Jews and Gentiles have been brought near through Christ’s blood, made one new people, and built together into God’s dwelling place. Eph 2:11-13 Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles… I, Paul, The apostle personally identifies himself as the one entrusted with this message. Once a Pharisee and persecutor of the church, Paul had been called by the risen Christ to proclaim the Gospel among the nations. Gal 5:2 Take notice: I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves… the prisoner of Christ Jesus Paul’s imprisonment, likely his Roman confinement, was the result of his faithful service to Christ. He regarded himself ultimately as Christ’s prisoner, under the Lord’s authority and within His purpose, rather than as a victim of Roman power. Phm 1:1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother… for the sake of you Gentiles... Paul’s calling to the Gentiles had brought opposition, especially from those who resisted their full inclusion among God’s people. His suffering testified that Gentiles were not second-class believers but fellow heirs of God’s promises in Christ, fulfilling the promise that all nations would be blessed through Abraham’s seed. Act 22:21 Then He said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away… Surely you have heard Paul assumes that the believers in Ephesus and the surrounding churches knew of his apostolic ministry. He had labored in Ephesus for several years, teaching publicly and from house to house as the gospel spread throughout Asia Minor (Acts 19:8–10; 20:20–21). Even believers who came to faith after his departure would have known that Christ had called Paul to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. Eph 4:21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him… about the stewardship of God’s grace God’s grace had made Paul not only a recipient of salvation but also a servant entrusted with a sacred responsibility. The former persecutor of the church had been appointed to proclaim Christ among the nations. Like a steward responsible for his master’s household, Paul was accountable to faithfully make known the mystery of God’s plan and to build up those brought into Christ (1 Corinthians 4:1–2). Col 1:25 I became its servant by the commission God gave me… that was given to me Paul’s ministry was not self-appointed or granted by human authority. The risen Lord called him on the road to Damascus and sent him as a witness to Jews and Gentiles alike (Acts 9:15; 26:16–18). The commission displayed God’s grace, since Paul had once opposed Christ and His people, yet was made an apostle by divine mercy. Act 26:16-18 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared… for you, The Gentile believers were direct beneficiaries of Paul’s calling. Through his ministry, they heard the gospel and were welcomed into the people of God without becoming Jews. In Christ, they were made fellow citizens with the saints, members of God’s household, and fellow heirs of the promises given through the gospel (Ephesians 2:19; 3:6). Rom 15:15-16 However, I have written you a bold reminder on some points,… that is, the mystery God’s redemptive purpose, long concealed in earlier ages, has now been disclosed in Christ. The mystery includes God’s plan to bring believing Jews and Gentiles into one redeemed people, sharing equally in the promises fulfilled through the Messiah. Rom 16:25-26 Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel… made known to me by revelation, Paul received this gospel directly from the risen Lord rather than from human teachers. His encounter with Christ on the Damascus road and the Lord’s subsequent direction of his ministry established him as an apostle sent especially to proclaim Christ among the Gentiles. Gal 1:12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it;… as I have already written briefly. Paul had introduced God’s unifying purpose in Ephesians 1:9–10 and described Gentiles as brought near through Christ’s blood in Ephesians 2:11–22. The revelation of God’s plan forms the foundation for the church’s unity and for the hope of all who belong to Christ. Eph 1:9-10 And He has made known to us the mystery of His will… In reading this, then, Paul directs the Ephesians back to what he has written concerning God’s grace, his apostolic stewardship, and the revelation entrusted to him. His letter would ordinarily have been read aloud in the gathered church, allowing the whole congregation to hear and consider the same apostolic instruction. 2Co 1:13 For we do not write you anything beyond your ability… you will be able to understand Believers were expected to grasp the truth God had revealed through the apostles. The Holy Spirit gives understanding to God’s people through the written word, grounding the church in the gospel rather than secret knowledge reserved for a few. Luk 24:45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. my insight into the mystery of Christ, God had revealed to Paul the long-hidden purpose fulfilled in Christ: Gentiles who believe are fellow heirs with believing Jews, united in one body and sharing the promise of salvation. The mystery does not describe something still concealed, but God’s saving plan now made known through Christ and proclaimed by his apostles. Paul’s insight came through divine revelation and confirmed his calling to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. Col 2:2-3 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,… which was not made known to men in other generations God had not fully disclosed in earlier ages that believing Gentiles would share equally with believing Jews in the blessings promised through the Messiah. The Old Testament anticipated the nations turning to the Lord, as Isaiah foretold that the Servant would be a light to the Gentiles (Isaiah 49:6), yet the full unity of Jew and Gentile in one body remained hidden. Col 1:26 the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations… as it has now been revealed by the Spirit The Holy Spirit unveiled God’s completed purpose through the gospel, guiding Christ’s chosen messengers into truth (John 16:13). The inclusion of the Gentiles was not a human innovation but part of God’s eternal plan, accomplished through Christ’s death and resurrection. 