Berean Study Bible The Two WitnessesJohn receives a rod for measuring, an instrument associated with defining boundaries, ownership, and accountability. Its staff-like form also reflects the authority of the One directing the measurement. Ezk 40:3 So He took me there, and I saw a man whose appearance… and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God The command points to a real temple in Jerusalem during the events described. Measuring it marks it as set apart under God’s sovereign care while also identifying it for His purposes in the coming time of tribulation. Ezk 40:4-5 “Son of man,” he said to me, “look with your eyes,… and the altar, The altar remains central to the temple’s worship and sacrifice. Its measurement shows that God takes account of the worship offered there and distinguishes what belongs to Him. Ezk 43:13-17 These are the measurements of the altar in long cubits… and count the number of worshipers there. The worshipers are likewise measured, indicating that God knows those who genuinely approach Him. Though many will reject His rule, He preserves a faithful people even amid the persecution and conflict surrounding Jerusalem. Ezk 9:4-6 “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem,” said the LORD,… But exclude the courtyard outside the temple. The outer court, accessible to the nations, stands outside the protected sanctuary. Its exclusion marks a clear boundary between the place God preserves and the area left exposed to defilement. Ezk 42:20 So he measured the area on all four sides.… Do not measure it, Measuring identifies what belongs to God and falls under His protection. The outer court is deliberately left unmeasured because it will be surrendered to hostile control. Zec 2:1-2 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line… because it has been given over to the nations, Gentile powers will be permitted to dominate the area associated with Jerusalem’s worship. Their authority is real but limited by God’s sovereign purpose. Dan 8:13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one… and they will trample the holy city Jerusalem will endure oppression and desecration under the nations, as it has repeatedly suffered throughout its history. The coming trampling points to a final period of persecution centered on the holy city. Isa 63:18 For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place,… for 42 months. This three-and-a-half-year period is fixed and temporary. God sets the limits of the nations’ rule and will bring their oppression to an end. Rev 13:5 The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and… And I will empower my two witnesses, God will raise up two actual witnesses with divine authority to testify during the tribulation. Their united testimony meets the biblical standard for establishing a matter and confirms the certainty of God’s message to a rebellious world. Zec 4:11-14 Then I asked the angel, “What are the two olive trees… and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, Their ministry will last 1,260 days, or forty-two months—three and a half years. This fixed period falls within the time of intense persecution and judgment foretold for the end times. Dan 7:25 He will speak out against the Most High and oppress… clothed in sackcloth.” Their sackcloth marks them as messengers of mourning, repentance, and warning. They will proclaim God’s coming judgment with the solemn character of the Old Testament prophets. Jer 4:8 So put on sackcloth, mourn and wail, for the fierce anger… These witnesses These witnesses are two real prophetic servants whom God appoints to testify during the tribulation. Their united testimony fulfills the biblical requirement for confirming a matter and publicly establishes God’s truth before a hostile world. Isa 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD… are the two olive trees They are portrayed as men supplied and empowered by God’s Spirit, just as oil sustained the lamps in Zechariah’s vision. Their strength and authority come from God rather than from human position or influence. Zec 4:2-3 “What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,”… and the two lampstands The two lampstands represent two witnesses who bear God’s light in a darkened world. Through their message and ministry, God’s truth is openly proclaimed during a time of widespread rebellion. Rev 1:20 This is the mystery of the seven stars you saw in My right hand… that stand before the Lord of the earth. They serve under God’s direct authority and carry out His commission. The Lord who sends them rules over every nation and will bring the earth under His judgment. Zec 4:14 So he said, “These are the two anointed ones…”… If anyone wants to harm them, If anyone seeks to harm the two witnesses, that person opposes the message and authority God has entrusted to them during their appointed ministry of prophecy in Jerusalem. Psa 105:15 “Do not touch My anointed ones! Do no harm to My prophets!” fire proceeds from their mouths God gives them supernatural power to judge those who seek to silence or destroy them. 2Sa 22:9 Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire… and devours their enemies. Their attackers are completely overcome by the judgment that comes from God. 2Ki 1:10 Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God…”… In this way, anyone who wants to harm them must be killed. Until their testimony is finished, no enemy can take their lives or prevent the completion of their mission. Lev 24:17 And if a man takes the life of anyone else,… These witnesses have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophecy, As Elijah announced drought upon Israel in judgment, the witnesses will exercise God-given authority over the weather. The withholding of rain will mark the seriousness of their testimony and the judgment falling on a rebellious world. 1Ki 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers… and power to turn the waters into blood Like Moses in Egypt, they will bring a visible and deadly sign of God’s supremacy over human rulers and false worship. The judgment will expose the ruin produced by defiance against God. Exo 7:17-20 This is what the LORD says: By this you will know…… and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish. Their authority recalls the plagues God sent against Egypt to judge Pharaoh and deliver His people. The witnesses will act under divine commission, bringing repeated judgments upon the earth throughout the period of their prophecy. Exo 9:14-16 Otherwise, I will send all My plagues against you and your officials…
