Jesus,

returned

Jordan
and
was led
by

Spirit
into
the
wilderness,

[where for] forty
days
He was tempted
by
the
devil.
He ate
nothing
during
those
days,
and
[when] they
had ended,
He was hungry.

ἡμέρας
τεσσεράκοντα
πειραζόμενος
ὑπὸ
τοῦ
διαβόλου
Καὶ
οὐκ
ἔφαγεν
οὐδὲν
ἐν
ταῖς
ἡμέραις

The
devil
said
to Him,
“If
You are
[the] Son
of God,
tell
this
stone
to
become
bread.”

Εἶπεν

Υἱὸς
εἶ
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
εἰπὲ
τῷ
λίθῳ
τούτῳ
ἵνα
γένηται
ἄρτος

But
Jesus
answered,
“It is written:
‘Man
shall not live
on
bread
alone.’”

ἐπ’
ἄρτῳ
μόνῳ
ζήσεται
ὁ

παντὶ

Then
[the devil] led Him up to a high place
[and] showed
Him
in
an instant
all
the
kingdoms
of the
world.

Καὶ
ἀναγαγὼν
αὐτὸν
⧼ὁ
διάβολος
εἰς
ὄρος
ὑψηλὸν⧽
ἔδειξεν
αὐτῷ
πάσας
τὰς
βασιλείας
τῆς
οἰκουμένης
ἐν
στιγμῇ
χρόνου

“I will give
You
authority
over all
[these kingdoms]
and [all]
their
glory,”
[he]
said.
“For
it has been relinquished
to me,
and
I can give
it
to anyone
I wish.

καὶ
εἶπεν
αὐτῷ
ὁ

Σοὶ
δώσω
τὴν
ἐξουσίαν
ταύτην
ἅπασαν
καὶ
τὴν
δόξαν
αὐτῶν
ὅτι
ἐμοὶ
παραδέδοται
καὶ
ᾧ
ἐὰν
θέλω
δίδωμι
αὐτήν

So
if
You
worship
me,
it will all be
Yours.”

σὺ
οὖν
ἐὰν
προσκυνήσῃς
ἐνώπιον
ἐμοῦ
ἔσται
σοῦ
πᾶσα
8
But
Jesus
replied,
“It is written:
‘Worship
[the] Lord
your
God
and
serve
Him
only.’”

Καὶ
ἀποκριθεὶς
ὁ
Ἰησοῦς
εἶπεν
αὐτῷ
Γέγραπται
Προσκυνήσεις
«Κύριον
τὸν
Θεόν
σου»
καὶ
αὐτῷ
μόνῳ
λατρεύσεις

Then
[the devil] led
Him
to
Jerusalem
and
set [Him]
on
the
pinnacle
of the
temple.
“If
You are
[the] Son
of God,”
he said,
“throw
Yourself
down
from here.

Ἤγαγεν
δὲ
αὐτὸν
εἰς
Ἰερουσαλὴμ
καὶ
ἔστησεν
ἐπὶ
τὸ
πτερύγιον
τοῦ
ἱεροῦ
καὶ
εἶπεν
αὐτῷ
Εἰ
Υἱὸς
εἶ
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
βάλε
σεαυτὸν
ἐντεῦθεν
κάτω

For
it is written:
‘He will command
His
angels
concerning
You
to guard You carefully;
10
γέγραπται
γὰρ
ὅτι
Τοῖς
ἀγγέλοις
αὐτοῦ
ἐντελεῖται
περὶ
σοῦ
τοῦ
διαφυλάξαι
σε
11
and
they will lift
You [up]
in
[their] hands,
so that {You will} not
strike
Your
foot
against
a stone.’”

καὶ
ὅτι
ἐπὶ
χειρῶν
ἀροῦσίν
σε
μή‿
ποτε
προσκόψῃς
πρὸς
λίθον
τὸν
πόδα
σου
12
But
Jesus
declared,
“It [also] says,
‘Do not put
[the] Lord
your
God {to the test}.’”

Καὶ
ἀποκριθεὶς
εἶπεν
αὐτῷ
ὁ
Ἰησοῦς
ὅτι
Εἴρηται
Οὐκ
ἐκπειράσεις
Κύριον
τὸν
Θεόν
σου

When
the
devil
had finished
every
temptation,
he left
Him
until
an opportune time.