1Co 2:10 But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.… to God’s holy apostles and prophets. The apostles and New Testament prophets received and proclaimed this revelation as the foundational witnesses of the church (Ephesians 2:20). Set apart for God’s service, they testified that salvation in Christ creates one covenant people, united by grace and granted equal access to the Father. 1Co 12:28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles… This mystery is that through the gospel God has revealed His eternal purpose to unite believing Jews and Gentiles in salvation through Jesus Christ. What had been concealed in earlier ages was not absent from God’s promises, for the blessing of all nations was announced to Abraham, but its full manner and scope were disclosed through the apostolic proclamation of Christ crucified and risen. 2Th 2:14 He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in… the Gentiles are fellow heirs, Gentile believers receive the same inheritance promised to God’s redeemed people: forgiveness, adoption, the Holy Spirit, resurrection life, and an eternal place in God’s kingdom. No ethnic distinction remains as a basis for access to God’s saving grace. The promise to Abraham that all families of the earth would be blessed reaches its fulfillment in Christ. Rom 8:17 And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God… fellow members of the body, Jews and Gentiles who believe in Christ belong to one Church, the body of Christ. Christ has removed the hostility created by sin and has made peace through His blood. The early church’s shared worship, fellowship, and service displayed a unity that crossed longstanding religious, social, and cultural divisions. 1Co 12:12-13 The body is a unit, though it is composed of many parts… and fellow partakers of the promise Gentile believers share fully in the blessings of the new covenant, including the gift and indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Eternal life belongs equally to all who trust in Christ, because salvation rests upon His faithfulness and sacrifice rather than ancestry, law-keeping, or human achievement. Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing… in Christ Jesus. Union with Christ is the source of this shared inheritance, unity, and promise. Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world, bringing into one redeemed people all who come to God through faith in Him. 2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.… I became a servant of this gospel Paul regarded his apostolic ministry as humble service under Christ’s authority, not as a personal achievement. The former persecutor of the church had been appointed to proclaim the very gospel he once opposed. His calling reflected Jesus’ teaching that true greatness is found in serving others, as the Son of Man came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:43–45). Col 1:23 if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm… by the gift of God’s grace, Paul’s ministry rested entirely on God’s undeserved favor. Grace had forgiven his rebellion, transformed his life, and entrusted him with the message of salvation. The gospel excludes boasting because both salvation and service come from God’s initiative, not human merit (Ephesians 2:8–9). Rom 15:15 However, I have written you a bold reminder on some points,… given me through the working of His power. God supplied the strength required for Paul’s calling. The power that raised Christ from the dead sustained Paul through opposition, suffering, imprisonment, and missionary labor. His ministry demonstrated that God equips those He calls and displays His strength through dependent servants. Col 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy… Though I am less than the least of all the saints, Paul remembered that he had once violently persecuted the church, ravaging believers before the risen Christ confronted him on the road to Damascus (Acts 8:3; 9:1–6; 1 Corinthians 15:9). His humility did not deny God’s work through him; it recognized that no apostolic calling rested on human merit. Saints are all who belong to Christ, set apart by God and joined together as His people. 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy… this grace was given me: God’s unmerited favor saved Paul and appointed him as an apostle to carry the gospel. The same grace that forgives sinners also equips servants for the work God assigns them. Paul’s ministry therefore displayed God’s sovereign power rather than personal ability. 1Co 3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation… to preach to the Gentiles The Lord specifically sent Paul beyond Israel to proclaim salvation to the nations (Acts 13:46–47; 22:21). Gentile inclusion fulfilled God’s promise that through Abraham’s offspring all nations would be blessed and Isaiah’s prophecy that the Servant would bring salvation to the ends of the earth (Genesis 12:3; Isaiah 49:6). In Christ, believing Jews and Gentiles are brought into one redeemed people. Gal 1:15-16 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb… the unsearchable riches of Christ, Christ possesses inexhaustible riches: forgiveness, reconciliation with God, righteousness, eternal life, and a secure inheritance for His people. God’s saving purpose, once hidden in earlier ages, has been revealed through Christ and proclaimed to all nations. Believers never exhaust the fullness of what God has provided in His Son. Rom 11:33 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge… and to illuminate for everyone Paul was commissioned to bring the light of the gospel to all peoples, revealing God’s saving purpose without distinction between Jew and Gentile. In Christ, those once far off are brought near