The Witnesses Killed and RaisedGod preserves the two witnesses until they complete the ministry assigned to them. Their death cannot occur before the appointed time, but their public witness in Jerusalem will come to its intended conclusion. Act 20:24 But I consider my life of no value to me… the beast that comes up from the Abyss The beast is the satanically empowered ruler who opposes God and His people during the tribulation. His emergence from the Abyss reveals the demonic source behind his authority and hostility toward the witnesses. Rev 17:8 The beast that you saw—it was, and now is no more,… will wage war with them, Having been unable to silence their testimony during its appointed duration, the beast will openly move against them. Rev 13:7 Then the beast was permitted to wage war against the saints… and will overpower and kill them. He will be permitted to kill the two witnesses, appearing to achieve a decisive victory. Their deaths will demonstrate the world’s hatred of God’s message, yet their defeat will be temporary and will soon be answered by God’s public vindication. Jhn 16:2 They will put you out of the synagogues.… Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city— The two witnesses will be killed and left publicly exposed in Jerusalem, demonstrating the world’s contempt for their testimony and apparent triumph over God’s servants. Isa 5:25 Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people… figuratively called Sodom and Egypt— Though Jerusalem is the physical location, its rebellion during this period will resemble Sodom’s moral corruption and Egypt’s hostility toward God and His people. Ezk 16:46-49 Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters… where their Lord was also crucified. Jerusalem, the city where Jesus was rejected and crucified, will again become the setting for the persecution of those who faithfully proclaim God’s truth. Luk 23:33 When they came to the place called The Skull,… For three and a half days The two witnesses will lie exposed in Jerusalem for a literal period following their murder, allowing the world to regard their deaths as a final victory over God’s testimony. Dan 12:7 And the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters… all peoples and tribes and tongues and nations People from every part of the earth will be aware of the event and share in the public response to it. Rev 5:9 And they sang a new song: “Worthy are You”… will view their bodies Their unburied bodies will be openly displayed, an intentional act of contempt against men who had proclaimed God’s judgment. Jhn 19:37 And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on… and will not permit them to be laid in a tomb. The refusal of burial will reveal the depth of the world’s hatred and rebellion, treating God’s witnesses as criminals rather than honoring the dead. Jer 16:4 They will not be mourned or buried, but will lie… And those who dwell on the earth The earth-dwellers are those who have identified with the rebellious world system and rejected God’s rule. They stand in contrast to those who belong to God. Rev 13:8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast… will gloat over them The deaths of the two prophets bring open satisfaction to those who had opposed their testimony and resented their warnings. Oba 1:12 But you should not gloat in that day, your brother’s day… and celebrate Their celebration treats the silencing of God’s witnesses as a victory, revealing their hardened opposition to the truth. Est 9:19 This is why the rural Jews, who live in the villages… and send one another gifts, The worldwide exchange of gifts marks a public holiday-like celebration over the prophets’ deaths and displays unity among those who reject their message. Est 9:22 as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies… because these two prophets had tormented them. The prophets’ proclamation of judgment and their miraculous acts exposed sin and brought consequences upon an unrepentant world. What was meant as a warning became unbearable to those determined to remain in rebellion. Exo 9:14 Otherwise, I will send all My plagues against you and your officials… But after the three and a half days, God permits the witnesses’ apparent defeat to last only for the appointed time. Their public death and exposure seem to confirm the world’s victory, but the limit of three and a half days shows that their enemies remain under God’s control. Dan 12:7 And the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters… the breath of life from God entered the two witnesses, God personally restores the witnesses to life before those who had celebrated their death. Their resurrection openly reverses the judgment of the beast and confirms that their testimony came from God. Ezk 37:10 So I prophesied as He had commanded me, … and they stood on their feet, The witnesses rise bodily in full view of the world. Their restoration vindicates their ministry and demonstrates that death cannot silence those whom God has appointed. Ezk 2:1-2 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”… and great fear fell upon those who saw them. Those who witness their resurrection recognize that God has intervened. Fear replaces celebration as the inhabitants of the earth face the reality of His authority and approaching judgment. Act 5:11 And great fear came over the whole church… And the witnesses heard a loud voice from heaven saying, After their resurrection, the two witnesses receive a public summons from heaven. Their ministry on earth has ended, and God openly confirms their authority and faithfulness before those who opposed them. Jhn 12:28-30 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:…… “Come up here.” The command calls them from the earthly scene of persecution and death into God’s presence. Their removal marks God’s vindication of His servants and demonstrates that their enemies have not defeated them. Rev 4:1 After this I looked and saw a door standing open in heaven.… And they went up to heaven in a cloud The witnesses ascend visibly in the cloud associated with God’s glory and presence. Their ascension confirms the completion of their prophetic mission and their participation in the victory of Christ over death. Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up… as their enemies watched them. Those who celebrated their deaths are forced to witness their restoration and exaltation. The event exposes the failure of rebellion against God and anticipates the judgment that will follow. Act 7:54-56 On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged,… And in that hour there was a great earthquake, Immediately following the vindication of the two witnesses, God strikes the city with a visible act of judgment. The great earthquake confirms that the events surrounding their death, resurrection, and ascension are under God’s direct control. Rev 16:18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings,… and a tenth of the city collapsed. Jerusalem, where the witnesses had been killed, suffers substantial but limited destruction. The judgment is severe while leaving survivors to face the reality of God’s intervention. Amo 5:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: “The city that marches out… Seven thousand were killed in the quake, The death of seven thousand people underscores that this judgment was neither accidental nor undefined. 