Job 36
Berean Study Bible

Elihu Describes God’s Power

And Elihu continued:

Elihu, a younger observer from Buz, resumes his speech after waiting while Job and his three friends argued. Convinced that age and experience had not produced a true answer, he speaks with confidence about God’s justice, wisdom, and power. His words challenge Job’s complaints and the inadequate conclusions of Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. Elihu’s final speeches prepare for the Lord’s appearance from the whirlwind. He stresses that suffering does not place God under human judgment and that people must acknowledge the limits of their understanding before their Creator. Though Elihu does not resolve Job’s trial or serve as the final mediator between God and man, his emphasis on God’s greatness anticipates the divine response that follows.

Job 34:1 Then Elihu continued:
Job 33:1 “But now, O Job, hear my speech, and listen to all my words.
Job 32:18 For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me.

“Bear with me a little longer,

Elihu asks Job to listen patiently as he continues his defense of God’s justice.

Elihu maintains that God’s ways cannot be judged by human suffering alone and that the discussion has not yet reached its proper conclusion.

I get my knowledge from afar,

Elihu presents his defense of God’s justice as grounded in truth beyond human opinion or limited experience. He speaks with confidence that God’s wisdom and purposes extend far beyond what Job and his friends can see in suffering.

Elihu insists that God remains righteous in all His works, even when His judgments are difficult to understand. His words address Job’s complaints by affirming that the Creator does not act unjustly.

For truly my words are free of falsehood;

Elihu insists that his counsel is trustworthy as he begins to defend God’s justice and wisdom in Job’s suffering. His confidence contrasts with the incomplete understanding displayed throughout the debate, where Job and his friends have struggled to explain God’s purposes.

Job 27:4 my lips will not speak wickedness,…
Pro 8:8 All the words of my mouth are righteous;…
Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver…

one perfect in knowledge is with you.

Elihu boldly presents himself as fully qualified to speak on these matters. His claim heightens the tension of the book, since only God possesses complete knowledge of all events, motives, and purposes. The Lord’s later appearance confirms that human wisdom remains limited before the Creator.

Indeed, God is mighty,

but He grants justice to the afflicted.

God sees those who are oppressed, suffering, or denied justice. Though Job’s trials had not yet been explained, his affliction did not mean that God had abandoned him. The Lord remains the defender of the vulnerable and the judge of those who mistreat them.

Psa 82:3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;…
Psa 140:12 I know that the LORD upholds justice for the poor…
Psa 72:4 May he vindicate the afflicted among the people……

He does not take His eyes off the righteous,

God watches over those who fear Him and walk in obedience, remaining fully aware of their needs, suffering, and circumstances. Job’s trials did not mean that God had abandoned him; they occurred under God’s sovereign care.

Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…

but He enthrones them with kings

God is able to raise the righteous from affliction to honor and to place them among rulers. Joseph and David illustrate how God brought faithful servants from lowly and troubled circumstances into positions of authority according to His purpose.

1Sa 2:8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy…
Psa 113:8 to seat them with nobles, with the princes of His people.

God’s purposes for the righteous extend beyond temporary earthly status. Their final honor and security rest in His enduring judgment and reward, even when their present lives include suffering or humiliation.

Psa 21:6 For You grant him blessings forever; You cheer him…
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of His government and peace…
2Sa 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever…

And if men are bound with chains,

Elihu depicts people confined under severe trouble, like prisoners restrained and unable to free themselves. Such suffering may expose human weakness, sin, or rebellion, yet God remains just and attentive to the afflicted.

Psa 107:10-14 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,…
Psa 105:18-19 They bruised his feet with shackles and placed his neck…

caught in cords of affliction,

Affliction can entangle a person as cords bind a captive. Elihu will argue that God may use suffering to reveal wrongdoing and call people away from pride, though Job’s experience also shows that suffering is not always a direct punishment for specific sin.

Psa 116:3 The ropes of death entangled me; the anguish…
Psa 119:61 Though the ropes of the wicked bind me, …

then He tells them their deeds

God makes people aware of their conduct and exposes what they have done. Elihu presents Him as a just Judge who sees both outward actions and the motives behind them, bringing wrongdoing to light so that people may recognize their need to turn from it.