and made members of one redeemed family. Jhn 1:9 The true Light, who gives light to everyone,… the stewardship of this mystery, God entrusted Paul with the administration of truth that had long been concealed. The mystery is that Gentiles who believe in Christ are fellow heirs with believing Jews, sharing the same promise and belonging to the same body. 1Co 4:1 So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ… which for ages past was kept hidden in God, God had purposed this salvation before the ages, though its fullness was not disclosed until the coming of Christ and the sending of the apostles. The unfolding plan demonstrates God’s sovereign wisdom and faithfulness throughout redemptive history. Col 1:26 the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations… who created all things. The Creator of the universe is also the Author of salvation and the One who directs history toward His appointed end. Through Christ, by whom all things were made, God begins a new creation in all who are reconciled to Him. Jhn 1:3 Through Him all things were made, and without Him,… His purpose was that now, In the age inaugurated by Christ’s death, resurrection, and exaltation, God’s redemptive plan has entered its appointed fulfillment. What was promised through the Law and the Prophets is openly displayed in the salvation of those who belong to Christ. Eph 1:9-10 And He has made known to us the mystery of His will… through the church, God has chosen the redeemed community of Jews and Gentiles united in Christ to display His saving work. The church is not merely an earthly organization; it is Christ’s body and the new humanity created by His reconciling sacrifice. 1Co 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you… the manifold wisdom of God God’s wisdom appears in the cross, where justice and mercy meet, sin is judged, and sinners are forgiven. It is also revealed in bringing former enemies together as one people under Christ’s rule. 1Co 2:7-10 No, we speak of the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God… should be made known The church makes God’s wisdom visible by proclaiming the gospel, living in holiness, preserving unity, and bearing witness to Christ among the nations. Its existence announces that God has fulfilled His promise to create a people for His name. Col 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles… to the rulers and authorities Spiritual powers, including hostile forces opposed to God, witness the triumph of Christ through His church. Christ has defeated the powers of darkness, and the gathering of redeemed people testifies that their rebellion will not overcome God’s purpose. Col 1:16 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven… in the heavenly realms, The church’s life and mission have consequences beyond the visible world. Ephesians presents salvation, Christ’s reign, and spiritual conflict as realities connected with heaven, where Christ reigns above every authority and power. Eph 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him… according to the eternal purpose God’s redemptive plan existed before creation and unfolds according to His sovereign will. The salvation of Jews and Gentiles in one body through Christ was not an afterthought but part of God’s settled purpose from eternity. 2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling… that He accomplished God has carried His purpose into history with perfect faithfulness. What He decreed, He brought to fulfillment through the death, resurrection, and exaltation of His Son. Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me… in Christ Jesus Jesus Christ (Jesus: “Yahweh saves”; Christ: “Anointed One”) stands at the center of God’s saving work. Through Him, sin is atoned for, believers are reconciled to God, and the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile is removed. 1Co 1:30 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus… our Lord. Jesus possesses divine authority over His people and over all creation. Believers confess Him not merely as a teacher or example, but as the risen Lord who rules, saves, and will bring God’s eternal purpose to its final completion. Rom 8:39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,… In Him Believers are united to Jesus Christ, sharing in the salvation, righteousness, and spiritual blessings secured by His death and resurrection. As the exalted Head of the Church, He brings His people into a living relationship with God. Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away… and through faith in Him Faith rests upon Christ (the Anointed One) alone rather than human merit or religious performance. By trusting His finished sacrifice and risen life, sinners receive the grace God freely gives. Rom 3:22 And this righteousness from God comes through faith… we may enter God’s presence Christ’s atoning blood has opened the way once barred by sin. The torn temple veil testified that access to God is no longer limited to a high priest or earthly sanctuary; all who belong to Christ may draw near. Heb 10:19-22 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter… with boldness and confidence. Assurance before God comes from Christ’s righteousness, not personal worthiness. Believers may approach the throne of grace freely, expecting mercy, help, and fellowship with their heavenly Father. Heb 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence… So I ask you not to be discouraged Paul wrote while imprisoned for the gospel, likely during his Roman confinement. Rather than drawing attention to his own hardship, he guarded the faith of the Ephesian believers, knowing that the suffering of a trusted apostle could unsettle them. God often strengthens His people through trials, producing steadfastness and proving that the advance of the gospel does not depend on ease or freedom. 