Καὶ
συντελέσας
πάντα
πειρασμὸν
ὁ
διάβολος
ἀπέστη
ἀπ’
αὐτοῦ
ἄχρι
καιροῦ

Jesus
returned
to
Galilee
in
the
power
of the
Spirit,
and
[the] news
about
Him
spread
throughout
the
surrounding region.

Καὶ
ὑπέστρεψεν
ὁ
Ἰησοῦς
ἐν
τῇ
δυνάμει
τοῦ
Πνεύματος
εἰς
τὴν
Γαλιλαίαν
καὶ
φήμη
ἐξῆλθεν
καθ’

He
taught
in
their
synagogues
and was glorified
by
everyone.

καὶ
αὐτὸς
ἐδίδασκεν
ἐν
ταῖς

αὐτῶν
δοξαζόμενος
ὑπὸ
πάντων

Then
[Jesus] came
to
Nazareth,
where
He had been
brought up.
As was
His
custom,
He entered
the
synagogue
on
the
Sabbath.
And [when]
He stood up
to read,

εἰωθὸς

[the] scroll of
the
prophet
Isaiah
was handed
to Him.
Unrolling
[it],
He found
the
place
where
it was
written:

ἐπεδόθη
αὐτῷ
βιβλίον
τοῦ
προφήτου
Ἠσαΐου
καὶ
ἀναπτύξας*
τὸ
βιβλίον
εὗρεν
τὸν
τόπον
οὗ
ἦν
γεγραμμένον

“[The] Spirit
of [the] Lord [is]
on
Me,
because
He has anointed
Me
to preach good news
to [the] poor.
He has sent
Me
to proclaim
deliverance
to [the] captives
and
recovery of sight
to [the] blind,
to release
[the] oppressed,

to proclaim
[the] year
of [the] Lord’s
favor.”

Then
He rolled up
the
scroll,
returned [it]
to the
attendant,
[and] sat down.
The
eyes
of everyone
in
the
synagogue
were
fixed on
Him,

Καὶ
πτύξας
τὸ
βιβλίον
ἀποδοὺς
τῷ
ὑπηρέτῃ
ἐκάθισεν
καὶ
πάντων
οἱ
ὀφθαλμοὶ
ἐν
τῇ
συναγωγῇ
ἦσαν
ἀτενίζοντες
αὐτῷ

and
He began
by saying,
“Today
this
Scripture
is fulfilled
in
your
hearing.”

ἤρξατο
δὲ
λέγειν
πρὸς
αὐτοὺς
ὅτι
Σήμερον
πεπλήρωται
ἡ
γραφὴ
αὕτη
ἐν
τοῖς
ὠσὶν
ὑμῶν

All
spoke well
of Him
and
marveled
at
the
gracious
words
that
came
from
His
lips.
“Isn’t
this
the son
of Joseph?”
they asked.

Καὶ
πάντες
ἐμαρτύρουν
αὐτῷ
καὶ
ἐθαύμαζον
ἐπὶ
τοῖς
λόγοις
τῆς
χάριτος
τοῖς
ἐκπορευομένοις
ἐκ
τοῦ
στόματος
αὐτοῦ
καὶ
ἔλεγον
Οὐχὶ
υἱός
ἐστιν
Ἰωσὴφ
οὗτος

[Jesus] said
to
them,
“Surely
you will quote
this
proverb
to Me:
‘Physician,
heal
yourself!
Do
here
in
Your
hometown
what
we have heard [that]
You did
in
Capernaum.’”

Καὶ
εἶπεν
πρὸς
αὐτούς
Πάντως
ἐρεῖτέ
μοι
τὴν
παραβολὴν
ταύτην
Ἰατρέ
θεράπευσον
σεαυτόν
ὅσα
ἠκούσαμεν
γενόμενα
εἰς
τὴν
Καφαρναοὺμ
ποίησον
καὶ
ὧδε
ἐν
τῇ
πατρίδι
σου

Then
He added,
“Truly
I tell
you,
no
prophet
is
accepted
in
his
hometown.

