The LORD Has Heard My Voice

I love the LORD,

The psalmist responds to God with personal devotion born from experienced grace. Love for the LORD includes trust, gratitude, and faithful obedience within the covenant relationship God established with His people.

Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart…
Psa 31:23 Love the LORD, all His saints. The LORD preserves…

for He has heard my voice—

God is not distant from those who call on Him. Having faced danger and distress, the psalmist knows that the LORD listened and acted on his behalf.

Psa 28:6 Blessed be the LORD, for He has heard my cry for mercy.
Psa 66:19 But God has surely heard; He has attended…
Psa 34:6 This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; …

my appeal for mercy.

His deliverance came not through human strength or merit, but through God’s compassion and faithful care for the needy.

Psa 143:1 A Psalm of David. O LORD, hear my prayer.…
Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
Psa 28:2 Hear my cry for mercy when I call to You for help,…

Because He has inclined His ear to me,

God is not distant from those who seek Him. He hears the cries of His people and acts according to His faithfulness and covenant mercy. The psalmist recalls God’s personal response to distress and recognizes that the Lord willingly gives attention to those who call upon Him.

Psa 40:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently…
Psa 31:2 Incline Your ear to me; come quickly to my rescue.…
Psa 17:6 I call on You, O God, for You will answer me.…

I will call on Him

Having experienced God’s help, the psalmist resolves to continue seeking Him in prayer, relying on His power and faithfulness. His dependence on the Lord is not limited to a single crisis but marks an enduring relationship of trust and worship.

Psa 18:3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised;…
2Sa 22:4 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised;…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…

as long as I live.

Deliverance produces lasting devotion. The psalmist commits the remainder of his life to calling on the God who heard him, confident that the Lord remains faithful through every season.

Psa 63:4 So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name…
Psa 104:33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise…
Psa 146:2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing…

The ropes of death entangled me;

Death seemed to close in like cords binding a helpless victim, leaving no apparent escape. The psalmist recalls a crisis in which mortal danger had surrounded him and human strength offered no deliverance.

Psa 18:4-5 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of chaos…
2Sa 22:6 The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death…

the anguish of Sheol overcame me;

The prospect of the grave filled him with terror and distress. Sheol represented the realm of the dead, and he felt as though its power had already seized him.

Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…
Psa 30:3 O LORD, You pulled me up from Sheol; You spared…

I was confronted by trouble and sorrow.

Outward danger brought inward grief, pressing him into deep affliction. His cry rises from real suffering and prepares for his testimony that the Lord heard and delivered him.

Psa 119:143 Trouble and distress have found me, but Your commandments…
Jer 45:3 Woe is me because the LORD has added sorrow to my pain!…
Psa 31:9-10 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress;…

Then I called on the name of the LORD:

In the midst of severe distress, the psalmist appeals directly to the covenant God, trusting Him to hear and act. His prayer reflects confidence that the LORD remains near to His people and is able to intervene in their darkest circumstances.

Gen 4:26 And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh.…
Jol 2:32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved…
Rom 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord…

“O LORD, deliver my soul!”

The plea seeks rescue from death and overwhelming trouble, encompassing the psalmist’s whole life. God’s deliverance reveals His mercy toward those who depend on Him and anticipates the full salvation accomplished through Christ.

Psa 25:20 Guard my soul and deliver me; let me not be put to shame…
Psa 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life…
Psa 86:13 For great is Your loving devotion to me;…

The LORD is gracious and righteous;

God’s character joins mercy with perfect justice. He deals kindly with sinners without overlooking evil, remaining faithful to His holiness and His covenant promises. His grace is seen in His patience, forgiveness, and care for those who call upon Him.

Psa 112:4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright…
Exo 34:6 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:…
Psa 145:17 The LORD is righteous in all His ways…

our God is full of compassion.

God’s compassion is abundant and personal, extending to the helpless, afflicted, and repentant. He is not distant from human suffering but attends to the needs of His people with the tenderness and faithfulness of a loving Father.

Jas 5:11 See how blessed we consider those who have persevered…
Psa 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger…
Neh 9:17 They refused to listen and failed to remember…

The LORD preserves the simplehearted;

God watches over those who depend on Him with humble sincerity rather than pride or self-reliance. Their faith is not foolishness but a recognition of their need for His care.

Psa 31:23 Love the LORD, all His saints. The LORD preserves…
Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Psa 145:20 The LORD preserves all who love Him, but…

I was helpless,

The psalmist recalls a time of deep weakness and danger, when he had no ability to rescue himself.

Psa 72:12-13 For he will deliver the needy who cry out…
2Ch 20:12 Our God, will You not judge them? We are powerless…
Deu 32:36 For the LORD will vindicate His people and have compassion…

and He saved me.

The Lord personally delivered him, giving him reason to testify to God’s faithful protection and mercy.

