1 Peter 4

Living for God’s Glory

Therefore, since Christ suffered in His body,

Christ’s physical suffering in His arrest, scourging, crucifixion, and death accomplished the redemption described earlier. He willingly bore suffering in obedience to the Father and in fulfillment of the suffering servant foretold by Isaiah.

1Pe 3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all,…
Heb 2:14-18 Now since the children have flesh and blood,…
Isa 53:4-5 Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows…

arm yourselves with the same resolve,

Believers are to adopt Christ’s settled willingness to obey God despite opposition. Peter writes to Christians who faced hostility and possible persecution because they belonged to Christ; they must prepare inwardly to endure rather than retreat from faithful obedience.

Php 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus:…
Heb 12:2-3 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author…

because anyone who has suffered in his body is done with sin.

Suffering for Christ marks a decisive break with the former life ruled by sinful desires. Peter does not teach that physical pain removes sin, but that a believer who accepts suffering rather than denying Christ demonstrates a determination to stop living under sin’s control.

1Pe 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree…
Rom 6:6-7 We know that our old self was crucified with Him…

Consequently,

Christ’s suffering and decisive break with sin establish the pattern for those who belong to Him. Having armed themselves with His mindset, believers are to regard their former life as finished and to live in light of His victory.

2Co 5:15 And He died for all, that those who live…
Rom 6:13 Do not present the parts of your body to sin…
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live,…

he does not live out his remaining time on earth

Earthly life is limited, and conversion brings a new direction for the time that remains. A believer’s days are no longer governed by the patterns of life that marked the past.

1Pe 1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work…
Jas 4:14 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow!…
Php 1:23-24 I am torn between the two. I desire to depart…

for human passions,

Peter has in view the sinful desires and practices common in the surrounding pagan world, including sexual immorality, drunkenness, idolatry, and self-indulgence. These desires oppose God’s standards and characterized life apart from Christ.

Tit 3:3 For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled…
Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,…
Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, the components…

but for the will of God.

The believer is called to order life according to God’s revealed purposes, pursuing holiness, obedience, love, and service. Christ Himself submitted to the Father’s will in suffering, and His followers are to live with the same allegiance.

Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…
Eph 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand…
1Jn 2:17 The world is passing away, along with its desires;…

For you have spent enough time in the past carrying out the same desires as the Gentiles:

Peter reminds believers that their former way of life belonged to the time before they knew Christ. Many had come from pagan backgrounds and had once shared the values and conduct common in the surrounding culture. Their conversion marked a decisive break with those former desires and loyalties.

Eph 4:17-19 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord,…
1Th 4:5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles…
Tit 3:3 For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled…

living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry.

These practices characterized pagan social life, religious festivals, and household worship in the Roman world. They involved sexual immorality, uncontrolled appetites, drunken celebrations, and devotion to false gods. Such conduct was incompatible with worshiping the one true God and with the holy life required of those who belong to Christ.

Gal 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality…
Rom 13:13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime,…
Eph 5:3-5 But among you, as is proper among the saints,…

Because of this,

Peter refers to the believer’s break with former sinful desires and commitment to live for God’s will.

1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…
Eph 4:17-19 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord,…

they consider it strange

Former companions often viewed this changed life as an offense because Christians no longer joined accepted pagan customs marked by idolatry, sexual immorality, and excess.

Jhn 15:18-19 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.…
1Jn 3:13 So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
Luk 6:22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude…

of you not to plunge with them

The refusal was not merely private disapproval but a deliberate separation from practices once shared.

2Co 6:14-17 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.…
Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.
Pro 4:14-15 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked…

into the same flood of reckless indiscretion,

Peter portrays such conduct as an uncontrolled rush into moral corruption, including drunkenness, sensuality, and lawless living.

Rom 13:13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime,…
Gal 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality…
Luk 15:13 After a few days, the younger son got everything together…

and they heap abuse on you.

Those who rejected these practices were often mocked, slandered, and treated as enemies of their community.

Mat 5:11-12 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you…
Jhn 15:20 Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant…
1Pe 3:16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you…

But they will have to give an account

Those who slander and oppose believers will answer to God for their words and deeds. Their hostility may appear unchecked in the present, but it remains under God’s authority and will not escape His judgment.

Rom 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

to Him who is ready to judge

God is fully prepared to render righteous judgment through Jesus Christ, whom He appointed as Judge. His judgment is neither uncertain nor delayed by human opposition, and He knows every person’s life and motives.

Jas 5:9 Do not complain about one another, brothers…
Act 17:31 For He has set a day when He will judge the world…
Rom 2:16 on the day when God will judge men’s secrets…

the living and the dead.

