Berean Study Bible I Will Send My MessengerGod would send John the Baptist as the forerunner of the Messiah, calling Israel to repentance and readiness. Mat 11:10 This is the one about whom it is written: … who will prepare the way before Me. John prepared the people to receive the Lord by exposing sin and directing them to Christ. Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD… Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple— Jesus came to Jerusalem and entered the temple with divine authority, including when He cleansed it of corruption. Hag 2:7 I will shake all the nations, and they will come… the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight— Jesus is the Mediator of the promised new covenant, securing forgiveness and reconciliation with God through His sacrifice. Heb 9:15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,… see, He is coming,” says the LORD of Hosts. The Lord’s coming was certain because it rested on the sovereign word of God. Rev 1:7 Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye… But who can endure the day of His coming? The Lord’s arrival brings searching judgment upon sin and rebellion. No one can face His holiness on the basis of personal merit or human strength. Jol 2:11 The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army… And who can stand when He appears? His presence exposes every heart and holds all people accountable. Only those made righteous by God’s mercy can remain before Him. Psa 130:3-4 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities,… For He will be like a refiner’s fire, As fire separates precious metal from impurity, the Lord purifies His people through judgment and discipline, removing what is false and corrupt. Zec 13:9 This third I will bring through the fire;… like a launderer’s soap. He also cleanses what has been defiled, preparing His people for acceptable worship and faithful service. Jer 2:22 Although you wash with lye and use an abundance of soap,… And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; The Lord’s coming brings careful judgment rather than careless destruction. Like a refiner who watches molten silver until its impurities rise and are removed, He will deal patiently and precisely with the sin that has corrupted His people. Zec 13:9 This third I will bring through the fire;… He will purify the sons of Levi The Levitical priests, appointed to oversee Israel’s sacrifices and worship, had failed in their duties and dishonored the Lord through corrupt service. God would cleanse and restore the priesthood so that those responsible for leading the nation in worship could again serve Him faithfully. Num 8:6-7 Take the Levites from among the Israelites… and refine them like gold and silver. The refining image emphasizes both the severity and purpose of God’s discipline. The fire removes dross, not the precious metal itself. The Lord values His covenant people and acts to remove what defiles their service. Pro 17:3 A crucible for silver and a furnace for gold… Then they will present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Purified priests would bring offerings that conformed to God’s commands and arose from reverent hearts. Acceptable worship required more than ritual; it demanded faithful service and righteousness before the Lord. Psa 51:19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,… Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem Judah and its capital, Jerusalem, will again bring sacrifices acceptable to God at His temple. The whole covenant community will share in the restored worship that follows the cleansing of the priests and people. Psa 20:3 May He remember all your gifts and look favorably… will please the LORD, Their sacrifices will no longer be polluted by corrupt worship or empty ritual. Having been purified, they will approach God with the obedience and reverence He requires. Psa 51:19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,… as in days of old and years gone by. The restored worship will reflect the faithful pattern established in Israel’s earlier history, when offerings were brought according to God’s commands and received with His favor. Psa 77:5 I considered the days of old, the years long in the past. “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. God answers those who questioned whether He would act against evil. His judgment would expose sin among His covenant people, showing that He sees both public wrongdoing and hidden corruption. Psa 50:4-6 He summons the heavens above, and the earth,… And I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers and perjurers, Those who sought forbidden spiritual power, violated marriage vows, or corrupted justice through false testimony had rejected God’s commands. The Lord Himself would testify against them, and no deception could conceal their guilt. Deu 18:10-12 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son… against oppressors of the widowed and fatherless, Widows and orphans often lacked protection in Israelite society. Exploiting them revealed contempt for God, who commanded His people to defend the vulnerable. Exo 22:22-24 You must not mistreat any widow or orphan.… and against those who defraud laborers of their wages Employers who withheld or delayed wages abused workers who depended on daily pay for their families. Such injustice violated God’s requirement of honesty and fair dealing. Lev 19:13 You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him.… and deny justice to the foreigner Foreign residents were entitled to impartial treatment under God’s law. Refusing them justice exposed a society governed by self-interest rather than obedience to the Lord. Deu 24:17-18 Do not deny justice to the foreigner or the fatherless,… but do not fear Me,” says the LORD of Hosts. These sins sprang from disregard for God’s authority. The LORD of Hosts, ruler over all heavenly powers, would hold accountable those who lived as though He neither saw nor judged. Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
