Galatians 1
Berean Study Bible

Paul’s Greeting to the Galatians

Paul, an apostle—

Paul begins by identifying himself as an apostle, meaning “one who is sent” or “messenger,” commissioned to represent Christ and proclaim His gospel. Though not among the Twelve during Jesus’ earthly ministry, Paul was personally called by the risen Lord and entrusted with a mission to the Gentiles.

Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle,…

sent not from men nor by man,

His office did not come through human appointment, religious tradition, or the approval of church leaders. Those challenging Paul’s authority in Galatia could not dismiss him as a self-appointed teacher or a representative of any human institution.

Act 26:16-18 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared…

but by Jesus Christ and God the Father,

Paul’s commission came directly from the Son and the Father. His gospel, authority, and mission rested on God’s purpose rather than human recognition.

Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”…
Jhn 17:18 As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them…
Mat 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven…

who raised Him from the dead—

The Father’s raising of Jesus confirms Christ’s victory over death and His authority as the risen Lord. Paul’s apostleship began in light of the resurrection, which stands at the center of the gospel he preached.

and all the brothers with me,

Paul writes in fellowship with other believers who shared in his ministry and affirmed the gospel he preached. Their presence reflects the unity of the early Christian mission and the close bond among those serving Christ.

To the churches of Galatia:

Galatia included several congregations in Asia Minor, likely founded through Paul’s missionary work. These churches faced pressure from teachers who required Gentile believers to follow the Jewish law, prompting Paul to defend the gospel of salvation through faith in Christ alone.

Grace and peace to you

Paul opens with the blessings of God’s favor and the peace secured through salvation. Grace is given freely, not earned, and peace includes reconciliation with God and the settled assurance that follows.

Rom 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints…
1Co 1:3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father…
2Co 1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father…

from God our Father

God receives believers as His children through Christ. “Our” joins the Galatian churches in one family under the Father’s care, authority, and provision.

Col 1:2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:…

and the Lord Jesus Christ,

Jesus, whose name means “Yahweh is salvation,” is the risen Lord and promised Messiah, the Anointed One, fully sharing divine authority. Grace and peace come from Him together with the Father, affirming His central place in the salvation and life of the church.

2Th 2:16-17 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,…
1Ti 1:2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy…

who gave Himself for our sins

Jesus willingly offered His life as the sacrifice for sin, bearing the judgment sinners deserved. His death fulfilled the Old Testament pattern of sacrifice and the promise of the suffering servant who would bear the sins of many. His self-giving was voluntary, expressing both obedience to the Father and love for those He came to save.

Tit 2:14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness…
1Ti 2:5-6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator…
1Pe 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree…

to rescue us from the present evil age,

Christ’s death delivers believers not only from sin’s guilt but also from the dominion of a world order marked by rebellion against God. Though evil remains active, His saving work brings His people into the life and hope of God’s coming kingdom.

Act 26:18 open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness…
2Co 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers,…

according to the will of our God and Father,

The cross was the fulfillment of God’s redemptive purpose, not an unforeseen tragedy. God the Father planned salvation through His Son and acted in love to bring sinners into relationship with Himself.

Glory belongs to God alone as the sovereign Creator and Redeemer. Paul responds to the gospel he has summarized with praise, recognizing that salvation originates in God’s mercy and is carried out for His honor.

Rom 16:27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ!…
Eph 3:21 To him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus…

No Other Gospel

I am amazed

Paul opens with shocked concern over how rapidly the Galatian churches have departed from the gospel he preached. His response reveals the gravity of their situation and his care for believers endangered by false teaching.

Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?…
2Co 11:3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived…
Mrk 6:6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around…

how quickly you are deserting

The Galatians had begun abandoning the message they first received, apparently under the influence of teachers who added circumcision and observance of the Jewish law as requirements for acceptance with God. Their change was not a minor disagreement but a departure from the basis of salvation.

Exo 32:8 How quickly they have turned aside from the way…
Deu 9:16 And I saw how you had sinned against the LORD your God;…
Heb 3:12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart…

the One who called you

By turning from the gospel, they were turning from God Himself, who had graciously called them into salvation. Their standing with God began with His initiative, not their own religious performance.