2Sa 22:3 My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge…
Psa 118:14 The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become…
Isa 12:2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.…

Return to your rest, O my soul,

Having been delivered from distress, the psalmist calls himself to renewed peace. His rest is grounded not in changed circumstances alone but in confidence that God has heard and preserved him.

Psa 62:1 For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun.…
Mat 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me…
Jer 6:16 Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths…

for the LORD has been good to you.

God’s past mercy gives reason for present trust. The psalmist remembers the Lord’s deliverance from death, tears, and stumbling, and he rests in the faithful care of the God who has acted for him.

Psa 13:6 I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me.
Psa 34:8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man…
Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures…

For You have delivered my soul from death,

The psalmist gives God credit for preserving his life in a time of grave danger. His “soul” refers to his whole person, and the rescue recalls the Lord’s repeated deliverance of His people from threats beyond their strength.

Psa 56:13 For You have delivered my soul from death, …
Psa 68:20 Our God is a God of deliverance; the Lord GOD is our rescuer…
Psa 30:3 O LORD, You pulled me up from Sheol; You spared…

my eyes from tears,

God had turned a season of distress and mourning into relief. The psalmist’s deliverance was not merely survival but the restoration of joy after suffering.

Jer 31:16 This is what the LORD says: “Keep your voice from weeping…
Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death forever. The Lord GOD…
Rev 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes…

my feet from stumbling.

God had kept him from falling into ruin and had established him in a faithful path. Having been rescued, the psalmist could continue walking before the Lord in obedience and gratitude.

Psa 17:5 My steps have held to Your paths; my feet have not slipped.
Pro 3:23 Then you will go on your way in safety,…
Psa 121:3 He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector…

I will walk before the LORD

Delivered from death, the psalmist resolves to live openly under God’s watchful care, ordering his life in obedience and faithful service.

Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared…
Gen 24:40 And he told me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked,…
2Ki 20:3 “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked…”…

in the land of the living.

Having been spared, he will continue to worship and testify to the Lord’s goodness among God’s people on earth.

Psa 27:13 Still I am certain to see the goodness of the LORD…
Psa 52:5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin;…
Isa 38:11 I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD…”…

I believed,

The psalmist speaks from settled trust in the Lord, even while surrounded by distress. His faith rests not in changing circumstances but in God’s faithfulness and deliverance.

Psa 27:13 Still I am certain to see the goodness of the LORD…
Gen 15:6 Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him…
Rom 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God…

therefore I said,

Belief moved him to speak openly of his condition. Faith did not silence his grief; it gave him confidence to bring his trouble before God and to testify of His help.

2Co 4:13 And in keeping with what is written, “I believed,…
Rom 10:10 For with your heart you believe and are justified…
Psa 31:14 But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, “You are my God.”

“I am greatly afflicted.”

His suffering was real and severe, yet it did not overturn his trust. The psalm joins honest lament with confidence that the Lord hears, preserves, and delivers His people.

Psa 119:107 I am severely afflicted, O LORD; revive me…
Psa 119:153 Look upon my affliction and rescue me…
Lam 1:12 Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by?…

In my alarm I said,

Overwhelmed by danger and distress, the psalmist spoke hastily from a heart shaken by fear. His words reveal the pressure of suffering and the weakness of human judgment when trouble seems to close in.

Psa 31:22 “In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from Your sight!””…
1Sa 27:1 David, however, said to himself, “One of these days…
Psa 56:3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.

“All men are liars!”

In that moment, he regarded people as unreliable and deceptive, unable to provide the security he needed. The outcry contrasts human unfaithfulness with the Lord’s truth and faithfulness, directing confidence away from men and toward God.

Rom 3:4 Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar.…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Jer 9:4-5 “Let everyone guard against his neighbor; do not trust any…”…

How can I repay the LORD

The psalmist recognizes that God’s mercies cannot be repaid as though they were a debt. Having been delivered from distress and death, he considers how he may rightly respond to the Lord’s grace with thankful obedience and worship.

Rom 11:35 “Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?”
Job 41:11 Who has given to Me that I should repay him?…
Job 35:7 If you are righteous, what do you give Him?…

for all His goodness to me?

God’s goodness includes His preservation, answered prayer, and faithful care in the psalmist’s time of need. The question prepares for the vows and acts of public thanksgiving that follow, showing that gratitude is expressed through devoted service to the Lord.

Psa 103:2-5 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget…
Psa 31:19 How great is Your goodness which You have laid up…
Psa 145:7 They will extol the fame of Your abundant goodness…

I will lift the cup of salvation

The psalmist answers God’s deliverance with public thanksgiving. The cup represents the salvation and blessings the LORD has given, received with gratitude and celebrated before His people.

1Co 10:16 Is not the cup of blessing that we bless…
Mat 26:27 Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them…
Luk 22:20 In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying,…

and call on the name of the LORD.

He will openly worship the LORD, depending on Him alone and acknowledging Him as the source of his rescue.

