Berean Study Bible A Greeting from PeterFormerly Simon, Peter was a Galilean fisherman called by Jesus and appointed among the Twelve. Though marked by both bold faith and serious failure, he became a leading witness to Christ’s resurrection and a prominent servant in the early church. His apostolic office rests on Christ’s commission and gives weight to his instruction. 2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,… To the elect who are exiles of the Dispersion Peter addresses believers as God’s chosen people, belonging to Him by His purpose and grace. They lived scattered among unbelieving societies and were strangers in the world, awaiting their true inheritance with God. Jas 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,… throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, These Roman provinces lay across Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey. The churches there were separated by distance and culture, yet united in Christ amid social pressure and suffering. Act 2:9-11 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia,… chosen Their standing before God did not rest on ancestry, status, or human merit, but on His sovereign grace. Their election gave them a secure identity and purpose despite the hardships they faced. 1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood… according to the foreknowledge of God the Father God’s choice of His people rests within His eternal purpose and perfect knowledge. As Father, He brings believers into His household through a personal covenant relationship. Act 2:23 He was delivered up by God’s set plan and foreknowledge,… and sanctified by the Spirit The Holy Spirit sets believers apart from sin and continually works in them to form lives marked by holiness and faithfulness to God. 2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers… for obedience to Jesus Christ Those called by God are set apart to live under Christ’s authority, following Him not merely in outward conduct but from renewed hearts. Heb 5:9 And having been made perfect, He became the source… and sprinkling by His blood: Jesus’ sacrificial death cleanses believers from sin and establishes them in the new covenant, recalling the blood sprinkled in Israel’s covenant ceremony at Sinai. Heb 12:24 Jesus the mediator of a new covenant… Grace and peace be yours in abundance. Peter asks that God’s undeserved favor and the peace secured through reconciliation with Him would increasingly fill the lives of those who belong to Christ. 2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge…
A Living HopePeter opens with praise to the one true God, who is both the God whom Jesus worshiped in His incarnate ministry and the Father who eternally relates to Him as the Son. The words uphold Christ’s full deity and true sonship while directing worship to God. Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,… By His great mercy Salvation begins in God’s compassionate purpose, not in human merit. His mercy answers humanity’s sin and helplessness through the work of Christ. Eph 2:4-5 But because of His great love for us, God,… He has given us new birth God brings believers into a new spiritual life, making them His children and giving them a new identity through the Holy Spirit. This rebirth marks a real beginning, not merely a change of outward conduct. Jhn 3:3-7 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,… into a living hope Believers possess a sure and active expectation that endures beyond present suffering and death. Their hope rests on God’s completed work rather than changing circumstances. 1Co 15:19-20 If our hope in Christ is for this life alone… through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Jesus’ bodily resurrection confirms His victory over sin and death and guarantees the future resurrection of those who belong to Him. It is the foundation of Christian hope and the assurance of eternal life. 2Ti 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,… and into an inheritance Believers receive a lasting inheritance through their adoption as God’s children. Unlike Israel’s allotted land in Canaan, this inheritance belongs to the coming heavenly kingdom and is secured through Christ. Eph 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own,… that is imperishable, It cannot be destroyed, exhausted, or diminished. Earthly possessions and kingdoms pass away, but what God has prepared for His people endures forever. 1Co 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead:… undefiled, Nothing sinful, corrupt, or ceremonially unclean can stain it. It reflects the holiness of God and remains untouched by the fallen condition of the present world. Heb 7:26 Such a high priest truly befits us—One who is holy,… and unfading, Its glory never withers or loses its worth. It will remain as full and radiant in eternity as when it is first received. 