Berean Study Bible Consecration of the LandIsrael’s tribes will receive their allotted territories in the restored land, as the land was distributed in the days of Joshua. The division by lot recognizes the LORD as the true giver and ruler of the inheritance. Ezk 47:22 You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves… you are to set aside a portion for the LORD, Before tribal boundaries are assigned, a central tract is reserved for the LORD. The land’s worship and government will be ordered around His presence rather than tribal interests. Lev 25:23 The land must not be sold permanently, because it is Mine… a holy portion of the land This consecrated area will include the sanctuary, the priests’ land, and the Levites’ land. It will stand apart from ordinary inheritance because it belongs to the LORD for His appointed service. Ezk 43:12 This is the law of the temple: Its surrounding territory… 25,000 cubits long and 20,000 cubits wide. Its carefully prescribed boundaries establish a substantial central district, providing space for the sacred institutions and those responsible for temple ministry. Ezk 48:8-10 Bordering the territory of Judah, from east to west,… This entire tract of land will be holy. The whole reserved area is set apart from common use, marking the LORD’s dwelling and worship as central to the life of restored Israel. Ezk 48:12 It will be a special portion for them, set apart… Within this area Within this area, a tract of land was reserved exclusively for the Lord’s sanctuary within the larger holy district. Its separation from the surrounding land marked it as sacred and protected it from ordinary use. Ezk 48:8-10 Bordering the territory of Judah, from east to west,… there is to be a section for the sanctuary The sanctuary stood at the center of Israel’s worship and represented the Lord’s dwelling among His people in the restored order Ezekiel described. Exo 25:8-9 And they are to make a sanctuary for Me,… 500 cubits square, The sanctuary compound measured 500 cubits on each side, forming a clearly defined square. Its symmetrical dimensions reflected the order and holiness required for the place where God’s presence was displayed. Ezk 42:20 So he measured the area on all four sides.… with 50 cubits around it for open land. A surrounding strip of open ground kept the sanctuary distinct from other buildings and activities, preserving a visible boundary between what was holy and what was common. Num 35:2-5 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… From this holy portion, From this holy portion, land was assigned to the priests and centered on the temple, emphasizing worship as central to Israel’s restored life. Ezk 48:8 Bordering the territory of Judah, from east to west,… you are to measure off a length of 25,000 cubits and a width of 10,000 cubits, The specified dimensions formed an ordered sacred district approximately 7.5 miles long and 3 miles wide, based on the standard cubit. God Himself determined its boundaries and purpose. Ezk 48:10 This will be the holy portion for the priests.… and in it will be the sanctuary, Within this consecrated area will stand the sanctuary, the temple complex appointed for sacrifice, priestly service, and the dwelling of God’s glory among His people. Exo 25:8-9 And they are to make a sanctuary for Me,… the Most Holy Place. The sanctuary and its surrounding district were to be regarded as supremely holy, reserved from ordinary use because of the presence of the Lord. 1Ki 6:16 He partitioned off the twenty cubits at the rear… It will be a holy portion of the land God designated this tract as separate from Israel’s common inheritance, marking it for the worship and service centered on His sanctuary. Zec 2:12 And the LORD will take possession of Judah as His portion… to be used by the priests who minister in the sanctuary, The Aaronic priests were entrusted with sacrifices, offerings, and the daily responsibilities of temple worship. Their land provided for their households while keeping them near the place of service. Num 18:5-7 And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary… who draw near to minister before the LORD. Unlike the broader nation, the priests entered the sacred precincts to serve before God according to His commands, bearing the responsibility to preserve holiness in worship. Ezk 44:15 But the Levitical priests, who are descended from Zadok… It will be a place for their houses, The priests were not left without provision; their homes stood within the allotted holy district, enabling them to carry out their duties regularly. Jos 21:13 So to the descendants of Aaron the priest… as well as a holy area for the sanctuary. The surrounding consecrated ground preserved the separation between the sanctuary and ordinary life, honoring the presence of the LORD among His people. Ezk 43:12 This is the law of the temple: Its surrounding territory… An adjacent area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide This substantial tract lay beside the priests’ portion within the sacred district. Its measured boundaries reflect the ordered division of the land in Ezekiel’s vision, where worship and service to the Lord stood at the center of Israel’s restored life. Ezk 48:13-14 Bordering the territory of the priests, the Levites… shall belong to the Levites who minister in the temple; The Levites, though not all priests, assisted the sons of Zadok in the work of the sanctuary and guarded its holiness. Unlike the other tribes, they were not assigned a broad tribal territory, but received