Berean Study Bible Paul’s Greeting to TimothyPaul begins by identifying himself as an apostle, meaning “one who is sent,” an office entrusted to him by the risen Christ. Though not among the original Twelve, he was personally called after encountering Jesus on the road to Damascus. His ministry carried Christ’s authority and was directed especially toward bringing the gospel to the Gentile world. 1Co 1:1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus… by the will of God, Paul’s apostleship did not arise from personal ambition or human appointment. God set him apart and commissioned him for the work of proclaiming Christ and establishing churches. 2Co 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,… according to the promise of life The message Paul carried centered on the life God promises to those who belong to Christ. This life includes forgiveness, reconciliation with God, resurrection from death, and an eternal inheritance beyond the limits of the present age. Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God,… in Christ Jesus, God’s promised life is found only through union with Christ. Believers share in His death and resurrection and receive a new standing before God as members of His people. Rom 8:2 For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life… To Timothy, my beloved child: Paul writes to Timothy with the affection of a spiritual father for a son. Timothy had served alongside Paul in missionary work and was entrusted with difficult responsibilities in Ephesus, where false teaching threatened the church. The greeting reveals Paul’s confidence in Timothy and the close relationship formed through years of ministry. 1Ti 1:2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy… Grace, mercy, and peace Paul asks God to supply Timothy with grace for service, mercy amid weakness and opposition, and peace in the pressures of ministry. These blessings express God’s sustaining favor, compassionate help, and settled well-being for one called to lead faithfully. 2Jn 1:3 Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father… from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. The blessings come from the Father and from Christ Jesus, who shares divine authority and reigns as Lord. Paul and Timothy stand under the same Lord, bound together in faith and service to Him. 1Co 1:3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father…
Faithfulness under PersecutionPaul opens with gratitude even as he writes from imprisonment, showing confidence in God’s rule over his circumstances and in the advance of the gospel. Php 1:3 I thank my God every time I remember you. whom I serve with a clear conscience His ministry was marked by sincere devotion to God and confidence that he had acted faithfully according to the truth entrusted to him. Act 27:23 For just last night an angel of the God to whom I belong… as did my forefathers, Paul understood his faith in Christ as the fulfillment of the hope held by Israel’s faithful ancestors. The God he served was the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the prophets. Act 24:14 I do confess to you, however, that I worship the God… as I constantly remember you night and day in my prayers. Paul’s affection for Timothy was expressed through regular prayer, especially as Timothy carried responsibility for the churches amid growing opposition and false teaching. 1Th 3:10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you… Recalling your tears, Paul remembers Timothy’s grief at their last separation, likely connected to Paul’s imprisonment or Timothy’s departure from him for ministry. Their relationship was marked by genuine affection, like that of a father and son in the faith, formed through shared service and hardship. 2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress… I long to see you Paul writes from imprisonment in Rome while Timothy serves in Ephesus. Though separated by distance and danger, Paul desires Timothy’s presence for mutual encouragement and to strengthen him for the work ahead. Rom 1:11 For I long to see you so that I may impart… so that I may be filled with joy. Seeing Timothy would bring Paul deep joy because of Timothy’s faithful service and their shared commitment to the gospel. Even under suffering and the prospect of death, Paul’s joy remains tied to the steadfast faith of those he has taught and loved. Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you… I am reminded of your sincere faith, Paul recalls Timothy’s genuine, unhypocritical trust in Christ, a faith evident in his life and ministry. 1Ti 1:5 The goal of our instruction is the love… which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois Timothy’s faith had roots in a godly Jewish home. Lois helped establish a heritage of belief and instruction that shaped her grandson. 2Ti 3:14-15 But as for you, continue in the things you have learned… and your mother Eunice, Eunice continued that influence despite being married to a Greek man. Her faithful witness and teaching helped prepare Timothy for service alongside Paul. Act 16:1 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where he found… and I am convinced is in you as well. Paul affirms that Timothy’s faith is personally his own, not merely inherited. He urges him to stand firm in the same enduring faith displayed by Lois and Eunice. 1Co 4:17 That is why I have sent you Timothy, my beloved… For this reason Paul grounds his appeal in Timothy’s sincere faith, first evident in Lois and Eunice and now active in him. That heritage gave Timothy a firm foundation for the ministry entrusted to him. 2Ti 2:1 You therefore, my child, be strong in the grace… I remind you Timothy knew Paul’s instruction, but the demands and pressures of ministry made renewed encouragement necessary. Paul wrote as a spiritual father urging his trusted coworker to remain faithful in his calling. Rom 15:15 However, I have written you a bold reminder on some points,… to fan into flame Timothy was to cultivate and employ what God had given him rather than allow it to lie dormant. Like a fire requiring attention, spiritual ability must be exercised with diligence. 2Pe 1:13 I think it is right to refresh your memory… the gift of God, God had equipped Timothy for service in the church. The gift was not the result of natural talent or personal achievement, but God’s provision for his ministry. 1Co 12:4 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. which is in you The gift had been given personally to Timothy and remained available to him. He bore responsibility to use it faithfully in the work God had assigned. 