Robbing GodGod’s character, purposes, and covenant commitments remain steadfast. His holiness does not lessen, and His promises do not fail, even when His people are unfaithful. Psa 102:27 But You remain the same, and Your years will never end. you descendants of Jacob Israel remained the covenant people descended from Jacob, whom God renamed Israel. Their history was bound to the promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Exo 19:3-6 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him… have not been destroyed. Israel’s continued existence rested on God’s mercy rather than its own obedience. Though the nation repeatedly sinned and came under judgment, God preserved a remnant and maintained the line through which His redemptive purposes would be fulfilled. Amo 9:8 Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom…… Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Israel’s history was marked by repeated departure from the covenant God established through Moses. From the wilderness generation through the periods of the judges, kings, exile, and restoration, the people often abandoned God’s commands and pursued their own ways. Their failure involved more than outward disobedience; it revealed an unwillingness to live as the people God had called and set apart for Himself. 2Ki 17:13-15 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD… Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. God’s rebuke includes an invitation to repent. He calls His people to turn from their sin and renew covenant faithfulness, promising restored fellowship rather than immediate rejection. As the LORD of Hosts, He possesses full authority and power to judge, preserve, and restore His people. Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:… “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’ The people’s response exposes their failure to recognize their own unfaithfulness. Though they continued religious practices, they did not see the ways they had dishonored God. Their question prepares for the specific sins addressed in the following passage, including their withholding of what belonged to God. Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return… Will a man rob God? God confronts Judah with the shocking reality that they have withheld what He commanded for His worship and service. Their covenant obligations included bringing the required portions of their increase to sustain the Levites, temple ministry, and those in need. 1Sa 2:29-30 Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering… Yet you are robbing Me! Their neglect was not merely a failure of public duty or generosity; it was disobedience directed against God Himself. By keeping what belonged to Him, they showed disregard for His authority and covenant. Neh 13:10-12 I also learned that because the portions for the Levites… But you ask, ‘How do we rob You?’ The people responded as though they could not recognize their guilt. Their question exposed the distance between their religious profession and their actual conduct. Luk 11:42 Woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of mint, rue… In tithes and offerings. They had withheld both the regular tenth required under the Law and the additional contributions appointed for worship. Their unfaithfulness weakened the ordered life of the temple and revealed a lack of trust in God’s provision. Lev 27:30 Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed… You are cursed with a curse, God’s judgment had fallen on Judah through the hardships affecting the land and its produce. Under the covenant, persistent disobedience brought real consequences upon the nation. Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God… yet you—the whole nation— The guilt was widespread. Though the people had returned from exile and rebuilt the temple, the community as a whole had neglected its responsibilities toward God. Dan 9:11 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away,… are still robbing Me. By withholding the tithes and offerings appointed for the temple service and the Levites, the people withheld what belonged to God. Their failure revealed both covenant unfaithfulness and distrust of His provision. Lev 27:30 Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed… Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, Israel was to bring the required tenth to the temple storerooms rather than withhold any portion. These provisions supplied the Levites and priests, who served at the temple without a tribal land inheritance, and helped sustain the worship life of the nation. 2Ch 31:11-12 Then Hezekiah commanded them to prepare storerooms… so that there may be food in My house. Grain, oil, wine, and other offerings stored at the temple provided for those assigned to its service. Neglecting the tithe left God’s servants without support and disrupted the ordered ministry of the house of God. Neh 13:10-12 I also learned that because the portions for the Levites… Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. God uniquely calls the people to prove His covenant faithfulness by obeying His command. The LORD of Hosts rules over all earthly and heavenly powers and was fully able to provide what Judah feared to lose by giving. Deu 6:16 Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven The image points to God’s control over rain and the harvest. In an agricultural society, rain from heaven determined whether the land produced food or suffered famine. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … and pour out for you blessing without measure. God promised abundant provision for covenant obedience, reversing the scarcity that had come through disobedience. The blessing included fruitful fields, sufficient food, and the restoration of the nation’s stability before Him. Ezk 34:26 I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing.… I will rebuke the devourer for you, God promised to restrain the insects, blight, or other destructive forces that threatened Israel’s crops. In an agricultural society, such losses could bring hunger, debt, and hardship. The protection of the harvest was a tangible covenant blessing for a people who honored the Lord. Jol 1:4 What the devouring locust has left, the swarming locust… so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, Grain, olives, figs, and other produce formed the basis of Israel’s food and economy. Earlier neglect of God’s commands had been accompanied by diminished harvests; renewed obedience would be met with His provision and protection. Jol 1:10 The field is ruined; the land mourns… and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” Vineyards were especially valuable because wine was an important part of daily life, worship, and commerce. Fruitful vines, often symbolizing Israel, signified stability and prosperity in the land God had given Israel. Zec 8:12 For the seed will be prosperous, the vine will yield… says the LORD of Hosts. The Lord of Hosts rules over all creation and possesses authority over every power in heaven and earth. He was fully able to preserve His people’s fields and fulfill His covenant promises. Hag 2:4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD.… “Then all the nations will call you blessed, Israel’s restoration would become evident beyond its borders. Other peoples would recognize that the Lord had renewed and prospered His covenant people after their repentance and obedience. Psa 72:17 May his name endure forever; may his name…… for you will be a land of delight,” The land, once marked by crop failure and hardship, would again display abundance, security, and joy. God’s blessing would affect both the people and the land He had given them. Isa 62:4 No longer will you be called Forsaken, nor your land… says the LORD of Hosts. The promise rests on the authority of the God who rules over every power in heaven and on earth and is able to accomplish all He declares. Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