this designated inheritance near the temple where they carried out their responsibilities. Ezk 44:10-14 Surely the Levites who wandered away from Me… it will be their possession for towns in which to live. The land provided dwelling places for the Levites and their families, giving them a permanent home while keeping them near the sanctuary. Their possession ensured that those appointed to temple service could live securely and devote themselves to their assigned duties. Num 35:2-3 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… As the property of the city, The land is reserved for Jerusalem’s civic needs and belongs to the city. It is distinct from the portions allotted to the priests, the Levites, and the tribes. Ezk 48:15 The remaining area, 5,000 cubits wide and 25,000 cubits long… you are to set aside an area 5,000 cubits wide and 25,000 cubits long, The measured allotment provides sufficient space for the city and its surrounding common land. Its defined boundaries reflect the ordered distribution of land in restored Israel. Ezk 48:16 and will have these measurements: 4,500 cubits… adjacent to the holy district. The city stands beside the area set apart for the sanctuary, priests, and Levites, placing Israel’s national life near the center of worship without confusing civic property with holy land. Ezk 42:20 So he measured the area on all four sides.… It will belong to the whole house of Israel. Unlike the tribal territories, this city portion is held in common by all twelve tribes, expressing the restored unity of Israel under the Lord’s appointed order. Ezk 47:13-14 This is what the Lord GOD says: “These are the boundaries”…
The Prince’s PortionThe prince receives land beside the sacred district and the city’s common property, placing his inheritance near the center of Israel’s worship and public life. His portion provides for his household and administration without allowing him to seize land from the tribes. Ezk 46:18 The prince must not take any of the inheritance… extending westward from the western side and eastward from the eastern side, His territory lies on both sides of the central allotment, stretching outward toward the borders of the land. The arrangement gives the prince a defined inheritance while preserving the holy district for the temple, priests, and Levites. Gen 13:14-17 After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram,… running lengthwise from the western boundary to the eastern boundary The land runs across the full width of Israel, from west to east, with boundaries established by God’s order for the restored nation. Num 34:2-12 Command the Israelites and say to them:… and parallel to one of the tribal portions. The prince’s inheritance matches the length of the tribal allotments, showing that he serves within the covenant community rather than above it. Jos 13:7 Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance… This land will be his possession in Israel. The prince receives a permanent inheritance within the restored land, separate from the tribal allotments. His portion provides for his office without allowing him to seize property from the people, correcting abuses such as those committed by Israel’s former rulers. Ezk 48:21 The remaining area on both sides will belong to… And My princes will no longer oppress My people, Israel’s leaders had often used authority for personal advantage, taking land and wealth from those under their rule. In the restored order, the princes will govern within limits established by God and will no longer rob the people of their inheritance. Ezk 46:18 The prince must not take any of the inheritance… but will give the rest of the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes. The remaining land belongs to the tribes as their appointed inheritance. The division restores Israel’s tribal order and confirms God’s purpose that each family and tribe possess its rightful portion in the land. Ezk 47:13-14 This is what the Lord GOD says: “These are the boundaries”… For this is what the Lord GOD says: God speaks with sovereign authority, holding Israel’s rulers accountable to His covenant standards. Ezk 3:27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth… ‘Enough, O princes of Israel! The princes had abused their office instead of governing as servants responsible for the people’s welfare. Ezk 22:6 See how every prince of Israel within you has used his power… Cease your violence and oppression, Their rule had been marked by injustice, including the misuse of power against those unable to defend themselves. Jer 22:17 But your eyes and heart are set on nothing… and do what is just and right. God required rulers to administer justice faithfully and govern in a manner consistent with His righteousness. Jer 22:3 This is what the LORD says: Administer justice… Stop dispossessing My people, Land and property had been wrongfully taken from families, violating the inheritance God had given them within Israel. Ezk 46:18 The prince must not take any of the inheritance… declares the Lord GOD.’ The command carries God’s final authority; Israel’s leaders would answer to Him for their conduct. Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Honest ScalesTrade in Israel depended on accurate weights and measures, and altered scales enabled merchants to cheat buyers, especially the poor. God required public and private dealings to reflect justice rather than personal gain. Pro 16:11 Honest scales and balances are from the LORD;… a just ephah, Dry goods were to be measured by a reliable standard so that grain and other necessities could not be withheld or overpriced through fraud. Lev 19:35-36 You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight,… and a just bath. Liquid measures were likewise to be accurate. In Ezekiel’s vision of Israel’s restored worship and civil order, honest commerce stood alongside faithful worship as part of life ordered under God’s rule. Isa 5:10 For ten acres of vineyard will yield but a bath of wine,… The ephah and the bath shall be the same quantity Dry and liquid measures were to be regulated by the same standard, preventing dishonest trade and abuses in offerings. The ephah measured grain, while the bath measured liquids such as oil and wine. Lev 19:35-36 You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight,… so that the bath will contain a tenth of a homer, A bath was one-tenth of a homer, establishing a fixed measure for liquid goods. Such precision supported honest commerce and ensured that offerings brought to the temple were not diminished. Isa 5:10 For ten acres of vineyard will yield but a bath of wine,… and the ephah a tenth of a homer; The ephah likewise equaled one-tenth of a homer for dry goods. By requiring consistent measures, the Lord addressed the injustice that had burdened ordinary people through false weights and unequal dealings. Lev 27:16 If a man consecrates to the LORD a parcel of his land… the homer will be the standard measure for both. The homer provided the common basis for both measures. Israel’s rulers and merchants were accountable to God’s standard of justice in every public and religious transaction. Pro 16:11 Honest scales and balances are from the LORD;… The shekel will consist of twenty gerahs. God established fixed weights for Israel’s commerce, offerings, and public life. Honest measures protected the people from fraud and reflected the justice required within the restored community. Exo 30:13 Everyone who crosses over to those counted must pay… Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels will equal one mina. A mina totaled sixty shekels, providing a reliable standard for larger payments and offerings. These regulations formed part of Ezekiel’s vision of a reordered Israel, where leaders and citizens were to conduct every matter with fairness before God. 1Ki 10:17 He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold;…
Offerings and FeastsThe restored order of Israel included fixed provisions for the temple service. The people were to set apart a portion of their produce for the offerings administered by the prince and the priests. Num 15:19-21 you eat the food of the land, you shall lift up… a sixth of an ephah from each homer of wheat, A homer equaled ten ephahs, making this contribution one-sixtieth of the wheat harvest. Wheat was a principal grain crop and a basic source of food, so its offering acknowledged God as the giver of the land’s produce. Exo 34:22 And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks… and a sixth of an ephah from each homer of barley. The same proportion was required from barley, another major crop in Israel. Uniform measures ensured that the people’s contributions were orderly and sufficient for the sacrifices and worship of the temple. Lev 27:16 If a man consecrates to the LORD a parcel of his land… The prescribed portion of oil, Oil accompanied the temple offerings and supported the regular worship prescribed for the restored sanctuary. It was used in offerings, lamps, and anointing, making it an important part of Israel’s worship. Num 15:4 then the one presenting his offering to the LORD… measured by the bath, The bath was the standard liquid measure, ensuring that offerings were brought according to the fixed requirements God gave. 1Ki 7:26 It was a handbreadth thick, and its rim was… is a tenth of a bath from each cor The required amount was one-tenth of a bath from every cor of oil, a set contribution drawn from the people’s produce for temple service. Deu 14:22 You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce… (a cor consists of ten baths or one homer, since ten baths are equivalent to a homer). The cor, also called a homer, equaled ten baths. These measurements established an orderly system for the offerings and provided a common standard throughout the land. 1Ki 4:22 Solomon’s provisions for a single day were thirty cors… And one sheep shall be given from each flock of two hundred Israel’s people were to provide a measured portion of their flocks for the temple service. The sheep symbolized innocence and purity, prefiguring Christ as the Lamb of God. The requirement distributed responsibility fairly among those who had received the land’s increase. Lev 27:32 Every tenth animal from the herd or flock… from the well-watered pastures of Israel. The animals were to come from the productive grazing lands God had given His people. Their offerings were drawn from His provision and presented in recognition of His ownership. Ezk 34:14 I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains… These are for the grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings, These sacrifices supported Israel’s worship: grain offerings expressed gratitude, burnt offerings dealt with sin and consecration, and peace offerings marked restored fellowship with God. Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,… to make atonement for the people, Sacrificial blood pointed to the seriousness of sin and the need for reconciliation with a holy God. These offerings anticipated the complete atonement accomplished by Christ. Num 15:25 The priest is to make atonement for the whole congregation… declares the Lord GOD. The instruction carries the authority of Israel’s covenant God, who established both the means of worship and the terms by which His people could approach Him. Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,… All the people of the land Israel’s whole community, including those restored from exile, shares responsibility for the worship established in the land. No group is exempt from supporting the order God appoints for the temple. 2Ki 23:30 From Megiddo his servants carried his body in a chariot… must participate Participation is required as part of Israel’s covenant obedience. Worship in the restored nation involves the people as a whole rather than only the priests or rulers. Exo 30:15 In making the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives…… in this contribution The required offering supplies what is needed for the temple services and the sacrifices connected with Israel’s worship. The people’s gifts acknowledge that their land, produce, and prosperity come from the Lord. Exo 30:13-16 Everyone who crosses over to those counted must pay… for the prince The prince receives the contribution so that he can carry out his appointed duty of providing offerings for the nation’s worship. His authority is accountable to God and is exercised for the good of the people. 2Sa 5:2 Even in times past, while Saul was king over us,… in Israel. The command belongs to the future restoration of Israel in its land, where worship, leadership, and public life are ordered according to God’s instructions. Num 18:21-24 Behold, I have given to the Levites all the tithes… And it shall be the prince’s part to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings The prince, Israel’s civil leader in the restored order, bears responsibility for supplying the sacrifices required for public worship. His office remains distinct from the priests, who administer the offerings before the Lord. Ezk 46:4-7 The burnt offering that the prince presents to the LORD… for the feasts, New Moons, and Sabbaths— Israel’s worship follows the calendar God established, including annual festivals, monthly observances, and the weekly Sabbath. Lev 23:1-3 Then the LORD said to Moses,… for all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel. These gatherings preserve the nation’s covenant identity and provide regular occasions for thanksgiving, remembrance, and repentance before God. Exo 23:14-17 Three times a year you are to celebrate a feast to Me.… He will provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings The required sacrifices address sin, express dedication, give thanks for God’s provision, and restore fellowship with Him. The prince’s provision ensures that the whole nation may worship according to God’s commands. Num 6:14-17 he is to present an offering to the LORD… to make atonement for the house of Israel. Atonement concerns the cleansing and reconciliation of the people before a holy God. The sacrifices anticipate the complete and lasting atonement accomplished by Christ, the final sacrifice for sin. Exo 30:15-16 In making the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives…… This is what the Lord GOD says: Ezekiel delivers instructions that carry God’s own authority for the ordering of worship in the restored temple. Ezk 2:4 They are obstinate and stubborn children.… ‘On the first day of the first month The new year began with a solemn act of consecration, setting the worship of God at the center of Israel’s renewed life. 2Ch 29:17 For eight more days they consecrated the house of the LORD… you are to take a young bull without blemish A flawless bull was required for the purification offering, reflecting the holiness demanded in approaching God and the seriousness of sin’s defilement. Exo 29:1 Now this is what you are to do to consecrate Aaron… and purify the sanctuary. The temple was cleansed so that it would remain a holy dwelling place for the Lord among His people. Lev 16:16-19 So he shall make atonement for the Most Holy Place… And the priest is to take some of the blood from the sin offering The blood of the sin offering was applied by the priest as part of the appointed cleansing of the sanctuary. Sin brought defilement into the worshiping community, and God provided sacrifice as the means by which impurity was removed and fellowship maintained. The priest acted on behalf of the people before the Lord, foreshadowing Christ’s final and sufficient sacrifice for sin. Lev 4:16-18 Then the anointed priest is to bring some of the bull's… and put it on the doorposts of the temple, The temple doorposts marked the entrance into God’s dwelling place. Their cleansing showed that access to the holy presence of God required purification. As the Passover blood marked Israel’s homes for deliverance, the sacrificial blood marked the sanctuary as set apart for the Lord. Exo 12:7 They are to take some of the blood and put it on… on the four corners of the ledge of the altar, The altar was the place where sacrifice was offered and atonement was made. Applying blood to its corners cleansed and consecrated it for continued worship. The act emphasized that every part of Israel’s approach to God rested upon the provision He had made for sin. Ezk 43:20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on… and on the gateposts of the inner court. The inner court belonged to the priestly service surrounding the temple. Its gateposts were cleansed because those who entered to minister before