Berean Study Bible The Beginning of KnowledgeProverbs are concise, pithy sayings that express general truths or practical precepts about wise and righteous living. As part of Israel’s Wisdom Literature, they apply the fear of the Lord to ordinary decisions, relationships, work, speech, family life, and leadership. Pro 25:1 These are additional proverbs of Solomon,… of Solomon Solomon received extraordinary wisdom from God and became known throughout the ancient world for his discernment. The sayings associated with him reflect the responsibilities of governing, the realities of human behavior, and the blessings of living under God’s order. 1Ki 4:32-34 Solomon composed three thousand proverbs,… son of David, Solomon stood in the royal line established through David, to whom God promised an enduring dynasty. His position connected Israel’s wisdom tradition with God’s covenant purposes for the house of David. 1Ki 2:12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,… king of Israel, Solomon ruled over the united kingdom during a period of peace, prosperity, and extensive building, including the temple in Jerusalem. His royal authority gave weight to these instructions, which were preserved to guide God’s people in faithful and prudent living. 1Ki 4:1 So King Solomon ruled over Israel, for gaining wisdom and discipline, Proverbs begins by presenting wisdom as practical, godly understanding for daily life. Discipline includes the correction, instruction, and self-control needed to reject folly and live uprightly. Israel’s wise teachers regarded such training as essential for forming character and preserving order within the family and community. Pro 4:5-7 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget… for comprehending words of insight, Wisdom also enables a person to grasp the meaning of instruction, counsel, and moral teaching. Insight reaches beyond hearing words to recognizing their truth and applying them rightly in difficult circumstances. Proverbs prepares its readers to discern the difference between righteous guidance and deceptive speech. Pro 2:1-6 My son, if you accept my words and hide my commandments… and for receiving instruction in wise living Wisdom equips people to apply God’s truth to the decisions, relationships, duties, and dangers of daily life. It forms sound judgment rather than mere knowledge. Pro 4:13 Hold on to instruction; do not let go. Guard it… and in righteousness, Righteousness directs conduct according to God’s moral standard, calling for integrity, faithfulness, and obedience in both public and private life. 2Ti 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction,… justice, Justice requires what is right to be upheld and wrongs to be addressed, especially where the weak, poor, or vulnerable are mistreated. Deu 16:20 Pursue justice, and justice alone, so that you may live… and equity. Equity calls for impartial judgment and honest dealing. Solomon’s reputation for wise judgment illustrates the kind of fairness Proverbs commends. Psa 98:9 before the LORD, for He comes to judge the earth.… To impart prudence to the simple Proverbs offers practical wisdom to the inexperienced and easily influenced, teaching them to recognize danger, resist foolish choices, and live with self-control. God’s instruction gives moral direction to those who lack judgment and need guidance for daily life. Pro 8:5 O simple ones, learn to be shrewd; O fools,… and knowledge and discretion to the young, Young people especially need truth and sound judgment as they form habits, make decisions, and prepare for adult responsibilities. The instruction of Proverbs equips them to distinguish right from wrong, consider consequences, and act wisely before patterns of sin and folly become established. 2Ti 3:15 From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures,… let the wise listen Wisdom begins with a teachable heart. Those who truly understand their need for God’s guidance remain willing to hear His word and learn from others. Pro 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,… and gain instruction, God uses teaching, correction, and discipline to form His people. Receiving instruction requires humility and a readiness to turn from error. Pro 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline… and the discerning acquire wise counsel Discernment seeks guidance that agrees with God’s truth. In Israel, kings and leaders depended on trusted counselors; likewise, wise judgment grows through godly counsel rather than self-reliance. Pro 11:14 For lack of guidance, a nation falls,… by understanding the proverbs and parables, Wisdom is gained not merely by hearing concise sayings or stories but by discerning the truth they reveal. Proverbs give practical instruction for righteous living, while parables use familiar situations to expose moral and spiritual realities. Ezk 17:2 Son of man, pose a riddle; speak a parable… the sayings and riddles of the wise. The words of the wise often require careful thought because they address the deeper patterns of human conduct, justice, and the fear of the Lord. Solomon’s instruction calls readers to pursue the discernment needed to grasp wisdom’s meaning and apply it rightly. Pro 22:17-21 