2Co 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is… because of my sufferings for you, Paul’s imprisonment resulted from his calling to proclaim Christ among the Gentiles. His arrest followed opposition in Jerusalem connected with his ministry to Gentiles, and his appeals eventually brought him to Rome. The Ephesians had received the blessing of salvation because Paul willingly endured rejection, danger, and confinement in obedience to Christ. His sufferings reflected the pattern established by the Lord, who warned that His servants would face persecution as they carried His message into the world. Col 1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up… which are your glory. Paul’s afflictions served the spiritual honor and benefit of the Gentile churches because they confirmed that God’s promise had reached them fully. Through Christ, Gentile believers are fellow heirs with Jewish believers and members of the one body. Paul’s chains therefore testified that their inclusion in God’s redeemed people was worth costly sacrifice. Present suffering would not diminish God’s purpose but would lead to the final glory shared by all who belong to Christ. Rom 8:17-18 And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God…
Paul’s Prayer for the EphesiansPaul resumes the prayer begun in Ephesians 3:1 after explaining the mystery entrusted to him: Gentiles are fellow heirs with Israel in Christ and members of one body. God’s purpose is to unite His redeemed people under Christ, displaying His wisdom through the church. Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access to the Father… I bow my knees Kneeling expresses humility, reverence, and earnest dependence upon God. Though standing was a common Jewish posture for prayer, Paul’s posture reveals the weight of his intercession for believers to be strengthened in their inner being and established in Christ’s love. Act 20:36 When Paul had said this, he knelt down with all of them… before the Father, God receives His people as a Father through the saving work of His Son. His fatherhood includes authority, care, provision, discipline, and the secure belonging of all who have been brought into His household. Jhn 16:23 In that day you will no longer ask Me anything.… from whom God the Father stands as the source and sovereign Lord of all created life. Paul’s prayer rests on the truth that every creature owes its existence, order, and purpose to Him. 1Co 8:6 Yet for us there is but one God, the Father… every family God’s fatherhood extends over every household and people group He has made. In Christ, Jewish and Gentile believers are brought into one redeemed family without erasing the distinct places and callings God has given them. Psa 22:27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD… in heaven and on earth God’s authority embraces the unseen heavenly realm and the visible world of humanity. Angels, nations, households, and the church all exist beneath His throne and within His wise purpose. Eph 1:10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to bring all things… derives its name. Names in Scripture often reveal identity, calling, and belonging. Every family receives its place under the Father who knows His creatures perfectly, while those redeemed by Christ bear the special honor of belonging to God’s household. Isa 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says—He who created you…… I ask that out of the riches of His glory Paul grounds his prayer in the inexhaustible fullness of God’s own being. God’s glory reveals His holiness, majesty, and sovereign presence, displayed before Moses at Sinai and ultimately made known in Jesus Christ. The Lord does not strengthen His people from limited reserves; He supplies according to the abundance of His glory, as He promises to meet the needs of His people in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Rom 9:23 What if He did this to make the riches of His glory… He may strengthen you with power Believers need more than natural resolve to endure suffering, resist sin, serve faithfully, and remain rooted in hope. God supplies power for inward perseverance and obedience, not merely outward success. The risen Christ promised such power to His witnesses through the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8), enabling them to live and speak in a manner worthy of the gospel. Col 1:11 being strengthened with all power… through His Spirit The Holy Spirit personally applies God’s saving work to those who belong to Christ. He dwells in believers under the New Covenant, fulfilling God’s promise to place His Spirit within His people and move them toward obedience (Ezekiel 36:26–27). His presence gives illumination, conviction, comfort, and strength for holy living. Zec 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,… in your inner being, God’s work reaches the center of human life—the heart, mind, will, and affections. External religious activity cannot produce the renewal Paul seeks. The Spirit transforms believers from within, renewing their minds and shaping them into the likeness of Christ, so that steadfast faith and obedience arise from a heart increasingly governed by God’s truth. Rom 7:22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law. so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Paul prays that believers, strengthened by the Holy Spirit in their inner being, would know Christ’s abiding rule and fellowship at the center of life. Faith receives Christ not as a distant idea but as the living Savior whose presence reshapes desires, thoughts, choices, and affections. God once manifested His dwelling among Israel in the tabernacle and temple (Exodus 25:8; 1 Kings 8:27); through the New Covenant, Christ dwells in His people, who are being formed into God’s dwelling place by the Spirit (Ephesians 2:21–22). Such fellowship depends on continuing trust in Christ and His finished work, not on human merit. Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.