Elijah Flees from Jezebel

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done

Ahab reported Elijah’s victory on Mount Carmel to Jezebel, whose devotion to Baal had shaped Israel’s public worship and persecution of the Lord’s prophets. The report confronted her with the public defeat of the religion she had promoted.

1Ki 18:36-39 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…
1Ki 18:41-46 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink,…

and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

Elijah had executed the 450 prophets of Baal after the Lord answered by fire and exposed Baal’s helplessness. Their death was an act of judgment against those who had led Israel into idolatry and opposed the worship of the Lord.

1Ki 18:40 Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal!”…
1Ki 18:4 for when Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD…
2Ki 9:7-10 And you are to strike down the house of your master Ahab,…

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah,

Jezebel, Ahab’s Phoenician wife and a devoted worshiper of Baal, had promoted idolatry throughout Israel. After Elijah’s victory over Baal’s prophets on Mount Carmel, she responded with a direct and urgent threat delivered by a messenger.

1Sa 19:11 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
2Ki 1:9 Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain with his company…
Est 3:13 And the letters were sent by couriers…

saying, “May the gods deal with me, and ever so severely,

Jezebel sealed her threat with a self-imposed curse, invoking the gods she served. Her oath reveals both her determination and her continued defiance of the Lord despite the public demonstration of His power.

2Ki 6:31 He announced, “May God punish me, and ever so severely…”…
1Ki 2:23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD: “May God punish me,…
1Sa 14:44 May God punish me, and ever so severely,…

if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like the lives of those you killed!”

She vowed to kill Elijah within a day, referring to the prophets of Baal executed after the contest on Mount Carmel. Her threat intensified the conflict between Baal worship and faithfulness to the Lord, placing Elijah in immediate danger.

1Sa 25:22 May God punish David, and ever so severely,…
1Ki 20:42 And the prophet said to the king, “This is what…
Deu 19:21 You must show no pity: life for life, eye for eye…

And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.

After confronting the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elijah fled when Jezebel threatened to kill him. His fear did not erase his faithfulness or the reality of God’s recent victory, but it revealed the pressure and danger he faced as Jezebel remained committed to Baal worship and opposed the Lord’s prophet.

Exo 2:15 When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he sought to kill…
Mat 2:13 When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared…

When he came to Beersheba in Judah,

Elijah traveled south beyond Ahab’s kingdom to Beersheba, a city in Judah near Israel’s southern boundary. The distance emphasizes the urgency of his flight and his desire to escape Jezebel’s reach.

Jos 19:2 and included Beersheba (or Sheba), Moladah,
1Ki 4:25 Throughout the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel dwelt…

he left his servant there,

Elijah continued alone into the wilderness, separating himself even from his companion. Overwhelmed and discouraged, he sought isolation as he faced a personal crisis and prepared to bring his distress before the Lord.

2Ki 2:2 “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”…
Exo 24:14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us…

while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness.

Leaving his servant at Beersheba, Elijah entered the barren Negev alone, fleeing Jezebel’s threat and overwhelmed by fear and exhaustion. The wilderness exposed both his isolation and his need for God’s provision.

Gen 21:14 Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread…
Psa 107:4-5 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path…

He sat down under a broom tree

Beneath the scant shelter of a desert shrub, Elijah collapsed in physical and emotional weakness. The setting reflects the severity of his flight after the confrontation on Mount Carmel.

and prayed that he might die.

Though God had used him mightily, Elijah believed his work had failed and saw no escape from the danger before him. His request reveals the depth of his despair, not a rejection of God’s authority.

Num 11:15 If this is how You are going to treat me, please kill me now…
Jon 4:3 And now, O LORD, please take my life from me,…
Job 7:15-16 I would prefer strangling and death over my life…

“I have had enough, LORD,” he said.

Elijah spoke honestly before the Lord, acknowledging that he had reached the limit of his strength. His long conflict with Ahab, Jezebel, and Israel’s idolatry had left him depleted.

Job 10:1 I loathe my own life; I will express my complaint…
Jon 4:8-9 As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind,…
Jer 20:14-18 Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me…

“Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”

Elijah judged himself unable to accomplish what earlier generations had failed to do: turn Israel fully from idolatry. Yet God had not finished with him, and Elijah’s weakness would become the setting for God’s care, correction, and renewed commission.

Job 14:1-2 “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days…”…
Psa 90:9-10 For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years…

Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.

Worn down by fear, flight, and grief after Jezebel’s threat, Elijah collapsed in the wilderness. The broom tree offered little shelter in the barren landscape, fitting his isolation and despair. Even after a great victory over Baal’s prophets, Elijah faced the limits of human strength and needed rest.

