Ezekiel 29
Berean Study Bible

A Prophecy against Pharaoh

In the tenth year,

The tenth year of King Jehoiachin’s exile places the prophecy in 587 BC, while Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem was still underway. Judah had looked to Egypt for help against Babylon, but Egypt could not deliver the nation from the judgment God had decreed.

Jer 32:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Ezk 24:1 In the ninth year, on the tenth day of the tenth month,…
Ezk 40:1 In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning…

on the twelfth day of the tenth month,

The precise date anchors the prophecy in a real historical crisis and reflects Ezekiel’s careful record of the revelations he received during the exile.

2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Jer 52:4 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Ezk 33:21 In the twelfth year of our exile, on the fifth day…

the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

Ezekiel spoke by divine authority, not from personal opinion. The message begins a series of judgments against Egypt, showing that the Lord rules over Egypt as surely as He rules over Judah and Babylon.

Ezk 3:16 At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came…
Ezk 6:1 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Ezk 7:1 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

“Son of man,

God addresses Ezekiel as a mortal man entrusted with a divine message.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here.”…
Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified…

set your face against

He is to confront Egypt with unwavering resolve because its coming judgment is certain.

Ezk 25:2 Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites…
Ezk 35:2 Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir……
Ezk 28:21 “Son of man, set your face against Sidon”…

Pharaoh king of Egypt

The ruler was likely Hophra, whose kingdom trusted in military power, wealth, and false gods.

Jer 46:2 concerning Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt…
Jer 25:19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his officials, his leaders…
1Ki 3:1 Later, Solomon formed an alliance with Pharaoh…

and prophesy against him

Pharaoh himself was accountable to the Lord and would not escape His rule over nations.

Ezk 38:2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog of the land of Magog”…
Ezk 32:2 Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt……
Jer 46:13 This is the word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah…

and against all Egypt.

The judgment extended throughout the land, reaching its rulers, people, strength, and prosperity.

Jer 46:25 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Ezk 30:4 A sword will come against Egypt, and there will be anguish…
Ezk 30:10 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end…

Speak to him and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD says:

Ezekiel was sent to deliver God’s own judgment against Egypt. The message came not from political rivalry or personal hostility, but from the sovereign Lord who rules over every nation and king.

Exo 4:15 You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth.…
Ezk 3:11 Go to your people, the exiles; speak to them…
Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…

Behold, I am against you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt,

Pharaoh stood as Egypt’s supreme ruler and was commonly regarded as possessing divine authority. God’s declaration exposed the emptiness of that claim. Egypt had long influenced Israel’s history, at times serving as a place of bondage, refuge, and unreliable alliance.

Ezk 30:22 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 46:25 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Isa 19:1 This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides…

O great monster who lies among his rivers,

Pharaoh is pictured as a mighty creature in the Nile waterways, representing Egypt’s strength, wealth, and apparent security. Though formidable in human eyes, he remained under God’s authority and subject to His judgment.

Ezk 32:2 Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt……
Isa 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD.…
Psa 74:13-14 You divided the sea by Your strength;…

who says, ‘The Nile is mine; I made it myself.’

Pharaoh’s boast reflects the pride of a ruler who claimed ownership of Egypt’s greatest source of life and prosperity. The Nile did not belong to Pharaoh, nor had he created it. His claim of self-sufficiency and divine status brought him into direct opposition to the Creator.

Exo 7:20 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded;…
Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Psa 24:1-2 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s…

But I will put hooks in your jaws

God announces His judgment against Pharaoh, pictured as a great river creature seized and controlled by its Creator. Egypt’s ruler had exalted himself and claimed power over the Nile and the nation, but he would be unable to resist God’s decree.

Job 41:1-2 “Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook”…
2Ki 19:28 Because your rage and arrogance against Me have reached…
Isa 37:29 Because your rage and arrogance against Me have reached…

and cause the fish of your streams to cling to your scales.

The fish portray those bound to Pharaoh and Egypt’s strength. As the Nile supported Egypt’s agriculture, trade, and religious life, the people depended on the stability of their ruler and kingdom. Pharaoh’s judgment would bring consequences upon those joined to his rebellion and false confidence.