God’s judgment extends to every person, whether alive at Christ’s return or already deceased. The dead will be raised, and all humanity will stand before Him. For believers, this confirms that God will vindicate His people and establish justice.

2Ti 4:1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,…
Act 10:42 And He commanded us to preach to the people…
Rom 14:9 For this reason Christ died and returned to life…

That is why the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,

The gospel had been proclaimed to believers during their earthly lives, though they had since died. Their death did not nullify God’s saving work or place them beyond the hope promised in Christ.

Jhn 5:24-25 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Eph 2:1-5 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,…
Col 2:13 When you were dead in your trespasses, God made you alive…

so that they might be judged as men in the flesh,

Like all people, Christians remain subject to physical death and may face hostility, suffering, and condemnation from the world. Their earthly circumstances do not determine God’s final judgment.

Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…

but live according to God in the spirit.

Though condemned by human standards and mortal in the body, believers possess eternal life before God. Death ends neither their fellowship with Him nor the salvation secured through the gospel.

Rom 8:10-11 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin…
Gal 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step…
2Co 3:6 And He has qualified us as ministers of a new covenant,…

The end of all things is near.

Christ’s return and the final consummation of God’s purposes were held before the early church as a present certainty. Believers living under pressure, hostility, and persecution were to remember that the present world order is temporary and that God’s judgment and kingdom are approaching.

Jas 5:8 You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts…
Rom 13:11-12 And do this, understanding the occasion. The hour has come…
1Co 7:29-31 What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short.…

Therefore be clear-minded and sober,

In light of that coming end, Christians were to exercise sound judgment, self-control, and spiritual alertness rather than adopting the indulgence and moral carelessness common in their surrounding culture. Such readiness guarded them against fear, deception, and distracted living.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil…
1Th 5:6-8 So then, let us not sleep as the others do,…
Eph 5:15-18 Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk…

so that you can pray.

A disciplined mind enables faithful prayer. Prayer kept believers dependent on God, attentive to His will, and strengthened to endure suffering while awaiting Christ’s return.

Luk 21:36 So keep watch at all times, and pray that you may…
Col 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful,
Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer…

Above all,

Peter gives priority to the duty most needed among believers facing hardship and hostility.

Col 3:14 And over all these virtues put on love…
1Co 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love…
Mat 22:37-39 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…

love one another deeply,

Their love was to be earnest, steadfast, and expressed in practical care, preserving unity within the church.

1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth…
Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
1Th 4:9-10 Now about brotherly love, you do not need…

because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Love does not excuse sin but forgives personal offenses and seeks restoration rather than conflict, helping protect the fellowship from division.

Pro 10:12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all…
Jas 5:20 Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way…
Psa 32:1 Of David. Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven…

Show hospitality to one another

The early church depended greatly on open homes. Congregations often gathered in houses, and traveling believers, missionaries, and displaced Christians needed lodging and meals. Hospitality carried forward the biblical pattern of receiving others with generosity and care. It expressed the shared life of believers and provided practical support for those serving Christ.

Rom 12:13 Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.
3Jn 1:5-8 Beloved, you are faithful in what you are doing…
Heb 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,…

without complaining.

Hosting could require time, food, space, and personal sacrifice, especially in seasons of hardship or persecution. Peter calls believers to serve willingly rather than resentfully. Hospitality offered with a grateful heart reflects the love and unity God intends within His people.

Php 2:14 Do everything without complaining or arguing,
Jas 5:9 Do not complain about one another, brothers…
1Co 10:10 And do not complain, as some of them did,…

As good stewards of the manifold grace of God,

Believers are entrusted with the varied grace God supplies to His people. Like household managers responsible for another’s property, they must handle every gift faithfully, recognizing that all ability and opportunity come from God and are to be used for His purposes.

1Co 4:1-2 So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ…
Eph 3:2 Surely you have heard about the stewardship of God’s grace…
Luk 12:42-43 And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise……

each of you should use whatever gift he has received

Every Christian has received something from God to employ in the life of the church. These gifts differ according to God’s provision, yet none are given merely for private benefit. Faithful stewardship requires active and responsible use of what God has entrusted.

Rom 12:6-8 We have different gifts according to the grace given us.…
1Co 12:4-7 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.…
Eph 4:7 Now to each one of us grace has been given…

to serve one another.

Spiritual gifts are given to strengthen fellow believers and meet practical and spiritual needs within the church. Such service reflects Christ’s example of humility and places the good of others above personal recognition.

Gal 5:13 For you, brothers, were called to freedom;…
Mrk 10:43-45 But it shall not be this way among you. Instead,…
Jhn 13:14-15 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,…

If anyone speaks, he should speak as one conveying the words of God.