Jol 2:32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved…
Rom 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord…
Gen 4:26 And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh.…

I will fulfill my vows to the LORD

The psalmist commits to honoring the promises he made during distress, likely through sacrifices and public worship. Vows to God were binding acts of devotion, and keeping them demonstrated reverence, gratitude, and faithfulness.

Jon 2:9 But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice…
Psa 50:14 Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and fulfill your vows…
Psa 66:13-14 I will enter Your house with burnt offerings;…

in the presence of all His people.

He will carry out these vows openly among the worshiping assembly, probably at the temple. His public obedience acknowledges God’s deliverance and bears witness to the congregation of the LORD’s faithfulness.

Psa 22:22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;…
Psa 35:18 Then I will give You thanks in the great assembly;…
Psa 40:9-10 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly;…

Precious in the sight of the LORD

God regards the death of His faithful people as precious—costly and rare—with deep concern and purpose. Their lives belong to Him, and their passing is never unnoticed or insignificant.

Psa 72:14 He will redeem them from oppression and violence…
Isa 43:4 Because you are precious and honored in My sight,…
1Sa 26:21 Then Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son.…

is the death of His saints.

Those set apart for the Lord are received into His presence at death, with the certainty of resurrection and eternal life. For believers facing suffering or persecution, their death remains under God’s sovereign care and serves as a testimony to their faithfulness.

Rev 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write…
Pro 14:32 The wicked man is thrown down by his own sin,…
1Th 4:14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, …

Truly, O LORD, I am Your servant;

The psalmist openly declares his complete belonging to the LORD. His life, worship, and obedience are placed under God’s authority.

Psa 119:125 I am Your servant; give me understanding…
Psa 143:12 And in Your loving devotion, cut off my enemies.…
Luk 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.…

I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant;

He comes from a household marked by devotion to the LORD, identifying himself humbly with a family heritage of faithful service.

Psa 86:16 Turn to me and have mercy; grant Your strength……
Exo 23:12 For six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day…
Isa 49:1 Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples:…

You have broken my bonds.

The LORD has delivered him from distress and danger. Having been set free by God’s saving power, he responds not with independence but with renewed service and gratitude.

Jer 2:20 “For long ago you broke your yoke and tore off your chains,…
Nam 1:13 For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away…
Psa 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death…

I will offer to You a sacrifice of thanksgiving

Under the law, a thanksgiving offering was a peace offering brought in grateful response to God’s mercy, provision, or deliverance. Its presentation acknowledged that every blessing came from the LORD and that fellowship with Him rested on His grace. The psalmist responds to the LORD’s rescue not with mere words but with public worship and grateful obedience.

Psa 50:14 Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and fulfill your vows…
Psa 107:22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving…
Lev 7:12 If he offers it in thanksgiving, then with the sacrifice…

and call on the name of the LORD.

He will openly worship the LORD, depend on Him, and seek His help as the God who has heard and delivered him. Calling on the LORD’s name expresses personal trust in the covenant God and a willingness to honor Him before others.

Gen 12:8 From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel…
Gen 13:4 to the site where he had built the altar.…
1Ki 18:24 Then you may call on the name of your god,…

I will fulfill my vows to the LORD

Having been delivered from danger and death, the psalmist resolves to carry out the promises he made to God. Vows were solemn commitments and could not be treated lightly. Fulfilling them expressed gratitude, reverence, and faithful obedience to the LORD who had heard his cry.

Psa 50:14 Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and fulfill your vows…
Psa 66:13-14 I will enter Your house with burnt offerings;…
Deu 23:21 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…

in the presence of all His people,

The vows would be fulfilled publicly among the worshiping assembly, likely at the temple in Jerusalem. His obedience would testify before Israel that the LORD had acted on his behalf and that His servants are accountable to honor what they promise before God.

Psa 22:25 My praise for You resounds in the great assembly;…
Psa 26:12 My feet stand on level ground; in the congregations…
Psa 35:18 Then I will give You thanks in the great assembly;…

in the courts of the LORD’s house,

Public thanksgiving belonged in the temple courts, where Israel gathered for sacrifices, prayer, and the appointed feasts. The psalmist’s deliverance was not kept private; he intended to fulfill his vows before the worshiping congregation in the place God had chosen for His name.

Psa 84:2 My soul longs, even faints, for the courts of the LORD;…
Psa 92:13 Planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish…
Psa 96:8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name;…

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem was Israel’s spiritual and national center because the temple stood there. Praise offered in the city joined personal gratitude to the covenant life of the whole nation before the LORD.

Zec 8:3 This is what the LORD says: “I will return to Zion…
Zep 3:15 The LORD has taken away your punishment…
Psa 46:5 God is within her; she will not be moved.…

Hallelujah!

The psalm closes with a direct call to praise the LORD—“Hallelujah,” meaning “Praise the LORD”—whose mercy and faithfulness had preserved His servant.

Psa 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Hallelujah!
Psa 113:1 Hallelujah! Give praise, O servants of the LORD…
Psa 148:1 Hallelujah! Praise the LORD from the heavens;…