Ezk 32:3-4 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will spread My net…
Isa 19:8 Then the fishermen will mourn, all who cast a hook…

I will haul you up out of your rivers,

Pharaoh would be removed from the source of his perceived security and power. The Nile, which Egypt regarded as a source of life and prosperity, could not protect the nation when God acted. Egypt would be exposed, humbled, and stripped of its former dominance.

Hab 1:14-15 You have made men like the fish of the sea,…
Luk 5:4-7 When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon,…
Jer 16:16 But for now I will send for many fishermen,…

and all the fish of your streams will cling to your scales.

The repeated image stresses the completeness of the coming judgment. Pharaoh’s fall would not be isolated; the nation that followed him and shared in his pride would suffer with him.

Isa 50:2 Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer…
Exo 7:21-24 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad…
Rev 16:3 And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea…

I will leave you in the desert,

God announces Pharaoh’s humiliation and Egypt’s desolation. The land famed for the Nile’s fertility would become like a barren wilderness under His judgment.

Jer 50:12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;…
Ezk 19:13 Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty…

you and all the fish of your streams.

Pharaoh and the people, wealth, and power sustained by the Nile would share the same ruin. Egypt’s river, central to its agriculture and religion, could not deliver the nation from its Creator.

Isa 19:5-6 The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed…
Exo 7:21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad…

You will fall on the open field

Pharaoh is pictured as defeated and exposed, stripped of royal honor and protection.

Ezk 32:4 I will abandon you on the land and hurl you…
Jer 9:22 Declare that this is what the LORD says: “The corpses of men…

and will not be taken away or gathered for burial.

Denial of burial brought public disgrace in the ancient world, especially in Egypt, where burial rites were closely tied to hopes for the afterlife. God’s judgment would overturn Egypt’s pride and confidence.

Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread…
Jer 16:4 They will not be mourned or buried, but will lie…

I have given you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air.

The fallen would be left as carrion, showing the completeness of Egypt’s defeat and the certainty of God’s judgment against Pharaoh’s arrogance.

Deu 28:26 Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the air…
Jer 7:33 The corpses of this people will become food for the birds…
Ezk 39:4 On the mountains of Israel you will fall…

Then all the people of Egypt will know that I am the LORD.

God’s judgment on Egypt would expose the limits of its military power and political influence. Egypt had long been a major force in the region, yet it would stand accountable before the God of Israel. Its downfall would show that the LORD rules over every nation and fulfills His word in history.

Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…
Exo 14:18 The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I am honored…
Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…

For you were only a staff of reeds to the house of Israel.

Israel repeatedly looked to Egypt for protection against stronger empires, especially Assyria and Babylon. Rather than providing dependable help, Egypt proved weak and unreliable, like a reed that breaks under a person’s weight and causes injury. Judah’s reliance on Egypt revealed a failure to trust the LORD, while Egypt’s false promises contributed to Israel’s ruin.

2Ki 18:21 Look now, you are trusting in Egypt…
Isa 36:6 Look now, you are trusting in Egypt…
Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help…

When Israel took hold of you with their hands,

Israel repeatedly looked to Egypt for military protection against stronger powers, seeking security there rather than in the Lord. Egypt appeared capable of providing aid, but its promises and influence proved unstable.

2Ki 18:21 Look now, you are trusting in Egypt…
Isa 36:6 Look now, you are trusting in Egypt…
Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help…

you splintered, tearing all their shoulders;

Like a fragile staff that breaks in the hand, Egypt injured those who depended on it. Instead of strengthening Judah in its conflicts with Assyria and Babylon, Egyptian support brought greater danger and disappointment.

Isa 9:4 For as in the day of Midian, you have shattered the yoke…
Psa 81:6 “I relieved his shoulder of the burden;…”…
Isa 10:27 On that day the burden will be lifted from your shoulders,…

when they leaned on you, you broke,

Egypt could not bear the weight of Israel’s trust. Its political alliances failed, and its power would itself be broken by Babylon according to God’s judgment.

Isa 31:3 But the Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh…
Isa 30:3 But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame,…
Jer 37:7-10 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says…

and their backs were wrenched.

Israel suffered the consequences of relying on Egypt, bearing the burden of failed alliances, military defeat, and exile.

