Berean Study Bible Absent in Body, Present in SpiritPaul openly shares the depth of his concern so the believers will understand the seriousness of his ministry on their behalf. Php 1:12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances… how much I am struggling for you He labored earnestly through prayer, teaching, and the defense of sound doctrine, seeking their spiritual maturity and protection from error. Col 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy… and for those at Laodicea, Laodicea was a prosperous city near Colossae and Hierapolis, and its church faced many of the same pressures and false teachings affecting the region. Col 4:13 For I testify about him that he goes to great pains… and for all who have not met me face to face, Although many had never seen Paul personally, he regarded them as fellow believers under his apostolic care and strengthened them through faithful written instruction. 2Jn 1:12 I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not… that they may be encouraged in heart, Paul seeks inner strengthening for the Colossian believers as they face pressure from false teachers and spiritual confusion. He desires that they be steadied in faith and comforted by the assurance of God’s work in them. 2Th 2:16-17 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,… knit together in love, Their strength is closely tied to their unity. Love joins believers into one body, guarding the church from division and giving a visible witness to their common life in Christ. Eph 4:15-16 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will… and filled with the full riches of complete understanding, God does not leave His people with uncertain or incomplete knowledge. He provides a settled understanding of the truth revealed in Christ, a treasure far greater than human philosophy or religious speculation. Col 1:9-10 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God… so that they may know the mystery of God, What had been hidden in earlier ages has now been made known through God’s redemptive work. The Colossians are to rest in the revealed truth of salvation rather than seek secret wisdom elsewhere. Eph 3:3-6 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation… namely Christ, Christ Himself is the center of God’s revealed plan. In Him believers find the full provision of God for salvation, wisdom, and spiritual life. Col 1:26-27 the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations… in whom Christ alone stands at the center of God’s saving purpose. Paul presents Him as supreme over creation, the church, and every spiritual power. Col 1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. are hidden God’s wisdom is not discovered through secret rites, visions, or human speculation. It is made known in Christ to those who belong to Him. 1Co 2:7 No, we speak of the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God… all the treasures Nothing necessary for knowing God or receiving salvation lies outside Christ. The fullness found in Him exposes the emptiness of teachings that promised deeper spiritual insight through other mediators. Pro 2:4-5 if you seek it like silver and search it out… of wisdom and knowledge. Christ reveals God’s truth, purpose, and way of salvation. Human philosophy and religious tradition cannot provide what God has fully made known in His Son. Rom 11:33 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge… I say this Paul writes with pastoral urgency, preparing the Colossian believers to recognize the danger of teaching that departs from Christ. His instruction carries apostolic authority and aims to keep the church grounded in the truth they received. Jhn 16:1 I have told you these things so that you will not fall away… so that no one will deceive you False teachers sought to draw believers away from the sufficiency of Christ by mixing the gospel with human traditions, speculative ideas, and religious practices. Paul warns that such error is not harmless but intended to undermine confidence in Christ. 2Th 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come… by smooth rhetoric. Persuasive speech can make falsehood appear reasonable and attractive. The Colossians were not to judge teaching by its eloquence or intellectual appeal, but by whether it remained faithful to Christ and the gospel. Rom 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ… For although I am absent from you in body, Paul wrote while imprisoned, likely in Rome around AD 60–62. Distance limited direct oversight, so letters and trusted coworkers helped maintain instruction and fellowship among the churches. 1Co 5:3 Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you… I am present with you in spirit, Though separated physically, Paul remained united with the Colossians in concern, prayer, and pastoral care. Their life as a church mattered deeply to him. 1Co 5:4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus… and I delight to see your orderly condition Reports of their disciplined unity encouraged Paul. Their shared commitment to sound teaching and faithful conduct strengthened the church against error and division. 1Co 14:40 But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner. and firm faith in Christ. Their stability rested on Christ Himself rather than on human traditions or false spiritual claims. Paul rejoiced that they had continued in the gospel they received. 1Pe 5:9 Resist him, standing firm in your faith…
