Endow the King with Your Justice

Of Solomon.

Solomon, David’s son and successor, ruled during Israel’s united monarchy, a period marked by peace, prosperity, and the building of the temple in Jerusalem. The psalm presents the ideal of a king whose rule reflects God’s character and covenant purposes for Israel.

1Ki 3:9-12 Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart…
1Ki 10:23-24 So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth…
Pro 1:1 These are the proverbs of Solomon son of David,…

Endow the king with Your justice, O God,

Israel’s king was accountable to God and called to govern according to His law. The prayer seeks a ruler who protects the weak, judges impartially, and maintains order throughout the land.

2Sa 23:3-4 The God of Israel spoke; the Rock of Israel said to me, …
Pro 16:12 Wicked behavior is detestable for kings,…
Isa 11:3-4 And He will delight in the fear of the LORD.…

and the son of the king with Your righteousness.

The request includes the royal heir, expressing hope for an enduring Davidic line marked by faithful leadership. The promise finds its fullest fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, whose reign is perfectly just and righteous.

2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
Jer 23:5-6 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Isa 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given,…

May he judge Your people with righteousness

The king is called to govern as God’s appointed servant, administering the law impartially and ruling in a manner consistent with God’s holy character. His authority is measured not by power or wealth but by his commitment to what is right.

2Sa 8:15 Thus David reigned over all Israel and administered justice…
1Ki 10:9 Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you.…
Psa 9:8 He judges the world with justice; He governs the people…

and Your afflicted with justice.

God identifies the poor and oppressed as His own people, placing them under the king’s protection. A faithful ruler must restrain exploitation, defend the vulnerable, and ensure that justice reaches those least able to secure it for themselves.

Psa 82:3-4 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;…
Isa 11:4 but with righteousness He will judge the poor…
Psa 140:12 I know that the LORD upholds justice for the poor…

May the mountains bring peace to the people,

Mountains and hills formed the prominent landscape of Israel and often represented the strength and security of the land. The prayer asks that the king’s righteous rule bring peace and prosperity throughout the nation, reaching even its highest places. Peace includes safety from enemies, order within the kingdom, and the well-being of the people under God’s blessing.

Isa 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those…
Isa 2:2-4 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…
Mic 4:1-4 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…

and the hills bring righteousness.

Righteousness describes just government, faithful obedience to God’s standards, and fair treatment of the vulnerable. Under the ideal king, justice would spread through every part of the land, producing the peace for which the people prayed.

Isa 32:16-17 Then justice will inhabit the wilderness,…
Psa 85:10-13 Loving devotion and faithfulness have joined together;…
Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its growth, …

May he vindicate the afflicted among the people;

The king is called to uphold justice for those unable to secure it for themselves, including the poor, widows, orphans, and others burdened by oppression. Israel’s ruler was accountable before God to protect the vulnerable and judge their cases righteously.

Psa 82:3-4 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;…
Isa 1:17 Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the oppressor.…
Pro 31:8-9 Open your mouth for those with no voice,…

may he save the children of the needy

Children of impoverished families were especially exposed to hunger, exploitation, and abandonment. A righteous king would provide protection and relief, ensuring that the weak were not forgotten or treated as disposable.

Psa 37:25-26 I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen…
Isa 49:25 Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Even the captives…
Job 5:15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth…

and crush the oppressor.

Justice requires more than compassion for victims; it also demands the restraint and punishment of those who abuse power. The king is expected to confront oppressors decisively, removing the forces that bring suffering upon the needy.

Psa 10:15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account…
Hab 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people…
Psa 68:21 Surely God will crush the heads of His enemies…

May they fear him

The righteous king is to be honored with reverence because he rules under God’s authority and administers justice for the people. In its fullest sense, the petition looks beyond Solomon to the Messiah, whose righteous rule rightly commands enduring submission.