Ecc 12:14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
Psa 50:21 You have done these things, and I kept silent;…

and how arrogantly they have transgressed.

Their sin is marked by prideful resistance to God’s authority. Rather than humbly receiving His correction, they have acted as though they were accountable to no one. Elihu’s point is that God’s discipline confronts such rebellion and calls sinners to humility.

Isa 2:11 The proud look of man will be humbled…
Oba 1:3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…
Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…

He opens their ears to correction

God uses suffering and discipline to awaken those who have become indifferent or self-reliant. In Elihu’s argument, affliction can expose sin, humble the proud, and bring a person to recognize God’s authority and mercy.

Isa 50:5 The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have not turned back…
Psa 40:6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,…

and commands that they turn from iniquity.

God’s purpose is not merely to expose wrongdoing but to call the sinner away from it. Repentance requires turning from sinful conduct and submitting to God’s righteous will.

If they obey and serve Him,

Elihu presents obedience and service to God as the proper response to His correction. He urges Job to receive God’s discipline humbly rather than persist in questioning God’s justice.

Elihu describes the ordinary blessing that accompanies those who submit to God. Prosperity includes the security and well-being God may grant in this life, though Job’s suffering shows that hardship is not always the result of personal disobedience.

A life ordered under God’s rule brings peace and contentment, even when circumstances are difficult. Elihu’s words anticipate Job’s eventual restoration, while pointing beyond temporary blessings to the lasting joy found in God.

Psa 90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion,…
Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;…

Elihu warns that those who resist God’s correction refuse the path of restoration He offers.

God rescues the afflicted by their affliction

Elihu maintains that God can use suffering to humble, correct, and restore those who turn to Him. Affliction is not presented as meaningless; it may expose sin, restrain pride, and lead the sufferer to seek God’s help. Job’s trials had become an occasion for deeper instruction, even though Elihu did not fully understand Job’s righteousness or the reason for his suffering.

Psa 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD…
Hos 6:1 Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us…
Isa 48:10 See, I have refined you, but not as silver;…

and opens their ears in oppression.

Hardship often brings people to listen more carefully to God’s warning and command. When human strength and security fail, the afflicted may become receptive to the truth they had resisted in prosperity. God’s purpose in such discipline is not merely punishment, but to call people away from sin and toward obedience.

Job 33:16-17 He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings…
Isa 50:5 The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have not turned back…
Psa 40:6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,…

Indeed, He drew you from the jaws of distress

Elihu portrays God as rescuing Job from crushing trouble and drawing him away from a place of danger and pressure.

Psa 107:6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,…
Psa 118:5 In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered…
Psa 81:7 You called out in distress, and I rescued you;…

to a spacious and broad place,

The open place pictures safety, freedom, and relief after affliction, in contrast to the confinement and fear of distress.

Psa 18:19 He brought me out into the open; He rescued me…
2Sa 22:20 He brought me out into the open; He rescued me…
Psa 31:8 You have not delivered me to the enemy; You have set my feet…

to a table full of richness.

God’s intended outcome was not Job’s ruin but provision and restoration, pictured by a table abundantly supplied with food.

Isa 25:6 On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will prepare a banquet…
Psa 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.…
Pro 9:2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;…

But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked;

Elihu warns Job that his complaints and arguments have brought him dangerously close to the mindset and outcome of the wicked. Though Job was introduced as blameless and upright, his suffering had led him to question God’s dealings with him.

Job 34:11-12 For according to a man’s deeds He repays him;…
Psa 94:23 He will bring upon them their own iniquity and destroy them…
Rom 2:5-6 But because of your hard and unrepentant heart,…

judgment and justice have seized you.

Elihu presents God’s justice as inescapable and urges Job to submit rather than accuse God. His counsel reflects the conviction that God rules rightly, even when His purposes in suffering are not immediately understood.

Psa 9:16 The LORD is known by the justice He brings;…
Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;…
Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…

Be careful that no one lures you with riches;

Elihu warns Job not to let prosperity or the promise of gain draw him away from humble submission to God. Wealth could be viewed as a sign of divine favor in Job’s world, but it was never a sure measure of righteousness or God’s approval.

Mrk 4:19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness…
1Ti 6:9 Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation…
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…

do not let a large bribe lead you astray.

