1In those days [the] crowd once again became very large, and they had nothing to eat. [Jesus] called the disciples {to Him} [and] said, 1Ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις πάλιν πολλοῦ ὄχλου ὄντος καὶ μὴ ἐχόντων τί φάγωσιν προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς λέγει αὐτοῖς
2“I have compassion for [these] people, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 2Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν
3If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way. For some of them have come a great distance.” 3καὶ ἐὰν ἀπολύσω αὐτοὺς νήστεις εἰς οἶκον αὐτῶν ἐκλυθήσονται ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καί τινες αὐτῶν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἥκασιν*
4His disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could anyone [find enough] bread to feed all these [people]?” 4Καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι Πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπ’ ἐρημίας
5“How many loaves do you have?” [Jesus] asked. “Seven,” they replied. 5Καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτούς Πόσους ἔχετε ἄρτους Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἑπτά
6And He directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves, gave thanks [and] broke [them], and gave [them] to His disciples to set before [the people]. And they distributed [them] to the crowd. 6Καὶ παραγγέλλει τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα παρατιθῶσιν καὶ παρέθηκαν τῷ ὄχλῳ
7They also had a few small fish, and [Jesus] blessed them [and] ordered that these be set before [them] as well. 7καὶ εἶχον* ἰχθύδια ὀλίγα καὶ εὐλογήσας αὐτὰ εἶπεν καὶ ταῦτα παρατιθέναι
8[The people] ate and were satisfied, and [the disciples] picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 8Καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ ἦραν περισσεύματα κλασμάτων ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας
9And about four thousand were [ fed ]. As soon as [Jesus] had dismissed [the crowd], 9ἦσαν δὲ ὡς τετρακισχίλιοι καὶ ἀπέλυσεν αὐτούς
10He got into the boat with His disciples [and] went to the district of Dalmanutha. 10Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐμβὰς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Δαλμανουθά
11Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with [Jesus]. They tested Him [by] demanding from Him a sign from heaven. 11Καὶ ἐξῆλθον οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ ἤρξαντο συζητεῖν αὐτῷ ζητοῦντες παρ’ αὐτοῦ σημεῖον ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πειράζοντες αὐτόν
12[Jesus] sighed deeply in His spirit [and] said, “Why {does] this generation demand a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 12Καὶ ἀναστενάξας τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ λέγει Τί ἡ γενεὰ αὕτη ζητεῖ σημεῖον ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν εἰ δοθήσεται τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ σημεῖον
13Then He left them, got back into the boat, [and] crossed to the other side. 13καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς πάλιν ἐμβὰς ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πέραν
14Now [the disciples] had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 14Καὶ ἐπελάθοντο λαβεῖν ἄρτους καὶ εἰ μὴ ἕνα ἄρτον οὐκ εἶχον μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ
15“Watch out!” He cautioned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.” 15καὶ διεστέλλετο αὐτοῖς λέγων Ὁρᾶτε βλέπετε ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ τῆς ζύμης Ἡρῴδου
16[So] they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. 16καὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ἀλλήλους ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχουσιν
17Aware of [their conversation], [Jesus] asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts? 17Καὶ γνοὺς λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν
18‘Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember? 18Ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε
19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Twelve,” they answered. 19ὅτε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους ἔκλασα εἰς τοὺς πεντακισχιλίους πόσους κοφίνους κλασμάτων πλήρεις ἤρατε Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Δώδεκα
20“And when [I broke] the seven [loaves] for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Seven,” they said. 20Ὅτε ‹καὶ› τοὺς ἑπτὰ εἰς τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους πόσων σπυρίδων πληρώματα κλασμάτων ἤρατε Καὶ λέγουσιν ‹αὐτῷ› Ἑπτά
21Then He asked them, “Do you still not understand?” 21Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Οὔπω συνίετε