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise—… The fear of the LORD Reverent submission to God stands at the center of true wisdom. It recognizes His holiness, authority, and sovereign right to rule over human life. Such fear is not mere dread but a settled recognition of who God is and a willingness to obey Him. Psa 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom… is the beginning of knowledge, All sound understanding begins with acknowledging God as Creator and Judge. Knowledge in Proverbs includes moral discernment and practical skill for living according to God’s order. Apart from Him, human learning lacks its proper foundation. Pro 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom… but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Fools reject God’s instruction and resent correction because they prefer their own judgment. Their refusal is moral as well as intellectual, leading them away from the path of righteousness and into the consequences of rebellion. Pro 23:9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will despise the wisdom…
The Enticement of SinWisdom is ordinarily learned within the family, where a father bears responsibility to guide his children in the fear of the Lord and in righteous conduct. Solomon addresses his son personally, reflecting the close and enduring duty of parents to prepare their children for life under God’s authority. Pro 4:1-4 Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;… and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. A mother also provides essential instruction, shaping her children’s character through faithful counsel and daily care. Her teaching can be understood as Torah, meaning law or instruction. Both parents are to be honored as God-appointed authorities in the home, and their godly instruction protects a child from the destructive paths warned against throughout Proverbs. Pro 6:20-23 My son, keep your father’s commandment,… For they are a garland of grace on your head Parental instruction, grounded in the fear of the Lord, brings honor rather than shame. Like the wreaths awarded to victorious athletes and honored citizens, wisdom marks a person with dignity and favor. Received instruction shapes the mind, directing judgment and conduct toward what is right. Pro 4:9 She will set a garland of grace on your head;… and a pendant around your neck. Wisdom also becomes visible in a person’s character and actions. As an ornament identifies and adorns its wearer, faithful obedience displays the value of godly teaching in daily life. Keeping such instruction close preserves it as a continual guide. Pro 3:22 They will be life to your soul and adornment to your neck. My son, Wisdom is presented within the close bond of a father instructing his child. In Israel, parents bore primary responsibility for forming character, teaching the fear of the Lord, and preparing children to live faithfully among a people bound to God’s covenant. Heb 12:5 And you have forgotten the exhortation… if sinners entice you, Those who reject God’s commands often seek companions for their wrongdoing. Their invitations may promise gain, acceptance, or excitement, but they draw others into rebellion and its consequences. Pro 4:14-15 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked… do not yield to them. The son must refuse such pressure and remain committed to the path of wisdom. Faithfulness requires a deliberate rejection of evil, even when it is urged by peers or appears advantageous. Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,… If they say, “Come along, Sin often begins with an invitation to join others in conduct that violates God’s commands. The appeal relies on companionship and shared purpose, drawing the hearer away from wisdom and restraint. Gen 37:20 “Come now, let us kill him and throw him”… let us lie in wait for blood, Their plan is deliberate, not impulsive. They intend violence for personal gain, treating human life as something to be taken without fear of God or concern for justice. Pro 12:6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood… let us ambush the innocent without cause, The intended victims have given no offense and deserve protection, yet the wicked target them because they are vulnerable. Such plotting reveals a heart set against righteousness and the order God established. Pro 24:15 Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, near the dwelling… let us swallow them alive like Sheol, The wicked speak of sudden, ruthless destruction, intending to remove their victims as completely as the grave receives the dead. Their words recall Korah’s rebellion, when the earth opened and swallowed the rebels alive under God’s judgment. Such violence reveals hearts set against wisdom, justice, and the value of human life. Num 16:32-33 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them… and whole like those descending into the Pit. They desire total ruin, leaving nothing behind. The Pit represents the realm of death and the finality of judgment, exposing the true end of those who choose greed and bloodshed. Their plan promises gain, but it leads toward destruction rather than life. Psa 30:3 O LORD, You pulled me up from Sheol; You spared… We will find all manner of precious goods; Sinners entice others with the promise of easy wealth, presenting robbery as a path to abundance. Their offer appeals to greed and the desire for possessions without honest labor. Isa 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness… we will fill our houses with plunder. The wealth they seek comes from violence and theft, filling their houses with plunder and leaving victims stripped of what belongs to them. Such gain may appear secure for a time, but it carries guilt, judgment, and ruin rather than lasting prosperity. Mic 2:2 They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses.