Berean Study Bible PrologueJesus Christ is both the giver and the central subject of the book. Revelation, from the Greek apokalypsis, means an unveiling or disclosure. It unveils God’s plan for the end of the age, the judgment of evil, and Christ’s final victory and reign. Gal 1:12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it;… which God gave Him The Father entrusted this revelation to the Son, displaying their unity in purpose and the Son’s authority to reveal God’s will. Jhn 3:35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things… to show His servants The message is given for Christ’s faithful people, especially believers facing pressure, persecution, and spiritual compromise. Dan 2:28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries,… what must soon come to pass. The events are certain because they are established by God. When the appointed time arrives, they will unfold according to His purpose. Mat 24:6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars,… He made it known by sending His angel God communicated the revelation through an angelic messenger, emphasizing its heavenly origin and authority. Dan 8:16 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between… to His servant John, John, the apostle and longtime witness of Jesus, received these visions while exiled on Patmos. He recorded them for the churches as a testimony of Christ’s coming judgment, victory, and kingdom. Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”… who testifies to everything he saw. John faithfully records the visions and messages given to him by God. His account is presented as reliable eyewitness testimony, reporting the revelation as it was shown to him. Jhn 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things.… This is the word of God The message originates with God and carries His authority. Revelation continues the pattern of divine revelation given through God’s servants, declaring His purposes for Christ, the church, the nations, and the coming judgment. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Jesus is both the giver and central subject of the revelation. The book bears witness to His authority, His victory over evil, His return in glory, and His eternal kingdom. Rev 19:10 So I fell at his feet to worship him. But he told me… Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, Christian congregations commonly received Scripture through public reading, since few believers possessed personal copies. Revelation was to be read in the gathered assembly as God’s authoritative disclosure of coming events and His call to faithfulness. 1Ti 4:13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading… and blessed are those who hear and obey what is written in it, The blessing includes the congregation that receives the book and lives according to its message. Revelation calls believers to worship God alone, reject compromise with the world, endure persecution, and remain faithful to Christ. Jas 1:22-25 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.… because the time is near. The events revealed had entered their appointed course and would culminate in Christ’s return, judgment, and kingdom. The nearness of that fulfillment gives urgency to the book’s commands and comfort to those who remain faithful. 1Pe 4:7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded…

John’s Vision on Patmos“I, John” identifies the writer as John the apostle, one of the Twelve and an eyewitness of Jesus’ ministry, death, and resurrection. His apostolic authority confirms Revelation as the testimony of one commissioned by Christ. Jhn 21:24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things.… your brother and partner John writes not as a distant authority but as a fellow believer joined to the churches in their common life in Christ. The churches belonged to one spiritual family and shared both its blessings and burdens. Heb 3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling… in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance that are in Jesus, Believers already faced persecution for their allegiance to Christ while belonging to His kingdom and awaiting its full public revelation. Faithfulness required endurance under suffering, sustained by their union with Jesus. Act 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples… was on the island of Patmos Patmos was a small, rocky island in the Aegean Sea, used by Roman authorities as a place of confinement. John had been removed from the churches, yet there he received the visions recorded in Revelation. Act 28:1 Once we were safely ashore, we learned… because of the word of God and my testimony about Jesus. John’s exile resulted from his public proclamation of God’s truth and his witness that Jesus is the risen Lord. His suffering reflected the opposition Christians faced for refusing to compromise their allegiance to Christ. Rev 20:4 Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them… On the Lord’s day John received this revelation on Sunday, the day early Christians gathered to commemorate Christ’s resurrection, worship, and break bread. It was distinguished from the Jewish Sabbath and became the regular day of Christian assembly. Act 20:7 On the first day of the week we came together… I was in the Spirit, The Holy Spirit placed John in a prophetic state of direct revelation, preparing him to receive and record what the Lord would show him. Rev 4:2 At once I was in the Spirit, and I saw a throne standing… and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, The voice carried divine authority and demanded immediate attention. Its trumpet-like sound recalls God’s majestic appearance at Sinai and caused John to turn toward the speaker. Ezk 3:12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard… saying, “Write on a scroll what you see John was commanded to preserve the vision in written form so that Christ’s message would be accurately transmitted and retained. Scrolls were the normal writing medium of the period and carried official, durable communications. Jer 36:2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken… and send it to the seven churches: The