1Th 5:24 The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.
2Th 2:14 He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in…
1Co 1:9 God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son…

by the grace of Christ

Christ’s grace provides salvation apart from works of the law. The teaching troubling Galatia diminished the sufficiency of Christ’s death by making law-keeping necessary for justification.

2Th 3:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.
Act 15:11 On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace…
2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God…

and are turning to a different gospel—

What was being presented as an improved form of Christianity was not the gospel at all. Any message that adds human works to faith in Christ changes the good news and denies the completeness of His saving work.

2Co 11:4 For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus…
1Ti 1:3-7 As I urged you on my departure to Macedonia,…
2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers…

which is not even a gospel.

The message promoted among the Galatians was not gospel—good news—at all because it added obedience to the Mosaic law as a condition of salvation. By requiring circumcision and other Jewish practices, the false teachers denied that Christ’s death and resurrection are fully sufficient to save sinners.

2Co 11:4 For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus…
2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers…
1Ti 6:3-5 If anyone teaches another doctrine and disagrees with…

Evidently some people are troubling you

These teachers had entered the Galatian churches and unsettled Gentile believers by questioning the completeness of their faith in Christ. Their teaching created confusion and division by placing believers again under obligations Christ had fulfilled.

Act 15:24 It has come to our attention that some went out from us…
Gal 5:10 I am confident in the Lord that you will…
Act 15:1-2 Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching…

and trying to distort the gospel of Christ.

The gospel is distorted whenever human works are added to faith as a basis for acceptance with God. Paul treats this as a serious corruption because it changes the message of salvation from Christ’s finished work to human effort.

Act 15:5 But some believers from the party of the Pharisees stood up…
Act 20:30 Even from your own number, men will rise up…
Jud 1:4 For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—…

But even if we or an angel from heaven

Paul places every messenger, including himself, the other apostles, and even an angelic being, under the authority of the gospel already delivered. No position, reputation, or claimed revelation can supersede God’s revealed message.

Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you…
2Co 11:14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades…
2Th 2:9-10 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied…

should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you,

The Galatian churches were being drawn toward a message that added obedience to the Mosaic law as a requirement for salvation. Paul insists that the gospel of Christ’s death and resurrection, received by faith, cannot be revised or supplemented.

2Co 11:4 For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus…
2Pe 2:1 Now there were also false prophets among the people…
2Jn 1:9-10 Anyone who runs ahead without remaining in the teaching…

let him be under a curse!

Anyone who deliberately proclaims a different gospel stands under God’s judgment, set apart for destruction. The severity of Paul’s warning reflects the destructive consequences of replacing the grace of Christ with a false message.

1Co 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a curse…
Deu 27:26 Cursed is he who does not put the words of this law…
Gal 3:10 All who rely on works of the law are under a curse.…

As we have said before, so now I say again:

Paul repeats the warning because the churches in Galatia were facing a serious departure from the message they had first received. Teachers were persuading Gentile believers that faith in Christ was insufficient without submission to the Mosaic law.

2Co 13:2 I already warned you the second time I was with you.…
Php 3:1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.…
2Pe 1:12-13 Therefore I will always remind you of these things…

If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received,

The Galatians had received the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ, grounded in His death and resurrection. No teacher, whether an outsider, a respected leader, or someone within the churches, had authority to alter that message by adding human requirements for acceptance with God.

2Co 11:4 For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus…
1Co 15:1-2 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel…
Act 20:30 Even from your own number, men will rise up…

let him be under a curse!

Paul declares that anyone who corrupts the gospel stands under God’s judgment. Altering the message of Christ does not produce another valid form of Christianity; it rejects the truth God has revealed.

1Co 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a curse…
Deu 27:26 Cursed is he who does not put the words of this law…
Rev 22:18-19 I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy…

Paul Preaches the Gospel

Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God?

Paul defended the gospel he preached against those who wanted Gentile believers to adopt Jewish customs as necessary for salvation. His concern was not acceptance from religious leaders or public opinion, but faithfulness to the message Christ had entrusted to him. The dispute later addressed at the Jerusalem Council showed how seriously the early church had to guard the gospel from human additions.

