1 Τότε προσέρχονται τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων Φαρισαῖοι καὶ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
2 Διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταί σου παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων οὐ γὰρ νίπτονται τὰς χεῖρας ‹αὐτῶν› ὅταν ἄρτον ἐσθίωσιν “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
3 Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
4 ὁ γὰρ Θεὸς εἶπεν Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καί Ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’
5 ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε Ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί Δῶρον ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’
6 οὐ μὴ τιμήσει τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ 〈ἢ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ〉 καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
7 ὑποκριταί καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας λέγων You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ Ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; “’These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
9 Μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με Διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”
10 Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.
11 οὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀλλὰ τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
12 Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
13 Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν ὁ Πατήρ μου ὁ οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.
14 ἄφετε αὐτούς τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοί τυφλῶν τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
15 Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολήν ‹ταύτην› But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”
16 Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them.
17 οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?
18 τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.
19 ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι πορνεῖαι κλοπαί ψευδομαρτυρίαι βλασφημίαι For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
20 ταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.” These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
21 Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
22 καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα ἔκραζεν λέγουσα Ἐλέησόν με Κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ ἡ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”
23 Ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἀπεστάλην εἰ μὴ εἰς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 Ἡ δὲ ἐλθοῦσα προσεκύνει αὐτῷ λέγουσα Κύριε βοήθει μοι But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἔστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Ναί κύριε καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ὦ γύναι μεγάλη σου ἡ πίστις γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις καὶ ἰάθη ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
29 Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down.
30 καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἔχοντες μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς κυλλούς τυφλούς κωφούς καὶ ἑτέρους πολλούς καὶ ἔρριψαν* αὐτοὺς παρὰ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.
31 ὥστε τὸν ὄχλον θαυμάσαι βλέποντας κωφοὺς λαλοῦντας κυλλοὺς ὑγιεῖς καὶ χωλοὺς περιπατοῦντας καὶ τυφλοὺς βλέποντας καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν Θεὸν Ἰσραήλ so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
32 Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν καὶ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις οὐ θέλω μή‿ ποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
33 Καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”
34 Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἑπτά καὶ ὀλίγα ἰχθύδια And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
35 Καὶ παραγγείλας τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.
36 ἔλαβεν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.
37 Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων ἦραν ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας πλήρεις And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
38 οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν τετρακισχίλιοι ἄνδρες χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children.
39 Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἐνέβη εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Μαγαδάν And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