Psa 67:7 God blesses us, that all the ends of the earth…
Deu 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths…
Deu 10:20 You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him.…

as long as the sun shines,

The regular course of the sun portrays a reign marked by permanence and stability. Israel’s hope for David’s royal line rested on God’s promise of an everlasting kingdom, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

Psa 89:36 his offspring shall endure forever, and his throne before Me…
Psa 113:3 From where the sun rises to where it sets…
Ecc 1:5 The sun rises and the sun sets; it hurries back…

as long as the moon remains,

The moon’s continual presence reinforces the picture of an unbroken kingdom extending through every age. Unlike earthly rulers, whose reigns end in death, the promised King’s dominion does not diminish.

Psa 89:37 like the moon, established forever, a faithful witness…
Gen 1:16 God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day…
Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons…

through all generations.

The prayer anticipates blessings that would reach far beyond one generation of Israel. Jesus, the Son of David, fulfills the hope of a kingdom that endures forever.

Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures…
Psa 145:13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion…
Exo 3:15 God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites,…

May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass,

Rain on newly mown fields brought quick refreshment to the land and was essential to Israel’s crops and livestock. The image portrays the ideal king as one whose righteous rule restores strength, relieves oppression, and promotes the well-being of his people.

Deu 32:2 Let my teaching fall like rain and my speech settle like dew…
Psa 147:8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain…
2Sa 23:4 is like the light of the morning at sunrise…

like spring showers that water the earth.

The spring rains helped bring grain and fruit crops to maturity, making them a fitting picture of God’s faithful provision. The king’s just administration is expected to produce peace, stability, and prosperity throughout the nation, ultimately anticipating the perfect reign of the Messiah.

Hos 6:3 So let us know—let us press on to know the LORD.…
Jol 2:23 Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD…
Jer 5:24 They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD…

May the righteous flourish in his days

The reign of the promised king brings security and justice, allowing those who fear God and live faithfully to prosper. Solomon’s early reign gave a partial picture of such order, but the psalm ultimately looks beyond him to the greater King whose rule is perfectly righteous.

Psa 92:12-14 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree…
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…
Psa 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,…

and prosperity abound

Peace extends through the land as conflict, oppression, and disorder give way to well-being and stability. The people enjoy the blessings of a kingdom governed according to God’s justice.

Deu 28:11 The LORD will make you prosper abundantly…
Jer 33:6 Nevertheless, I will bring to it health and healing…
Psa 65:11 You crown the year with Your bounty, and Your paths overflow…

until the moon is no more.

The king’s righteous rule is not temporary. Its peace endures beyond the ordinary limits of human kingdoms, anticipating the eternal reign of the Messiah.

Isa 60:19-20 No longer will the sun be your light by day,…
Rev 21:23-25 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it…
Psa 89:37 like the moon, established forever, a faithful witness…

May he rule from sea to sea,

The king’s dominion is portrayed as extending across the full breadth of the land, from the western sea to the eastern boundaries. Solomon’s kingdom approached this ideal in its prosperity and influence, yet the scope described reaches beyond any merely earthly reign.

Zec 9:10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim…
Psa 89:25 I will set his hand over the sea, and his right hand…
Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…

and from the Euphrates

The Euphrates marked the northeastern extent of the territory promised to Abraham and later associated with Israel’s imperial boundaries. Rule reaching to this river signifies authority over surrounding peoples, trade routes, and lands beyond Israel.

Gen 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…
Exo 23:31 And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea……
Deu 11:24 Every place where the sole of your foot treads…

to the ends of the earth.

The prayer looks beyond Israel to a kingdom recognized among all nations. Its fullest fulfillment belongs to Christ, the Son of David, whose reign will ultimately encompass the whole earth.

Psa 2:8 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,…
Mic 5:4 He will stand and shepherd His flock in the strength…
Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…

May the nomads bow before him,

Even the desert tribes beyond the settled centers of Israel and the surrounding kingdoms will acknowledge the king’s rule. His authority reaches the distant peoples often regarded as independent and difficult to govern.