Those entrusted with teaching are to handle God’s truth faithfully, speaking in agreement with Scripture rather than personal opinion or speculation. Their words carry a serious responsibility because they influence the church.

Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;…

If anyone serves, he should serve with the strength God provides,

Every form of ministry depends on God’s provision. Believers serve according to the ability He supplies, recognizing that spiritual fruit does not rest on human strength alone.

Col 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy…
Eph 3:16 I ask that out of the riches of His glory…
Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,

Speaking and service alike are directed toward God’s glory. Through Christ, believers are accepted by God and enabled to carry out the work He gives them.

Rom 16:27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ!…
1Co 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do…
Jhn 15:8 This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit…

to whom be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus Christ possesses eternal glory and power, and His reign will never end. Amen affirms this confession of faith.

Suffering as Christians

Beloved,

Peter addresses believers with pastoral affection, recognizing their shared life in Christ and the close bond that united scattered churches.

1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God…
Php 4:1 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for…

do not be surprised

Hostility toward Christians was not an unexpected departure from God’s care but part of the cost of faithful allegiance to Christ in a hostile world.

1Jn 3:13 So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
Jhn 15:18-20 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.…
2Ti 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives…

at the fiery trial

Their suffering was severe and painful, like fire used to test and refine metal. Persecution exposed the reality of faith and strengthened believers who remained steadfast.

1Pe 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while…
Dan 3:24-25 Suddenly King Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement…
Jas 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials…

that has come upon you,

The trials confronting these churches had reached them under God’s sovereign permission and would serve His purposes in their endurance and witness.

1Th 3:3 so that none of you would be shaken by these trials.…
2Th 1:4-5 That is why we boast among God’s churches…
Act 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples…

as though something strange were happening to you.

Peter reminds them that suffering for Christ was a common experience among His followers, not evidence that they had been abandoned or singled out.

Jhn 16:33 I have told you these things so that in Me…
1Pe 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered…
Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ…

But rejoice

Believers are called to joy not because suffering is pleasant, but because hardship endured for Christ confirms their union with Him and serves God’s purpose in their lives. For the first Christians, often facing hostility, exclusion, and persecution, such joy stood in sharp contrast to the natural response of fear or despair.

Mat 5:12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward…
Jas 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials…
Act 5:41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing…

that you share in the sufferings of Christ,

Christians do not repeat Christ’s atoning suffering, which He accomplished once for sinners, but they may endure rejection and persecution because they belong to Him. Their suffering identifies them with the Lord whom the world rejected and crucified.

Php 3:10 I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection…
2Co 1:5 For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us,…
Rom 8:17 And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God…

so that you may be overjoyed

Present affliction will give way to a joy far greater than the sorrow believers now experience. God’s promised future will fully vindicate those who have remained faithful to Christ.

1Pe 1:8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him;…
Jhn 16:22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again…
Rom 5:2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace…

at the revelation of His glory.

Christ’s glory will be openly displayed at His return, when He comes in power and majesty to judge the world and establish His kingdom. What is now endured in faith will then be seen in light of His eternal glory.

1Pe 5:1 As a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings…
1Pe 1:7 so that the proven character of your faith…
Tit 2:13 as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance…

If you are insulted for the name of Christ,

Believers in the Roman world often faced ridicule, exclusion, and hostility because they openly belonged to Jesus Christ and refused to honor pagan gods or participate in idolatrous practices. Such suffering came not from wrongdoing but from identification with Christ and loyalty to Him.

Jhn 15:20-21 Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant…
Act 5:41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing…

you are blessed,

Those who endure reproach for Christ possess God’s favor even when their circumstances appear harsh. Their suffering does not mean that God has abandoned them; it confirms that they share in the opposition Christ Himself received and will receive the reward God has promised to the faithful.

Luk 6:22-23 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude…
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial…

because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

God’s Spirit remains with believers under persecution, bringing His sustaining presence, strength, and assurance. The glory once associated with God’s presence among Israel now rests upon those who belong to Christ, marking them as God’s own even in the midst of suffering.

Isa 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom…
Num 11:25-29 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him,…
Isa 60:1-2 Arise, shine, for your light has come…

Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer

Murder violates God’s command and brings rightful judgment. Believers were to reject the violence common in the pagan world and live in a manner consistent with the life and teaching of Christ.

Exo 20:13 You shall not murder.
Mat 5:21 You have heard that it was said to the ancients,…
1Jn 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, …

or thief

Theft also brings deserved punishment and destroys the trust necessary within homes, communities, and the church. Christians were expected to labor honestly and provide for others rather than take what belongs to them.

