Moab’s Destruction

Send the tribute lambs to the ruler of the land,

Moab was urged to resume the tribute once paid to Judah, acknowledging Jerusalem’s authority and seeking favor in the midst of impending judgment.

2Ki 3:4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder…
2Sa 8:2 David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down…
Psa 72:10-11 May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute;…

from Sela in the desert

The tribute would come from Moab’s southern strongholds at Sela, meaning “rock” in Hebrew, through the harsh wilderness, showing the urgency of Moab’s appeal.

2Ki 14:7 Amaziah struck down 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.…
2Ch 25:11-12 Amaziah, however, summoned his strength and led his troops…
Oba 1:3-4 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…

to the mount of Daughter Zion.

Jerusalem, set on Mount Zion, was the seat of David’s throne and the place from which Judah’s king ruled. Moab’s submission pointed to its need for protection from the advancing enemy.

Psa 48:2 Beautiful in loftiness, the joy of all the earth,…
Mic 4:8 And you, O watchtower of the flock, O stronghold,…
Isa 2:2-3 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…

Like fluttering birds pushed out of the nest,

Moab’s people are pictured as frightened and exposed, driven from the safety of their homes by invasion and disaster.

Deu 32:11 As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,…
Pro 27:8 Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man…

so are the daughters of Moab

The women of Moab represent the nation’s vulnerable inhabitants and its scattered population, facing the loss of protection, land, and security.

Jer 48:9 Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid waste…
Jer 48:6 Flee! Run for your lives! Become like a juniper…

at the fords of the Arnon:

The refugees gather at the crossing places of the Arnon River, Moab’s northern boundary, seeking escape as judgment reaches their land.

Deu 2:24 Arise, set out, and cross the Arnon Valley.…
Num 21:13 From there they moved on and camped on the other side…
Jer 48:20 Moab is put to shame, for it has been shattered.…

“Give us counsel; render a decision.

Moab appeals to Judah for wise and just action as its people flee the devastation of invasion. The request recognizes Judah’s authority and seeks protection under a righteous ruler.

Isa 11:2-4 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom…
Psa 72:1-2 Endow the king with Your justice, O God,…
Pro 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel.…

Shelter us at noonday with shade as dark as night.

The fierce midday sun pictures the immediate danger facing Moab’s fugitives. They ask for concealment so complete that their enemies cannot find them.

Psa 121:5-6 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade…
Isa 4:6 a shelter to give shade from the heat by day…
Isa 25:4 For You have been a refuge for the poor…

Hide the refugees; do not betray the one who flees.

Judah is urged to receive Moab’s displaced people and not hand them over to their pursuers. The appeal calls for mercy toward those driven from their homes by war.

Oba 1:14 Nor should you stand at the crossroads to cut off…
Deu 23:15-16 Do not return a slave to his master if he has…
Pro 24:11-12 Rescue those being led away to death, and restrain…

Let my fugitives stay with you;

Moab appeals to Judah to receive those fleeing the devastation of their land. Though the two peoples had a troubled history, Moab’s descent from Lot gave them a distant family connection to Israel. The request calls for shelter rather than betrayal of the displaced.

Deu 23:15-16 Do not return a slave to his master if he has…
Jos 20:4-6 When someone flees to one of these cities,…

be a refuge for Moab from the destroyer.”

The destroyer is the invading power carrying out judgment against Moab. Situated east of the Dead Sea, Moab was exposed to the movements of larger armies and could not withstand a major invasion alone.

Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…
Exo 12:23 When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians,…

When the oppressor has gone,

Judah’s protection would be needed only until the invading force had passed. The oppression described is real military violence, not merely a general symbol of evil.

Isa 14:4 you will sing this song of contempt against the king…
Zec 9:8 But I will camp around My house because of an army,…

destruction has ceased,

The land would eventually be relieved of the devastation brought by war. Yet Isaiah’s larger oracle makes clear that Moab’s suffering came under God’s judgment for its pride.

Isa 60:18 No longer will violence be heard in your land,…
Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…

and the oppressors have vanished from the land,

The removal of the invaders anticipates the end of their power over the region. Peace would follow the defeat of those who crushed and despoiled weaker nations.