1Th 2:4 Instead, we speak as those approved by God…
Jhn 5:44 How can you believe if you accept glory from one another…

Or am I striving to please men?

Public honor and approval carried great weight in the Roman world, yet Paul’s ministry brought opposition, suffering, and rejection rather than status. His willingness to endure these hardships showed that he was not adjusting his message to gain favor.

Eph 6:6 And do this not only to please them while they are watching,…
Col 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being,…

If I were still trying to please men,

Before meeting Christ, Paul had pursued distinction within Judaism and zealously opposed the church. His conversion changed both his allegiance and his purpose. The word “still” points to a former way of life that he had left behind.

1Th 2:6 Nor did we seek praise from you or from anyone else…
Rom 15:3 For even Christ did not please Himself…

I would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul belonged to Christ and was bound to carry out His will. Serving Christ required loyalty to the gospel even when it brought conflict with respected leaders, former associates, and the surrounding culture.

1Co 7:22-23 For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord…
Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle,…

For I want you to know, brothers,

Paul addresses the Galatian believers with pastoral urgency, calling them to recognize the seriousness of his defense. Though he must correct them, he still regards them as fellow members of God’s family.

Rom 1:13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers……
1Co 12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want…
1Th 4:13 Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed…

that the gospel I preached

The message Paul proclaimed was the good news of salvation through the crucified and risen Jesus Christ. His authority did not rest on personal influence or religious training, but on his commission to announce Christ to the nations.

1Co 15:1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel…
2Co 11:7 Was it a sin for me to humble myself in order…
Rom 16:25 Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel…

was not devised by man.

Paul denies that his gospel came from human tradition, speculation, or the approval of religious leaders. In contrast to the teaching troubling the Galatian churches, the gospel he received was God’s revealed message and could not be altered by human additions.

1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…
2Pe 1:20-21 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture…
1Co 2:13 And this is what we speak, not in words…

I did not receive it from any man,

Paul’s gospel did not originate in Jerusalem, from the other apostles, or from any human religious tradition. Those challenging his authority could not dismiss his message as borrowed or secondhand.

1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:…
1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…
Mat 16:17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah!…

nor was I taught it;

Though trained as a Pharisee under Gamaliel, Paul had not learned the gospel through the customary instruction of a rabbi and disciple. His former education could not account for the message he now proclaimed.

Jhn 6:45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught……
Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send…
1Jn 2:27 And as for you, the anointing you received from Him…

rather, I received it by revelation

God directly made known to Paul the gospel he was commissioned to preach. His calling and message rested on divine disclosure rather than human approval.

Eph 3:3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation…
1Co 2:10 But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.…
2Co 12:1 I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to gain,…

from Jesus Christ.

The risen Christ personally confronted and appointed Paul, transforming a persecutor of the church into an apostle. Christ remained actively at work after His resurrection, revealing His will and establishing Paul’s authority to proclaim the gospel.

Act 26:16-18 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared…
Act 22:14-15 Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you…
1Co 15:8 And last of all He appeared to me also…

For you have heard of my former way of life in Judaism,

Paul’s earlier conduct was widely known. As a Pharisee, he had been rigorously committed to the traditions and law of his people. His Jewish training gave him deep knowledge of the Scriptures, yet he initially failed to recognize that Jesus was the promised Messiah.

Act 22:3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but raised in this city…
Php 3:5-6 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel,…
Act 26:4-5 Surely all the Jews know how I have lived…

how severely I persecuted the church of God

Convinced that the believers in Christ threatened the faith of Israel, Paul actively opposed them. He sought out Christians, approved of violence against them, and had men and women arrested and imprisoned.

Act 8:1-3 And Saul was there, giving approval to Stephen’s death.…
1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy…
1Ti 1:13 I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor,…

and tried to destroy it.

Paul did not merely resist the church; he intended to eradicate it. His later calling as an apostle showed that Christ’s grace could turn a determined enemy of the church into one of its foremost servants.