1Pe 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, … reserved in heaven for you, God keeps this inheritance secure in His presence until the day believers enter into it. Its safety does not depend on earthly circumstances but on God’s faithfulness and the completed work of Christ. Col 1:5 the faith and love proceeding from the hope stored up… who through faith Believers receive and continue in God’s saving work by trusting Him and relying on His promises. Faith rests in what God has done through Christ and looks ahead to what He will yet accomplish. Eph 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith… are shielded by God’s power God actively guards His people throughout their earthly lives. His protection preserves them from ultimate spiritual ruin and keeps them secure for the inheritance He has promised. Jhn 17:11-12 I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world,… for the salvation Salvation includes present forgiveness and new life, but its final fullness remains future. It will bring complete deliverance from sin, suffering, death, and every consequence of the fall. 1Th 5:9 For God has not appointed us to suffer wrath,… that is ready to be revealed God has already prepared this final salvation according to His eternal purpose. Its fulfillment awaits the public return of Christ, when what is now promised will be fully seen. 1Co 1:7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift… in the last time. The last time is the consummation of history at Christ’s return. It includes the resurrection, final judgment, and the establishment of God’s righteous new creation. Jhn 6:39-40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me,… In this you greatly rejoice, Believers rejoice in the living hope secured through Jesus Christ’s resurrection and in the inheritance God has reserved for them in heaven. Their joy rests on God’s unchanging promise rather than present circumstances. Rom 5:2-5 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace… though now for a little while Present suffering has a limited duration. Peter contrasts the brief hardships of this life with the lasting salvation and glory awaiting God’s people. 1Pe 5:10 And after you have suffered for a little while,… you may have had to suffer grief Trials bring real sorrow and pain. Christians in Peter’s day faced pressures from hostile neighbors, social rejection, and persecution, yet their suffering remained under God’s sovereign care. Heb 12:11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful.… in various trials Hardships come in many forms, including persecution, loss, illness, and personal adversity. These trials test faith, exposing its genuineness and strengthening believers’ dependence on God. Jas 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials… so that the proven character of your faith— Trials reveal faith as genuine, much as Abraham’s obedience on Mount Moriah demonstrated his trust in God. Such testing does not create faith but exposes and strengthens what God has given. Jas 1:3-4 because you know that the testing of your faith… more precious than gold, Gold was among the most valued possessions of the ancient world, yet proven faith possesses greater worth because it belongs to the eternal inheritance God has promised His people. Pro 3:14-15 for she is more profitable than silver, and her gain… which perishes even though refined by fire— Even refined gold will one day pass away. Fire removes its impurities, providing an image of the hardships through which God purifies His people while earthly wealth remains temporary. Jas 5:3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion… may result in praise, glory, and honor Faithfulness under testing will receive God’s approval. The honor in view is not human recognition but the commendation granted by Christ to those who have remained steadfast. Rom 2:7 To those who by perseverance in doing good… at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ will be openly revealed at His return, when hidden faithfulness will be made known and believers will share in the glory of His kingdom. 1Co 1:7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift… Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; Peter wrote to believers who had never met Jesus during His earthly ministry. They had received the apostolic witness concerning His death, resurrection, and exaltation, and through that testimony had come to love the risen Lord. Their devotion showed that genuine faith rests on God’s revealed truth rather than physical sight. Jhn 14:21 Whoever has My commandments and keeps them…… and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him Christ had ascended to heaven, yet He remained present with His people through the Holy Spirit. Their confidence rested in His promises, His completed sacrifice for sin, and the certainty of His return. Though unseen, He was known as Savior and Lord. Jhn 20:29 Because you have seen Me, you have believed;… and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy, Their joy arose from salvation already secured through Christ and the eternal inheritance awaiting them. It was not dependent on ease or safety, for many faced suffering because of their faith. The joy was beyond ordinary expression because it came from fellowship with Christ and participation in the hope of His coming glory. Jhn 16:22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again… now that you are receiving Believers already possess the saving benefits secured by Christ, even as they await salvation’s final completion at His return. Their faith sustains them through present trials and assures them of God’s preserving power. Heb 9:15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,… the goal of your faith, Faith is directed toward God’s promised end, not earthly comfort or success. It rests in Christ and looks forward to the fulfillment of all He has promised. Heb 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author… the salvation of your souls. Peter identifies the outcome as the full deliverance of the believer’s life from sin, suffering, and death. This salvation is eternal and will be revealed completely when Christ returns. Jas 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth… Concerning this