1Then Jesus, full of [the] Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 1Ἰησοῦς δὲ πλήρης Πνεύματος Ἁγίου ὑπέστρεψεν ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ ἤγετο ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
2[where for] forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and [when] they had ended, He was hungry. 2ἡμέρας τεσσεράκοντα πειραζόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου Καὶ οὐκ ἔφαγεν οὐδὲν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις καὶ συντελεσθεισῶν αὐτῶν ἐπείνασεν
3The devil said to Him, “If You are [the] Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 3Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ διάβολος Εἰ Υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰπὲ τῷ λίθῳ τούτῳ ἵνα γένηται ἄρτος
4But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” 4Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Γέγραπται ὅτι Οὐκ ἐπ’ ἄρτῳ μόνῳ ζήσεται ὁ ἄνθρωπος ⧼ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ παντὶ ῥήματι θεοῦ⧽
5Then [the devil] led Him up to a high place [and] showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 5Καὶ ἀναγαγὼν αὐτὸν ⧼ὁ διάβολος εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν⧽ ἔδειξεν αὐτῷ πάσας τὰς βασιλείας τῆς οἰκουμένης ἐν στιγμῇ χρόνου
6“I will give You authority over all [these kingdoms] and [all] their glory,” [he] said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. 6καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ διάβολος Σοὶ δώσω τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἅπασαν καὶ τὴν δόξαν αὐτῶν ὅτι ἐμοὶ παραδέδοται καὶ ᾧ ἐὰν θέλω δίδωμι αὐτήν
7So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.” 7σὺ οὖν ἐὰν προσκυνήσῃς ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ ἔσται σοῦ πᾶσα
8But Jesus replied, “It is written: ‘Worship [the] Lord your God and serve Him only.’” 8Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Γέγραπται Προσκυνήσεις «Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου» καὶ αὐτῷ μόνῳ λατρεύσεις
9Then [the devil] led Him to Jerusalem and set [Him] on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are [the] Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. 9Ἤγαγεν δὲ αὐτὸν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ ἔστησεν ἐπὶ τὸ πτερύγιον τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εἰ Υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ βάλε σεαυτὸν ἐντεῦθεν κάτω
10For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully; 10γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι Τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ ἐντελεῖται περὶ σοῦ τοῦ διαφυλάξαι σε
11and they will lift You [up] in [their] hands, so that {You will} not strike Your foot against a stone.’” 11καὶ ὅτι ἐπὶ χειρῶν ἀροῦσίν σε μή‿ ποτε προσκόψῃς πρὸς λίθον τὸν πόδα σου
12But Jesus declared, “It [also] says, ‘Do not put [the] Lord your God {to the test}.’” 12Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Εἴρηται Οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου
13When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. 13Καὶ συντελέσας πάντα πειρασμὸν ὁ διάβολος ἀπέστη ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἄχρι καιροῦ
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and [the] news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. 14Καὶ ὑπέστρεψεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ Πνεύματος εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ φήμη ἐξῆλθεν καθ’ ὅλης τῆς περιχώρου περὶ αὐτοῦ
15He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone. 15καὶ αὐτὸς ἐδίδασκεν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν δοξαζόμενος ὑπὸ πάντων
16Then [Jesus] came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And [when] He stood up to read, 16Καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ναζαρά οὗ ἦν τεθραμμένος καὶ εἰσῆλθεν κατὰ τὸ εἰωθὸς αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν καὶ ἀνέστη ἀναγνῶναι
17[the] scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling [it], He found the place where it was written: 17καὶ ἐπεδόθη αὐτῷ βιβλίον τοῦ προφήτου Ἠσαΐου καὶ ἀναπτύξας* τὸ βιβλίον εὗρεν τὸν τόπον οὗ ἦν γεγραμμένον
18“[The] Spirit of [the] Lord [is] on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to [the] poor. He has sent Me to proclaim deliverance to [the] captives and recovery of sight to [the] blind, to release [the] oppressed, 18Πνεῦμα Κυρίου ἐπ’ ἐμέ Οὗ εἵνεκεν ἔχρισέν με Εὐαγγελίσασθαι πτωχοῖς Ἀπέσταλκέν με ⧼ἰάσασθαι τοὺς συντετριμμένους τὴν καρδίαν⧽ κηρῦξαι αἰχμαλώτοις ἄφεσιν Καὶ τυφλοῖς ἀνάβλεψιν Ἀποστεῖλαι τεθραυσμένους ἐν ἀφέσει
19to proclaim [the] year of [the] Lord’s favor.” 19Κηρῦξαι ἐνιαυτὸν Κυρίου δεκτόν
20Then He rolled up the scroll, returned [it] to the attendant, [and] sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him, 20Καὶ πτύξας τὸ βιβλίον ἀποδοὺς τῷ ὑπηρέτῃ ἐκάθισεν καὶ πάντων οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἦσαν ἀτενίζοντες αὐτῷ
21and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 21ἤρξατο δὲ λέγειν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Σήμερον πεπλήρωται ἡ γραφὴ αὕτη ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ὑμῶν
22All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked. 22Καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλεγον Οὐχὶ υἱός ἐστιν Ἰωσὴφ οὗτος
23[Jesus] said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard [that] You did in Capernaum.’” 23Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Πάντως ἐρεῖτέ μοι τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην Ἰατρέ θεράπευσον σεαυτόν ὅσα ἠκούσαμεν γενόμενα εἰς τὴν Καφαρναοὺμ ποίησον καὶ ὧδε ἐν τῇ πατρίδι σου
24Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 24Εἶπεν δέ Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδεὶς προφήτης δεκτός ἐστιν ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ
25But I tell you truthfully [that] there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years [and] great famine swept over all the land. 25ἐπ’ ἀληθείας δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν πολλαὶ χῆραι ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἠλίου ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ ὅτε ἐκλείσθη ὁ οὐρανὸς ἐπὶ ἔτη τρία καὶ μῆνας ἕξ ὡς ἐγένετο λιμὸς μέγας ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν
26Yet Elijah was [not] sent to [any] of them, but to [the] widow of Zarephath in Sidon. 26καὶ πρὸς οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν ἐπέμφθη Ἠλίας εἰ μὴ εἰς Σάρεπτα τῆς Σιδωνίας πρὸς γυναῖκα χήραν
27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed— only Naaman the Syrian.” 27καὶ πολλοὶ λεπροὶ ἦσαν ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπὶ Ἐλισαίου τοῦ προφήτου καὶ οὐδεὶς αὐτῶν ἐκαθαρίσθη εἰ μὴ Ναιμὰν ὁ Σύρος
28On hearing [this], all [the people] in the synagogue were enraged. 28Καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν πάντες θυμοῦ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἀκούοντες ταῦτα
29They got up, drove Him out of [the] town, and led Him to [the] brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff. 29καὶ ἀναστάντες ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἕως ὀφρύος τοῦ ὄρους ἐφ’ οὗ ἡ πόλις ᾠκοδόμητο αὐτῶν ὥστε κατακρημνίσαι αὐτόν
30But [Jesus] passed through [the crowd] [and] went on His way. 30αὐτὸς δὲ διελθὼν διὰ μέσου αὐτῶν ἐπορεύετο
31Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach [the people]. 31Καὶ κατῆλθεν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἦν διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ἐν τοῖς σάββασιν
32They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority. 32καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ ἦν ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ
33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by [the] spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice, 33Καὶ ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ ἦν ἄνθρωπος ἔχων πνεῦμα δαιμονίου ἀκαθάρτου καὶ ἀνέκραξεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ
34“Ha! What do You [want] with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are, the Holy [One] of God!” 34Ἔα τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς οἶδά σε τίς εἶ ὁ Ἅγιος τοῦ Θεοῦ
35[But] Jesus rebuked [the demon]. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw [the man] down before them all [and] came out without harming him. 35Καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων Φιμώθητι καὶ ἔξελθε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ῥίψαν αὐτὸν τὸ δαιμόνιον εἰς τὸ μέσον ἐξῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ μηδὲν βλάψαν αὐτόν
36All [the people] were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What [is] this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 36Καὶ ἐγένετο θάμβος ἐπὶ πάντας καὶ συνελάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες Τίς ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὅτι ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ καὶ δυνάμει ἐπιτάσσει τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις πνεύμασιν καὶ ἐξέρχονται
37And the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. 37καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο ἦχος περὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς πάντα τόπον τῆς περιχώρου
38[Jesus] left the synagogue [and] went to the home of Simon, [whose] mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. They appealed to [Jesus] on her [behalf], 38Ἀναστὰς δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς συναγωγῆς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος πενθερὰ δὲ τοῦ Σίμωνος ἦν συνεχομένη πυρετῷ μεγάλῳ καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν περὶ αὐτῆς
39and He stood over her [and] rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once [and] began to serve them. 39καὶ ἐπιστὰς ἐπάνω αὐτῆς ἐπετίμησεν τῷ πυρετῷ καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτήν παραχρῆμα δὲ ἀναστᾶσα διηκόνει αὐτοῖς
40At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to [Jesus], and laying [His] hands on each one, He healed them. 40Δύνοντος δὲ τοῦ ἡλίου ἅπαντες ὅσοι εἶχον ἀσθενοῦντας νόσοις ποικίλαις ἤγαγον αὐτοὺς πρὸς αὐτόν ὁ δὲ ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ αὐτῶν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπιτιθεὶς ἐθεράπευεν αὐτούς
41Demons also came out of many [people], shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked [ the demons ] [and] would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ. 41ἐξήρχετο δὲ καὶ δαιμόνια ἀπὸ πολλῶν κραυγάζοντα καὶ λέγοντα ὅτι Σὺ εἶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἐπιτιμῶν οὐκ εἴα αὐτὰ λαλεῖν ὅτι ᾔδεισαν τὸν Χριστὸν αὐτὸν εἶναι
42At daybreak, [Jesus] went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him [from] leaving. 42Γενομένης δὲ ἡμέρας ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη εἰς ἔρημον τόπον καὶ οἱ ὄχλοι ἐπεζήτουν αὐτόν καὶ ἦλθον ἕως αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεῖχον αὐτὸν τοῦ μὴ πορεύεσθαι ἀπ’ αὐτῶν
43But [Jesus] told them, “I must preach [the] good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.” 43ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι Καὶ ταῖς ἑτέραις πόλεσιν εὐαγγελίσασθαί με δεῖ τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅτι ἐπὶ τοῦτο ἀπεστάλην
44And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. 44Καὶ ἦν κηρύσσων εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς τῆς Ἰουδαίας