Act 9:21 All who heard him were astounded and asked,…
Act 26:10-11 And that is what I did in Jerusalem. With authority…
Act 9:1-2 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats…

I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries

Before meeting Christ, Paul excelled among his fellow Jews in knowledge, discipline, and devotion to the law. Trained under Gamaliel in Jerusalem, he belonged to the Pharisees and was recognized as a serious student and defender of Jewish teaching. His former name, Saul, was associated with a life shaped by the religious culture and expectations of Israel.

Act 22:3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but raised in this city…
Php 3:4-6 though I myself could have such confidence.…
Act 26:4-5 Surely all the Jews know how I have lived…

and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

Paul passionately guarded the inherited practices of Pharisaic Judaism, including the traditions added around the Mosaic Law. Believing the church threatened Israel’s faithfulness, he persecuted Christians with determination. His zeal resembled that of earlier Israelites who acted forcefully to defend what they believed honored God, yet it was redirected when the risen Christ revealed Himself to Paul.

Mrk 7:8-13 You have disregarded the commandment of God…
Act 21:20 When they heard this, they glorified God.…
Rom 10:2 For I testify about them that they are zealous for God,…

But when God,

Paul contrasts God’s action with his former zeal in persecuting the church. His conversion did not arise from a change of opinion or personal effort; God intervened and redirected the life of one who had opposed Christ.

Act 26:16-18 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared…
Jhn 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you…
Rom 9:11-12 Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good…

who set me apart from my mother’s womb

Paul understood his life and apostolic mission to have been appointed by God before his birth. His past opposition did not overturn God’s purpose, which included taking the gospel to the Gentiles.

Jer 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…
Isa 49:1 Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples:…
Jdg 13:5 For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son.…

and called me by His grace,

God’s call was undeserved. Paul had not earned apostleship through his religious background or conduct, but received mercy and a new commission through Christ.

2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling…
1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me…

The call of Paul proceeded according to God’s will and purpose. God chose to reveal His Son through Paul and send him as an apostle despite his former hostility toward the church.

Col 1:19 For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,
Mat 11:26 Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.

to reveal His Son in me

God personally disclosed Christ to Paul, turning him from a persecutor of the church into a chosen witness of the risen Lord. The revelation changed both Paul’s understanding and his life, placing Christ at the center of his calling and conduct.

2Co 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”…
Col 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles…
Eph 1:17-18 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,…

so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles,

Paul’s commission included bringing the gospel to the nations beyond Israel. His ministry would carry the message of salvation through Christ across the Roman world, establishing churches among Gentile peoples.

Act 9:15 “Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument…

Paul withdrew into the Nabatean region east and south of Damascus, likely for a period of instruction, prayer, and preparation under the Lord’s direction. Like other servants of God who were prepared in wilderness settings, Paul was set apart for the mission entrusted to him.

Paul’s visit to Jerusalem involved little contact with the leading apostles. His message and calling had come from the risen Christ, not from instruction received in Jerusalem, though his gospel was fully consistent with the apostolic witness.

James, the brother of Jesus, had become a recognized leader of the Jerusalem church. Though Jesus’ brothers had not believed during His earthly ministry, James later became a faithful witness of the resurrection and a respected servant in the early church. His presence supports Paul’s account of this brief visit.

Mrk 6:3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary…
1Co 15:7 Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

I assure you before God

Paul calls God as witness to the truth of his account. Such an appeal carries solemn weight, especially as he defends the divine origin of his apostleship and gospel.

Rom 1:9 God, whom I serve with my spirit in preaching the gospel…
1Th 2:5 As you know, we never used words of flattery…

His letter provides a public, lasting testimony to the Galatian churches. Paul writes to correct those who questioned his message and authority.

2Th 2:15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions…

is no lie.

Paul firmly denies any falsehood in his account. His testimony concerning his conversion, instruction, and early ministry is central to his defense that he received the gospel through Jesus Christ, not from human sources.

Later

After his first visit to Jerusalem as a believer, Paul continued the ministry entrusted to him, with time passing before these wider travels.

These congregations were among the earliest Christian communities, formed in and around Jerusalem after Pentecost. Many consisted of Jewish believers who knew the apostles and had witnessed the growth of the church in its earliest years.