Isa 45:14 This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt…
Isa 60:14 The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you;…
Isa 45:23 By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth,…

and his enemies lick the dust.

His opponents will be utterly humbled before him, pictured as fallen with their faces to the ground. The king’s righteous dominion brings rebellion to an end and establishes peace under God’s appointed ruler.

Isa 49:23 Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens…
Mic 7:17 They will lick the dust like a snake, like reptiles…
Gen 3:14 the LORD God said to the serpent: Because you have done this…

May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute;

Tarshish was a wealthy maritime trading center, likely in the western Mediterranean, known for metals and commercial prosperity. Its kings, along with rulers from remote coastlands, represent nations beyond Israel’s immediate borders acknowledging the king’s rule.

Isa 60:9 Surely the islands will wait for Me, with the ships of…
1Ki 4:21 And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms…
1Ki 10:25 Year after year, each visitor would bring his tribute:…

may the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.

Sheba, in southern Arabia, was renowned for trade in spices, gold, and precious goods; its queen’s visit to Solomon displayed honor for Israel’s king and his God-given wisdom. Seba, likely in northeastern Africa, further broadens the picture of distant rulers bringing gifts in recognition of a kingdom whose glory points beyond Solomon to the Messiah’s universal reign.

Isa 60:6 Caravans of camels will cover your land,…
1Ki 10:1-2 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame…
Isa 43:3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel,…

May all kings bow down to him

Psalm 72 was written for Solomon’s reign, yet its full scope reaches beyond any earthly king to the promised Messiah. Kings in the ancient world claimed great power and often received honor from their subjects; their bowing depicts willing submission to a ruler greater than themselves. The Messiah will reign with authority, righteousness, and justice over every ruler.

Isa 49:23 Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens…
Isa 49:7 Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel,…
Psa 2:10-12 Therefore be wise, O kings; be admonished…

and all nations serve him.

Israel stood among powerful surrounding kingdoms, making the prospect of worldwide service especially striking. Solomon’s kingdom foreshadowed a greater kingdom in which the Messiah’s rule extends to every people and land. The nations will recognize His rightful dominion and serve Him under a reign marked by peace, justice, and blessing.

Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…
Zep 3:9 For then I will restore pure lips to the peoples,…
Isa 60:12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you…

For he will deliver the needy who cry out

The righteous king hears the pleas of the poor and acts to rescue them. Israel’s king was responsible to administer justice and protect those unable to defend themselves, reflecting God’s care for the oppressed. This righteous rule anticipates Christ, who showed compassion toward the suffering and answered those who sought His help.

Job 29:12 because I rescued the poor who cried out…
Psa 34:6 This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; …
Psa 107:6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,…

and the afflicted who have no helper.

The afflicted often lacked family, wealth, influence, or a helper to secure justice in the ancient world. Their condition called for the king’s direct protection. God Himself is the defender of the helpless, and the promised King fully displays that justice and compassion as the advocate and savior of His people.

Psa 22:11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near…
Psa 10:14 But You have regarded trouble and grief;…
Psa 109:31 For He stands at the right hand of the needy one…

He will take pity on the poor and needy

The righteous king rules with compassion toward those unable to protect or provide for themselves. His concern reflects God’s care for the weak, the afflicted, and those overlooked by society. Such mercy marks the promised reign of the Messiah, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who showed compassion to the suffering and proclaimed good news to the poor.

Jer 22:16 He took up the cause of the poor and needy,…
Pro 31:9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend…
Psa 82:3-4 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;…

and save the lives of the oppressed.

The king does not merely acknowledge their suffering but acts to rescue them from injustice and violence. He stands against those who exploit the powerless and delivers those under oppression. Ultimately, Christ brings lasting salvation, freeing His people from sin and securing the future end of all suffering under His righteous rule.