Exo 20:15 You shall not steal.
Eph 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work…
Jhn 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.…

or wrongdoer,

Suffering for criminal or immoral conduct does not bear witness to Christ. God’s people were called to conduct themselves uprightly before a hostile world.

1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…
1Pe 2:14 or to governors as those sent by him to punish…
Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.…

or even as a meddler.

Interfering in matters that do not belong to one’s responsibility could create conflict and dishonor the church. Christians were to live quietly, attend to their own duties, and avoid causing needless trouble.

2Th 3:11 For we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives…
1Ti 5:13 At the same time they will also learn to be idle…
Pro 26:17 Like one who grabs a dog by the ears is a passerby…

But if you suffer as a Christian,

Believers in the early church were often mistreated because they identified with Jesus Christ. Peter himself had endured arrest and beatings for proclaiming Christ. Such suffering resulted not from criminal conduct but from faithful obedience in a hostile world.

Act 11:26 and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch.…
Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ…
2Ti 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives…

do not be ashamed,

Public disgrace was intended to silence and isolate Christians, yet Peter calls them to remain steadfast. Their suffering identified them with Christ, who also was rejected and dishonored by people. Therefore, believers should not be ashamed to suffer because they bear Christ’s name.

2Ti 1:8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord,…
Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power…
Mrk 8:38 If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous…

but glorify God

Believers glorify God when they endure suffering for Christ with faithfulness, holiness, and trust in Him, refusing to deny Christ or repay evil for evil.

1Co 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God…
Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,…
1Co 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do…

that you bear that name.

The name Christian marks those who belong to Christ, live under His authority, and are part of His body, the Church. It carries both the privilege of belonging to Him and the cost of being identified with Him before the world.

Jas 2:7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the noble name…
Act 9:15 “Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument…
3Jn 1:7 For they went out on behalf of the Name,…

For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God;

God’s judgment begins among believers, His household, not as condemnation but as discipline and purification. The hardships faced by the early church exposed genuine faith, corrected sin, and prepared God’s people to endure faithfully under pressure.

Ezk 9:6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and maidens,…
Jer 25:29 For behold, I am beginning to bring disaster…
Mal 3:1-3 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…

and if it begins with us,

Peter includes himself with the churches receiving this letter. Christians are accountable to God for the light and responsibility they have received, and their trials serve to test and strengthen their faith.

1Co 11:32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are…
Heb 12:6 For the Lord disciplines the one He loves,…
Amo 3:2 Only you have I known from all the families of the earth;…

what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?

If believers undergo God’s refining judgment in this life, those who reject the gospel will face His final judgment without mercy. Their refusal to obey God’s message carries eternal consequences.

2Th 1:8-9 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…
Jhn 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life…
Rom 2:8-9 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth,…

And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,

Believers are saved by God’s grace, yet their path includes suffering, discipline, and perseverance in a hostile world. Peter’s readers faced pressure and persecution for following Christ, and their endurance demonstrated the reality of their faith.

Pro 11:31 If the righteous receive their due on earth,…
Act 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples…
Mat 7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life,…

what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

If God judges and purifies His own people, those who remain in rebellion against Him will face His judgment without hope. The contrast underscores the serious outcome awaiting those who reject God’s rule and remain in sin.

Psa 1:5-6 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,…
2Pe 2:9 if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue…
Jud 1:14-15 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them:…

So then, those who suffer according to God’s will

Peter addresses believers enduring persecution and hardship because they belong to Christ. Their suffering is not outside God’s sovereign purpose, as seen in the trials of Job and in Christ’s suffering for the redemption of sinners. Those persecuted for righteousness are not abandoned by God but remain within His care.

1Pe 3:17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer…
Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ…
Mat 26:39 Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed,…

should entrust their souls

Like Jesus committing His spirit to the Father at His death, believers are to place their lives and future in God’s hands. Such trust rests on God’s knowledge, authority, and purpose even when suffering is not immediately understood.

1Pe 2:23 When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate…
Psa 31:5 Into Your hands I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me…
Luk 23:46 Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father,…

to their faithful Creator

God made all things and remains faithful to those He has created and redeemed. His character does not change in times of affliction; He is dependable, sovereign, and fully able to preserve His people.

Psa 146:6 the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea…
Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,…
Rev 4:11 Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor…

and continue to do good.

Suffering does not release Christians from obedience. They are to persist in righteous conduct, love, and service, following Christ’s example despite hostility and opposition.

Gal 6:9 Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time……
2Th 3:13 But as for you, brothers, do not grow weary in well-doing.
Heb 13:16 And do not neglect to do good and to share…