… Throw in your lot with us; Sinners urge the innocent to join their violent plans and share their fate. Their appeal offers belonging and security, but it requires participation in bloodshed and unjust gain. The invitation demands a choice between the fear of the Lord and companionship with the wicked. Psa 26:4-5 I do not sit with deceitful men, nor keep company… let us all share one purse”— The group promises equal access to the plunder taken from their victims. Their common purse implies communal sharing of resources, but it is built on theft and murder, not honest labor or generosity. Shared profit does not lessen the guilt of those who unite in evil. Hab 2:6-8 Will not all of these take up a taunt against him… my son, Solomon addresses his listener with the care and authority of a father instructing a child. Wisdom was to be taught within the household, shaping conduct before harmful influences took hold. Pro 3:1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart… do not walk the road with them Those who plot violence and pursue dishonest gain follow a course opposed to God’s ways. Joining them makes a person a participant in their sin and exposes him to its consequences. Pro 4:14-15 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked… or set foot upon their path. The warning reaches even the first step toward their way of life. Wisdom requires refusing the company, counsel, and practices of the wicked before their path becomes one’s own. Pro 2:12-15 to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man… For their feet run to evil, The wicked do not drift into sin by accident; they pursue it willingly and make it their chosen path. Their actions reveal hearts set against God’s wisdom and righteousness. Isa 59:7 Their feet run to evil; they are swift to shed innocent blood… and they are swift to shed blood. Their rejection of restraint leads quickly to violence, injustice, and the destruction of life. Human life bears God’s image, so the readiness to harm others exposes the depth of their rebellion and the danger of joining their way. Rom 3:15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; How futile it is to spread the net A net laid openly before a bird will not catch it. The image exposes the blindness of those who plan violence and gain through wrongdoing: they ignore the danger of their own course even when its outcome is plain. Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net… where any bird can see it! Even a bird avoids a visible trap, but the sinners described in the surrounding passage rush toward destruction. Their scheme turns back upon them, for they set an ambush that ultimately brings ruin on themselves. Psa 124:7 We have escaped like a bird from the snare… But they lie in wait for their own blood; Those who plan violence against the innocent ultimately endanger themselves. Their schemes resemble Haman’s plot against the Jews, which ended in his own destruction. Evil often turns back upon those who devise it, exposing the ruin built into sinful conduct. Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;… they ambush their own lives. The wicked set a trap, yet become its victims. Their pursuit of gain through bloodshed brings judgment, loss, and death rather than the security or prosperity they sought. Psa 9:15-16 The nations have fallen into a pit of their making;… Such is the fate of all who are greedy, Greed turns the heart from God’s ways and places personal gain above righteousness, mercy, and the well-being of others. Israel’s laws guarded against exploitation because unchecked covetousness harms both individuals and the community. Pro 15:27 He who is greedy for unjust gain brings trouble… whose unjust gain Unjust gain, wealth obtained by fraud, oppression, theft, or abuse of power, violates God’s command for honesty and justice. Material prosperity cannot excuse the wrong by which it is acquired. Hab 2:9 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,… takes the lives of its possessors. Greed ultimately destroys those who yield to it. The very gain pursued for security becomes a snare, bringing ruin, judgment, and death rather than the life and peace promised to those who walk uprightly. Luk 12:20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night…