Jer 20:13 Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! For He rescues the life…
Psa 35:10 All my bones will exclaim, “Who is like You, O LORD,…
Psa 146:7 He executes justice for the oppressed and gives food…

He will redeem them from oppression and violence,

The righteous king rescues the poor and afflicted from those who exploit, abuse, or destroy them. His rule reflects God’s concern for justice, especially where corrupt power has left the vulnerable without protection. This hope finds its fullest expression in Christ, who delivers His people from sin and establishes righteous judgment.

Exo 6:6 Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD…
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD…
2Sa 22:49 who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes;…

for their blood is precious in his sight.

Their lives are neither hidden nor insignificant to the king. God regards the suffering and death of the innocent as a serious matter and holds oppressors accountable. The Messiah’s care for the weak reveals the value God places on every life entrusted to His protection.

Psa 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints…
1Sa 26:21 Then Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son.…
Deu 32:43 Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all God's angels…

Long may he live!

The king’s life and welfare were closely tied to the peace and stability of the nation. Solomon’s reign gave Israel a period of security, wealth, and international influence, yet the prayer ultimately reaches beyond any earthly ruler to the enduring reign of Christ.

2Sa 16:16 And David’s friend Hushai the Archite went to Absalom…
1Ki 1:31 Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king…
Psa 61:6 Increase the days of the king’s life; may his years……

May gold from Sheba be given him.

Sheba, in southern Arabia, was renowned for gold, spices, and trade. Foreign tribute reflected the honor given to Solomon by surrounding nations, including the visit of the queen of Sheba. Such royal gifts anticipate the nations’ acknowledgment of the greater King.

Isa 60:6 Caravans of camels will cover your land,…
1Ki 10:2 She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large caravan…
2Ch 9:9 Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold,…

May people ever pray for him;

Israel was to seek God’s favor and wisdom for its ruler, since the king governed as God’s servant over His people. The welfare of the kingdom depended upon righteous leadership under God’s authority.

1Ti 2:1-2 First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers…
Psa 20:1-5 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.…
1Sa 12:23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin…

may they bless him all day long.

The people’s continual blessing expressed gratitude for a reign marked by justice, protection, and abundance. Its fullest fulfillment belongs to Christ, whose righteous kingdom brings lasting blessing.

Psa 21:6 For You grant him blessings forever; You cheer him…
Num 24:9 He crouches, he lies down like a lion, like a lioness—…
Gen 27:29 May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you.…

May there be an abundance of grain in the land;

Prosperity in the land was a visible sign of God’s blessing upon a people living under righteous rule. Grain supplied daily food and supported the nation’s stability.

Gen 27:28 May God give to you the dew of heaven…
Jol 2:24 The threshing floors will be full of grain…
Deu 8:8 a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates;…

may it sway atop the hills.

Even the higher ground, normally less productive than the valleys, would yield richly. The picture conveys extraordinary fertility throughout the land.

Psa 147:8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain…
Amo 9:13 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,…
Deu 32:13-14 He made him ride on the heights of the land…

May its fruit trees flourish like the forests of Lebanon,

Lebanon’s forests were known for their great cedars, prized for strength, beauty, and use in building the temple. The comparison portrays abundant growth and lasting prosperity.

Psa 92:12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree…
Hos 14:5-6 I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom…
Ezk 31:3-9 Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful…

the people of its cities like the grass of the field.

A growing population in secure and fruitful cities would reflect peace, health, and divine favor. Under the righteous king anticipated in the psalm, the land and its people flourish together.

Isa 44:3-4 For I will pour water on the thirsty land,…
Job 5:25 You will know that your offspring will be many,…
Hos 1:10 Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand…

May his name endure forever;

The prayer seeks an enduring Davidic kingdom, beginning with Solomon but reaching beyond him to the promised Messiah. The king’s name represents his rule, reputation, and lasting place in God’s purposes. God had pledged that David’s royal house would endure, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose reign will never end.

Psa 135:13 Your name, O LORD, endures forever, Your renown, O LORD…
1Ch 17:24 Your name will be established and magnified forever…
Isa 56:5 I will give them, in My house and within My walls,…

may his name continue as long as the sun shines.

