The Destruction of Edom

This is the vision of Obadiah:

Obadiah delivers a divine revelation concerning Edom. Though his book contains only one chapter, its message addresses God’s judgment on a nation that had long opposed Israel. Obadiah’s name, meaning “servant of the LORD,” suits his role as one who faithfully announces God’s decree.

Nam 1:1 This is the burden against Nineveh, the book…
Isa 1:1 This is the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem…
Hab 2:2 Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision…

This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom—

Edom was descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother, and occupied the mountainous territory south and east of the Dead Sea. Protected by steep cliffs and fortified settlements, the Edomites trusted in their position and strength. Their history of hostility toward Israel brought them under God’s judgment.

Jer 49:7-22 Concerning Edom, this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Ezk 35:1-15 Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,…
Mal 1:2-4 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……

We have heard a message from the LORD;

Obadiah speaks with the certainty of a revelation known among God’s servants. The coming judgment was not a rumor or political prediction, but the settled purpose of the LORD.

Jer 49:14 I have heard a message from the LORD;…
Isa 21:10 O my people, crushed on the threshing floor,…
Hab 3:2 O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in awe…

an envoy has been sent among the nations to say,

God summons surrounding nations as instruments of His judgment. Events among earthly kingdoms unfold under His authority, even when those nations act from their own ambitions.

Jer 50:2 Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a banner…
Jer 51:27 Raise a banner in the land! Blow the ram’s horn…
Isa 13:2 Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them.…

“Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—

The call to war announces Edom’s downfall. Her defenses, wealth, alliances, and pride would not preserve her when God brought nations against her.

Jer 50:14 Line up in formation around Babylon, all you who draw the bow!…
Jol 3:9 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war;…
Jer 50:29 Summon the archers against Babylon, all who string the bow.…

“Behold, I will make you small among the nations;

God announced Edom’s coming humiliation. Though Edom held defensible territory and benefited from major trade routes, its pride, violence, and hostility toward Israel would bring its decline. The nation descended from Esau would lose the influence and security it had valued.

Jer 49:15 For behold, I will make you small among nations,…
Ezk 35:13-15 You boasted against Me with your mouth…
Ezk 25:12-14 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Edom acted…

you will be deeply despised.

Edom’s downfall would include shame as well as weakness. Its actions against Judah, especially during Jerusalem’s distress, exposed its hatred toward its brother nation. God’s judgment would leave Edom rejected and dishonored among the surrounding peoples.

Mal 1:2-4 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……
Lam 4:21-22 So rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom,…
Psa 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom on the day…

The pride of your heart has deceived you,

Edom’s confidence in its strength and security blinded the nation to the certainty of God’s judgment. Descended from Esau, the Edomites maintained a long hostility toward Israel and trusted in their own position rather than acknowledging the Lord’s rule.

The Deliverance of Israel

For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.

God’s judgment would fall not only on Edom but on every nation that opposes His purposes and mistreats His people. Edom, descended from Esau, had long acted with hostility toward Judah and rejoiced when Jerusalem fell. Its judgment served as part of a wider declaration that no nation is beyond God’s rule. The coming Day of the LORD brings accountability, overturning human pride and rebellion.

Jol 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!…
Zep 1:14 The great Day of the LORD is near—near and coming quickly.…

As you have done, it will be done to you;

Edom’s violence, betrayal, and plundering during Judah’s calamity would be answered in kind. Having taken advantage of Jerusalem’s ruin, the Edomites would experience their own destruction. God’s judgment is righteous: nations and individuals are held responsible for the harm they willingly inflict on others.

The consequences of Edom’s deeds would fall directly upon Edom itself. What it sought against Judah would become its own fate. The warning extends beyond Edom, declaring that God will repay evil with perfect justice and bring every act of pride, cruelty, and treachery into judgment.

Psa 7:16 His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls…
1Ki 2:44 The king also said, “You know in your heart all the evil……

Zec 10:10 I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them…
Ezk 48:23-29 As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin will have one portion…

And the exiles of this host of the Israelites

Israelites carried away by foreign powers would not remain permanently scattered. Their displacement under Assyria and Babylon did not cancel God’s covenant purposes for His people.

Jer 31:8-10 Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north…
Ezk 36:24 For I will take you from among the nations…

will possess the land of the Canaanites

Israel would regain territory associated with the land God gave to their fathers, reversing the losses brought by judgment and invasion.

as far as Zarephath;

The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion

God will raise up leaders to administer His judgment and restore His people. Mount Zion, the City of David in Jerusalem, represents the place of God’s rule and the center of His covenant purposes for Israel. Their ascent portrays the public establishment of God’s authority after the defeat of His enemies.

Neh 9:27 So You delivered them into the hands of enemies…
Isa 2:3 And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up…
Jol 2:32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved…

to rule over the mountains of Esau.

Edom, descended from Esau and located southeast of the Dead Sea, had long opposed Israel and rejoiced over Judah’s downfall. Its rugged mountain strongholds would not protect it from judgment. Israel’s rule over Edom marks the reversal of Edom’s violence and pride and the fulfillment of God’s judgment against that nation.

Num 24:18-19 Edom will become a possession, as will Seir, his enemy;…
Gen 25:23 And He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb,…
Gen 27:29 May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you.…

And the kingdom will belong to the LORD.

Human kingdoms, including Edom, will ultimately give way to God’s undisputed reign. The restoration of Israel and the judgment of her enemies point beyond a temporary political victory to the full establishment of the Lord’s righteous rule over all the earth.

Psa 22:28 For dominion belongs to the LORD, and He rules…
Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…
Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…