message was directed to seven real congregations in the Roman province of Asia. Their number, often representing completeness or perfection, presents the churches as a complete body while their individual circumstances reveal conditions found throughout the universal Church. Act 15:23 The apostles and the elders, your brothers,… to Ephesus, Ephesus was a leading commercial and religious center, dominated by the cult of Artemis. Its church was known for diligence and endurance but needed to recover its early devotion to Christ. Rev 2:1 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:… Smyrna, Smyrna was a prosperous port city where believers endured poverty, slander, and persecution. Its church had a reputation for life while lacking spiritual vitality, requiring repentance and renewed watchfulness. Rev 3:1 I know your deeds; you have a reputation for being alive… Philadelphia, Philadelphia occupied a strategic route for travel and commerce. Though weak in worldly strength, the church remained faithful and was given an open door for service that no opposition could close. Rev 3:7 To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:… and Laodicea.” Laodicea was wealthy, known for banking, textiles, and medical treatment. Its self-sufficiency had produced spiritual indifference, and the church was rebuked for being lukewarm rather than wholly devoted to Christ. Rev 3:14 To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:… Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. John responded to the commanding voice by turning toward its source. His vision shifts from hearing the risen Christ to seeing the setting in which Christ addresses His churches. The voice carries divine authority and prepares John for the revelation that follows. Exo 3:3-4 So Moses thought, “I must go over and see… And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, John saw seven lampstands made of gold, recalling the sacred furnishings of the tabernacle and temple, which represented God’s presence and the light of His truth. They represent the seven churches of Asia, each placed in the world to bear witness to Christ. Their number reflects the completeness of Christ’s concern for His churches, and their gold portrays their purity, value, and consecration before God. Rev 2:1 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:… and among the lampstands Christ stands in the midst of the seven churches, represented by the lampstands. Like the sanctuary lampstand, they bear light in a dark world, yet their witness depends on His abiding presence and authority. Rev 2:1 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:… was One like the Son of Man, The glorified Jesus appears as the promised Messiah, fully human and possessing divine authority. He rules over His people and will judge the nations. Dan 7:13-14 In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw… dressed in a long robe, The robe identifies Him with priestly and royal dignity. Having offered Himself for sin, He serves as the eternal High Priest for His people. Mrk 12:38 In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the scribes.… with a golden sash around His chest. Christ stands secure over all opposition, exercising righteous rule that cannot be shaken. Dan 10:6 His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance… and His voice was like the roar of many waters. His voice carries irresistible authority, like the overwhelming sound of a great waterfall or the sea. Ezk 43:2 I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east.… He held in His right hand seven stars, Christ holds the seven angels of the churches, showing His authority over their ministry and His care for each congregation. The seven stars also reflect the completeness of His oversight of the churches. Rev 2:1 To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:… and a sharp double-edged sword came from His mouth. Christ’s spoken judgment is true, penetrating, and final. His word exposes sin, distinguishes righteousness from rebellion, and will bring justice against His enemies. Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword… His face was like the sun shining at its brightest. The radiant glory of Christ reveals His divine majesty and holiness. John sees the risen Lord in overwhelming splendor, the One who brings light to His people and whose presence no darkness can withstand. Mat 17:2 There He was transfigured before them. His face shone… When I saw Him, John beheld the risen Christ in unveiled glory during his exile on Patmos. The vision revealed the Lord’s majesty, holiness, and authority over His churches. Ezk 1:28 The appearance of the brilliant light all around Him… I fell at His feet like a dead man. Overcome by the presence of the glorified Christ, John collapsed in helpless fear and reverence. Human strength cannot stand before such divine holiness. Mat 28:4 The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men. But He placed His right hand on me Christ responded with personal compassion and sovereign authority. His touch restored John rather than leaving him overwhelmed. Dan 10:10 Suddenly, a hand touched me and set me trembling… and said, “Do not be afraid. The One whose glory caused John to fall also gave him assurance. His appearance to John confirms that the risen Christ remains present and sovereign. Jhn 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”… I was dead, Jesus truly died by crucifixion, bearing the penalty of sin though He Himself was sinless. His death fulfilled God’s redemptive purpose and demonstrated the reality of His humanity. Jhn 19:30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,… and behold, now I am alive forever and ever! His bodily resurrection conquered death permanently. Unlike those raised temporarily during His earthly ministry, Christ lives in an unending, glorified life and reigns forever. Rom 6:9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead… And I hold the keys of Death and of Hades. Christ has authority over death and the realm of the dead. John was also to record the future events shown to him, beginning with the heavenly scenes of Revelation 4.