the Lord had to do so in holiness. The ritual pointed beyond itself to the cleansing believers receive through Christ, granting them access to God. Ezk 40:28-31 Next he brought me into the inner court through the south gate… You must do the same thing on the seventh day of the month The purification rite performed on the first day of the month was to be repeated on the seventh day. This regular cleansing preserved the holiness of the temple and its altar for worship in the restored order Ezekiel saw. Ezk 43:26-27 For seven days the priests are to make atonement… for anyone who strays unintentionally or in ignorance. Provision was made for sins committed through error rather than deliberate rebellion. Though unintended, such sin still affected the worshiping community and required atonement. Num 15:27-29 Also, if one person sins unintentionally… In this way you will make atonement for the temple. The offering cleansed the sanctuary from the defilement associated with human sin, maintaining it as the holy dwelling place of God among His people. Lev 16:33 and make atonement for the Most Holy Place,… On the fourteenth day of the first month Passover was observed on the fourteenth day of Nisan, the first month of Israel’s religious year, corresponding roughly to March or April. The date preserved the memory of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and marked the beginning of the annual sacred calendar. Lev 23:5 The Passover to the LORD begins at twilight… you are to observe the Passover, The feast commemorated the night God spared Israel’s firstborn in Egypt when He judged the Egyptians. The sacrificial lamb and its blood pointed forward to Christ, whose death provides redemption from sin. Deu 16:1-2 Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover… a feast of seven days, Passover was followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread, a seven-day observance recalling Israel’s hurried departure from Egypt. Together, the feasts joined deliverance through sacrifice with separation from Egypt’s former way of life. Lev 23:6-8 On the fifteenth day begins the Feast of Unleavened Bread… during which unleavened bread shall be eaten. The bread contained no leaven because the Israelites left before their dough could rise. Its continued use kept the Exodus before each generation and represented the removal of corruption from the covenant community. Deu 16:3-4 You must not eat leavened bread with it; for seven days… On that day During the Passover observance, the prince was to carry out the required offering for the nation’s worship. Lev 23:5 The Passover to the LORD begins at twilight… the prince shall provide The civil leader of the restored community bore responsibility to ensure that the prescribed sacrifices were presented. 2Ch 35:7-9 From his own flocks and herds Josiah contributed… a bull as a sin offering The bull provided atonement and ceremonial cleansing, acknowledging the people’s need for forgiveness before God. Lev 4:3-12 If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people… for himself The prince, though a leader, remained accountable to God and required atonement for his own sin. Lev 16:6 Aaron is to present the bull for his sin offering… and for all the people of the land. His offering represented the whole covenant community, joining the nation in repentance and worship. Lev 4:13-21 Now if the whole congregation of Israel strays… Each day during the seven days of the feast, Each day during the seven days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the prince is responsible for providing the required offerings. This feast commemorates Israel’s departure from Egypt and the removal of leaven from their homes. Lev 23:33-36 And the LORD said to Moses,… he shall provide seven bulls and seven rams without blemish Each day he shall provide seven bulls and seven rams without blemish. The repeated number seven reflects the feast’s completeness, while the unblemished animals uphold the holiness required for worship before the LORD. 2Ch 29:21 They brought seven bulls, seven rams, and seven lambs… as a burnt offering to the LORD, The animals are presented as a burnt offering to the LORD, signifying complete consecration to God and acceptance before Him. Lev 1:3-9 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,… along with a male goat for a sin offering. The daily sin offering provides atonement and cleansing, acknowledging that worshipers still require purification as they draw near to God. Num 29:16 Include one male goat as a sin offering,… He shall also provide as a grain offering The prince was responsible for supplying the offerings required for the appointed worship of the restored temple. Grain offerings accompanied the animal sacrifices, expressing gratitude for God’s provision and the dedication of Israel’s labor and produce to Him. Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,… an ephah for each bull Each bull required an ephah of grain, about 22 liters. The fixed measure upheld the order God established for temple worship and gave proper weight to the costly sacrifice of each animal. Ezk 46:7 He is to provide a grain offering of an ephah… and an ephah for each ram, Rams received the same measure of grain as bulls. The offerings were not left to personal preference but were presented according to God’s stated requirements. Ezk 46:5 The grain offering with the ram shall be one ephah,… along with a hin of olive oil for each ephah of grain. A hin of olive oil, about 3.7 liters, accompanied each ephah of grain.