Gen 28:11 On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there…
Psa 3:5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains…
Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone…

Suddenly an angel touched him and said,

God did not abandon Elijah in his weakness. The angel’s arrival showed that the Lord was watching over His servant and intervened with practical care before giving further direction.

Elijah first needed food and strength for the journey ahead. God provided for him in the wilderness, sustaining him when he could no longer sustain himself.

Jhn 21:12 “Come, have breakfast,” Jesus said to them……

And he looked around,

Elijah had fled into the wilderness after Jezebel threatened his life following the defeat of Baal’s prophets. Exhausted and discouraged, he had asked to die and fallen asleep beneath a broom tree. When he awoke, God had not abandoned him in his weakness.

2Ki 6:17 Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes.”…

and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals,

and a jar of water.

In the dry southern wilderness, water was essential for survival. The bread and water showed God’s care for His servant and supplied strength for the journey ahead.

1Ki 17:10 So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived…
Gen 24:18 “Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she lowered her jar…

So he ate and drank

Elijah received what God had provided. Though he had been overwhelmed by fear and despair, the Lord restored him through rest and nourishment.

His recovery was not immediate. Elijah needed further rest, and God patiently continued to care for him before directing him back into service.

Elijah was about to travel to Horeb, the mountain associated with God’s covenant revelation to Moses. The journey would test his strength, but God supplied the nourishment necessary for him to go on.

The LORD Speaks to Elijah at Horeb

There Elijah entered a cave and spent the night.

On Mount Horeb, also called Sinai, Elijah withdrew to the place where God had revealed Himself to Moses and given Israel His law. Fleeing Jezebel’s threats, he found shelter in a cave and waited before the Lord in exhaustion and uncertainty.

1Sa 22:1 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.…

And the word of the LORD came to him,

God did not abandon Elijah in his fear. The Lord personally addressed His prophet, bringing direction at a time when Elijah believed his work in Israel had failed.

1Ki 17:2 Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah:
Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

The question drew Elijah to state his condition and consider why he had fled from the work God had given him. God knew where Elijah was, but called him to recognize his discouragement and return to his appointed mission.

Gen 3:9 But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
Gen 16:8 “Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from,…

“I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied,

Elijah had defended the worship of the true God during Ahab and Jezebel’s promotion of Baal worship. His zeal arose from loyalty to the God who rules over all earthly and heavenly powers.

After the defeat of Baal’s prophets at Carmel, Jezebel sought Elijah’s death. Though he feared that God’s servants had been nearly extinguished, the LORD would reveal that He had preserved a faithful remnant in Israel.

Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD.

Elijah stood on Mount Horeb, the same mountain associated with God’s covenant revelation to Moses. After fleeing in fear and despair, he was summoned to meet the LORD and receive renewed direction for his prophetic ministry.

Exo 24:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain…
Deu 4:11 You came near and stood at the base of the mountain…
Isa 2:3 And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up…

Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.”

The LORD announced His coming, recalling His earlier revelation of His glory to Moses on this mountain. Elijah was being brought into God’s presence to understand that the Lord remained in control despite Israel’s rebellion and the apparent success of Baal worship.

Exo 34:5-6 And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there…
Job 9:11 Were He to pass by me, I would not see Him;…

And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD,

The earthquake further shook the mountain and demonstrated God’s authority over the earth. It prepared Elijah for a revelation unlike the dramatic signs he had witnessed.

Mat 27:51 At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two…
Act 16:26 Suddenly a strong earthquake shook the foundations…

but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

The LORD again withheld His personal revelation from the spectacle. Elijah needed to hear God’s direct word rather than depend on visible signs of judgment and power.

Psa 77:18 Your thunder resounded in the whirlwind;…
Jdg 5:4-5 O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched…

After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.

On Mount Horeb, where the LORD had previously revealed Himself to Moses, Elijah witnessed displays of power associated with God’s judgment and majesty. Yet the LORD did not make His presence known through the wind, earthquake, or fire. Elijah had recently called down fire on Mount Carmel and fled Jezebel’s threats in fear. The events before him showed that God was not limited to the dramatic acts Elijah expected.

Deu 4:11-12 You came near and stood at the base of the mountain…
Heb 12:18-19 For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched…

And after the fire came a still, small voice.

The LORD addressed Elijah quietly and personally, confronting his discouragement and renewing his commission. The still, small voice—a gentle whisper—revealed God’s presence and purpose without spectacle. Elijah was not abandoned, and the LORD still had work for him to do in Israel.

Elijah recognized the sound as God’s quiet voice after the wind, earthquake, and fire. Though God had displayed His power, He now addressed His weary prophet with gentle clarity.

1Sa 3:4 Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered…

“What are you doing here, Elijah?”

The question called Elijah to account for his flight and drew out his troubled heart. God would answer his discouragement with correction, instruction, and a renewed mission.