Εἶπεν
δέ
Ἀμὴν
λέγω
ὑμῖν
ὅτι
οὐδεὶς
προφήτης
δεκτός
ἐστιν
ἐν
τῇ
πατρίδι
αὐτοῦ
25
But
I tell
you
truthfully [that]
there were
many
widows
in
Israel
in
the
time
of Elijah,
when
the
sky
was shut
for
three
and
a half
years
[and]
great
famine
swept
over
all
the
land.

ἐπ’
ἀληθείας
δὲ
λέγω
ὑμῖν
πολλαὶ
χῆραι
ἦσαν
ἐν
ταῖς
ἡμέραις
Ἠλίου
ἐν
τῷ
Ἰσραήλ
ὅτε
ἐκλείσθη
ὁ
οὐρανὸς
ἐπὶ
ἔτη
τρία
καὶ
μῆνας
ἕξ
ὡς
ἐγένετο
λιμὸς
μέγας
ἐπὶ
πᾶσαν
τὴν
γῆν

Yet
Elijah
was [not] sent
to
[any]
of them,
but
to
[the] widow
of Zarephath
in Sidon.

καὶ
πρὸς
οὐδεμίαν
αὐτῶν
ἐπέμφθη
Ἠλίας
εἰ
μὴ
εἰς
Σάρεπτα
τῆς
Σιδωνίας
πρὸς
γυναῖκα
χήραν
27
And
there were
many
lepers
in
Israel
in the time
of Elisha
the
prophet.
Yet
not one
of them
was cleansed—
only
Naaman
the
Syrian.”

πολλοὶ
λεπροὶ

ἐν
τῷ
Ἰσραὴλ
ἐπὶ
Ἐλισαίου
τοῦ
προφήτου
καὶ
οὐδεὶς
αὐτῶν
ἐκαθαρίσθη
εἰ
μὴ
Ναιμὰν
ὁ
Σύρος

On hearing
[this],
all [the people]
in
the
synagogue
were enraged.

Καὶ
ἐπλήσθησαν
πάντες
θυμοῦ
ἐν
τῇ
συναγωγῇ
ἀκούοντες
ταῦτα

They got up,
drove
Him
out
of
[the] town,
and
led
Him
to
[the] brow
of the
hill
on
which
the
town
was built,
in order
to throw Him over the cliff.

καὶ
ἀναστάντες
ἐξέβαλον
αὐτὸν
ἔξω
τῆς
πόλεως
καὶ
ἤγαγον
αὐτὸν
ἕως
ὀφρύος
τοῦ
ὄρους
ἐφ’
οὗ
ἡ
πόλις
ᾠκοδόμητο
αὐτῶν
ὥστε
κατακρημνίσαι
αὐτόν

But
[Jesus]
passed
through
[the crowd]
[and] went on His way.

αὐτὸς
δὲ
διελθὼν
διὰ
μέσου
αὐτῶν
ἐπορεύετο

Then
He went down
to
Capernaum,
a town
in Galilee,
and
on
the
Sabbath
He began
to teach
[the people].

Καὶ
κατῆλθεν
εἰς
Καφαρναοὺμ
πόλιν
τῆς
Γαλιλαίας
καὶ
ἦν
διδάσκων
αὐτοὺς
ἐν
τοῖς
σάββασιν

They were astonished
at
His
teaching,
because
His
message
had
authority.

καὶ
ἐξεπλήσσοντο
ἐπὶ
τῇ
διδαχῇ
αὐτοῦ
ὅτι
ἐν
ἐξουσίᾳ
ἦν
ὁ
λόγος
αὐτοῦ

In
the
synagogue
there was
a man
possessed by
[the] spirit
of an unclean
demon.
He cried out
in a loud
voice,

Καὶ
ἐν
τῇ
συναγωγῇ
ἦν
ἄνθρωπος
ἔχων
πνεῦμα
δαιμονίου
ἀκαθάρτου
καὶ
ἀνέκραξεν
φωνῇ
μεγάλῃ

“Ha!
What
do You [want]
with us,
Jesus
of Nazareth?
Have You come
to destroy
us?
I know
who
You
are,
the
Holy [One]
of God!”