1Ki 19:18 Nevertheless, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel…… and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. Those who remain recognize that the earthquake has come from the God who rules over heaven and earth. Their fear and acknowledgment contrast with the persistent rebellion seen elsewhere in the period of tribulation. Rev 14:7 And he said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give Him glory,… The second woe has passed. The sixth trumpet judgment has ended, including the release of the four angels bound at the Euphrates and the devastating assault of the vast army that kills a third of mankind. Though this judgment is complete, the earth’s rebellion remains unresolved. Rev 9:12 The first woe has passed. Behold, two woes… Behold, the third woe is coming shortly. The seventh trumpet is imminent. It announces the final outworking of God’s judgment, the defeat of earthly rebellion, and the approaching reign of Christ. Rev 22:7 Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one…
The Seventh TrumpetThen the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, bringing the trumpet judgments to their climax and announcing the decisive overthrow of the world’s rebellion against God. 1Co 15:52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye… and loud voices called out in heaven: Heaven responds with a public proclamation that God’s purpose has reached its appointed turning point. Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now have come… “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, Earthly powers, long influenced by Satan and marked by defiance of God, will yield to the rightful rule of the Father and the Messiah. Dan 2:44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven… and He will reign forever and ever.” Christ’s reign will be universal, righteous, and without end, fulfilling God’s promised kingdom and securing final justice. Exo 15:18 The LORD will reign forever and ever!” And the twenty-four elders The elders occupy a distinct place in the heavenly court, representing the ordered worship and service of God’s redeemed people. Rev 4:4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones… who sit on their thrones before God Their thrones and position before God show that they have received honor and authority under His rule, yet remain wholly subject to Him. Dan 7:9-10 As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place,… fell on their faces At the announcement that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of God and His Christ, they leave their seats and bow in complete submission before the sovereign Judge. Rev 7:11 And all the angels stood around the throne… and worshiped God, Their worship recognizes that God alone reigns eternally and has begun to display His kingly power openly in the events leading to final judgment and the establishment of Christ’s kingdom. Rev 4:10-11 the twenty-four elders fall down before the throne… saying: “We give thanks to You, O Lord God Almighty, Heaven responds with gratitude as God openly displays His unmatched authority. The elders recognize Him as the sovereign Creator and Judge whose purposes cannot be resisted. Psa 75:1 For the choirmaster: To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”… the One who is and who was, God’s being is eternal and unchanging. He has ruled over every age of history and remains faithful to complete all that He has promised. Rev 1:4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia:… because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign. God now acts in unmistakable judgment against rebellion and establishes His kingdom in its fullness. What has long been opposed by the nations is brought under His direct rule, preparing the way for Christ’s reign over the earth. Psa 93:1 The LORD reigns! He is robed in majesty;… The nations were enraged, Earthly powers have long opposed God’s rule and persecuted His people. Their rebellion reaches its height in the end-time conflict against Christ and His kingdom. Psa 2:1-2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?… and Your wrath has come. God’s judgment answers persistent human rebellion, unbelief, violence, and idolatry. His wrath is holy and just, bringing an end to those who defy His authority. Psa 2:5 Then He rebukes them in His anger… The time has come to judge the dead The final resurrection and judgment will bring every person before God. The dead will be raised, and each will be held accountable for what was done in life. Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming… and to reward Your servants the prophets, God remembers the faithfulness of those who spoke His word, including prophets who suffered rejection, imprisonment, and death for their obedience. Mat 10:41-42 Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet… as well as the saints and those who fear Your name, All who belong to God and honor Him will share in His reward. Their standing before Him does not rest on worldly importance but on faithfulness to Him. Psa 34:9 Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him… both small and great— God judges without partiality. The overlooked and powerful alike stand before the same righteous Judge. Rev 19:5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying: “Praise our God,… and to destroy those who destroy the earth.” Those who corrupt God’s creation through violence, wickedness, and rebellion will face destruction. God will remove the destroyers and establish His righteous rule over the earth. Gen 6:11-13 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God,… Then the temple of God in heaven was opened, John is shown the heavenly sanctuary, the true dwelling place of God and the pattern for Israel’s earthly temple. Its opening reveals that God is acting openly in history and preparing to bring His purposes to completion. Rev 15:5 After this I looked, and the temple—the tabernacle… and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple. The ark, long associated with God’s covenant, law, mercy, and throne among Israel, appears in heaven as a sign that God has not forgotten His promises. What was hidden in the Holy of Holies is now displayed as God moves toward final judgment and the full establishment of His kingdom. Heb 9:4-5 containing the golden altar of incense… And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm. These signs accompany the visible manifestation of God’s power and announce the severity of His coming judgment. The heavenly vision closes with creation itself responding to the presence and authority of God. Rev 16:18-21 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