Isa 51:23 I will place it in the hands of your tormentors,…
Psa 66:11 You led us into the net; You laid burdens on our backs.
Psa 129:3 The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows…

The Desolation of Egypt

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:

God announces His judgment with the full authority of the sovereign ruler over Egypt and every nation. Ezekiel speaks not on his own behalf but as the messenger of God’s settled decree.

Ezk 30:10 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end…
Jer 46:25 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…

I will bring a sword against you

Egypt’s strength, wealth, and military reputation would not protect it from judgment. God would use invading armies to humble the nation that had trusted in its power and false gods.

Ezk 14:17 Or if I bring a sword against that land,…
Ezk 30:4-5 A sword will come against Egypt, and there will be anguish…
Ezk 21:3 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you,…

and cut off from you man and beast.

The devastation would reach throughout the land, bringing loss of life, ruined livelihoods, and desolation. Egypt’s population, herds, agriculture, and economic stability would all suffer under God’s judgment.

Zep 1:3 “I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away…”…
Ezk 25:13-14 and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword…
Ezk 14:21 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse……

The land of Egypt will become a desolate wasteland.

Egypt’s fertile fields and wealth depended on the Nile, yet God declared that its prosperity would be overturned. Though Egypt had long stood as a major regional power and was often regarded as a potential ally or refuge, its strength could not shield it from judgment. The devastation would expose the weakness of a nation marked by pride and idolatry.

Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Jer 46:19 Pack your bags for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt!…
Isa 19:5-7 The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed…

Then they will know that I am the LORD.

Egypt’s downfall would reveal that the God of Israel rules over kings, rivers, armies, and nations, leading Egypt and the nations to acknowledge Him as the one true God. His judgment would make clear that no earthly power exists independently of His authority.

Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…
Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…
Ezk 30:8 Then they will know that I am the LORD when I set fire…

Because you said, ‘The Nile is mine; I made it,’

Egypt’s ruler claimed ownership of the river that sustained the nation’s agriculture, commerce, and life. By treating the Nile as his own creation, he exalted himself in the place of God. The judgment answered that arrogance by showing that the Creator alone controls the land and its resources.

Psa 95:5 The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed…
Isa 37:16 O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim,…
Psa 24:1 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s…

therefore I am against you and against your rivers.

God’s judgment reaches Egypt’s Nile and its canals, the foundation of the nation’s agriculture, trade, and life. Egypt treated the river as a source of divine power, but the Lord declares His authority over both the land and the objects of its worship.

Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Isa 19:5-7 The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed…

I will turn the land of Egypt into a ruin, a desolate wasteland

Egypt’s prosperity and military strength would not protect it from devastation. The fertile land dependent on the Nile would become barren, reversing the security and abundance for which Egypt was known.

Ezk 32:15 When I make the land of Egypt a desolation…
Ezk 30:7 They will be desolate among desolate lands,…
Jer 46:19 Pack your bags for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt!…

from Migdol to Syene,

The judgment would extend from Migdol in the north near Egypt’s eastern frontier to Syene in the far south near modern Aswan. No region of the kingdom would escape.

Ezk 30:6 For this is what the LORD says: The allies of Egypt…
Jer 44:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah…
Exo 14:2 Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp…

and as far as the border of Cush.

Egypt’s southern boundary near Cush would also be included, marking the full extent of the land under judgment. The declaration presents Egypt’s humiliation as complete, from its northern defenses to its southern border.

Isa 18:1-2 Woe to the land of whirring wings, along the rivers of Cush,…
Zep 3:10 From beyond the rivers of Cush My worshipers,…
Ezk 30:4-5 A sword will come against Egypt, and there will be anguish…

No foot of man or beast will pass through,

Egypt’s judgment would be so severe that its land would be emptied of normal life and travel. The picture is one of complete devastation: people displaced, herds gone, and a once-powerful kingdom reduced to desolation.

Isa 34:10 It will not be quenched—day or night. Its smoke will ascend…
Jer 32:43 And fields will be bought in this land, about which…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…

and it will be uninhabited for forty years.

