Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,1Λαλούντων δὲ αὐτῶν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν ἐπέστησαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι
being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.2διαπονούμενοι διὰ τὸ διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς τὸν λαὸν καὶ καταγγέλλειν ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ τὴν ἀνάστασιν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν
And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.3καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας καὶ ἔθεντο εἰς τήρησιν εἰς τὴν αὔριον ἦν γὰρ ἑσπέρα ἤδη
However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.4πολλοὶ δὲ τῶν ἀκουσάντων τὸν λόγον ἐπίστευσαν καὶ ἐγενήθη ‹ὁ› ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἀνδρῶν ὡς χιλιάδες πέντε
And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes,5Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον συναχθῆναι αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ
as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.6καὶ Ἅννας ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ Καϊάφας καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ γένους ἀρχιερατικοῦ
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”7καὶ στήσαντες αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ μέσῳ ἐπυνθάνοντο Ἐν ποίᾳ δυνάμει ἐν ποίῳ ὀνόματι ἐποιήσατε τοῦτο ὑμεῖς
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:8Τότε Πέτρος πλησθεὶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἄρχοντες τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ πρεσβύτεροι
If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well,9εἰ ἡμεῖς σήμερον ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται
let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.10γνωστὸν ἔστω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε ὃν Θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐν τούτῳ οὗτος παρέστηκεν ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής
This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’11οὗτός ἐστιν λίθος ἐξουθενηθεὶς ὑφ’ ὑμῶν τῶν οἰκοδόμων γενόμενος εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας
Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”12Καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ σωτηρία οὐδὲ γὰρ ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸ δεδομένον ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐν δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.13Θεωροῦντες δὲ τὴν τοῦ Πέτρου παρρησίαν καὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ καταλαβόμενοι ὅτι ἄνθρωποι ἀγράμματοί εἰσιν καὶ ἰδιῶται ἐθαύμαζον ἐπεγίνωσκόν τε αὐτοὺς ὅτι σὺν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἦσαν
And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.14τόν τε ἄνθρωπον βλέποντες σὺν αὐτοῖς ἑστῶτα τὸν τεθεραπευμένον οὐδὲν εἶχον ἀντειπεῖν
But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,15κελεύσαντες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἔξω τοῦ συνεδρίου ἀπελθεῖν συνέβαλλον πρὸς ἀλλήλους
saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.16λέγοντες Τί ποιήσωμεν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις ὅτι μὲν γὰρ γνωστὸν σημεῖον γέγονεν δι’ αὐτῶν πᾶσιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἰερουσαλὴμ φανερόν καὶ οὐ δυνάμεθα ἀρνεῖσθαι
But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”17ἀλλ’ ἵνα μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖον διανεμηθῇ εἰς τὸν λαόν ἀπειλησώμεθα αὐτοῖς μηκέτι λαλεῖν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ μηδενὶ ἀνθρώπων
So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.18Καὶ καλέσαντες αὐτοὺς παρήγγειλαν ‹τὸ› καθόλου μὴ φθέγγεσθαι μηδὲ διδάσκειν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.19 δὲ Πέτρος καὶ Ἰωάννης ἀποκριθέντες εἶπον πρὸς αὐτούς Εἰ δίκαιόν ἐστιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν ἀκούειν μᾶλλον τοῦ Θεοῦ κρίνατε
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”20οὐ δυνάμεθα γὰρ ἡμεῖς εἴδαμεν καὶ ἠκούσαμεν μὴ λαλεῖν
So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done.21Οἱ δὲ προσαπειλησάμενοι ἀπέλυσαν αὐτούς μηδὲν εὑρίσκοντες τὸ πῶς κολάσωνται αὐτούς διὰ τὸν λαόν ὅτι πάντες ἐδόξαζον τὸν Θεὸν ἐπὶ τῷ γεγονότι
For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.22ἐτῶν γὰρ ἦν πλειόνων τεσσεράκοντα ἄνθρωπος ἐφ’ ὃν γεγόνει τὸ σημεῖον τοῦτο τῆς ἰάσεως
And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.23Ἀπολυθέντες δὲ ἦλθον πρὸς τοὺς ἰδίους καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν ὅσα πρὸς αὐτοὺς οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι εἶπαν
So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,24οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἦραν φωνὴν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν καὶ εἶπαν Δέσποτα σὺ ποιήσας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς
who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things?25 τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν διὰ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου στόματος Δαυὶδ παιδός σου εἰπών Ἵνα‿ Τί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά
The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the LORD and against His Christ.’26παρέστησαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ κατὰ τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ κατὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ αὐτοῦ
“For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together27Συνήχθησαν γὰρ ἐπ’ ἀληθείας ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ ἐπὶ τὸν ἅγιον Παῖδά σου Ἰησοῦν ὃν ἔχρισας Ἡρῴδης τε καὶ Πόντιος Πιλᾶτος σὺν ἔθνεσιν καὶ λαοῖς Ἰσραήλ
to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.28ποιῆσαι ὅσα χείρ σου καὶ βουλὴ [σου] προώρισεν γενέσθαι
Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,29καὶ τὰ νῦν Κύριε ἔπιδε ἐπὶ τὰς ἀπειλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ δὸς τοῖς δούλοις σου μετὰ παρρησίας πάσης λαλεῖν τὸν λόγον σου
by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”30ἐν τῷ τὴν χεῖρά ‹σου› ἐκτείνειν σε εἰς ἴασιν καὶ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα γίνεσθαι διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ ἁγίου Παιδός σου Ἰησοῦ
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.31Καὶ δεηθέντων αὐτῶν ἐσαλεύθη τόπος ἐν ἦσαν συνηγμένοι καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν ἅπαντες τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος καὶ ἐλάλουν τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ μετὰ παρρησίας
Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.32Τοῦ δὲ πλήθους τῶν πιστευσάντων ἦν καρδία καὶ ψυχὴ μία καὶ οὐδὲ εἷς τι τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτῷ ἔλεγεν ἴδιον εἶναι ἀλλ’ ἦν αὐτοῖς πάντα κοινά
And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.33καὶ δυνάμει μεγάλῃ ἀπεδίδουν τὸ μαρτύριον οἱ ἀπόστολοι «τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ» «τῆς ἀναστάσεως» χάρις τε μεγάλη ἦν ἐπὶ πάντας αὐτούς
Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,34Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐνδεής τις ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς ὅσοι γὰρ κτήτορες χωρίων οἰκιῶν ὑπῆρχον πωλοῦντες ἔφερον τὰς τιμὰς τῶν πιπρασκομένων
and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.35καὶ ἐτίθουν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τῶν ἀποστόλων διεδίδετο δὲ ἑκάστῳ καθότι ἄν τις χρείαν εἶχεν
And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus,36Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ἐπικληθεὶς Βαρνάβας ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Υἱὸς παρακλήσεως Λευίτης Κύπριος τῷ γένει
having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.37ὑπάρχοντος αὐτῷ ἀγροῦ πωλήσας ἤνεγκεν τὸ χρῆμα καὶ ἔθηκεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας τῶν ἀποστόλων
