Berean Study Bible Joshua’s Charge to LeadersIsrael had entered a settled period following the major campaigns of conquest in Canaan. God had fulfilled His promise to establish them in the land and give them relief from the hostile nations that had opposed their entrance. The people now faced the responsibility of living faithfully in the inheritance they had received. Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,… when Joshua was old and well along in years, Joshua stood near the end of his life as one of the last leaders connected to the Exodus generation. Having led Israel through the conquest and distribution of the land, he gathered the nation’s leaders to remind them of their covenant duty. His approaching death made clear that Israel’s security depended not on Joshua’s presence but on continued obedience to the LORD. Jos 13:1 Now Joshua was old and well along in years,… he summoned all Israel, Joshua called the nation together through its recognized representatives as he prepared to give his final charge. The gathering marked a decisive moment after the conquest, when Israel needed to remain united in obedience to the Lord. Jos 24:1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.… including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. These men carried responsibility for civil order, judgment, military direction, and local administration. Their presence ensured that Joshua’s instructions would be received and applied throughout the tribes. Deu 29:10 All of you are standing today before the LORD your God… “I am old and well along in years,” he said, Having led Israel through the conquest and settlement of the land, Joshua recognized that his service was nearing its end. His words introduce a final appeal for the nation to remember the Lord’s faithfulness and keep His covenant after his death. Jos 13:1 Now Joshua was old and well along in years,… “and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, Israel had witnessed the Lord’s judgment on the Canaanite nations and His fulfillment of the land promise made to Abraham. From the victories east of the Jordan over Sihon and Og to the conquest of Jericho, Ai, and the southern and northern coalitions, the people had seen that their possession of the land rested on God’s covenant faithfulness. Deu 9:4-5 When the LORD your God has driven them out before you,… because it was the LORD your God who fought for you. Israel’s victories were not the result of superior numbers or military strength. The Lord had directed the campaigns, brought fear upon Israel’s enemies, and given His people success in battle. Joshua’s reminder called Israel to remain faithful to the God whose power had secured their inheritance. Deu 3:22 Do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God… See, I have allotted as an inheritance to your tribes Joshua reminded Israel that the land was God’s gift, distributed among the tribes according to His command. Their possession of Canaan fulfilled His covenant promise and established each tribe’s place within the nation. Jos 13:7 Now therefore divide this land as an inheritance… these remaining nations, Several Canaanite peoples still occupied portions of the land. Israel was to continue driving them out rather than coexist with their idolatry and influence. Jdg 3:1-2 These are the nations that the LORD left to test…… including all the nations I have already cut off, Israel’s earlier victories had come through the Lord’s power, not military strength alone. The defeated kingdoms stood as evidence that God had acted on Israel’s behalf and would continue to do so. Deu 2:31-33 Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun… from the Jordan westward to the Great Sea. The allotted territory extended from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, including the central hill country, western foothills, and coastal regions of Canaan. Jos 1:4 Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon… The LORD your God will push them out of your way Israel’s coming victory in Canaan would depend on God’s power, not military strength alone. He had determined to remove the nations occupying the land and to give Israel what He had promised their fathers. Deu 7:22 The LORD your God will drive out these nations… and drive them out before you, God would go before Israel in judgment against the Canaanite peoples, whose long-standing wickedness had reached its appointed measure. Their removal also displayed His faithfulness to His covenant with Israel. Jos 24:12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, and it drove out… so that you can take possession of their land, The land was Israel’s inheritance under God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Possessing it required obedience and faithfulness to the Lord who had given it. Num 33:53 You are to take possession of the land and settle in it… as the LORD your God promised you. Joshua reminded Israel that the conquest fulfilled God’s own word. What He pledged to the patriarchs was being accomplished in their generation. Exo 6:8 And I will bring you into the land that I swore to give… Be very strong, then, Joshua urged Israel’s leaders to show resolute courage as they prepared to continue without him. Their strength was needed to remain faithful to the Lord amid the pressures and temptations of life in Canaan. Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified… so that you can keep and obey Israel’s security and blessing depended on careful, active obedience to the covenant God had given them. Jos 22:5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law… all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, The written Law provided the authoritative standard for Israel’s worship, justice, national life, and personal conduct. Jos 8:31 just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD… not turning aside from it to the right or to the left. They were not to compromise with idolatry, adopt the practices of the surrounding nations, or alter God’s commands. Deu 17:20 Then his heart will not be exalted above his countrymen,… So you are not to associate with these nations that remain among you. Although Israel had gained control of much of Canaan, several pagan peoples still lived within the land. Their continued presence posed a spiritual danger because their religion and customs were opposed to Israel’s covenant faithfulness to the LORD. Israel was not to form alliances, marriages, or social bonds that would draw them into Canaanite worship and practices. Deu 7:2-4 and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you… You must not call on the names of their gods or swear by them, Israel was to give no recognition, honor, or allegiance to the gods of the surrounding nations. To invoke a god’s name or swear by it was to treat that god as a true authority and source of blessing or judgment. Such actions would deny the LORD’s unique place as Israel’s God. Exo 23:13 Pay close attention to everything I have said to you.… and you must not serve them or bow down to them. Participation in pagan worship, whether through ritual service or acts of submission, would break Israel’s covenant with the LORD. Joshua warned the people because idolatry had repeatedly brought judgment upon earlier generations. Their security in the land depended on remaining devoted to the God who had delivered them and given them Canaan. Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;… Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, Joshua calls Israel to remain exclusively loyal to the God who gave them the land and defeated their enemies. As Israel settled among the remaining Canaanite peoples, they faced continuing pressure to adopt foreign worship and alliances that would draw them from the covenant. Deu 10:20 You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him.… as you have done to this day. Joshua commends their present faithfulness during the conquest and urges them to continue in it. Their past victories had come through obedience to the LORD, but their future security depended on the same steadfast devotion. Jos 22:3 All this time you have not deserted your brothers,… The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, Israel’s victories in Canaan came through God’s power, not Israel’s military strength. He fulfilled His covenant promise to give Abraham’s descendants the land by removing established peoples, including the Amorites, Hittites, and Canaanites. Their defeat demonstrated that the Lord ruled over the nations and fought for His people. Deu 4:38 to drive out before you nations greater and mightier… and to this day no one can stand against you. During Joshua’s leadership, Israel’s enemies had been unable to overturn what God had accomplished. Their security rested on continued faithfulness to the Lord, whose presence had preserved them against stronger armies. The later history of Israel would show that rebellion against Him brought the loss of that protection. Deu 7:24 He will hand their kings over to you, and you will… One of you can put a thousand to flight, Israel’s victories in Canaan showed that military strength alone did not determine the outcome. God enabled His people to overcome larger and stronger armies when they walked in covenant obedience. Deu 32:30 How could one man pursue a thousand, or two… because the LORD your God fights for you, The Lord Himself defended Israel and gave them victory over their enemies, fulfilling His role as their divine warrior. Their security depended on trusting Him and remaining faithful to Him. Deu 3:22 Do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God… just as He promised. God had pledged to drive out the nations before Israel and establish them in the land. His past faithfulness assured them that every remaining promise would also be fulfilled. Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel… Therefore watch yourselves carefully, Joshua urges Israel to remain vigilant as they enter and settle the land God promised them. The Lord had driven out stronger nations and fulfilled His word, but Israel’s future faithfulness required deliberate attention to their conduct and loyalties. Surrounded by peoples who worshiped other gods, they needed to guard against alliances and practices that would draw them away from the covenant. Deu 4:9 Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves… that you love the LORD your God. Israel’s security and blessing depended on wholehearted devotion to the Lord who had redeemed and preserved them. Love for God was shown through obedience to His commands and rejection of idolatry. Joshua’s charge recalls the covenant commitment Israel had accepted: the Lord alone was their God, and they were to serve Him without compromise. Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart… For if you turn away Israel’s continued possession of the land depended on covenant faithfulness. Turning from the Lord would repeat the disobedience that had brought earlier generations under judgment. Deu 30:17-18 But if your heart turns away and you do not listen,… and cling to the rest of these nations that remain among you, Several Canaanite groups remained in the land because Israel had not fully carried out the conquest. Dependence on them, political alliances with them, or participation in their worship would draw Israel away from the Lord. Deu 7:1-2 When the LORD your God brings you into the land… and if you intermarry Marriage with the Canaanites threatened Israel’s exclusive devotion to God. Foreign spouses commonly brought their household gods and religious customs into Israelite homes, a danger later seen in Solomon’s reign. Deu 7:3-4 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters… and associate with them, Close alliances and shared life with these nations would weaken Israel’s separation from idolatry. Joshua warned that such compromise would eventually bring spiritual corruption and national ruin. Psa 106:35-36 but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.