salvation, “Concerning this salvation” refers to the deliverance from sin and promise of eternal life believers receive through Jesus Christ. God purposed this salvation before the foundation of the world and foreshadowed it throughout Israel’s history as He repeatedly rescued His people and faithfully preserved His covenant promises. Luk 24:25-27 Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones,… the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you Old Testament prophets proclaimed the coming Messiah, His suffering, and the salvation He would bring. They announced God’s promised new covenant and looked ahead to the grace fully revealed in Christ’s death and resurrection. Rom 15:8-12 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant… searched and investigated carefully, The prophets diligently examined the revelations they received, seeking to understand the circumstances and timing of their fulfillment. Dan 9:2-3 In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood… trying to determine the time and setting The prophets searched their own revelations to understand when the promised Messiah would come and the circumstances surrounding His work. They received true messages from God, yet many details remained hidden until their fulfillment. Dan 8:15-17 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision… to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing The Holy Spirit directed the prophets’ testimony toward Christ long before His incarnation. Their writings formed part of God’s unified revelation of redemption through the Messiah. Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,… when He predicted the sufferings of Christ The prophets foretold that the Messiah would be rejected, afflicted, and put to death for the sins of others. Jesus fulfilled these predictions through His suffering and crucifixion. Isa 53:3-7 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows… and the glories to follow. Christ’s suffering would lead to His resurrection, ascension, exaltation, and eternal reign. His path from suffering to glory revealed God’s purpose to save His people and establish His kingdom. Luk 24:26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things… It was revealed to them God showed the Old Testament prophets that the full fulfillment of their messages lay beyond their own lifetimes. They spoke of the Messiah’s sufferings and the glory that would follow, receiving truth by the Spirit rather than by human insight. Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan… that they were not serving themselves, but you, Their ministry was directed toward later generations who would receive the promised salvation through Christ. Though they did not see its fulfillment, they faithfully proclaimed what God made known to them. Heb 11:39-40 These were all commended for their faith,… when they foretold the things now announced What the prophets anticipated was fulfilled in the coming, death, resurrection, and exaltation of Jesus Christ. The gospel announced the salvation they had foretold. Act 3:24 Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on… by those who preached the gospel to you The apostles and other gospel messengers proclaimed Christ as the fulfillment of God’s promises, bearing witness to what He had accomplished. 1Co 15:1-2 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel… by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. The same Holy Spirit who inspired the prophets empowered the preaching of the gospel, confirming that its message came from God. Act 2:33 Exalted, then, to the right hand of God,… Even angels long to look into these things. Angels observe with wonder God’s saving work for sinners, a work that displays His wisdom, justice, mercy, and grace. Eph 3:10 His purpose was that now, through the church,…
A Call to HolinessIn light of the living hope, guarded inheritance, and promised salvation described above, believers are to live with deliberate readiness. The image recalls a traveler, worker, or soldier gathering up a long robe before moving quickly. Faith in Christ calls for active obedience, disciplined thinking, and readiness to stand firm amid trial. 2Co 10:5 We demolish arguments and every presumption… Be sober-minded. Believers must remain clear-headed and self-controlled rather than being ruled by fear, worldly desires, false teaching, or the pressures of their surroundings. Such vigilance was especially necessary for Christians living among pagan customs and facing opposition for their faith. 2Ti 4:5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship… Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Christian hope rests completely on God’s grace, which will be fully displayed when Jesus Christ returns. Though believers already possess salvation, they await its final completion, when Christ is revealed in glory and His people receive all that God has promised. 2Th 1:7-10 to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well… As obedient children, Believers belong to God as members of His household and are called to live under His authority. Their new identity requires a response marked by willing submission to the Father who has redeemed them. 1Jn 2:3-6 By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him… do not conform They must no longer conform to the values and practices of the unbelieving world, allowing themselves to be pressed into its mold. Faith in Christ brings a decisive break with the patterns of life that once governed them. Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed… to the passions Sinful desires had directed their former lives, but these desires are no longer to rule those who have been set apart for God. Holiness involves rejecting the impulses that oppose His will. 1Pe 4:2 Consequently, he does not live out his remaining time… of your former ignorance. Before hearing and believing the gospel, they lived without true knowledge of God and His purposes. Their past conduct belonged to that condition; their present life is to reflect the truth they have received. Eph 4:17-19 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord,… But just as He who called you is holy, God’s holiness reveals His absolute purity, moral perfection, and complete separation from sin. The One who calls believers sets the standard for their conduct. Their salvation begins with God’s gracious initiative and purpose, not human effort. Lev 11:44-45 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves… so be holy Believers are commanded to reflect God’s character by living as those set apart for Him. Holiness involves more than outward conduct; it includes a heart devoted to God and a life increasingly separated from sinful desires and patterns. Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness,… in all you do, The command reaches every part of life—conduct, speech, thoughts, relationships, and decisions. Holiness is not confined to worship or religious duties but is to shape the believer’s whole manner of life. Col 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all… for it is written: Peter grounds the call to holy living in God’s revealed Word, drawing from the commands given to Israel in Leviticus. The Old Testament instruction remains authoritative because God’s character and moral demands do not change. Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”… “Be holy, God set Israel apart from the surrounding nations to belong to Him and to live according to His commands. For Christians, holiness includes separation from sin and a life increasingly shaped by obedience to God through the work of the Holy Spirit. Lev 19:2 Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them:… because I am holy.” God Himself is the standard for His people. His holiness expresses His absolute purity, righteousness, and separation from all evil; therefore, those redeemed by Him are called to reflect His character in their conduct. Lev 11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves… Since you call on a Father Believers approach God with the confidence of children who belong to His household, yet His fatherhood also establishes their obligation to honor Him. Mat 6:9 So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven… who judges each one’s work impartially, God’s judgment is perfectly just, weighing every person’s deeds without favoritism, status, or outward appearance. Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.” conduct yourselves in reverent fear Awe before God’s holiness should govern the believer’s conduct, producing obedience rather than carelessness. Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,… during your stay as foreigners. Christians live in the present world as temporary residents whose true inheritance and permanent home are with God. Psa 39:12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help;… For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold Earthly wealth, though highly prized in the ancient world, cannot secure forgiveness, freedom from sin, or eternal life. Silver and gold endure longer than many possessions, yet they remain part of a passing world and are powerless to redeem the soul. Psa 49:7-8 No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom… that you were redeemed Believers were purchased out of bondage to sin by a ransom they could not provide for themselves. The language recalls the release of slaves and the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, pointing to God’s act of rescuing His people at great cost. Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood,… from the empty way of life Life apart from God is ultimately futile—an empty way of life without the knowledge and purpose found in Christ—regardless of religious customs, moral effort, or material success. Christ’s redemption delivers people from sinful patterns and false hopes that cannot bring them into fellowship with God. Jer 2:5 This is what the LORD says: “What fault did your fathers… you inherited from your forefathers, Peter includes inherited traditions and ways of life that had been passed down through generations but could not save. Human heritage, religious ancestry, and established customs do not remove sin; believers receive a new inheritance through Christ. Jer 16:19 O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge… but with the precious blood of Christ, Christ redeemed sinners through His own death, offering His precious blood—a life of immeasurable worth and atonement for sin—in place of those under sin’s judgment. Unlike silver and gold, His sacrifice is eternal and fully sufficient to secure forgiveness and deliverance from sin. Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood,… a lamb without blemish or spot. Jesus was sinless and therefore qualified to be the perfect sacrifice. As the true Passover Lamb, He fulfilled what Israel’s sacrifices anticipated: an innocent substitute whose death provides atonement for His people. Exo 12:5 Your lamb must be an unblemished year-old male… He was known before the foundation of the world, Christ existed eternally with the Father and was appointed before creation as the Lamb who would redeem sinners. His coming was not a response to unforeseen events but the fulfillment of God’s settled purpose. Jhn 17:24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me… but was revealed in the last times In the incarnation, Jesus entered history openly as the promised Messiah. His ministry, sacrificial death, and resurrection marked the decisive fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation. Heb 9:26 Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly… for your sake. Christ was revealed for the salvation of those who believe in Him. Peter directs his readers to see that the eternal purpose of God was carried out for their redemption and hope. 2Co 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,… Through Him you believe in God, Gentile believers, once far from the God of Israel, came to know Him through Jesus Christ and the gospel proclaimed by His apostles. Jesus alone brings sinners into fellowship with God through His atoning death and continuing priestly ministry. Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access to the Father… who raised Him from the dead God the Father publicly vindicated Jesus by raising Him bodily from the grave. The resurrection confirmed that Christ’s sacrifice for sin was accepted and that death had been defeated. Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him… and glorified Him; After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven and was exalted at God’s right hand. The One rejected and crucified by men now reigns with divine authority as the promised Messiah and King. Act 3:13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers… and so your faith and hope are in God. Because God raised and exalted His Son, believers have secure confidence in Him. Their hope rests on God’s demonstrated faithfulness and on His promise of resurrection and eternal life. Rom 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith…
The Enduring WordPeter describes the cleansing that follows receiving and obeying the gospel. Those who have turned from sin and submitted to God’s truth have been set apart for a new way of life. Act 15:9 He made no distinction between us and them,… so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, This cleansing produces sincere love, or philadelphia, meaning brotherly love, within the church. Believers, joined by faith in Christ, are to care for one another faithfully, especially amid hardship and opposition. Rom 12:9-10 Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil;… love one another deeply, from a pure heart. Such love is earnest and sacrificial, not driven by hypocrisy, personal gain, or outward appearance. It reflects the changed heart God requires of those who belong to Him. 1Ti 1:5 The goal of our instruction is the love… For you have been born again, Believers receive new spiritual life through faith in Jesus Christ, passing from spiritual death into a new identity as God’s people. This new birth is not a reform of the old life but the beginning of a life created by God. Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,… not of perishable seed, Natural birth, human lineage, and earthly achievements cannot produce eternal life. Everything derived from fallen human nature is temporary and subject to death. 1Jn 3:9 Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin,… but of imperishable, The life God gives endures because its source is eternal. Those born of God possess a life that death cannot destroy and that will be completed in resurrection. 1Co 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead:… through the living and enduring word of God. God brings this new birth through the proclaimed message of the gospel—His living and enduring word—which remains true and effective in every generation. His word does not fade with changing circumstances but accomplishes His saving purpose in those who believe. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active.… For, “All flesh is like grass, Human life is frail and brief, subject to death since the fall. Grass in the dry climate of the land could spring up quickly and disappear under the heat, providing a familiar picture of mortality. Isa 40:6 A voice says, “Cry out!” And I asked, “What should I… and all its glory like the flowers of the field; Human beauty, strength, status, and accomplishments may appear impressive for a time, yet they cannot endure. Like wildflowers that briefly cover the fields, earthly glory fades despite its outward splendor. Mat 6:28-30 And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies… the grass withers and the flowers fall, Death and decay inevitably overtake every generation. The image prepares the contrast that follows: humanity passes away, but God’s Word remains unchanged and His saving promise endures. Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when… but the word of the Lord stands forever.” Human life and accomplishments pass away, but God’s revealed truth remains unchanged. His promises, commands, and purposes cannot fail. The enduring word includes the gospel of Jesus Christ, grounded in His death and resurrection and confirmed by God’s faithfulness. Isa 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word… And this is the word that was proclaimed to you. Peter identifies this lasting word with the gospel preached to the believers scattered throughout Asia Minor. Through apostolic proclamation, Jews and Gentiles alike heard the good news of salvation in Christ and were brought into God’s redemptive plan. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