The Book of RemembranceGod confronts the returned exiles for speaking as though serving Him were pointless and His justice were absent. Jud 1:15 to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict the ungodly… says the LORD. The covenant God who restored Israel to the land hears their complaints and judges their words truthfully. Amo 3:8 The lion has roared—who will not fear?… “Yet you ask, Instead of acknowledging their sin, the people respond with resistance and disbelief. Mal 2:17 You have wearied the LORD with your words;… ‘What have we spoken against You?’ Their question exposes their spiritual blindness. God will show that they have accused Him of rewarding the wicked while neglecting those who serve Him. Exo 16:8 And Moses added, “The LORD will give you meat to eat… You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. After returning from exile, many in Judah expected the covenant blessings promised to an obedient people. Instead, they faced poor harvests, economic pressure, and widespread injustice. Some concluded that serving the Lord made no practical difference, especially when the wicked appeared to prosper. Job 34:9 For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing… What have we gained by keeping His requirements Their complaint revealed a desire for immediate material reward in return for obedience. God’s commands were treated as a burden rather than the rightful rule of their covenant Lord. Their outward observance had not produced the prosperity they expected, so they questioned whether faithfulness had any value. Psa 19:11 By them indeed Your servant is warned; in keeping them… and walking mournfully before the LORD of Hosts? The people had practiced fasting and other signs of mourning, yet their worship lacked trust and reverence. They believed their religious acts had gone unnoticed by the Lord of Hosts, the sovereign ruler over all powers. Their words exposed a heart that measured God’s faithfulness by present circumstances rather than by His covenant promises. Zec 7:5-6 Ask all the people of the land and the priests,… So now we call the arrogant blessed. Many in Israel concluded that the proud were favored because they appeared secure and successful despite their disregard for God. Their complaint revealed discouragement over the delay of divine justice. Psa 73:3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity… Not only do evildoers prosper, The people saw those who practiced wickedness gaining wealth, influence, and stability, while the faithful often endured hardship. They wrongly measured God’s justice only by present circumstances. Jer 12:1 Righteous are You, O LORD, when I plead before You.… they even test God and escape.’” The wicked openly defied God’s commands and seemed to avoid judgment. Israel’s words questioned whether God would act, setting the stage for His assurance that He remembers those who fear Him and will distinguish the righteous from the wicked. Psa 78:18 They willfully tested God by demanding the food they craved. At that time those who feared the LORD spoke with one another, Amid Judah’s spiritual indifference and cynical complaints against God, a faithful remnant remained. They strengthened one another in reverence for the LORD and in loyalty to His covenant. Heb 10:24-25 And let us consider how to spur one another on… and the LORD listened and heard them. God took notice of their words and their faithfulness. He was not distant from those who honored Him, even when the majority had turned aside. Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous… So a scroll of remembrance was written before Him The image reflects royal records that preserved the names and deeds of loyal servants. God’s record assured the faithful that their obedience, worship, and trust would not be forgotten. Isa 65:6 Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silent… regarding those who feared the LORD and honored His name. Their reverence was shown not only in inward devotion but in lives that upheld God’s name. They stood apart from the unfaithful generation as those who belonged to Him. Psa 25:14 The LORD confides in those who fear Him,… “They will be Mine,” says the LORD of Hosts, God declares His covenant claim over those who fear Him and honor His name. As the Lord of Hosts, He possesses all power and authority to preserve His people and fulfill His purposes. Deu 32:9 But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob… “on the day when I prepare My treasured possession. In the coming day of judgment, God will set apart those who belong to Him. They are His valued possession, distinguished from the wicked through their faithful fear of the Lord. Exo 19:5-6 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,… And I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him. God’s judgment will not fall alike on the righteous and the wicked. He will show mercy to His faithful servants as a father compassionately spares an obedient son. Pro 3:12 for the LORD disciplines the one He loves,… So you will again distinguish Israel’s spiritual confusion would give way to clear recognition of God’s justice. Though many had concluded that serving God brought no benefit, the Lord would reveal the true outcome of faithfulness and rebellion. Lev 10:10 You must distinguish between the holy and the common… between the righteous and the wicked, The righteous are those who fear the Lord and live in faithful obedience to Him; the wicked persist in sin and disregard His commands. God’s judgment would expose the difference that had seemed hidden in Malachi’s day. Mat 13:49-50 So will it be at the end of the age: The angels will come… between those who serve God True service includes reverent worship, obedience, and trust in God rather than empty religious activity. Israel’s corrupt sacrifices and compromised priesthood had shown the danger of outward forms without sincere devotion. 1Th 1:9 For they themselves report what kind of welcome you gave us,… and those who do not.” Those who refuse God’s rule may appear to prosper for a time, but they remain under His judgment. The coming day of the Lord would confirm that no one’s response to God is insignificant. Jhn 8:47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God.… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