… Then you, being rooted and grounded in love, Christ’s indwelling establishes believers in the love revealed at the cross. Like a deeply rooted tree, they receive nourishment and strength from God’s unfailing love; like a building on a firm foundation, they stand secure amid suffering, temptation, and spiritual conflict. Love for God and for one another becomes the settled atmosphere of the Christian life, reflecting the sacrificial love of Christ (John 15:13; 1 John 4:10). In a church composed of Jews and Gentiles, this love also preserves the unity Christ created through His death and enables believers to display His character before the world. Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith… will have power, God strengthens believers through the Holy Spirit so that they may receive and live in the realities revealed in Christ. Eph 1:19-20 and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe.… together with all the saints, Christ’s love is understood within the fellowship of God’s people, who are united as one body across every place and generation. 1Co 1:2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those called to be holy… to comprehend the length and width and height and depth The immeasurable dimensions point to the boundless love of Christ, which reaches every need, circumstance, and people. Nothing in creation lies beyond the scope of His redeeming purpose or outside the security of His love. Job 11:7-9 Can you fathom the deep things of God… of the love of Christ, Christ’s love stands at the heart of redemption. He loved His own to the uttermost, laying down His life for sinners and bearing the judgment deserved by them. His death fulfilled God’s purpose to reconcile Jews and Gentiles alike through the cross, creating one people in Him. Christ’s self-giving love not only secures salvation but also governs the life of His people, compelling them to love one another as He has loved them. Rom 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?… and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, Believers grow in a personal, Spirit-given awareness of a love too vast for finite minds to exhaust. Christ’s love reaches sinners in their rebellion, sustains them in suffering, forgives their failures, and preserves them for eternal glory. Paul prays for more than information about Christ; he seeks a deepening experience of His steadfast love through faith, prayer, obedience, and fellowship with the church. 1Jn 4:16-19 And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God… that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. God does not make believers divine, but He fills them with His presence and increasingly forms Christlike character within them. The Holy Spirit strengthens God’s people with His love, holiness, wisdom, and power so that their lives reflect the Lord who dwells in them. What God’s glory filled in the temple under the old covenant, He now accomplishes in His people, who together are His dwelling place through the Spirit. Col 2:9-10 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity… Now to Him who is able Paul concludes his prayer by directing all attention to God the Father, before whom he has bowed in Ephesians 3:14. The Creator who spoke the world into existence is never limited by human weakness, opposition, or circumstances. Jud 1:24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling… to do immeasurably more God’s works exceed every human measure. His purposes are not confined to what believers can foresee, just as He delivered Israel through the Red Sea and raised Jesus Christ bodily from the grave. Eph 1:19-21 and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe.… than all we ask or imagine, Prayer is rightly shaped by humility because God sees the whole of His redemptive plan while His people see only part. Paul has prayed for spiritual strength, Christ’s dwelling presence, rooted love, and fuller knowledge of Christ; God is able to answer these requests beyond the boundaries of human expectation. 1Ki 3:12-13 I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that… according to His power The power displayed in believers is the same divine power that raised Christ and seated Him above every authority (Ephesians 1:19–20). God’s abundance does not rest on human resolve or natural ability. Col 1:11 being strengthened with all power… that is at work within us, The Holy Spirit dwells in all who belong to Christ, renewing their hearts, producing holiness, strengthening them for witness, and building them together as one body. God’s power works personally within each believer and corporately within the church for the fulfillment of His purposes. Php 2:13 For it is God who works in you to will and to act… to Him be the glory God alone deserves honor for His saving work, power, wisdom, and grace. Paul’s praise follows his assurance that God is able to do far more than believers ask or imagine according to His power at work within them. All redemption begins with God and returns in praise to God. Rom 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.… in the church The gathered people of God display His grace before the world and the heavenly powers. Jews and Gentiles, once divided and alienated, are made one new people through the cross. The church bears witness to God’s wisdom as it proclaims Christ, meaning “Anointed One,” lives in holiness, and preserves the faith from generation to generation. Heb 2:12 He says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; …… and in Christ Jesus Jesus Christ is the supreme revelation of God’s glory. In His incarnation, obedient life, atoning death, resurrection, and exaltation, the Father’s holiness, justice, love, and mercy are made known. The church can glorify God only because it belongs to Christ and receives life from Him. 1Co 1:30-31 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus… throughout all generations, God’s purpose does not end with the apostles or the first-century church. Every generation is called to receive the gospel, teach God’s truth to its children, and join in the worship of the risen Christ. God remains faithful as human generations rise and pass away.