Wisdom Calls AloudWisdom is portrayed as a woman speaking openly in the city’s public thoroughfares, where travelers, merchants, elders, and families gathered. Her message is not concealed from ordinary people but offered plainly to all who will hear. Pro 8:1-3 Does not wisdom call out, and understanding raise her voice?… she lifts her voice in the square; The city square was a central place for trade, legal matters, and public discussion. Wisdom addresses people amid the daily concerns of life, showing that godly understanding guides practical decisions as well as matters of faith. Pro 9:3 She has sent out her maidservants; she calls out… in the main concourse she cries aloud, Wisdom is portrayed as speaking in the busiest public places, where merchants, travelers, laborers, and families gathered. Her message is open and accessible, not confined to rulers or scholars. The public cry conveys urgency, calling people to hear and respond before the consequences of folly become fixed. Pro 8:1-3 Does not wisdom call out, and understanding raise her voice?… at the city gates she makes her speech: City gates served as centers of civic life, where elders heard cases, contracts were witnessed, and judgments were rendered. Wisdom stands where decisions affecting homes, commerce, and justice were made, showing that sound judgment and righteous leadership depend on submission to God’s truth. Her call reaches all who enter and leave the city, confronting them with the need to choose the path of wisdom. 2Sa 15:2-6 He would get up early and stand beside the road… “How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways? Wisdom addresses the inexperienced who remain content in careless ignorance. Their simplicity is not innocence but an unwillingness to develop discernment and receive instruction. The question exposes the danger of settling into habits that keep them from recognizing truth and making righteous choices. Pro 9:6 Leave your folly behind, and you will live;… How long will scoffers delight in their scorn Scoffers openly reject correction and treat truth with contempt. Their scorn reveals pride hardened against God’s instruction, often influencing others to dismiss what is right. Yet the question also shows that judgment has not come without warning; they are still being called to turn from their rebellion. 2Pe 3:3 Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days… and fools hate knowledge? Fools reject knowledge because they refuse the fear of the Lord, the foundation of true wisdom. Their problem is moral as well as intellectual: they resist instruction because it confronts their conduct. Wisdom calls them to abandon such resistance and receive the understanding that leads to life. Pro 18:2 A fool does not delight in understanding,… If you had repented at my rebuke, Wisdom calls the stubborn and misguided to turn from their course when correction exposes their sin. God’s rebuke is not arbitrary; it reveals the danger of rejecting His instruction and offers the way of wisdom. Rev 3:19 Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest… then surely I would have poured out my spirit on you; Those who receive correction are promised divine help, insight, and strength. The image of pouring out conveys God’s generous provision, enabling His people to understand and live according to His ways. Jol 2:28 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.… I would have made my words known to you. God does not leave responsive hearers without direction. He makes His counsel known so that they may discern truth, avoid ruin, and walk in wisdom. Deu 4:36 He let you hear His voice from heaven to discipline you… Because you refused my call, Wisdom publicly offered God’s instruction, warning, and direction, but many chose to reject it. Throughout Israel’s history, God repeatedly called His people through His servants, yet persistent refusal brought judgment. Isa 65:12 I will destine you for the sword, and you will all kneel… and no one took my outstretched hand, God’s invitation to receive help and correction was openly extended, yet it was ignored. The image conveys His readiness to guide and preserve those who would turn to Him, while also exposing the deliberate responsibility of those who refused. Isa 65:2 All day long I have held out My hands to an obstinate people… because you neglected all my counsel, God’s wisdom, revealed through His instruction, was not merely overlooked but deliberately rejected. Israel’s history repeatedly shows the consequences of disregarding His commands and pursuing its own course. Wisdom calls people to trust the Lord’s direction rather than their own judgment. Jer 7:24-26 Yet they did not listen or incline their ear… and wanted none of my correction, They also refused the discipline meant to expose sin and turn them from destruction. God’s correction reflects His rightful authority and His care for those who belong to Him, but pride and stubbornness reject it. Such refusal leaves a person accountable for the consequences of choosing folly over wisdom. Zep 3:2 She heeded no voice; she accepted no correction.