The forty-year period marks a definite season of divine judgment. Following Babylon’s conquest under Nebuchadnezzar, Egypt suffered defeat, loss of power, and decline. Its desolation exposed the weakness of a nation that had trusted in its own strength and idols.

Num 14:33-34 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness…
Num 32:13 The anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
Isa 6:11-12 Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied……

I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among desolate lands,

God announced severe judgment on Egypt for its pride and false security. Once a dominant power in the ancient world, Egypt would be brought low like other nations judged for opposing God’s purposes. Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian campaigns against Egypt marked the beginning of this humiliation.

Ezk 32:15 When I make the land of Egypt a desolation…
Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Jer 46:19 Pack your bags for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt!…

and her cities will lie desolate for forty years among the ruined cities.

The judgment would be widespread, reaching Egypt’s cities as well as its rulers. Forty years marked a definite period of devastation and weakness, showing that Egypt’s downfall would not be permanent but would accomplish God’s purpose of humbling the nation.

Ezk 30:7 They will be desolate among desolate lands,…
Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…
Isa 64:10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness.…

And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations

Egypt’s people would be removed from their homeland through war, captivity, and displacement. The scattering exposed the weakness of a kingdom that had relied on its military strength, wealth, and political influence.

Ezk 22:15 I will disperse you among the nations…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…
Psa 106:27 to disperse their offspring among the nations…

and scatter them throughout the countries.

Egypt would lose the unity and security that had supported its power for centuries. Though God later promised Egypt a measure of restoration, it would no longer stand as the great empire it had been.

Ezk 20:23 However, with an uplifted hand I swore to them…
Jer 9:16 I will scatter them among the nations…
Zec 7:14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind…

For this is what the Lord GOD says:

God announces His own decree through Ezekiel, leaving no doubt that Egypt’s coming judgment and later restoration rest on His authority.

Ezk 30:2 Son of man, prophesy and declare that this is…
Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…

At the end of forty years

Egypt’s humiliation would last for a fixed period determined by God. The nation would endure judgment, loss of power, and dispersion before any restoration began.

Num 14:33-34 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness…
Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Ezk 4:6 When you have completed these days, lie down again,…

I will gather the Egyptians from the nations

God would not leave Egypt permanently scattered. After judging the nation for its pride and false security, He would bring Egyptians back from the lands where they had been driven.

Ezk 11:17 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Ezk 20:34 With a strong hand, an outstretched arm, and outpoured wrath…
Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…

to which they were scattered.

The scattering describes the national collapse that followed foreign conquest and domination. Egypt would survive, but its restoration would not return it to its former position of greatness.

Ezk 11:16 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…
Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…

I will restore Egypt from captivity

After Babylon’s conquest under Nebuchadnezzar, Egypt would not remain permanently desolate. God’s judgment would end, yet Egypt’s recovery would be limited rather than a return to imperial strength.

Isa 19:22 And the LORD will strike Egypt with a plague;…
Isa 19:20 It will be a sign and a witness to the LORD of Hosts…
Isa 19:21 The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt…

and bring them back to the land of Pathros,

The Egyptians would be returned to Upper Egypt, their ancient homeland in the southern Nile region. Their restoration would preserve the nation and its identity.

Isa 11:11 On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time…
Jer 44:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah…
Jer 44:15 Then all the men who knew that their wives…

the land of their origin.

Egypt’s return to its ancestral land would mark a renewal after humiliation and displacement, though stripped of the prominence it once possessed.

Gen 10:6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
Ezk 30:14 I will lay waste Pathros, set fire to Zoan…
Jer 46:26 I will deliver them into the hands of those…

There they will be a lowly kingdom.

Egypt would continue as a nation but no longer dominate surrounding peoples as it had in earlier centuries. Its reduced status would display God’s rule over the rise and decline of kingdoms.

Ezk 30:13 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will destroy the idols…
Isa 19:16 In that day the Egyptians will be like women.…
Isa 19:17 The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt;…

Egypt will be the lowliest of kingdoms

Once a dominant power of the ancient world, Egypt would be brought low under God’s judgment. Successive foreign rulers and invasions stripped the nation of the imperial strength it had possessed in earlier centuries.

