Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν διδάσκοντος αὐτοῦ τὸν λαὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ εὐαγγελιζομένου ἐπέστησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς σὺν τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him.
καὶ εἶπαν λέγοντες πρὸς αὐτόν Εἰπὸν ἡμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς τίς ἐστιν δούς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”
Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ λόγον καὶ εἴπατέ μοι He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me:
Τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?” John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
Οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἐὰν εἴπωμεν Ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐρεῖ Διὰ τί οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’
ἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν Ἐξ ἀνθρώπων λαὸς ἅπας καταλιθάσει ἡμᾶς πεπεισμένος γάρ ἐστιν Ἰωάννην προφήτην εἶναι But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
Καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν μὴ εἰδέναι πόθεν So they answered that they did not know where it came from. So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
Καὶ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
Ἤρξατο δὲ πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγειν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην Ἄνθρωπος [τις] ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ἐξέδετο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν χρόνους ἱκανούς And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.
καὶ καιρῷ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς δοῦλον ἵνα ἀπὸ τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος δώσουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὸν δείραντες κενόν When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
Καὶ προσέθετο ἕτερον πέμψαι δοῦλον οἱ δὲ κἀκεῖνον δείραντες καὶ ἀτιμάσαντες ἐξαπέστειλαν κενόν And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.
Καὶ προσέθετο τρίτον πέμψαι οἱ δὲ καὶ τοῦτον τραυματίσαντες ἐξέβαλον And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
Εἶπεν δὲ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος Τί ποιήσω πέμψω τὸν υἱόν μου τὸν ἀγαπητόν ἴσως τοῦτον ἐντραπήσονται Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’
Ἰδόντες δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ γεωργοὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες Οὗτός ἐστιν κληρονόμος ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτόν ἵνα ἡμῶν γένηται κληρονομία But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’ “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
καὶ ἐκβαλόντες αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ἀπέκτειναν Τί οὖν ποιήσει αὐτοῖς κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. “What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
ἐλεύσεται καὶ ἀπολέσει τοὺς γεωργοὺς τούτους καὶ δώσει τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἄλλοις Ἀκούσαντες δὲ εἶπαν Μὴ γένοιτο He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς εἶπεν Τί οὖν ἐστιν τὸ γεγραμμένον τοῦτο Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες Οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’? Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: “’The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?
Πᾶς πεσὼν ἐπ’ ἐκεῖνον τὸν λίθον συνθλασθήσεται ἐφ’ ὃν δ’ ἂν πέσῃ λικμήσει αὐτόν Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”
Καὶ ἐζήτησαν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐπιβαλεῖν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν λαόν ἔγνωσαν γὰρ ὅτι πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἶπεν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people. The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.
Καὶ παρατηρήσαντες ἀπέστειλαν ἐνκαθέτους ὑποκρινομένους ἑαυτοὺς δικαίους εἶναι ἵνα ἐπιλάβωνται αὐτοῦ λόγου ὥστε παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν τῇ ἀρχῇ καὶ τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ τοῦ ἡγεμόνος So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.
καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε οἴδαμεν ὅτι ὀρθῶς λέγεις καὶ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ λαμβάνεις πρόσωπον ἀλλ’ ἐπ’ ἀληθείας τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ διδάσκεις So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
ἔξεστιν ἡμᾶς Καίσαρι φόρον δοῦναι οὔ Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
Κατανοήσας δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πανουργίαν εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, He saw through their duplicity and said to them,
Δείξατέ μοι δηνάριον τίνος ἔχει εἰκόνα καὶ ἐπιγραφήν Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Καίσαρος “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.
δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τοίνυν ἀπόδοτε τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τῷ Θεῷ He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
Καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν ἐπιλαβέσθαι αὐτοῦ ῥήματος ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ θαυμάσαντες ἐπὶ τῇ ἀποκρίσει αὐτοῦ ἐσίγησαν And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent. They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
Προσελθόντες δέ τινες τῶν Σαδδουκαίων οἱ ἀντιλέγοντες ἀνάστασιν μὴ εἶναι ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.
λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε Μωϋσῆς ἔγραψεν ἡμῖν ἐάν τινος ἀδελφὸς ἀποθάνῃ ἔχων γυναῖκα καὶ οὗτος ἄτεκνος ἵνα λάβῃ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ ἐξαναστήσῃ σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
ἑπτὰ οὖν ἀδελφοὶ ἦσαν καὶ πρῶτος λαβὼν γυναῖκα ἀπέθανεν ἄτεκνος Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.
καὶ δεύτερος ⧼τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ οὗτος ἀπέθανεν ἄτεκνος⧽ And the second The second
καὶ τρίτος ἔλαβεν αὐτήν ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ οὐ κατέλιπον τέκνα καὶ ἀπέθανον and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children.
ὕστερον καὶ γυνὴ ἀπέθανεν Afterward the woman also died. Finally, the woman died too.
γυνὴ οὖν ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει τίνος αὐτῶν γίνεται γυνή οἱ γὰρ ἑπτὰ ἔσχον αὐτὴν γυναῖκα In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.” Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου γαμοῦσιν καὶ γαμίσκονται And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
οἱ δὲ καταξιωθέντες τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐκείνου τυχεῖν καὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῆς ἐκ νεκρῶν οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,
οὐδὲ γὰρ ἀποθανεῖν ἔτι δύνανται ἰσάγγελοι γάρ εἰσιν καὶ υἱοί εἰσιν Θεοῦ τῆς ἀναστάσεως υἱοὶ ὄντες for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.
Ὅτι δὲ ἐγείρονται οἱ νεκροὶ καὶ Μωϋσῆς ἐμήνυσεν ἐπὶ τῆς Βάτου ὡς λέγει Κύριον Τὸν Θεὸν Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Θεὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Θεὸν Ἰακώβ But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’
Θεὸς δὲ οὐκ ἔστιν νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων πάντες γὰρ αὐτῷ ζῶσιν Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
Ἀποκριθέντες δέ τινες τῶν γραμματέων εἶπαν Διδάσκαλε καλῶς εἶπας Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!”
οὐκέτι γὰρ ἐτόλμων ἐπερωτᾶν αὐτὸν οὐδέν For they no longer dared to ask him any question. And no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς Πῶς λέγουσιν τὸν Χριστὸν εἶναι Δαυὶδ υἱόν But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son? Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?
αὐτὸς γὰρ Δαυὶδ λέγει ἐν βίβλῳ ψαλμῶν Εἶπεν Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: “’The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
Ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου Ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.|’
Δαυὶδ οὖν αὐτὸν Κύριον καλεῖ καὶ πῶς αὐτοῦ υἱός ἐστιν David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?” David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Ἀκούοντος δὲ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς [αὐτοῦ] And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,
Προσέχετε ἀπὸ τῶν γραμματέων τῶν θελόντων περιπατεῖν ἐν στολαῖς καὶ φιλούντων ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς καὶ πρωτοκαθεδρίας ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ πρωτοκλισίας ἐν τοῖς δείπνοις “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
οἳ κατεσθίουσιν τὰς οἰκίας τῶν χηρῶν καὶ προφάσει μακρὰ προσεύχονται οὗτοι λήμψονται περισσότερον κρίμα who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