No payment can remove God’s discipline or alter His judgment. Elihu urges Job not to seek escape through influence, wealth, or self-justification, but to respond rightly to the God who judges with perfect justice.

Exo 23:8 Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see…
Deu 16:19 Do not deny justice or show partiality…
Pro 17:23 A wicked man takes a covert bribe to subvert the course…

Can your wealth

Job had once possessed abundant livestock, land, and servants, yet all of it was taken from him. Riches cannot shield anyone from God’s judgment or change His purposes.

Pro 11:4 Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,…
Psa 49:6-8 They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.…
Ezk 7:19 They will throw their silver into the streets…

or all your mighty effort

Human strength, influence, and labor cannot overcome the suffering God permits. Job’s losses showed that even great resources and determination are limited before the Almighty.

Psa 33:16-17 No king is saved by his vast army; no warrior…
Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses…
Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help…

keep you from distress?

Neither possessions nor personal power could remove Job’s affliction. Elihu presses Job to recognize that deliverance from trouble rests with God, not with human ability.

Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…
Psa 91:15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him;…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…

Do not long for the night,

Elihu warns Job not to desire the darkness in which God’s judgment removes people suddenly. Job must not seek escape from suffering by longing for death or for the downfall of others, but wait for God’s righteous purpose.

Job 10:20-22 Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may…
Job 17:13-16 If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed…
Isa 38:18-19 For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You.…

when people vanish from their homes.

God can bring calamity that uproots people from the places where they live, as happens in judgment, war, or disaster. Human security is fragile, and Job’s suffering does not place him beyond God’s authority or justice.

Psa 103:16 when the wind passes over, it vanishes…
Job 7:8-10 The eye that beholds me will no longer see me.…
Psa 37:10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…

Be careful not to turn to iniquity,

Elihu warns Job not to let suffering lead him into sinful rebellion against God. Though Job has maintained his innocence, his grief and frustration have brought him near the danger of speaking wrongly about the Lord and demanding an answer from Him.

Pro 4:14-15 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked…
Pro 4:27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;…
Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

for this you have preferred to affliction.

Elihu believes Job is in danger of choosing resentment and self-justification rather than patiently enduring God’s discipline. Affliction is painful, but sin is not a rightful escape from it. Christ, by contrast, endured suffering without turning from the Father’s will.

Heb 11:25 He chose to suffer oppression with God’s people…
1Pe 4:1-2 Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body,…
Psa 119:67 Before I was afflicted, I went astray; but now…

Behold, God is exalted in His power.

Elihu directs Job’s attention to God’s sovereign rule over all creation. His power is perfect, righteous, and beyond human control or judgment.

Psa 21:13 Be exalted, O LORD, in Your strength; we will sing…
Psa 62:11 God has spoken once; I have heard this twice:…
Job 37:23 The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power!…

Who is a teacher like Him?

God alone fully understands His works and ways. Unlike human counselors, He needs no instruction and gives wisdom according to His perfect knowledge.

Psa 94:10 He who admonishes the nations, does He not discipline?…
Isa 48:17 Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel…
Jhn 6:45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught……

Who has appointed His way for Him,

Elihu declares that no creature directs God’s purposes or sets the course He must follow. God governs creation and human affairs by His own wisdom, including the suffering Job could not fully explain.

Job 34:13 Who gave Him charge over the earth? Who appointed Him……
Isa 40:13-14 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or informed Him…
Rom 11:34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been”…

or told Him, ‘You have done wrong’?

No one can bring a rightful charge against God, whose works are always just. Elihu’s words confront the assumption that God must answer to human judgment and call Job to recognize God’s righteousness even amid suffering.

Job 9:12 If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him?…
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…
Rom 9:20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…

Remember to magnify His work,

Elihu directs Job to lift his eyes from personal suffering to the greatness of God’s deeds. God’s power is displayed in creation, providence, judgment, and mercy, all of which remain beyond man’s full control or understanding.

Psa 111:2 Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all…
Psa 92:5 How great are Your works, O LORD, how deep are Your thoughts…
Psa 145:5 The glorious splendor of Your majesty. And I will…

which men have praised in song.

God’s works had long been celebrated publicly through songs of worship and remembrance. Such praise preserved the record of His mighty acts and united His people in acknowledging His rule over all things.