… know for sure Israel’s continued disobedience would bring certain consequences. God had faithfully given them the land, but their enjoyment of it depended on covenant obedience. Deu 4:39 Know therefore this day and take to heart… that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. The remaining Canaanite peoples would no longer be removed by divine power because Israel had failed to carry out God’s command to destroy their idolatrous influence. Exo 23:29-30 I will not drive them out before you in a single year;… Instead, they will become for you a snare and a trap, Their customs, alliances, and false worship would draw Israel into compromise and rebellion against the LORD. Exo 23:33 They must not remain in your land, lest they cause you… a scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, The nations left in the land would become a continual source of conflict, oppression, and spiritual corruption. Num 33:55 But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land… until you perish from this good land The land was God’s gift, yet Israel could be removed from it if they persisted in breaking His covenant. Deu 11:17 or the anger of the LORD will be kindled… that the LORD your God has given you. Their possession of Canaan rested on God’s grace and authority, not on Israel’s strength or permanent claim. Deu 8:10 When you eat and are satisfied, bless the LORD your God… Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, Near the end of his life, Joshua gathered Israel’s leaders and acknowledged that his earthly service was finished. Though Israel’s human leader would soon die, the Lord who had brought them into the land would remain with them. 1Ki 2:2 I am about to go the way of all the earth.… and you know with all your heart and soul The people had seen God’s work in delivering them, defeating their enemies, and giving them their inheritance. Their knowledge was not distant or uncertain but grounded in the events they had experienced. Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,… that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. The Lord had done all He promised concerning the land, Israel’s victories, and His presence among them. Joshua points to their history as proof that God’s covenant word is completely trustworthy. 1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel… Everything was fulfilled for you; Israel’s settlement in Canaan and the defeat of its enemies had come through God’s power rather than Israel’s strength. What God had pledged, He brought to completion. Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel… not one promise has failed. Joshua’s repeated assurance establishes God’s faithfulness as the foundation for Israel’s future obedience. The same God who fulfilled His promises of blessing would also carry out His warnings if Israel turned from Him. 2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.… But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, Israel’s possession of Canaan demonstrated that God had fulfilled His covenant promises. The victories and inheritance recorded in Joshua were not achieved by Israel’s strength alone but by the LORD’s faithfulness to what He had pledged to their fathers. Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel… likewise the LORD will bring upon you the calamity He has threatened, The same God who faithfully brought blessing would also carry out the judgments He had warned of if Israel abandoned Him. Their covenant required exclusive loyalty to the LORD; idolatry and rebellion would bring the penalties announced through Moses. Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God… until He has destroyed you from this good land The land was a gracious gift, yet Israel’s continued enjoyment of it depended on covenant obedience. Later invasions and exile showed the reality of this warning when Israel and Judah were removed from the land because of persistent unfaithfulness. Deu 28:63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper… He has given you. The land belonged ultimately to the LORD, who gave it to Israel according to His promise. Their place in it carried the responsibility to worship Him and obey His commands. Jos 24:13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil…… If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, Israel’s covenant with God, established through Abraham and confirmed through Moses, bound the nation to the LORD in faithfulness and obedience. It defined their identity as His people and governed their life in the land. Deu 17:2 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns… which He commanded you, God Himself gave Israel His commandments, including the laws delivered at Sinai. Their obedience was required because the covenant rested on His authority and Israel’s pledged loyalty. Deu 4:13 He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded… and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, Israel lived among nations devoted to many false gods. To adopt their worship would reject the LORD’s exclusive claim upon His people and violate the covenant’s central demand. Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;… then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, God’s anger reflects His holiness and justice toward deliberate rebellion. Idolatry was not a minor offense but covenant unfaithfulness against the God who had rescued and sustained Israel. Deu 6:15 For the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God.… and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.” Canaan was God’s gracious gift and Israel’s promised inheritance, yet remaining in it required covenant faithfulness. Persistent idolatry would bring judgment and removal from the land, as later occurred in Israel’s exile. Deu 4:26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com.
