1	Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω ὁ Ἰησοῦς* ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει ἢ Ἰωάννης	Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John	Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John—
2	καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν ἀλλ’ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ	(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),	although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
3	ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν	he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.	So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
4	Ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας	And he had to pass through Samaria.	Now he had to go through Samaria.
5	ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχὰρ πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ὃ ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ ‹τῷ› Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ	So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.	So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
6	ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πηγὴ τοῦ Ἰακώβ ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς κεκοπιακὼς ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας ἐκαθέζετο οὕτως ἐπὶ τῇ πηγῇ ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη	Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.	Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7	Ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Δός μοι πεῖν	A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”	When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
8	οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν	(For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.)	(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
9	Λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ Σαμαρῖτις Πῶς σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὢν παρ’ ἐμοῦ πεῖν αἰτεῖς γυναικὸς Σαμαρίτιδος οὔσης οὐ γὰρ συνχρῶνται Ἰουδαῖοι Σαμαρίταις	The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)	The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10	Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ λέγων σοι Δός μοι πεῖν σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν	Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”	Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
11	Λέγει αὐτῷ ‹ἡ γυνή› Κύριε οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν	The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?	“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
12	μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ	Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”	Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13	Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Πᾶς ὁ πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου διψήσει πάλιν	Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,	Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
14	ὃς δ’ ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ οὐ μὴ διψήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ ὃ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον	but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”	but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15	Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή Κύριε δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ διέρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν	The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”	The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16	Λέγει αὐτῇ Ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε	Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”	He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17	Ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν ‹αὐτῷ› Οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Καλῶς εἶπας* ὅτι Ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω	The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;	“I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.
18	πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας	for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”	The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19	Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή Κύριε θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ	The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.	“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
20	οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος ὅπου προσκυνεῖν δεῖ	Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”	Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21	Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πίστευέ μοι γύναι ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ Πατρί	Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.	“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22	ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν	You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.	You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23	ἀλλὰ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ Πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ καὶ γὰρ ὁ Πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν	But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.	Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24	Πνεῦμα ὁ Θεός καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας ‹αὐτὸν› ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν	God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”	God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25	Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή Οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν ἅπαντα	The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”	The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26	Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ λαλῶν σοι	Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”	Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
27	Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν Τί ζητεῖς ἢ Τί λαλεῖς μετ’ αὐτῆς	Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”	Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28	Ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς ἡ γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις	So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,	Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
29	Δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα* ἐποίησα μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός	“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”	“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
30	ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν	They went out of the town and were coming to him.	They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31	Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ῥαββί φάγε	Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”	Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32	Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε	But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”	But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
33	Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν	So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”	Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34	Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιήσω* τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον	Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.	“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
35	οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν καὶ ὁ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμόν ἤδη	Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.	Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
36	Ὁ θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἵνα ὁ σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ ὁ θερίζων	Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.	Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
37	ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ ὁ λόγος ἐστὶν ἀληθινὸς ὅτι Ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος ὁ θερίζων	For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’	Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
38	ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν ὃ οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασιν καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε	I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”	I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
39	Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι Εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἃ ἐποίησα	Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”	Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
40	ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρῖται ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας	So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.	So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.
41	Καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ	And many more believed because of his word.	And because of his words many more became believers.
42	τῇ τε γυναικὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὐκέτι διὰ τὴν σὴν λαλιὰν πιστεύομεν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ Σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου	They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”	They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
43	Μετὰ δὲ τὰς δύο ἡμέρας ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν	After the two days he departed for Galilee.	After the two days he left for Galilee.
44	αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐμαρτύρησεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ πατρίδι τιμὴν οὐκ ἔχει	(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)	(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
45	ὅτε οὖν ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἐδέξαντο αὐτὸν οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι πάντα ἑωρακότες ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν	So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.	When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.
46	Ἦλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὅπου ἐποίησεν τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον Καὶ ἦν τις βασιλικὸς οὗ ὁ υἱὸς ἠσθένει ἐν Καφαρναούμ	So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill.	Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
47	οὗτος ἀκούσας ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἥκει ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἠρώτα ἵνα καταβῇ καὶ ἰάσηται αὐτοῦ τὸν υἱόν ἤμελλεν γὰρ ἀποθνήσκειν	When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.	When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48	Εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτόν Ἐὰν μὴ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ἴδητε οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε	So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”	“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49	Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλικός Κύριε κατάβηθι πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν τὸ παιδίον μου	The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”	The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50	Λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Πορεύου ὁ υἱός σου ζῇ Ἐπίστευσεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῷ λόγῳ ὃν εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἐπορεύετο	Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.	“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
51	ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῦ καταβαίνοντος οἱ δοῦλοι ‹αὐτοῦ› ὑπήντησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες ὅτι ὁ παῖς αὐτοῦ ζῇ	As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.	While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
52	Ἐπύθετο οὖν τὴν ὥραν παρ’ αὐτῶν ἐν ᾗ κομψότερον ἔσχεν εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐχθὲς ὥραν ἑβδόμην ἀφῆκεν αὐτὸν ὁ πυρετός	So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”	When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53	Ἔγνω οὖν ὁ πατὴρ ὅτι [ἐν] ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐν ᾗ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὁ υἱός σου ζῇ καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτὸς καὶ ἡ οἰκία αὐτοῦ ὅλη	The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.	Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.
54	Τοῦτο δὲ πάλιν δεύτερον σημεῖον ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐλθὼν ἐκ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν	This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.	This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