Pro 2:21-22 For the upright will inhabit the land, and the blameless…
Psa 37:10-11 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…

in loving devotion

God’s covenant mercy provides the foundation for His dealings with His people and for the kingdom He promises to uphold.

Psa 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne…
Psa 136:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good.…
Mic 7:18-20 Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity…

a throne will be established

The hope of a secure and lasting rule stands against the instability of Judah’s day and points to God’s preservation of David’s royal line.

2Sa 7:13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will…
Psa 89:4 “I will establish your offspring forever…”…
Psa 45:6-7 Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever,…

in the tent of David.

The Davidic house, though humbled, would not be abandoned. God’s promise would find its ultimate fulfillment in the Messiah, Jesus Christ, David’s rightful descendant.

Amo 9:11-12 “In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David.”…
Act 15:16-17 After this I will return and rebuild the fallen tent…
Luk 1:32-33 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High…

A judge seeking justice

The promised King would rule with righteous judgment, defending what is right and governing according to God’s standard.

Psa 72:1-4 Endow the king with Your justice, O God,…
Isa 11:3-5 And He will delight in the fear of the LORD.…
Jer 23:5-6 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…

and hastening righteousness

His reign would not tolerate injustice or delay in setting matters right, bringing moral order and peace.

Isa 46:13 I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away…
Isa 51:5-6 My righteousness draws near, My salvation is on the way…
Isa 62:1-2 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent…

will sit on it in faithfulness.

The King’s rule would be marked by complete loyalty to God and unwavering reliability toward His people.

Psa 96:13 before the LORD, for He is coming—…
Psa 89:33-37 But I will not withdraw My loving devotion from him…
Rev 19:11 Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me…

We have heard of Moab’s pomposity,

Moab lay east of the Dead Sea and frequently opposed Israel despite their shared ancestry through Lot. Its wealth, fortified cities, and strategic position fostered a reputation for national pride recognized throughout the region.

Jer 48:29 We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, his pride…
Jer 48:42 Moab will be destroyed as a nation because he vaunted…

his exceeding pride and conceit,

Moab’s arrogance shaped its conduct toward neighboring peoples and its confidence in its own strength. Such pride placed the nation under God’s judgment.

Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…
Pro 18:12 Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud,…
Oba 1:3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…

his overflowing arrogance.

Their disdain was not hidden but displayed in their words, policies, and hostility toward Judah and Israel.

Psa 94:4 They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast.
Isa 10:12 So when the Lord has completed all His work…
1Sa 2:3 Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come…

But his boasting is empty.

Moab’s confidence would prove groundless when judgment came, leaving its claims of strength and security without substance.

Jer 48:30 “I know his insolence,” declares the LORD, “but it is futile.…
Jas 4:16 As it is, you boast in your proud intentions.…
Jer 9:23-24 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man…

Therefore let Moab wail;

Moab faces the judgment announced against its proud and idolatrous nation. Descended from Lot, the Moabites long stood as neighbors and frequent enemies of Israel, yet their strength and wealth could not shield them from God’s decree.

Jer 48:31 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…
Jer 48:20 Moab is put to shame, for it has been shattered.…
Isa 15:2 Dibon goes up to its temple to weep at its high places.…

let them wail together for Moab.

The grief will be national, reaching every part of the land as its cities, defenses, and prosperity collapse.

Jer 48:32 I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah,…
Isa 15:3 In its streets they wear sackcloth; on the rooftops…
Jer 48:17 Mourn for him, all you who surround him…

Moan for the raisin cakes of Kir-hareseth,

Kir-hareseth was an important Moabite stronghold, and its raisin cakes represented the abundance and celebrations that judgment would bring to an end.

2Ki 3:25 Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place,…
Hos 3:1 Then the LORD said to me, “Go show love to your wife again,…
Sng 2:5 Sustain me with raisins; refresh me with apples…

you who are utterly stricken.

Moab’s people will be crushed by the loss of their security, wealth, and joy, with no human power able to reverse the devastation.