Alive with ChristPaul draws his instruction from the sufficiency of Christ and warns believers not to be drawn away by teachings that diminish His person or work. Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,… just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, Their faith began with receiving Jesus as the risen Messiah and rightful Lord, trusting Him for salvation and submitting to His authority. Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed… continue to walk in Him, That same faith was to shape their daily conduct, producing steadfast obedience and growth in the life Christ gives. Col 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord… rooted and built up in Him, Believers draw their life and strength from union with Christ while continuing to grow under His authority. Paul joins the images of a plant and a building: roots provide stability and nourishment, while a structure endures only on a secure foundation. Christ is the foundation of the church and of each believer’s life. Eph 3:17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts… established in the faith as you were taught, The Colossian believers had received the apostolic gospel through Epaphras, Paul’s fellow servant. They were to remain firm in that teaching rather than be drawn into human traditions, ascetic practices, or speculative claims. The faith centered on Christ’s person and saving work and did not require added knowledge or spiritual intermediaries. Col 1:23 if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm… and overflowing with thankfulness. Gratitude follows the forgiveness, reconciliation, and new life God has provided through Christ. Thankfulness reflected confidence in Christ’s sufficiency and guarded the church against discontent and deceptive alternatives. 2Co 9:11-12 You will be enriched in every way to be generous… See to it that no one takes you captive Paul warns the Colossian believers against being drawn away from the truth they had received in Christ. False teachers were presenting ideas that could enslave their thinking and weaken their confidence in the gospel. Heb 13:9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings,… through philosophy and empty deception, These teachings claimed wisdom but offered no true knowledge of God. They blended religious speculation, ascetic practices, and human ideas in ways that obscured the sufficiency of Christ. 1Co 1:20-25 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe?… which are based on human tradition Religious customs and inherited teachings become dangerous when they are given authority apart from or above God’s revealed word. The error confronting the church rested on human systems rather than the truth proclaimed by the apostles. Mrk 7:7-13 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine… and the spiritual forces of the world Behind such error stood the fallen powers that oppose God and seek to keep people bound to worldly patterns. These influences promoted rules, fears, and spiritual intermediaries in place of direct dependence on Christ. Gal 4:3 So also, when we were children, we were enslaved… rather than on Christ. Christ alone is the source of wisdom, salvation, and spiritual fullness. Any teaching that redirects trust from Him, however persuasive it may appear, leads away from the truth. Jhn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.… For in Christ Paul directs the Colossians to Christ alone amid teachings that offered spiritual advancement through lesser beings, rituals, or secret knowledge. Every saving reality is centered in Him. Col 1:19 For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, all the fullness Nothing needed for salvation, reconciliation with God, or spiritual life is lacking in Christ. The fullness (Greek: pleroma) signifies completeness and totality. He does not merely reveal part of God’s truth or power. Eph 3:19 of the love of Christ, and to know this love… of the Deity Jesus Christ possesses the complete divine nature. He is fully God, not a created intermediary, angelic being, or lesser manifestation of God. Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities… dwells God’s fullness abides permanently in Christ. His deity was not temporarily bestowed upon Him during His earthly ministry but belongs eternally to His person. Jhn 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.… in bodily form. The eternal Son truly took on human flesh. Jesus remained fully God while becoming fully man, making Him the sufficient Savior who could bear sin and reconcile humanity to God. Luk 24:39 Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself.… And you have been made complete in Christ, Believers are fully accepted by God through union with Christ. Paul wrote against teachings that added religious rules, mystical experiences, or special knowledge to faith in Him. Nothing beyond Christ is needed for salvation or spiritual standing before God. Jhn 1:16 From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. who is the head over every ruler and authority. Christ possesses authority over every earthly government and spiritual power. No angelic being, hostile force, or human ruler stands outside His rule. This assured the Colossian believers that the powers promoted by false teachers could neither surpass Christ nor threaten those who belong to Him. Eph 1:20-22 which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him… In Him you were also circumcised, Union with Christ brings an inward covenant change that physical circumcision could only signify. God’s people once bore that outward sign in their bodies; those who belong to Christ receive the reality it pointed toward. Rom 2:29 No, a man is a Jew because he is one inwardly,… in the putting off of your sinful nature, Through Christ’s death and resurrection, the dominion of the old sinful self has been broken. Believers are no longer defined by their former rebellion against God, though they continue to grow in holiness. Rom 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with Him… with the circumcision performed by Christ Christ accomplishes this cleansing and renewal through His saving work. It rests on His sacrifice and power, not on human achievement or religious ceremony. Rom 6:5-6 For if we have been united with Him in His death… and not by human hands. The change is inward and divine, produced by God rather than by an external rite. Mrk 14:58 We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple…… And having been buried with Him in baptism, Baptism publicly portrays the believer’s union with Christ in His death and burial, marking the end of the old life under sin. Rom 6:3-4 Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized…… you were raised with Him Believers were raised with Christ through faith in God’s power, receiving new spiritual life and a new standing before Him, with the promise of future bodily resurrection. Eph 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him… through your faith in the power of God, This union is received through faith in the power of God, not through the outward act alone. The same divine power that raised Christ from the dead brings spiritual life to those who trust in him. 1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power… who raised Him from the dead. Christ’s resurrection was God’s decisive victory over sin and death, confirming Jesus’ identity and securing the hope of eternal life for His people. Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him… When you were dead in your trespasses Sin had left humanity separated from God and unable to restore itself to Him. Trespasses include the deliberate rebellion and disobedience that marked life apart from Christ. Eph 2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, The Gentile believers had stood outside Israel’s covenant sign and shared the fallen condition of all people. Their hearts had not been cleansed or set apart for God. Eph 2:11-12 Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles… God made you alive with Christ. God acted through Christ’s death and resurrection to give spiritual life to those who believed. United with the risen Christ, they were brought from alienation into fellowship with God. Eph 2:5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead… He forgave us all our trespasses, Christ’s sacrifice secured the full removal of sin’s guilt. God forgives every trespass of those who are in Christ and restores them to a right relationship with Him. Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood,… having canceled the debt Humanity stood guilty before God, with sin creating an obligation no one could repay. The image is of a written record of indebtedness, a document listing charges and liabilities. Mat 18:27 His master had compassion on him, forgave his debt… ascribed to us in the decrees God’s righteous commands exposed sin and established the just penalty for disobedience. Rather than providing a means for sinners to justify themselves, the law revealed their need for atonement. Eph 2:15 by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments… that stood against us. The record of guilt testified against sinners and condemned them before a holy God. It stood as an obstacle to reconciliation because God’s justice could not overlook sin. Deu 31:26 Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark… He took it away, Christ removed the condemning record completely through His sacrificial death. The guilt and penalty belonging to His people were no longer held against them. Jhn 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,… nailing it to the cross! At the cross, Jesus bore the judgment sin deserved and satisfied the legal demands of divine justice. His death openly dealt with the debt of sin and secured forgiveness for those united to Him. Act 2:23 He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge,… And having disarmed the powers and authorities, Christ stripped demonic rulers and hostile spiritual forces of their claim and power through His atoning death. Their accusations against believers were canceled when the record of debt was nailed to the cross. Earthly authorities also stand under His rule, unable to overturn God’s purpose. Luk 11:22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him,… He made a public spectacle of them, Like defeated enemies displayed in a Roman triumph, these powers were openly exposed as conquered. What appeared to be Christ’s humiliation became the revelation of their defeat and shame. 1Co 4:9 For it seems to me that God has displayed us apostles… triumphing over them by the cross. The cross, designed as an instrument of execution and disgrace, became the means of Christ’s victory over sin, Satan, death, and every opposing power. Through His death and resurrection, He secured the deliverance of all who belong to Him. 2Co 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us… Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink, Dietary regulations had distinguished Israel under the Mosaic covenant, but they were not the basis of acceptance with God. Believers are not to be condemned over food or drink as though such practices determine spiritual standing. Rom 14:3-4 The one who eats everything must not belittle… or with regard to a feast, Israel’s annual feasts, including Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles, recalled God’s saving acts and His provision for His people. They pointed beyond themselves to the redemption accomplished in Christ and were not to be imposed as requirements for righteousness. Lev 23:2-4 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them,… a New Moon, Monthly observances marked Israel’s worship calendar and included appointed sacrifices. Though ordained for Israel, they belonged to the former covenant order and anticipated the greater reality fulfilled in Christ. Num 28:11-15 At the beginning of every month, you are to present… or a Sabbath. The Sabbath was a covenant sign for Israel, providing rest and setting apart the nation for God. In Christ, believers enter the rest secured by His completed work and are not to be judged by the observance of such days. Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.… These are a shadow of the things to come, The dietary regulations, sacred days, festivals, and Sabbaths given under the old covenant were temporary signs pointing beyond themselves. They prepared God’s people for the greater reality fulfilled in Christ and were never meant to provide righteousness apart from Him. Heb 10:1 For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come,… but the body that casts it belongs to Christ. Christ is the substance to which the shadows pointed. In Him, God’s redemptive purposes are fulfilled, and believers are made complete through His saving work rather than through observance of the ceremonial requirements of the old covenant. Heb 10:5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said:… Do not let anyone who delights in false humility Some teachers promoted severe self-denial as evidence of superior spirituality. Their humility was outward and self-chosen, masking pride and drawing attention away from Christ. Isa 58:3-5 “Why have we fasted, and You have not seen?”