Gen 3:9 But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”

Jehu, a commander in Israel’s army, was appointed to carry out God’s judgment against Ahab’s dynasty for its violence, idolatry, and promotion of Baal worship. Though his anointing would be carried out later through Elisha’s servant, the command established Jehu’s rule as part of God’s judgment on the northern kingdom. His destruction of Ahab’s house and suppression of Baal worship showed the seriousness of Israel’s covenant unfaithfulness.

Elisha was called from a farming household in Abel-meholah, a fertile area in the Jordan Valley. His appointment ensured that God’s prophetic witness would continue after Elijah’s ministry ended. Elisha would serve Israel through a long period of national instability, confronting kings, declaring God’s word, and performing works of provision, healing, and deliverance.

Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael,

Hazael’s campaigns against Israel would begin the judgment God announced against the house of Ahab and the nation’s persistent idolatry. Jehu, anointed king of Israel, would complete that judgment by destroying Ahab’s descendants and ending Baal’s royal support. His violent purge was not personal ambition but the execution of the sentence God had declared through Elijah.

Elisha carried forward Elijah’s prophetic authority and declared God’s judgment upon those not removed through Hazael or Jehu. His ministry showed that Israel’s leaders and people remained accountable to the Lord. Through the prophet’s word and the events God directed, no guilty party would ultimately escape the judgment appointed against rebellion and idolatry.

2Ki 10:11-17 So Jehu killed everyone in Jezreel who remained…

Nevertheless, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel—

God assured Elijah that he was not alone. Though Israel’s apostasy under Ahab and Jezebel was widespread, the Lord had preserved seven thousand faithful Israelites. Elijah’s despair had led him to believe he was the only remaining servant of God, but God’s purposes had not failed.

Baal worship had been promoted throughout the northern kingdom, often alongside practices that openly defied God’s commands. These Israelites had refused to participate in Baal’s worship or acknowledge him as worthy of submission.

The Call of Elisha

So Elijah departed and found Elisha son of Shaphat.

Elijah obeyed the LORD’s command to appoint Elisha, whose name means “God is salvation,” as the prophet who would follow him. Elisha came from a family established enough to work substantial farmland, yet he was personally involved in the labor. God’s choice of Elisha prepared Israel for continued prophetic ministry during a troubled period in the nation’s history.

2Ki 2:1 Shortly before the LORD took Elijah up to heaven…
2Ki 2:11 As they were walking along and talking together,…

He was plowing with twelve teams of oxen, and he was with the twelfth team.

The twelve teams reveal the size and prosperity of Shaphat’s household. Elisha was not removed from ordinary work but was laboring alongside those under his family’s direction. His calling came in the midst of faithful daily responsibility, requiring him to leave a secure livelihood for God’s appointed service.

Amo 7:14-15 “I was not a prophet,” Amos replied, “nor was I the son…”…

Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak around him.

Elijah’s cloak marked Elisha as the one chosen to receive his prophetic role. The action publicly signaled that Elisha was being set apart to serve the LORD and to continue the work Elijah had begun. Though Elijah would remain active for a time, the transfer of responsibility had begun.

2Ki 2:13-14 Elisha also picked up the cloak that had fallen…
2Ki 2:8 And Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up,…
Rut 3:9 “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth…”…

So Elisha left the oxen,

Elisha turned from the work and household prosperity represented by the twelve yoke of oxen. He was leaving a settled life and a substantial inheritance to enter the uncertain demands of prophetic service.

Luk 5:28 and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him.
Mat 4:20 And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
Luk 14:33 any one of you who does not give up everything he has…

ran after Elijah,

His immediate pursuit showed that he understood the significance of Elijah’s action and desired to answer the call without delay.

2Ki 2:2 “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”…
2Ki 2:4 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here,…

Gen 31:28 But you did not even let me kiss my grandchildren…

Mat 19:27-29 “Look,” Peter replied, “we have left everything…

“Go on back,” Elijah replied,

Gen 31:3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land…
Mrk 5:19 But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own”…

“for what have I done to you?”

Elijah reminded him that the call did not rest on personal attachment to Elijah, but on God’s purpose signified by the mantle.

2Ki 2:9-10 After they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha…
Jhn 21:22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return”…
Jhn 6:67-68 So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”…

So Elisha turned back from him,

Elisha left Elijah briefly to make a final and public break with his former life as a farmer. His return was not hesitation but preparation to follow the call God had placed on him.

Luk 9:62 Then Jesus said, “No one who puts his hand to the plow…

took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them.

The oxen represented Elisha’s livelihood and security. By sacrificing them, he showed that he would not return to his old occupation.

Using the oxen’s equipment for fuel,

Elisha burned the wooden farming implements to prepare the meal, removing the means by which he had worked his fields. His departure was complete and irreversible.