1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple…… through the laying on of my hands. Paul had publicly recognized and commissioned Timothy for ministry. The laying on of hands marked God’s calling and the church’s acknowledgment of Timothy’s service. 1Ti 4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you… For God has not given us a spirit of fear, Fear and timidity do not come from God’s work in His people. Paul wrote to Timothy amid growing opposition and suffering, reminding him that the Lord had not called him to shrink back from his duties. Israel’s fear at the edge of the Promised Land showed how unbelief could hinder obedience to God’s command. Rom 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery… but of power, God supplies spiritual strength through the Holy Spirit for faithful service, endurance, and witness. Timothy did not need to rely on natural ability or personal confidence; God equipped him to carry out the ministry entrusted to him. Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes… love, God’s power is governed by self-giving love rather than harshness or self-interest. Such love reflects Christ’s sacrifice and enables believers to serve others faithfully, even when ministry involves hardship or rejection. Rom 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out… and self-control. God also gives sound judgment, discipline, and steadiness. This enables believers to resist fear and temptation, to act wisely, and to remain faithful to God’s will in a hostile world. Gal 5:23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things… So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, Timothy was to remain open and steadfast in proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ—His life, atoning death, and resurrection. In a Roman society increasingly hostile to Christians, public allegiance to Christ could bring rejection, loss, and persecution. Yet the truth of the gospel was not to be hidden because of public pressure or fear. Mrk 8:38 If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous… or of me, His prisoner. Paul’s chains resulted from his service to Christ and his preaching of the gospel. Though held by Roman authorities, he regarded himself as belonging to Christ and subject to His purpose. Timothy was not to withdraw from Paul because association with an imprisoned apostle could bring suspicion and danger. Eph 3:1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus… Instead, join me in suffering for the gospel Faithful ministry could involve hardship, opposition, and personal cost. Paul called Timothy to share in such suffering rather than avoid it, recognizing that loyalty to Christ often placed believers at odds with the world. Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ… by the power of God. Endurance did not depend on human resolve alone. God supplies the strength needed to remain faithful through suffering and to continue bearing witness to the gospel. Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power… He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, God both delivers believers from sin and sets them apart for His service. Salvation begins with His action, and the calling extends to the whole church as a people belonging to Him. Rom 8:30 And those He predestined, He also called;… not because of our works, No human effort, moral achievement, or religious observance can earn salvation. Sinful humanity cannot establish its own righteousness before God. Eph 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith… but by His own purpose God’s saving work proceeds according to His sovereign plan. His purpose in redemption is certain and cannot be overturned by human weakness or opposition. Eph 3:11 according to the eternal purpose… and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus Salvation rests on God’s undeserved favor, made known through the death and resurrection of Christ. In Him, believers receive forgiveness and new life. 1Co 1:4 I always thank my God for you because of the grace… before time began. God’s plan of salvation was established before creation. The security of those He saves rests in His eternal purpose rather than in changing human circumstances. Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God,… And now He has revealed this grace God’s saving purpose, planned before time began, has been made known in history. What was promised through the Scriptures came into clear view in the work of Christ. Tit 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation… through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, Jesus Christ, the Anointed One, entered the world in human flesh as the promised Messiah and Savior. His coming fulfilled God’s plan to rescue sinners and establish His kingdom. Tit 2:13 as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance… who has abolished death By His death and bodily resurrection, Christ broke death’s dominion over His people. Death remains a present reality, but it no longer holds the final victory over those who belong to Him. Heb 2:14-15 Now since the children have flesh and blood,… and illuminated the way to life and immortality Christ made eternal life certain and visible through His resurrection. Believers are promised resurrection, everlasting life, and an incorruptible existence with God. Jhn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.… through the gospel, The gospel, or “good news,” proclaims the accomplished work of Christ—His death for sin and resurrection from the dead—and announces the life He gives to all who believe. Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power… to which I was appointed Paul’s ministry came by God’s calling, not personal ambition or human appointment. The risen Christ set him apart to serve the gospel he once opposed. 1Ti 1:12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me… as a preacher, He publicly proclaimed the good news of Jesus Christ, calling Jews and Gentiles alike to faith in Him. 1Ti 2:7 For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle,… an apostle, Christ personally commissioned Paul to carry His authority and establish churches among the nations. Gal 1:1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man,… and a teacher. Paul also instructed believers in sound doctrine, helping churches understand and live according to the truth of the gospel. Eph 4:11 And it was He who gave some to be apostles… For this reason, Paul connects his present suffering to the gospel ministry entrusted to him. His imprisonment and opposition came because he proclaimed Christ faithfully. Act 20:24 But I consider my life of no value to me… even though I suffer as I do, His hardships included persecution, rejection, and confinement under Roman authority. Such suffering marked the experience of many early Christians who refused to abandon their confession of Christ. Act 9:16 I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.” I am not ashamed; Paul would not regard chains or public disgrace as a reason to retreat. He remained openly identified with the gospel despite the cost. Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power… for I know whom I have believed, His confidence rested in the living Christ whom he had encountered and served, not in human strength or religious tradition. Jhn 6:69 We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.” and I am convinced that He is able God’s power and faithfulness gave Paul assurance that nothing could overturn His purpose. Rom 4:21 being fully persuaded that God was able to do… to guard what I have entrusted to Him Paul placed his life, service, and eternal future in Christ’s keeping. The One who called him would preserve what had been committed to His care. 1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power… for that day. Paul looked ahead to the day of Christ’s return and final judgment, when faithful service would be fully vindicated. 2Ti 4:8 From now on there is laid up for me the crown……
Holding to Sound TeachingTimothy was to preserve the apostolic message as a reliable standard for the church. Christian doctrine was not to be altered by speculation, cultural pressure, or false teachers, but retained in the form Paul had taught. Tit 1:9 He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught… you have heard from me, Paul’s instruction carried apostolic authority and had been personally entrusted to Timothy through close discipleship. Timothy was responsible to preserve and pass on that teaching faithfully. 2Ti 2:2 And the things that you have heard me say… with the faith and love Truth was to be held with faith—trust and belief in the truth of the Gospel—and expressed through Christlike love, the practical outworking of that faith in relationships with others. Sound doctrine was never merely intellectual; it shaped the character and conduct of those who received it. Eph 6:23 Peace to the brothers and love with faith… that are in Christ Jesus. Faith and love arise from union with Christ, who is the center of the gospel and the source of spiritual life. His work and authority define the message Timothy was to guard. 1Ti 1:14 And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me… Guard the treasure entrusted to you, Timothy was charged with preserving the apostolic gospel against false teaching and alteration. The treasure was the true message of Christ, received from Paul and to be faithfully passed on to others. 1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you.… with the help of the Holy Spirit Faithful ministry required more than Timothy’s own resolve. The Spirit supplied wisdom, courage, discernment, and strength to uphold the truth amid opposition. Rom 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness… who dwells in us. God’s Spirit lived within Timothy and the whole body of believers, marking them as God’s people and enabling them to remain faithful to the gospel entrusted to them. Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,… You know that everyone in the Province of Asia has deserted me, Paul recalls the widespread abandonment of those connected with Asia, the Roman province centered on Ephesus, where he had ministered for years and where Timothy served. Paul’s imprisonment made open association with him dangerous, and many who had once known his ministry withdrew from him. 2Ti 4:16 At my first defense, no one stood with me,… including Phygelus and Hermogenes. Paul names these men because Timothy knew them and would recognize the seriousness of their actions. Nothing else is recorded about them, but their desertion stands as a lasting record of unfaithfulness during Paul’s time of suffering. 2Ti 4:10 because Demas, in his love of this world, has deserted me… May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, Onesiphorus had shown devoted care for Paul, and Paul asks that the Lord’s mercy rest upon his family as well. His household likely shared in the cost and commitment of supporting Paul during a time when association with an imprisoned Christian could bring suspicion and hardship. 2Sa 9:1-7 Then David asked, “Is there anyone left from the house… because he has often refreshed me Onesiphorus repeatedly strengthened Paul through practical help, personal presence, and encouragement. While Paul endured confinement and uncertainty, this faithful support relieved his isolation and demonstrated the care believers owed one another. 1Co 16:18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well.… and was unashamed of my chains. Paul’s imprisonment did not cause Onesiphorus to withdraw or conceal his connection with him. Though Paul’s chains carried public disgrace in the eyes of Roman society, Onesiphorus remained loyal to Christ’s servant and openly identified with him. Col 4:18 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. Remember my chains.… Indeed, when he arrived in Rome, Onesiphorus entered the imperial capital while Paul was imprisoned there, a setting where association with a Christian prisoner could bring suspicion and danger. Act 28:14-16 There we found some brothers who invited us… he searched diligently Rather than avoiding Paul’s circumstances, he made a determined effort to locate him. Luk 15:8 Or what woman who has ten silver coins… until he found me. His successful search showed loyal friendship and provided practical encouragement to Paul during his confinement. Luk 15:4-5 What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep… May the Lord grant Onesiphorus His mercy on that day. Paul prays that Onesiphorus will receive the Lord’s mercy at the final day of judgment and reward. Onesiphorus had served Paul faithfully despite the danger of being associated with an imprisoned apostle. Since Paul speaks of him in the past tense and sends greetings to his household rather than to him personally, he may have already died. Paul commends his steadfast service and entrusts his eternal outcome to the Lord’s mercy. Jud 1:21 keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy… You know very well how much he ministered to me in Ephesus. Onesiphorus had also served Paul during his ministry in Ephesus, a leading city of Asia Minor and an important center of the early church. Timothy knew the extent of this service, which likely included practical support, hospitality, and assistance in ministry. Onesiphorus’s example shows the courage and loyalty of believers who strengthened the work of the gospel during times of opposition. Act 19:8-10 Then Paul went into the synagogue and spoke boldly… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