Jer 30:12 For this is what the LORD says: “Your injury is incurable;…
Jer 30:15 Why do you cry out over your wound? Your pain has no cure!…
Isa 1:5-6 Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep rebelling…

For the fields of Heshbon have withered,

Heshbon, once a prosperous Moabite city surrounded by productive farmland, would be reduced to barrenness under God’s judgment. Its failed harvests portray the ruin of a land known for abundance.

Jol 1:10 The field is ruined; the land mourns…
Isa 15:4 Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices…

along with the grapevines of Sibmah.

Sibmah’s vineyards were a major source of Moab’s wealth and reputation. Their destruction meant the loss of both economic security and national pride.

Jer 48:32 I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah,…
Jer 48:33 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…

The rulers of the nations have trampled its choicest vines,

Invading powers would devastate Moab’s finest vineyards, leaving no part of its former prosperity untouched. The judgment would come through foreign rulers who overran the land.

Psa 80:13 The boar from the forest ravages it, …
Isa 5:5 Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My vineyard:…

which had reached as far as Jazer and spread toward the desert.

Moab’s vineyards had extended northward to Jazer and eastward toward the wilderness, showing the wide reach of its cultivation before the invasion.

Jos 13:25 The territory of Jazer, all the cities of Gilead…
Num 21:32 After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, Israel captured…

Their shoots had spread out and passed over the sea.

The vines had flourished across the region, likely toward the Dead Sea, but their extensive growth could not preserve Moab from the coming desolation.

Psa 80:11 It sent out its branches to the Sea, and its shoots…
Gen 49:22 Joseph is a fruitful vine—a fruitful vine by a spring,…

So I weep with Jazer for the vines of Sibmah;

Isaiah joins the mourning over Moab’s ruined vineyards. Jazer and Sibmah, east of the Jordan, were known for fertile fields and productive vines. Their destruction meant the loss of wealth, harvest, and the celebrations that accompanied God’s provision.

Jer 48:32 I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah,…
Jos 13:19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,

I drench Heshbon and Elealeh with my tears.

Heshbon and Elealeh were important Moabite cities whose land and vineyards would be devastated by the invading army. The prophet’s tears reveal that divine judgment is not described with indifference; Moab’s ruin brought real desolation to its cities and people.

Isa 15:4 Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices…
Jer 48:34 There is a cry from Heshbon to Elealeh; …

Triumphant shouts have fallen silent over your summer fruit and your harvest.

The joyful cries of workers gathering grapes and summer fruit would cease because the fields had been destroyed. What had been a season of abundance and festivity became a time of silence and grief, showing the complete reversal of Moab’s prosperity under God’s judgment.

Jer 48:33 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…
Jol 1:11-12 Be dismayed, O farmers, wail, O vinedressers…

Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard;

Moab’s fertile fields, once marked by harvest celebrations, would be stripped of their abundance. God’s judgment would turn a place of fruitfulness into a scene of loss.

Jer 7:34 I will remove from the cities of Judah and the streets…
Jer 16:9 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Hos 2:11 I will put an end to all her exultation: her feasts,…

no one sings or shouts in the vineyards.

The customary songs and cries of workers gathering grapes would cease. The silence in the vineyards portrays the collapse of ordinary life, prosperity, and communal celebration.

Jer 48:33 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…
Isa 24:7-9 The new wine dries up, the vine withers.…
Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;…

No one tramples the grapes in the winepresses;

With the vineyards ruined and the harvest ended, wine production would stop. What had supported Moab’s economy and supplied its feasts would no longer remain.

Jol 3:13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.…
Rev 14:19-20 So the angel swung his sickle over the earth…
Lam 1:15 The Lord has rejected all the mighty men in my midst;…

I have put an end to the cheering.

The Lord claims responsibility for ending Moab’s harvest joy. The disaster was not merely the result of war or failed crops, but the appointed judgment of God against the nation.

Jer 25:10 Moreover, I will banish from them the sounds of joy…
Amo 5:23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs!…
Isa 24:11 In the streets they cry out for wine. All joy turns to gloom…

Therefore my heart laments for Moab like a harp,

Isaiah grieves over the devastation appointed for Moab, a nation descended from Lot and long troubled by pride, idolatry, and conflict with Israel. The coming judgment is deserved, yet it is not viewed with coldness or delight.

