1 Ἀναβλέψας δὲ εἶδεν τοὺς βάλλοντας εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον τὰ δῶρα αὐτῶν πλουσίους Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
2 εἶδεν δέ τινα χήραν πενιχρὰν βάλλουσαν ἐκεῖ λεπτὰ δύο and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.
3 Καὶ εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἡ χήρα αὕτη «ἡ πτωχὴ» πλεῖον πάντων ἔβαλεν And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
4 πάντες γὰρ οὗτοι ἐκ τοῦ περισσεύοντος αὐτοῖς ἔβαλον εἰς τὰ δῶρα αὕτη δὲ ἐκ τοῦ ὑστερήματος αὐτῆς πάντα τὸν βίον ὃν εἶχεν ἔβαλεν For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
5 Καί τινων λεγόντων περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ὅτι λίθοις καλοῖς καὶ ἀναθήμασιν κεκόσμηται εἶπεν And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,
6 Ταῦτα ἃ θεωρεῖτε ἐλεύσονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται λίθος ἐπὶ λίθῳ (ὧδε) ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”
7 Ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
8 Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Βλέπετε μὴ πλανηθῆτε πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου λέγοντες Ἐγώ εἰμι καί Ὁ καιρὸς ἤγγικεν μὴ πορευθῆτε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.
9 ὅταν δὲ ἀκούσητε πολέμους καὶ ἀκαταστασίας μὴ πτοηθῆτε δεῖ γὰρ ταῦτα γενέσθαι πρῶτον ἀλλ’ οὐκ εὐθέως τὸ τέλος And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.” When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
10 Τότε ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγερθήσεται ἔθνος ἐπ’ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
11 σεισμοί τε μεγάλοι καὶ κατὰ τόπους λιμοὶ* καὶ λοιμοὶ* ἔσονται φόβητρά τε καὶ «ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ» σημεῖα μεγάλα ἔσται There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
12 Πρὸ δὲ τούτων πάντων ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν καὶ διώξουσιν παραδιδόντες εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ φυλακάς ἀπαγομένους ἐπὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ ἡγεμόνας ἕνεκεν τοῦ ὀνόματός μου But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.
13 ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον This will be your opportunity to bear witness. And so you will bear testimony to me.
14 θέτε οὖν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν μὴ προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.
15 ἐγὼ γὰρ δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καὶ σοφίαν ᾗ οὐ δυνήσονται ἀντιστῆναι ἢ ἀντειπεῖν ἅπαντες οἱ ἀντικείμενοι ὑμῖν for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
16 Παραδοθήσεσθε δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ γονέων καὶ ἀδελφῶν καὶ συγγενῶν καὶ φίλων καὶ θανατώσουσιν ἐξ ὑμῶν You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
17 καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. Everyone will hate you because of me.
18 καὶ θρὶξ ἐκ τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν οὐ μὴ ἀπόληται But not a hair of your head will perish. But not a hair of your head will perish.
19 ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσασθε* τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν By your endurance you will gain your lives. Stand firm, and you will win life.
20 Ὅταν δὲ ἴδητε κυκλουμένην ὑπὸ στρατοπέδων Ἰερουσαλήμ τότε γνῶτε ὅτι ἤγγικεν ἡ ἐρήμωσις αὐτῆς “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.
21 τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη καὶ οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.
22 ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν τοῦ πλησθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.
23 Οὐαὶ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἔσται γὰρ ἀνάγκη μεγάλη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὀργὴ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.
24 καὶ πεσοῦνται στόματι μαχαίρης καὶ αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται εἰς τὰ ἔθνη πάντα καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν ἄχρι οὗ πληρωθῶσιν (καὶ ἔσονται) καιροὶ ἐθνῶν They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
25 Καὶ ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ καὶ ἄστροις καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
26 ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ αἱ γὰρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
27 καὶ τότε ὄψονται τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν νεφέλῃ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
28 ἀρχομένων δὲ τούτων γίνεσθαι ἀνακύψατε καὶ ἐπάρατε τὰς κεφαλὰς ὑμῶν διότι ἐγγίζει ἡ ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶν Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
29 Καὶ εἶπεν παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς Ἴδετε τὴν συκῆν καὶ πάντα τὰ δένδρα And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
30 ὅταν προβάλωσιν ἤδη βλέποντες ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε ὅτι ἤδη ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος ἐστίν As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.
31 οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα γινόμενα γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
32 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ ἡ γενεὰ αὕτη ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
33 ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ παρελεύσονται οἱ δὲ λόγοι μου οὐ μὴ παρελεύσονται Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
34 Προσέχετε δὲ ἑαυτοῖς μή‿ ποτε βαρηθῶσιν ὑμῶν αἱ καρδίαι ἐν κραιπάλῃ καὶ μέθῃ καὶ μερίμναις βιωτικαῖς καὶ ἐπιστῇ ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς αἰφνίδιος ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνη ὡς παγίς “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.
35 ἐπεισελεύσεται γὰρ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.
36 ἀγρυπνεῖτε δὲ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ δεόμενοι ἵνα κατισχύσητε ἐκφυγεῖν ταῦτα πάντα τὰ μέλλοντα γίνεσθαι καὶ σταθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
37 Ἦν δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων τὰς δὲ νύκτας ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,
38 καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὤρθριζεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him. and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