22[When] they arrived at Bethsaida, [some people] brought a blind [man] and begged [Jesus] to touch him. 22Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς Βηθσαϊδάν Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ τυφλὸν καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα αὐτοῦ ἅψηται
23So He took the blind [man] by the hand [and] led him out of the village. Then He spit on [the man’s] eyes [and] placed [His] hands on him. “Can you see anything?” He asked. 23καὶ ἐπιλαβόμενος τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ τυφλοῦ ἐξήνεγκεν αὐτὸν ἔξω τῆς κώμης καὶ πτύσας εἰς τὰ ὄμματα αὐτοῦ ἐπιθεὶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῷ ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν Εἴ τι βλέπεις
24[The man] looked up [and] said, “I can see the people, [but] they look like trees walking around.” 24Καὶ ἀναβλέψας ἔλεγεν Βλέπω τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ὅτι ὡς δένδρα ὁρῶ περιπατοῦντας
25Once again [Jesus] placed [His] hands on [the man’s] eyes, and when he opened them [his sight] was restored, and he could see everything clearly. 25Εἶτα πάλιν ἐπέθηκεν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ διέβλεψεν καὶ ἀπεκατέστη καὶ ἐνέβλεπεν τηλαυγῶς ἅπαντα
26[Jesus] sent him home [and] said, “Do not go back into the village.” 26καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκον αὐτοῦ λέγων Μηδὲ εἰς τὴν κώμην εἰσέλθῃς ⧼μηδὲ εἴπῃς τινὶ ἐν τῇ κώμῃ⧽
27Then Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way, He questioned His disciples: “Who {do} people say I am?” 27Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς κώμας Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐπηρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων αὐτοῖς Τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι
28They answered, “[Some say] John the Baptist; others [say] Elijah; and still others [say You are] one of the prophets.” 28Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες ὅτι Ἰωάννην τὸν Βαπτιστήν καὶ ἄλλοι Ἠλίαν ἄλλοι δὲ ὅτι εἷς τῶν προφητῶν
29“But who {do} you say I am?” He asked. Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” 29Καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπηρώτα αὐτούς Ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι Ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Πέτρος λέγει αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός
30And [Jesus] warned them not to tell anyone about Him. 30Καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ λέγωσιν περὶ αὐτοῦ
31Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and [that] He must be killed and after three days rise [again]. 31Καὶ ἤρξατο διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς ὅτι δεῖ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πολλὰ παθεῖν καὶ ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι ὑπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ ἀποκτανθῆναι καὶ μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἀναστῆναι
32He spoke [this] message quite frankly, and Peter took Him aside [and] began to rebuke Him. 32καὶ παρρησίᾳ τὸν λόγον ἐλάλει καὶ προσλαβόμενος ὁ Πέτρος αὐτὸν ἤρξατο ἐπιτιμᾶν αὐτῷ
33Turning and looking at His disciples, [Jesus] rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” 33Ὁ δὲ ἐπιστραφεὶς καὶ ἰδὼν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἐπετίμησεν Πέτρῳ καὶ λέγει Ὕπαγε ὀπίσω μου Σατανᾶ ὅτι οὐ φρονεῖς τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλὰ τὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων
34Then [Jesus] called the crowd {to Him} along with His disciples, [and] He told them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 34Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Εἴ τις θέλει ὀπίσω μου ἐλθεῖν ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθείτω μοι
35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and for the gospel will save it. 35ὃς γὰρ ἐὰν θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι ἀπολέσει αὐτήν ὃς δ’ ἂν ἀπολέσει τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ καὶ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου σώσει αὐτήν
36What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 36Τί γὰρ ὠφελεῖ ἄνθρωπον κερδῆσαι τὸν κόσμον ὅλον καὶ ζημιωθῆναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ
37Or what {can} a man give in exchange for his soul? 37τί γὰρ δοῖ ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ
38For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.” 38ὃς γὰρ ἐὰν ἐπαισχυνθῇ με καὶ τοὺς ἐμοὺς λόγους ἐν τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ τῇ μοιχαλίδι καὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπαισχυνθήσεται αὐτὸν ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ Πατρὸς αὐτοῦ μετὰ τῶν ἀγγέλων τῶν ἁγίων