1Ch 16:9 Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.
Psa 105:2 Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.
Psa 147:1 Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God…

All mankind has seen it;

God’s works in creation are openly displayed before every people and nation. Elihu points to the ordered world as clear evidence of God’s greatness, power, and rule over all He has made.

Isa 40:5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed…
Psa 97:6 The heavens proclaim His righteousness; all the peoples…
Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities…

men behold it from afar.

Though God’s works are visible, His wisdom and purposes remain beyond man’s full grasp. Humanity can recognize His majesty, yet cannot approach or comprehend Him on equal terms.

Isa 33:13 “You who are far off, hear what I have done;…
Job 26:14 Indeed, these are but the fringes of His ways;…
Heb 11:13 All these people died in faith, without having received…

Indeed, God is great—

Elihu directs attention from human suffering and argument to God’s supreme majesty. God rules creation with perfect power, wisdom, justice, and goodness, though His purposes are not subject to human judgment.

Psa 95:3 For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.
Deu 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords,…
Jer 10:6 There is none like You, O LORD. You are great,…

beyond our knowledge;

Job and his friends had spoken extensively about God’s dealings, yet none could fully explain why Job suffered. Elihu stresses the limits of human understanding before the Lord, whose wisdom encompasses every circumstance and outcome.

Rom 11:33 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge…
Job 5:9 The One who does great and unsearchable things,…
Psa 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me…

the number of His years is unsearchable.

Unlike mortal people, whose lives are brief and measured, God has no beginning or end. His eternal nature confirms that His rule does not change with time and that His purposes extend beyond the limits of any one generation.

Psa 102:27 But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.
Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You brought forth…
1Ti 1:17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, …

For He draws up drops of water

God governs the waters of the earth, lifting them from seas, rivers, and lakes to sustain the land. Elihu points to the ordered processes of creation as evidence of God’s wisdom and power.

Psa 135:7 He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.…
Job 37:11 He loads the clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning…

which distill the rain

The water God raises returns as rain, providing what fields, animals, and people need for life. Rain was especially vital in the land of Israel, where crops depended upon seasonal rainfall.

from the mist,

What rises invisibly into the air becomes rain by God’s design. The process remains beyond human control, reminding Job that the Creator directs forces that mankind can observe but cannot command.

Gen 2:6 But springs welled up from the earth and…
Psa 148:8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds, powerful wind…

which the clouds pour out

Rain comes by God’s ordering of the created world. In an agricultural society, timely rainfall meant food, security, and continued life, while drought brought hardship. The clouds serve under God’s authority, distributing water upon the earth according to His wisdom.

Psa 77:17 The clouds poured down water; the skies resounded…
Ecc 11:3 If the clouds are full, they will pour out rain…
Psa 147:8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain…

and shower abundantly

The rain is not merely sufficient but plentiful, displaying God’s generous provision for the land and its inhabitants. Its abundance sustains crops, fills streams, and renews the ground after dryness.

Psa 72:6 May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass,…
Ezk 34:26 I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing.…
Isa 45:8 Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies…

on mankind.

God supplies the needs of humanity through His creation, extending rain broadly across the earth. Job’s words emphasize that the natural world continually bears witness to God’s power, care, and rule over all people.

Mat 5:45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.…
Act 14:17 Yet He has not left Himself without testimony…
Lev 26:4 I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit…

Furthermore, who can understand how the clouds spread out,

The vast movement and formation of clouds display God’s wisdom in governing creation. What appears ordinary to man remains beyond his full understanding, revealing the limits of human knowledge before the Creator.

Job 37:16 Do you understand how the clouds float…
Job 37:11-13 He loads the clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning…
Psa 147:8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain…

how the thunder roars from His pavilion?

Thunder comes at God’s command, as though from His heavenly dwelling, declaring His sovereign power over the earth. Elihu uses this image to show that Job cannot judge God’s purposes when even the workings of the sky are beyond human control.

Psa 18:11-14 He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy…
Psa 29:3-9 The voice of the LORD is over the waters;…
Exo 19:16-19 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder…

See how He scatters His lightning around Him

God displays His sovereign power in the storm, directing lightning as He wills. Such manifestations reveal His majesty and remind Job that the forces of creation are neither random nor beyond God’s command.