… in turn I will mock your calamity; Wisdom warns that those who repeatedly reject correction will face the ruin their rebellion has produced. This is not petty cruelty but the vindication of God’s righteous judgment when stubborn refusal of counsel brings its consequences. Psa 37:13 but the Lord laughs, seeing that their day is coming. I will sneer when terror strikes you, Terror comes as the devastating result of rejecting God’s instruction. God’s sneering at terror metaphorically underscores the inevitability and righteousness of judgment. Those who despise reproof and choose folly will find no refuge when disaster arrives, showing that divine wisdom cannot be treated lightly without consequence. Psa 73:19 How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away… when your dread comes like a storm, Fear will arrive suddenly and with irresistible force, like a storm sweeping across the land. Those who have refused wisdom will find that the warnings they ignored were true. Isa 29:6 you will be visited by the LORD of Hosts… and your destruction like a whirlwind, Destruction will come swiftly and completely, leaving no power to resist it. The judgment is personal, falling upon those who deliberately rejected correction and the fear of the Lord. Hos 8:7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.… when distress and anguish overwhelm you. Calamity will bring inward torment as well as outward ruin. Having turned from wisdom, they will face the full consequences of their rebellion without relief. Job 15:24 Distress and anguish terrify him, overwhelming him… Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; Wisdom warns that persistent refusal of God’s instruction brings judgment. Those who continually reject correction will eventually face the consequences of their choices without relief. God’s patience is real, but His warnings are not empty; when rebellion hardens into settled contempt, the time for hearing and responding may pass. Jer 11:11 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring… they will earnestly seek me, but will not find me. Their distress will produce urgent searching, yet they will not find the wisdom they despised when it was freely offered. The tragedy is not that God withheld truth from them, but that they rejected it until judgment came. Proverbs presents wisdom as God’s gracious call to live in the fear of the Lord, a call that must be received before calamity exposes the folly of refusing it. Jhn 7:34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me;… For they hated knowledge They deliberately rejected the instruction wisdom offered and refused to know God’s truth in a way that would govern their conduct. Their ignorance was chosen, not unavoidable. Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge… and chose not to fear the LORD. They would not submit to God’s authority or honor Him with reverence and obedience. By rejecting the foundation of wisdom, they embraced the path that would bring the consequences described in the following verses. Mal 1:6 A son honors his father, and a servant his master.… They accepted none of my counsel; Wisdom had offered God’s instruction openly, calling the simple and wayward to turn from their path. Instead, they refused His guidance and chose to follow their own desires. Psa 107:11-12 because they rebelled against the words of God… they despised all my reproof. They rejected correction meant to expose sin and lead them back to obedience. Their contempt for reproof revealed hardened hearts, leaving them accountable for the consequences of their rebellion. Pro 5:12 “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised”… So they will eat the fruit of their own way, Those who reject wisdom bear the consequences of the course they have chosen. The harvest reflects the seed: folly, rebellion, and self-will produce sorrow and ruin. The agricultural image would have been familiar in Israel, where the fruit of one’s labor revealed the outcome of one’s work. Hos 10:13 You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice;… and be filled with their own devices. Their plans, formed apart from the fear of the Lord, become the source of their judgment. Rather than receiving the wisdom they despised, they are left with the full results of their own corrupt counsel and destructive choices. Pro 14:14 The backslider in heart receives the fill of his own ways,… For the waywardness of the simple will slay them, The simple, easily influenced and lacking discernment, are drawn from the path of wisdom into waywardness, a willful deviation from God’s moral direction. Their refusal to heed instruction leads to spiritual ruin and death. Pro 22:3 The prudent see danger and take cover, but… and the complacency of fools will destroy them. Fools settle into false security, ignoring correction and assuming they are safe while continuing in sin. Their careless confidence becomes the cause of their downfall, for they reject the wisdom that could preserve them. Pro 14:16 A wise man fears and turns from evil, but a fool… But whoever listens to me Wisdom calls people to turn from folly and submit to God’s instruction. Receiving wisdom involves trusting God’s order and living according to His commands. Pro 8:34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily… will dwell in safety, Those who walk in wisdom are not promised a life without hardship, but they rest under God’s care rather than living under the ruinous consequences of rebellion. Deu 33:12 Concerning Benjamin he said: “May the beloved of the LORD… secure from the fear of evil.” God gives His people confidence amid danger and uncertainty. Evil remains present in the world, yet it cannot overthrow those who belong to Him. Psa 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
