Εἴ τις οὖν παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ εἴ τι παραμύθιον ἀγάπης εἴ τις κοινωνία Πνεύματος εἴ τις σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί Therefore if you have any encouragement in Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, If [there be] therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
πληρώσατέ μου τὴν χαρὰν ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε τὴν αὐτὴν ἀγάπην ἔχοντες σύμψυχοι τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being united in spirit and purpose. Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, [being] of one accord, of one mind.
μηδὲν κατ’ ἐριθείαν μηδὲ κατὰ κενοδοξίαν ἀλλὰ τῇ ταπεινοφροσύνῃ ἀλλήλους ἡγούμενοι ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. [Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
μὴ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἕκαστοι σκοποῦντες ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ἑτέρων ἕκαστοι Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: <1063> Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Ὃς ἐν μορφῇ Θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα Θεῷ Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν μορφὴν δούλου λαβών ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Διὸ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;
καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι ΚΥΡΙΟΣ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρός and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Ὥστε ἀγαπητοί μου καθὼς πάντοτε ὑπηκούσατε μὴ ὡς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ μου μόνον ἀλλὰ νῦν πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐν τῇ ἀπουσίᾳ μου μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Θεὸς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ τὸ θέλειν καὶ τὸ ἐνεργεῖν ὑπὲρ τῆς εὐδοκίας For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure.
Πάντα ποιεῖτε χωρὶς γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν Do everything without complaining or arguing, Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
ἵνα γένησθε ἄμεμπτοι καὶ ἀκέραιοι τέκνα Θεοῦ ἄμωμα μέσον γενεᾶς σκολιᾶς καὶ διεστραμμένης ἐν οἷς φαίνεσθε ὡς φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
λόγον ζωῆς ἐπέχοντες εἰς καύχημα ἐμοὶ εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ ὅτι οὐκ εἰς κενὸν ἔδραμον οὐδὲ εἰς κενὸν ἐκοπίασα as you hold forth the word of life, in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
Ἀλλὰ εἰ καὶ σπένδομαι ἐπὶ τῇ θυσίᾳ καὶ λειτουργίᾳ τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν χαίρω καὶ συνχαίρω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
τὸ δὲ αὐτὸ καὶ ὑμεῖς χαίρετε καὶ συνχαίρετέ μοι So you too should be glad and rejoice with me. For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
Ἐλπίζω δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ Ἰησοῦ Τιμόθεον ταχέως πέμψαι ὑμῖν ἵνα κἀγὼ εὐψυχῶ γνοὺς τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I learn how you are doing. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
οὐδένα γὰρ ἔχω ἰσόψυχον ὅστις γνησίως τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν μεριμνήσει I have nobody else like him who will genuinely care for your needs. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
οἱ πάντες γὰρ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ζητοῦσιν οὐ τὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ For all the others look after their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.
τὴν δὲ δοκιμὴν αὐτοῦ γινώσκετε ὅτι ὡς πατρὶ τέκνον σὺν ἐμοὶ ἐδούλευσεν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον But you know Timothy’s proven worth, that as a child with his father he has served with me to advance the gospel. But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
Τοῦτον μὲν οὖν ἐλπίζω πέμψαι ὡς ἂν ἀφίδω τὰ περὶ ἐμὲ ἐξαυτῆς So I hope to send him as soon as I see what happens with me. Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
πέποιθα δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ ὅτι καὶ αὐτὸς ταχέως ἐλεύσομαι And I trust in the Lord that I myself will come soon. But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.
Ἀναγκαῖον δὲ ἡγησάμην Ἐπαφρόδιτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν καὶ συνεργὸν καὶ συστρατιώτην μου ὑμῶν δὲ ἀπόστολον καὶ λειτουργὸν τῆς χρείας μου πέμψαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς But I thought it necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my needs. Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
ἐπειδὴ ἐπιποθῶν ἦν πάντας ὑμᾶς (ἰδεῖν) καὶ ἀδημονῶν διότι ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἠσθένησεν For he has been longing for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
καὶ γὰρ ἠσθένησεν παραπλήσιον θανάτῳ ἀλλὰ ὁ Θεὸς ἠλέησεν αὐτόν οὐκ αὐτὸν δὲ μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐμέ ἵνα μὴ λύπην ἐπὶ λύπην σχῶ He was sick indeed, nearly unto death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
Σπουδαιοτέρως οὖν ἔπεμψα αὐτὸν ἵνα ἰδόντες αὐτὸν πάλιν χαρῆτε κἀγὼ ἀλυπότερος ὦ Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less anxious. I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
προσδέχεσθε οὖν αὐτὸν ἐν Κυρίῳ μετὰ πάσης χαρᾶς καὶ τοὺς τοιούτους ἐντίμους ἔχετε Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:
ὅτι διὰ τὸ ἔργον Χριστοῦ μέχρι θανάτου ἤγγισεν παραβολευσάμενος τῇ ψυχῇ ἵνα ἀναπληρώσῃ τὸ ὑμῶν ὑστέρημα τῆς πρός με λειτουργίας because he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for your deficit of service to me. Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
