman among you becomes destitute…

and no longer hold them in bondage.

The covenant required a permanent end to their unlawful servitude. God had redeemed Israel from slavery in Egypt, and His people were not to perpetuate bondage among their own brothers and sisters.

Lev 25:42-43 Because the Israelites are My servants, whom I brought out…
Deu 15:15 Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt…

They obeyed and released them,

At first, the officials and people carried out their pledge and freed their servants. Their later reversal exposed the insincerity of their repentance and brought God’s judgment upon Judah.

Deu 15:18 Do not regard it as a hardship to set your servant free,…
Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

but later they changed their minds

After publicly covenanting before the Lord to obey His command concerning Hebrew servants, Judah’s leaders and people reversed their decision. Their repentance proved temporary, revealing their continued resistance to God’s authority.

Exo 14:5-8 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled,…
Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…

and took back the menservants and maidservants they had freed,

The release of these servants had been required by the Law after six years of service. By reclaiming them, the people disregarded both their covenant with God and the rights of fellow Israelites whom they had acknowledged as free.

Deu 15:12-15 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Lev 25:39-43 If a countryman among you becomes destitute…
Neh 5:8 “We have done our best to buy back our Jewish brothers,”…

and they forced them to become slaves again.

Their action restored oppression after granting liberty and showed deliberate contempt for the covenant made in God’s presence. The injustice exposed the nation’s unfaithfulness and helped explain the judgment Jeremiah announced.

Neh 5:5 We and our children are just like our countrymen…
Lev 25:43-46 You are not to rule over them harshly,…
Exo 1:13-14 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly…

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

Jeremiah received God’s message during Judah’s final years under Babylonian pressure. The Lord addressed Judah’s leaders and people concerning their reversal of the covenant to release Hebrew servants after six years of service. Though they had briefly obeyed, they later forced those they had freed back into slavery. Their action violated the covenant law given through Moses and revealed the nation’s continuing disregard for God’s commands. The message announced divine judgment upon Jerusalem and Judah, which would soon fall to Babylon.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 11:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

The message comes from Yahweh, Israel’s covenant God, whose authority stands above Judah’s kings, officials, and people.

Jos 24:2 And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD…
1Ki 14:7 Go, tell Jeroboam that this is what the LORD says:…

I made a covenant with your forefathers

God bound Israel to Himself at Sinai, giving them His law and defining the obligations of life as His redeemed people.

Deu 4:31 For the LORD your God is a merciful God;…
Jer 31:32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers…
Lev 26:42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob…

when I brought them out of the land of Egypt,

Their national history began with God’s deliverance from Egyptian oppression, an act that displayed His power and faithfulness to His promises.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 6:12 be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you…
Deu 7:8 But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath…

out of the house of slavery,

Egypt had been a place of harsh bondage. Israel’s freedom came by God’s intervention and obligated them to live according to His commands.

Exo 13:3 So Moses told the people, “Remember this day,…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…

saying:

The covenant requirements that follow include the release of Hebrew servants, a command Judah had disregarded.

Exo 20:1 And God spoke all these words:
Exo 24:3 When Moses came and told the people all the words…
Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:…

Every seventh year, each of you must free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you.

God required Israelites to release fellow Hebrews who had entered service because of debt or poverty. Such service was limited and protected against permanent enslavement, preserving the dignity and covenant standing of every Israelite. The command also reminded the nation that the Lord had redeemed them from bondage in Egypt.

Deu 15:12 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Lev 25:39 If a countryman among you becomes destitute…

He may serve you six years, but then you must let him go free.

Six years of service provided a means of support and repayment, but the seventh year brought release. Freedom was not to depend on the master’s preference or the servant’s ability to purchase it. Israel’s economic practices were to reflect God’s mercy and His ownership of the people.

Exo 21:2 If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you…
Deu 15:13-14 And when you release him, do not send him away empty-handed.…
Deu 15:18 Do not regard it as a hardship to set your servant free,…

But your fathers did not listen or incline their ear.

Earlier generations had disregarded this command, continuing a pattern of covenant unfaithfulness. Their refusal to release Hebrew servants revealed both injustice toward their countrymen and rebellion against the God who had delivered Israel from slavery.

Zec 7:11-12 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…
Psa 81:11-12 But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not…
Neh 9:16-17 But they and our fathers became arrogant and stiff-necked…

Recently you repented and did what pleased Me;

Judah had briefly turned from disobedience and acted in accordance with God’s command. Their repentance was shown in a concrete change of conduct rather than words alone.

2Ki 22:19 because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself…
1Ki 11:38 If you listen to all that I command you, walk in My ways…
Deu 12:28 Be careful to obey all these things I command you,…

each of you proclaimed freedom for his neighbor.

The people released their fellow Hebrews from servitude, obeying the law that required Hebrew slaves to be freed after six years of service. This restored justice to those who had been unlawfully kept in bondage.

Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
Deu 15:12 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD…

You made a covenant before Me

Their commitment was formally made in God’s presence, binding them to carry out what He had commanded. Such a covenant acknowledged the Lord as witness and judge of their promise.

2Ki 23:3 So the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant…
Exo 24:7-8 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it…
Deu 29:12 so that you may enter into the covenant of the LORD…

in the house that bears My Name.

The covenant was made at the temple in Jerusalem, the place set apart for the worship of the Lord and the public recognition of His authority over Judah.