Dan 4:17 This decision is the decree of the watchers,…
Dan 2:39 But after you, there will arise another kingdom…
Deu 28:43-44 The foreigner living among you will rise higher and higher…

and will never again exalt itself above the nations.

Egypt would not return to its former position as a great empire exercising supremacy over surrounding peoples. Its decline would stand as a lasting reversal of its former pride and influence.

Isa 2:11 The proud look of man will be humbled…
Psa 47:2-3 How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King…
Psa 33:10-12 The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations;…

For I will diminish Egypt

Egypt’s fall would ultimately come by the Lord’s decree, though carried out through historical events and conquering kingdoms. Its reduced power was not accidental but part of God’s judgment.

Jer 46:17 There they will cry out: ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;…
Isa 19:1-3 This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides…
Jer 43:10-13 Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts,…

so that it will never again rule over the nations.

Egypt continued as a nation, but it never recovered its earlier role as a ruling world power. Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome each held Egypt under foreign control, confirming the enduring loss of its former dominance.

Isa 19:4 I will deliver the Egyptians into the hands of a harsh master,…
Dan 11:42-43 He will extend his power over many countries,…
Jer 46:25-26 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…

Egypt will never again be an object of trust for the house of Israel,

Egypt had repeatedly drawn Israel into political and military dependence, especially when Assyria and Babylon threatened the region. Rather than strengthening Judah, such alliances exposed its unfaithfulness to the Lord and brought further danger.

2Ki 18:21 Look now, you are trusting in Egypt…
Isa 30:3 But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame,…
Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help…

but will remind them of their iniquity in turning to the Egyptians.

Egypt’s downfall would stand as a lasting witness to Israel’s sin of seeking security from a pagan power instead of obeying God. Their failed reliance on Egypt would expose the emptiness of foreign alliances.

Isa 30:1-2 “Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the LORD……
Ezk 17:15 But this king rebelled against Babylon by sending his envoys…
Jer 42:19-22 The LORD has told you, O remnant of Judah,…

Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.”

Through Egypt’s judgment and Israel’s recognition of its own rebellion, God would make His sovereign authority known.

Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…
Exo 14:18 The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I am honored…
Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…

Egypt the Reward of Nebuchadnezzar

In the twenty-seventh year,

The date falls in 571 BC, measured from Jehoiachin’s exile in 597 BC, nearly sixteen years after Jerusalem’s fall. It places the prophecy during Babylon’s long campaign against Tyre and before its coming judgment on Egypt.

1Ki 16:15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa’s reign over Judah,…
2Ki 15:1 In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam’s reign…
Ezk 1:1 In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month,…

on the first day of the first month,

Nisan, corresponding to March–April, marked the beginning of Israel’s religious year and the season of Passover, when Israel remembered the Lord’s deliverance from Egypt. The setting gives added weight to the announcement of Egypt’s downfall.

Exo 40:2 On the first day of the first month, set up the tabernacle…
2Ch 29:17 For eight more days they consecrated the house of the LORD…
Ezr 7:9 He had begun the journey from Babylon…

the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

Ezekiel speaks by divine revelation, delivering the Lord’s judgment and directing attention to God’s rule over Babylon, Egypt, and the nations.

Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Ezk 3:16 At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came…
Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“Son of man,

Ezekiel is addressed as a human servant entrusted with God’s message. The repeated title keeps the prophet’s mortality and dependence on God in view while he speaks to rulers and nations.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here.”…
Ezk 4:1 Now you, son of man, take a brick, place it before…

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon

Nebuchadnezzar II reigned over Babylon from 605 to 562 BC and established it as the dominant power of the ancient Near East. God used his armies to judge Judah, Tyre, Egypt, and other nations.

Dan 1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,…
2Ki 24:1-2 During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon…
Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…

caused his army to labor strenuously against Tyre.

Babylon’s siege of Tyre lasted about thirteen years, from 585 to 572 BC. Tyre’s fortified island position, supplied by the sea, made the campaign costly and difficult.

Ezk 26:7-12 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I will…
Ezk 26:3-6 therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, O Tyre,…
Isa 23:13-15 Look at the land of the Chaldeans—a people now of no account…

Every head was made bald and every shoulder made raw.