Jer 48:36 Therefore My heart laments like a flute for Moab;…
Jer 48:31 Therefore I will wail for Moab; I will cry out…
Isa 15:5 My heart cries out over Moab; her fugitives flee…

my inmost being for Kir-heres.

Kir-heres was one of Moab’s chief fortified cities and a center of its strength. Its ruin would mark the collapse of Moab’s security and national pride, bringing sorrow even as God’s judgment is carried out.

2Ki 3:25 Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place,…
2Ki 3:27 So he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him,…
Isa 15:1 This is the burden against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined…

When Moab appears on the high place,

Moab turns to its elevated shrines, where it worships Chemosh and other false gods. The nation’s religious devotion cannot avert the judgment announced against it.

Jer 48:35 In Moab, declares the LORD, I will bring an end…
Jer 48:13 Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as…
2Ki 17:11 They burned incense on all the high places…

when he wearies himself

Moab exhausts itself through repeated rituals and desperate appeals, seeking help from idols that have no power to save.

Hab 2:13 Is it not indeed from the LORD of Hosts…
Isa 57:10 You are wearied by your many journeys, but you did not say…
Isa 47:13 You are wearied by your many counselors;…

and enters his sanctuary to pray,

Moab enters the sanctuary, a sacred place dedicated to its gods, likely a temple of Chemosh, with formal petitions for deliverance. Its worship continues, but its sanctuary offers no refuge.

Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Isa 44:17-20 From the rest he makes a god, his graven image.…
Jdg 10:14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.…

it will do him no good.

Chemosh cannot answer, protect, or restore Moab. The nation’s reliance on idols ends in failure because its gods are powerless.

Jer 11:12 Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem…
Jer 2:28 But where are the gods you made for yourselves?…
Isa 46:7 They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along;…

This is the message

A prophetic announcement introduces God’s judgment on Moab.

Mal 1:1 This is the burden of the word of the LORD to Israel…
Nam 1:1 This is the burden against Nineveh, the book…
Hab 1:1 This is the burden that Habakkuk the prophet received…

that the LORD spoke

Its authority rests in the Lord, not in human prediction.

Jer 36:2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken…
2Ki 17:13 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD…

earlier

The warning had already been given and would be fulfilled at the appointed time.

Isa 48:3 I foretold the former things long ago;…
Jer 28:8 The prophets of old who preceded you and me prophesied…

concerning Moab.

Moab, east of the Dead Sea and descended from Lot, had repeatedly opposed Israel and was marked by pride and idolatry.

Jer 48:1 Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Isa 15:1 This is the burden against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined…
Zep 2:8-9 I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults…

And now the LORD says,

God adds a final, definite word concerning Moab’s coming downfall. The judgment rests on His authority and will not be altered by Moab’s wealth, defenses, or reputation.

Jer 48:1 Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Ezk 25:8 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Moab and Seir…
2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…

“In three years,

The announced period gave Moab a fixed span before the predicted disaster would occur.

2Ki 17:5 Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land,…
2Ki 18:10 And at the end of three years, the Assyrians captured it.…

as a hired worker counts the years,

The timing would be exact, like the carefully measured term of a laborer’s contract. Nothing would shorten or extend the appointed time.

Isa 21:16 For this is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year,…
Job 7:1 Is not man consigned to labor on earth?…
Job 14:6 look away from him and let him rest, so he can enjoy his day…

Moab’s splendor will become an object of contempt,

Moab’s former prosperity, pride, and public standing would be replaced by disgrace. The nation that had exalted itself would be humbled before surrounding peoples.

Jer 48:26 “Make him drunk, because he has magnified himself”…
Jer 48:29 We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, his pride…
Zep 2:10 they shall have in return for their pride,…

with all her many people.

The devastation would reach the nation broadly, reducing the strength that came from its population and resources.

Num 22:3-4 and Moab was terrified of the people…
Jer 48:42 Moab will be destroyed as a nation because he vaunted…
Isa 10:19 The remaining trees of its forests will be so few…

And those who are left will be few and feeble.”

Only a small, weakened remnant would survive, leaving Moab unable to recover its former power.

Deu 28:62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky…
Amo 5:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: “The city that marches out…
Ezk 21:7 And when they ask, ‘Why are you groaning?’…