Ἔα

[But]
Jesus
rebuked
[the demon].
“Be silent!”
He said.
“Come
out of
him!”
Then
the
demon
threw [the man] down
before
them all
[and] came out
without
harming
him.

ἐπετίμησεν
αὐτῷ
ὁ
Ἰησοῦς
λέγων
Φιμώθητι
καὶ
ἔξελθε
ἀπ’
αὐτοῦ
καὶ
ῥίψαν
αὐτὸν
τὸ
δαιμόνιον
εἰς
τὸ
μέσον
ἐξῆλθεν
ἀπ’
αὐτοῦ
μηδὲν
βλάψαν
αὐτόν

All [the people]
were overcome
with amazement
and
asked
one another,
“What
[is] this
message?
With
authority
and
power
He commands
the
unclean
spirits,
and
they come out!”

συνελάλουν
πρὸς
ἀλλήλους

And
the news
about
Him
spread
throughout
the
surrounding region.

ἐξεπορεύετο
ἦχος
περὶ
αὐτοῦ
εἰς
πάντα
τόπον
τῆς
περιχώρου

[Jesus] left
the
synagogue
[and] went
to
the
home
of Simon,
[whose]
mother-in-law
was
suffering from
a high
fever.
They appealed
to [Jesus]
on
her [behalf],

Ἀναστὰς

ἀπὸ
τῆς
συναγωγῆς
εἰσῆλθεν
εἰς
τὴν
οἰκίαν
Σίμωνος
πενθερὰ
δὲ
τοῦ
Σίμωνος
ἦν
συνεχομένη
πυρετῷ
μεγάλῳ
καὶ
ἠρώτησαν
αὐτὸν
περὶ
αὐτῆς

and
He stood
over
her
[and] rebuked
the
fever,
and
it left
her.
And
she got up
at once
[and] began to serve
them.

ἐπιστὰς
ἐπάνω
αὐτῆς
ἐπετίμησεν
τῷ
πυρετῷ
καὶ
ἀφῆκεν
αὐτήν
παραχρῆμα
δὲ
ἀναστᾶσα
διηκόνει
αὐτοῖς

At sunset,
all
who were
ill
with various
diseases
were brought
to
[Jesus],
and
laying
[His]
hands
on each
one,
He healed
them.

Δύνοντος
δὲ
τοῦ
ἡλίου
ἅπαντες
ὅσοι
εἶχον
ἀσθενοῦντας
νόσοις
ποικίλαις
ἤγαγον
αὐτοὺς
πρὸς
αὐτόν
ὁ
δὲ
ἑνὶ
ἑκάστῳ
αὐτῶν
τὰς
χεῖρας
ἐπιτιθεὶς
ἐθεράπευεν
αὐτούς

Demons
also
came out
of
many [people],
shouting,
“You
are
the
Son
of God!”
But
He rebuked [ the demons ]
[and] would not allow
them
to speak,
because
they knew
He
was
the
Christ.

ἐξήρχετο
δὲ
καὶ
δαιμόνια
ἀπὸ
πολλῶν
κραυγάζοντα
καὶ
λέγοντα
ὅτι
Σὺ
εἶ
ὁ
Υἱὸς
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
καὶ
ἐπιτιμῶν
οὐκ
εἴα
αὐτὰ
λαλεῖν
ὅτι
ᾔδεισαν
τὸν
Χριστὸν
αὐτὸν
εἶναι

At daybreak,
[Jesus] went out
to
a solitary
place,
and
the
crowds
were looking for
Him.
They came
to
Him
and
tried to keep
Him
[from]
leaving.

Γενομένης
δὲ
ἡμέρας
ἐξελθὼν
ἐπορεύθη
εἰς
ἔρημον
τόπον
καὶ
οἱ
ὄχλοι
ἐπεζήτουν
αὐτόν
καὶ
ἦλθον
ἕως
αὐτοῦ
καὶ
κατεῖχον
αὐτὸν
τοῦ
μὴ
πορεύεσθαι
ἀπ’
αὐτῶν

But
[Jesus] told
them,
“I
must
preach [the] good news
of the
kingdom
of God
to the
other
towns
as well,
because
that is why
I was sent.”

εὐαγγελίσασθαί

δεῖ

And
He continued
to preach
in
the
synagogues
of Judea.