As the sun marks the continuing order of creation, the king’s reign is pictured as permanent and dependable. No earthly ruler fulfilled this hope completely. Christ alone reigns forever as the righteous King over God’s kingdom.

Psa 89:36-37 his offspring shall endure forever, and his throne before Me…
2Sa 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever…
1Ch 17:14 But I will set him over My house and My kingdom forever…

In him may all nations be blessed;

The blessing promised through Abraham’s offspring comes through the Davidic King. Israel’s king was meant to bring justice, peace, and blessing, but Christ fulfills this purpose for every people and nation through salvation.

Gen 18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation…
Gen 22:18 And through your offspring all nations of the earth…
Gal 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles…

may they call him blessed.

The nations will recognize and honor the King through whom God’s blessing has come. The prayer anticipates the day when all peoples acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and give Him the worship due to God’s anointed King.

Mal 3:12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed,”…
Luk 1:48 For He has looked with favor on the humble state…
Job 29:11 For those who heard me called me blessed,…

Blessed be the LORD God,

Israel’s covenant God alone deserves praise for His holy character, sovereign rule, and faithful care for His people.

Luk 1:68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,…
1Ch 16:36 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…
Psa 106:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

the God of Israel,

He revealed Himself to the descendants of Abraham, delivered them from Egypt, established His covenant with them, and preserved them through their history.

2Ki 19:15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel…
Isa 37:16 O LORD of Hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim,…
Exo 5:1 After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said…

who alone does marvelous deeds.

His works in creation, judgment, deliverance, and provision display power no rival or idol possesses.

Psa 136:4 He alone does great wonders. His loving devotion…
Psa 86:10 For You are great and perform wonders; You alone are God.
Job 9:10 He does great things beyond searching out, and wonders…

And blessed be His glorious name forever;

God’s name reveals His holy character, sovereign power, faithfulness, and mercy. The psalm closes by directing honor to Him without end, acknowledging that His glory does not fade and His reign has no limit.

Psa 113:2 Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forevermore.
Dan 2:20 Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,…
Neh 9:5 Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah…

may all the earth be filled with His glory.

Solomon’s kingdom pointed beyond itself to the greater reign of the promised King, whose righteous rule will extend over all nations. The prayer anticipates the day when the whole earth openly recognizes the majesty and authority of the Lord.

Num 14:21 Yet as surely as I live and as surely as the whole earth…
Isa 6:3 “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts;…”…
Hab 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory…

Amen and amen.

The double affirmation, “amen” (“truly” or “so be it”), confirms the certainty of this prayer and expresses wholehearted agreement with God’s purpose. It concludes the second book of Psalms with confidence that the Lord will fulfill all He has promised.

Psa 89:52 Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen.
Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel…
1Ch 16:36 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

Thus conclude the prayers

“Thus conclude the prayers of David son of Jesse” marks the end of the second book of the Psalter and closes a distinct collection associated primarily with David. Although later psalms also bear David’s name, this notice concludes a grouping of prayers and songs shaped by his kingship, trials, worship, and trust in God.

Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel…
Psa 89:52 Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen.
Psa 106:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

of David

The phrase “of David” identifies the collection with Israel’s shepherd-king, whose life included persecution, warfare, repentance, and covenant promise. His prayers gave voice to both personal need and the hope of God’s righteous rule through David’s promised royal line.

Psa 86:1 A prayer of David. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and answer me,…
Psa 142:1 A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A prayer.…
Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…

son of Jesse.

“Son of Jesse” identifies David by his humble Bethlehemite family background. Though Jesse’s youngest son, David was chosen and anointed by God to rule Israel, establishing the Davidic covenant ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the promised Son of David.

1Sa 25:10 But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse?…
1Sa 20:27 But on the day after the New Moon, the second day,…
1Sa 17:58 “Whose son are you, young man?” asked Saul.…