Jer 7:10-11 and then come and stand before Me in this house…
1Ki 8:29 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…
1Ki 8:43 Then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place…

But now you have changed your minds and profaned My name.

The people had pledged before the Lord to free their Hebrew servants, but they quickly reversed their decision. By breaking a commitment made in God’s name, they treated His covenant and commands with contempt.

Ezk 36:20-23 And wherever they went among the nations,…
Lev 22:31-32 You are to keep My commandments and practice them…
Mal 1:12-14 But you profane it when you say, ‘The table of the Lord…

Each of you has taken back the menservants and maidservants

They seized again those they had released, restoring an oppressive system from which the Lord had delivered Israel in Egypt. Their economic interests outweighed obedience and mercy toward their own countrymen.

Deu 15:12-18 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…
Exo 21:2-11 If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you…
Lev 25:39-43 If a countryman among you becomes destitute…

whom you had set at liberty to go wherever they wanted,

The servants had been granted the freedom required by God’s law, with the right to live independently and provide for their households. Their release briefly showed outward submission to the Lord’s will.

Deu 23:15-16 Do not return a slave to his master if he has…
Lev 25:10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year…
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD…

and you have again forced them to be your slaves.

By compelling free people back into bondage, Judah committed injustice against the vulnerable and openly defied God’s command. Their conduct revealed the same unfaithfulness that brought the nation under divine judgment.

Lev 25:42-43 Because the Israelites are My servants, whom I brought out…
Lev 25:46 You may leave them to your sons after you…
Neh 5:5-8 We and our children are just like our countrymen…

Therefore this is what the LORD says:

The God of Israel now delivers His judgment against Judah for breaking the covenant they had recently affirmed.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…

You have not obeyed Me;

The people had agreed to release their Hebrew servants according to God’s command, but they later forced them back into slavery.

1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…
Zec 7:11 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…

you have not proclaimed freedom, each man for his brother and for his neighbor.

Their refusal exposed both covenant rebellion and injustice toward fellow Israelites.

Israel’s spiritual leaders had sworn to uphold the covenant they administered through the temple service. Their participation revealed that the nation’s breach was both political and religious.

and all the people of the land

The oath bound not only rulers and priests but also the common people. Judah’s sin was widespread, and the responsibility for breaking the covenant was shared by the whole community.

who passed between the pieces of the calf,

The people had ratified their agreement by walking between the divided calf, a solemn act that called for death upon anyone who broke the covenant. Having freed their Hebrew servants and then enslaved them again, they had invoked judgment on themselves.

God’s judgment fell on Zedekiah and Judah after they broke their covenant to free their Hebrew servants. Though they had publicly pledged obedience, they forced the servants back into slavery. Their betrayal of God’s command brought the Babylonian army against Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar’s forces would become the instrument of judgment, capturing those who sought security while refusing to keep their word before God.

The devastation of Jerusalem would be so complete that many of the slain would remain unburied. In Israel, burial was an important mark of dignity, and exposure of the dead revealed the shame and severity of divine judgment. The fate of Judah’s leaders and people showed that covenant rebellion had brought the consequences God had warned of.

And I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials

Zedekiah, Judah’s last king, ruled under Babylonian control but rebelled despite Jeremiah’s repeated warnings. His officials shared responsibility for rejecting God’s word and leading the nation toward ruin.

into the hands of their enemies who seek their lives,

Babylon’s campaign against Judah was not merely political. Zedekiah and his leaders faced capture and death for their rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar.

to the army of the king of Babylon

Nebuchadnezzar II commanded the powerful Babylonian forces that besieged Jerusalem and eventually destroyed the city and temple in 586 BC. Their victory carried out the judgment God had announced.

that had withdrawn from you.

The Babylonian withdrawal, likely prompted by Egypt’s advance, gave Jerusalem temporary relief. It did not end the siege or remove God’s judgment; the army would return and Jerusalem would fall.

Jer 37:11 When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem…
Jer 37:5 Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans…
Jer 37:7-10 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says…

Behold, I am going to give the command, declares the LORD,

God announces that the Babylonian army will return by His sovereign decree. Though the siege had been interrupted when Egypt advanced against Babylon, the reprieve would not last. The coming judgment rested on Judah’s persistent rebellion against the LORD.

Isa 13:3 I have commanded My sanctified ones;…
Jer 25:9 behold, I will summon all the families of the north,…
Isa 5:26 He lifts a banner for the distant nations…

and I will bring them back to this city.

The Babylonian forces would again surround Jerusalem, showing that neither political alliances nor military developments could overturn God’s judgment. Zedekiah’s efforts to resist Babylon would fail.

Jer 37:8 Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city.…
2Ki 25:1-2 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Jer 32:28-29 Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold…

They will fight against it, capture it, and burn it down.

Jerusalem would endure siege, defeat, and destruction. Babylon captured the city in 586 BC and burned it, including the temple and royal buildings, bringing the kingdom of Judah to its end.

Jer 52:7 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…
2Ki 25:4 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…
2Ch 36:17-19 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…

And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”

The devastation would extend beyond Jerusalem throughout Judah. Many towns were destroyed, and much of the population was killed, displaced, or carried into exile, leaving the land largely abandoned.

Jer 26:9 How dare you prophesy in the name of the LORD…
Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…