… and the worship of angels Angel veneration likely reflected mystical and religious influences present in the region. Angels are God’s servants, not mediators or objects of devotion. Giving them worship denied the unique supremacy and sufficiency of Christ. Rev 22:8-9 And I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.… disqualify you with speculation about what he has seen. These teachers claimed visions and secret spiritual experiences to establish authority over others. Their claims went beyond the gospel and threatened to rob believers of confidence in the reward found in Christ. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… Such a person is puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind. Though presenting themselves as humble and enlightened, they were driven by fleshly pride. Their teaching came from human imagination rather than submission to Christ, the true source of spiritual life and understanding. 1Co 8:1-2 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know… He has lost connection to the head, Christ is the supreme authority and source of life for His Church. Paul warns that those who pursue man-made religion, visions, or spiritual intermediaries have turned away from Christ’s sufficiency. Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church;… from whom the whole body, The Church consists of all believers united to Christ and to one another. No member stands independently, since each depends on the life and direction that come from the Head. Eph 1:22-23 And God put everything under His feet and made Him head… supported and knit together by its joints and ligaments, God strengthens His people through their shared faith, service, instruction, and care for one another. As a body depends on every part functioning properly, the Church requires faithful unity under Christ. Eph 4:16 From Him the whole body, fitted and held together… grows as God causes it to grow. Spiritual life and maturity come from God, not from religious rules or human wisdom. The Church grows in strength and holiness as Christ supplies what His people need. 1Co 3:6-7 I planted the seed and Apollos watered it,… If you have died with Christ Believers share in Christ’s death through faith, having been separated from the dominion of sin and the former life. Baptism outwardly identifies them with His death and resurrection. Rom 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe… to the spiritual forces of the world, These worldly powers include religious systems, human traditions, and spiritual influences that operate apart from Christ and seek to bind people through external observances. Gal 4:3 So also, when we were children, we were enslaved… why, as though you still belonged to the world, Those united to Christ no longer live under the authority of the fallen world order. Their identity and standing are found in Him rather than in its standards. Jhn 17:14-16 I have given them Your word and the world has hated them.… do you submit to its regulations: Paul warns the Colossians against accepting man-made rules promoted as necessary for spiritual maturity. Such regulations deny the sufficiency of Christ and draw believers back into bondage. Mrk 7:7-8 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine… “Do not handle, False teachers promoted strict rules about abstaining from material things, treating external restrictions as a path to spiritual maturity. Such commands placed human regulations alongside the gospel and obscured Christ’s sufficiency. Mrk 7:7-8 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine… do not taste, Dietary prohibitions were being presented as measures of holiness. Paul rejects the idea that food or abstinence can improve a believer’s standing before God, since life in Christ is not governed by ceremonial restrictions. 1Ti 4:3-5 They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from… do not touch!”? Rules concerning contact with supposedly defiling things reflected an outward religion centered on avoidance. Christ has fulfilled the former purity distinctions, and holiness comes through union with Him rather than through man-made regulations. Lev 11:8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses;… These will all perish with use, The foods and material things regulated by the false teachers were temporary and consumed in ordinary use. Their restrictions could not produce spiritual life or add to Christ’s finished work. Jhn 6:27 Do not work for food that perishes, but for food… because they are based on human commands and teachings. The rules promoted at Colossae went beyond God’s revealed commands and reflected human religious traditions. By combining legalism, asceticism, and mystical practices, they diverted attention from Christ, who alone is sufficient for salvation and spiritual growth. Mrk 7:7-9 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine… Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, Paul warns that severe religious rules can look spiritual and disciplined while resting on human tradition rather than God’s command. Their outward rigor may impress others, but appearance does not establish true wisdom or holiness. Pro 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end… with their self-prescribed worship, These practices created forms of devotion God had not required. By adding regulations and rituals as measures of spirituality, teachers in Colossae elevated human rules alongside God’s truth. Mat 15:9 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine… their false humility, Their humility was displayed through religious performance and self-denial, yet it concealed pride. Rather than depending on Christ, they sought spiritual standing through visible acts of devotion. Isa 58:3-5 “Why have we fasted, and You have not seen?”… and their harsh treatment of the body; Some promoted severe bodily discipline, including restrictions concerning food and physical comforts, as though the body itself were the source of sin. God created the body, and outward severity cannot produce inward purity. 1Ti 4:3-5 They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from… but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Human regulations cannot restrain sinful desires or change the heart. Victory over the flesh comes through union with Christ and the transforming work of the Spirit, not through self-made religious discipline. Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