The soldiers suffered from the prolonged work of building siege works, transporting materials, and maintaining the encirclement. Their heads and shoulders bore the marks of heavy loads, armor, and labor.

Ezk 7:18 They will put on sackcloth, and terror will overwhelm them.…
Jer 48:37 For every head is shaved and every beard is clipped;…
Isa 10:27 On that day the burden will be lifted from your shoulders,…

But he and his army received no wages from Tyre for the labor they expended on it.

Nebuchadnezzar gained no substantial plunder from Tyre to compensate for the expense of the siege. Tyre’s wealth was apparently removed or protected before Babylon could seize it, leaving the king and his army without the expected reward.

Jer 22:13 Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,…
Lev 19:13 You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him.…
Deu 24:14-15 Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy…

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:

The Lord speaks with absolute authority, declaring His judgment and directing the course of nations according to His purpose.

Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says…
Jer 50:18 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Jer 21:4 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…

I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,

Egypt’s long-standing power would be humbled as God handed the nation over to Nebuchadnezzar. Babylon’s king acted as the instrument of divine judgment, despite pursuing his own imperial ambitions.

Jer 27:6-7 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
Ezk 30:10 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end…
Jer 43:10 Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts,…

who will carry off its wealth, seize its spoil, and remove its plunder.

Babylon’s invasion would bring Egypt’s treasures, resources, and goods into Nebuchadnezzar’s possession. The conquest would leave the nation stripped of the wealth that had supported its strength and influence.

Jer 15:13 Your wealth and your treasures I will give up as plunder,…
Isa 8:4 For before the boy knows how to cry ‘Father’ or ‘Mother,’…
Zep 1:13 Their wealth will be plundered and their houses laid waste.…

This will be the wages for his army.

Egypt’s riches would serve as payment for Babylon’s army after its difficult campaign against Tyre, where the soldiers had received little material reward. God would compensate Nebuchadnezzar’s forces through the spoils of Egypt.

1Sa 30:24-25 Who will listen to your proposal? The share of the one…
Num 31:27 Then divide the captives between the troops…
Deu 20:14 But the women, children, livestock, and whatever else…

I have given him the land of Egypt as the reward for his labor,

Nebuchadnezzar’s long siege of Tyre brought Babylon little of the expected spoil. God therefore appointed Egypt, with its wealth and strategic importance, as Babylon’s compensation. Egypt’s fall would demonstrate that its strength and resources were subject to God’s rule.

Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
Jer 43:10 Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Jer 25:9 behold, I will summon all the families of the north,…

because it was done for Me,

Babylon’s campaign against Tyre fulfilled God’s purpose, though Nebuchadnezzar acted from his own political and military aims. God directed the affairs of nations and used Babylon as an instrument of judgment.

Hab 1:6 For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans—…
Isa 10:5-7 Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger; the staff…
Isa 45:1-5 This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed,…

declares the Lord GOD.

The outcome was certain because it rested on the decree of the sovereign God, who rules over kings, nations, and the course of history.

Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…
Amo 3:13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,…

In that day

God points to the time when He will judge Egypt and restore hope to Israel, demonstrating His sovereign control over both nations.

Isa 11:10-12 On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner…
Isa 27:12-13 In that day the LORD will thresh from the flowing Euphrates…
Jer 30:8-9 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…

I will cause a horn to sprout for the house of Israel,

God promises renewed strength and honor for Israel after its humiliation and exile. The horn anticipates the restoration of Davidic rule and ultimately finds its fulfillment in the Messiah.

Psa 132:17 There I will make a horn grow for David;…
Luk 1:69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us…
1Sa 2:10 Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.…

and I will open your mouth to speak among them.

Ezekiel’s ability to speak freely would be restored as God’s judgments came to pass, confirming that his earlier warnings had been true.

Ezk 3:27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth…
Ezk 24:27 On that day your mouth will be opened…
Ezk 33:22 Now the evening before the fugitive arrived,…

Then they will know that I am the LORD.”

Through Egypt’s downfall, Israel’s renewal, and Ezekiel’s fulfilled prophecies, the people would recognize the Lord’s authority and faithfulness.

Ezk 6:7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know…
Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…
Ezk 38:23 I will magnify and sanctify Myself, and I will reveal Myself…
