1 Καὶ εἰσελθὼν διήρχετο τὴν Ἰεριχώ He entered Jericho and was passing through. Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
2 Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι καλούμενος Ζακχαῖος καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἀρχιτελώνης καὶ αὐτὸς πλούσιος And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.
3 καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν τίς ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ὅτι τῇ ἡλικίᾳ μικρὸς ἦν And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd.
4 καὶ προδραμὼν εἰς τὸ ἔμπροσθεν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ συκομορέαν ἵνα ἴδῃ αὐτόν ὅτι ἐκείνης ἤμελλεν διέρχεσθαι So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 Καὶ ὡς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον ἀναβλέψας ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Ζακχαῖε σπεύσας κατάβηθι σήμερον γὰρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου δεῖ με μεῖναι And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
6 Καὶ σπεύσας κατέβη καὶ ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν χαίρων So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 καὶ ἰδόντες πάντες διεγόγγυζον λέγοντες ὅτι Παρὰ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἀνδρὶ εἰσῆλθεν καταλῦσαι And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
8 Σταθεὶς δὲ Ζακχαῖος εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Κύριον Ἰδοὺ τὰ ἡμίσιά* μου τῶν ὑπαρχόντων Κύριε τοῖς πτωχοῖς δίδωμι καὶ εἴ τινός τι ἐσυκοφάντησα ἀποδίδωμι τετραπλοῦν And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Σήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετο καθότι καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
10 ἦλθεν γὰρ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλός For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
11 Ἀκουόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ταῦτα προσθεὶς εἶπεν παραβολὴν διὰ τὸ ἐγγὺς εἶναι Ἰερουσαλὴμ αὐτὸν καὶ δοκεῖν αὐτοὺς ὅτι παραχρῆμα μέλλει ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναφαίνεσθαι As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
12 εἶπεν οὖν Ἄνθρωπός τις εὐγενὴς ἐπορεύθη εἰς χώραν μακρὰν λαβεῖν ἑαυτῷ βασιλείαν καὶ ὑποστρέψαι He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.
13 καλέσας δὲ δέκα δούλους ἑαυτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δέκα μνᾶς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Πραγματεύσασθε ἐν ᾧ ἔρχομαι Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
14 Οἱ δὲ πολῖται αὐτοῦ ἐμίσουν αὐτόν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πρεσβείαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Οὐ θέλομεν τοῦτον βασιλεῦσαι ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
15 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐπανελθεῖν αὐτὸν λαβόντα τὴν βασιλείαν καὶ εἶπεν φωνηθῆναι αὐτῷ τοὺς δούλους τούτους οἷς δεδώκει τὸ ἀργύριον ἵνα γνοῖ 〈τίς〉 τί διεπραγματεύσαντο When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16 Παρεγένετο δὲ ὁ πρῶτος λέγων Κύριε ἡ μνᾶ σου δέκα προσηργάσατο μνᾶς The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
17 Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εὖγε ἀγαθὲ δοῦλε ὅτι ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ πιστὸς ἐγένου ἴσθι ἐξουσίαν ἔχων ἐπάνω δέκα πόλεων And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ “’Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
18 Καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ δεύτερος λέγων Ἡ μνᾶ σου κύριε ἐποίησεν πέντε μνᾶς And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19 Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ τούτῳ Καὶ σὺ ἐπάνω γίνου πέντε πόλεων And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
20 Καὶ ὁ ἕτερος ἦλθεν λέγων Κύριε ἰδοὺ ἡ μνᾶ σου ἣν εἶχον ἀποκειμένην ἐν σουδαρίῳ Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.
21 ἐφοβούμην γάρ σε ὅτι ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρὸς εἶ αἴρεις ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκας καὶ θερίζεις ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρας for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’
22 Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἐκ τοῦ στόματός σου κρίνω σε πονηρὲ δοῦλε ᾔδεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρός εἰμι αἴρων ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκα καὶ θερίζων ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρα He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
23 καὶ διὰ τί οὐκ ἔδωκάς μου τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπὶ τράπεζαν κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν σὺν τόκῳ ἂν αὐτὸ ἔπραξα Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
24 Καὶ τοῖς παρεστῶσιν εἶπεν Ἄρατε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὴν μνᾶν καὶ δότε τῷ τὰς δέκα μνᾶς ἔχοντι And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔχει δέκα μνᾶς And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ “’Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
26 Λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι παντὶ τῷ ἔχοντι δοθήσεται ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.
27 πλὴν τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου τούτους τοὺς μὴ θελήσαντάς με βασιλεῦσαι ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἀγάγετε ὧδε καὶ κατασφάξατε αὐτοὺς ἔμπροσθέν μου But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’” But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
28 Καὶ εἰπὼν ταῦτα ἐπορεύετο ἔμπροσθεν ἀναβαίνων εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤγγισεν εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν ἀπέστειλεν δύο τῶν μαθητῶν When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,
30 λέγων Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κατέναντι κώμην ἐν ᾗ εἰσπορευόμενοι εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον ἐφ’ ὃν οὐδεὶς πώποτε ἀνθρώπων ἐκάθισεν καὶ λύσαντες αὐτὸν ἀγάγετε saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
31 καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμᾶς ἐρωτᾷ Διὰ τί λύετε οὕτως ἐρεῖτε Ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Ἀπελθόντες δὲ οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.
33 λυόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν πῶλον εἶπαν οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς Τί λύετε τὸν πῶλον And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 Καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπιρίψαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐπὶ τὸν πῶλον ἐπεβίβασαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
36 Πορευομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ὑπεστρώννυον τὰ ἱμάτια ἑαυτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
37 ἐγγίζοντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἤδη πρὸς τῇ καταβάσει τοῦ ὄρους τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἤρξαντο ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν χαίροντες αἰνεῖν τὸν Θεὸν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ περὶ πασῶν ὧν εἶδον δυνάμεων As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 λέγοντες Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ὁ Βασιλεὺς ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Ἐν οὐρανῷ εἰρήνη καὶ δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Καί τινες τῶν Φαρισαίων ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Διδάσκαλε ἐπιτίμησον τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Λέγω ὑμῖν ‹ὅτι› ἐὰν οὗτοι σιωπήσουσιν οἱ λίθοι κράξουσιν He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
41 Καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
42 λέγων ὅτι Εἰ ἔγνως ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ καὶ σὺ τὰ πρὸς εἰρήνην νῦν δὲ ἀπὸ ὀφθαλμῶν σου saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.
43 ὅτι ἥξουσιν ἡμέραι ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ παρεμβαλοῦσιν οἱ ἐχθροί σου χάρακά σοι καὶ περικυκλώσουσίν σε καὶ συνέξουσίν σε πάντοθεν For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.
44 καὶ ἐδαφιοῦσίν σε καὶ τὰ τέκνα σου ἐν σοί καὶ οὐκ ἀφήσουσιν λίθον ἐπὶ λίθον ἐν σοί ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἔγνως τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς σου and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
45 Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling.
46 λέγων αὐτοῖς Γέγραπται Καὶ ἔσται ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε Σπήλαιον λῃστῶν saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” “It is written,” he said to them, “’My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
47 Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἀπολέσαι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τοῦ λαοῦ And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.
48 καὶ οὐχ εὕρισκον τὸ τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαὸς γὰρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο* αὐτοῦ ἀκούων but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
