Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.

Hezekiah, king of Judah, had led major reforms that restored temple worship and removed idolatrous practices. His illness came during a dangerous period for Judah, following the Assyrian threat against Jerusalem. Though the disease is not identified, it had reached a point where death appeared certain.

Psa 41:3 The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness…

The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said,

Isaiah served as God’s prophet during Hezekiah’s reign and had already counseled the king during national crises. His arrival brought a message from the Lord concerning the king’s personal future and Judah’s stability.

Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth…
1Sa 20:3 But David again vowed, “Your father knows very well…

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall

Facing the certainty of death, Hezekiah withdrew from those around him and fixed his attention on God. The gesture expressed private grief, humility, and dependence upon the Lord rather than upon physicians, officials, or military strength.

1Sa 1:10-11 In her bitter distress, Hannah prayed to the LORD…

“Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully

Hezekiah appealed to the life he had lived before God. As king of Judah, he removed idolatrous practices, restored proper worship at the temple, and sought to lead the nation according to the LORD’s commands. His prayer was not a claim of sinlessness but an appeal for mercy based on his sincere covenant faithfulness.

Isa 38:3 Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You…
Psa 26:1 Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD!…
2Ki 18:6 He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn from…

and with wholehearted devotion;

Unlike rulers who divided their allegiance between the LORD and idols, Hezekiah had sought God with an undivided heart. His reforms and his dependence on the LORD during national crisis showed that his trust was not merely public policy but personal devotion.

2Ch 6:14 “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven”…
Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…

I have done what is good in Your sight.”

The record of Hezekiah’s reign identifies him as one of Judah’s most faithful kings. He opposed idolatry, honored the worship of the LORD, and acted according to God’s standards rather than the practices of surrounding nations.

And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

Facing a terminal illness, Hezekiah brought his grief openly before God. His tears reveal both the sorrow of a man confronted by death and his confidence that the LORD heard his prayer.

Luk 22:62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Mat 26:75 Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken:…
1Sa 1:10 In her bitter distress, Hannah prayed to the LORD…

Before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard,

God answered Hezekiah’s prayer without delay. Isaiah had scarcely departed from the palace area when he received further instruction, showing that the king’s plea had been heard and that the earlier announcement of death was not the final outcome.

the word of the LORD came to him,

The message came by God’s direct command, giving Isaiah authority to return to Hezekiah with the Lord’s answer. God remained fully involved in the king’s illness and the future of David’s house.

God reverses the sentence of death and restores the king’s health by His direct power.

Exo 15:26 If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD…
Jer 30:17 But I will restore your health and heal your wounds,…

On the third day from now you will go up to the house of the LORD.

Hezekiah’s recovery would be evident in his return to the temple, where he could again worship the Lord.

Isa 38:22 And Hezekiah had asked, “What will be the sign…”…
Hos 6:2 After two days He will revive us; on the third day…
Psa 116:18-19 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence…

I will add fifteen years to your life.

Hezekiah had received a message of impending death, yet God heard his earnest prayer and granted him fifteen additional years. This mercy preserved Judah’s king during a critical period and gave him time to continue leading the nation after the Assyrian crisis.

Isa 38:5 Go and tell Hezekiah that this is what the LORD,…
Pro 3:2 for they will add length to your days, years…
Pro 9:11 For through wisdom your days will be multiplied…

And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria.

Sennacherib’s Assyrian army had devastated Judah and threatened Jerusalem, but the city would not fall. God would act against the powerful empire that had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and would preserve Hezekiah and Jerusalem.

2Ch 32:22 So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem…
Isa 37:35 “I will defend this city and save it for My own sake…”…
Isa 31:5 Like birds hovering overhead, so the LORD of Hosts…

I will defend this city for My sake and for the sake of My servant David.’”

Jerusalem’s security rested on God’s own purpose and His covenant with David. The Lord would uphold the royal line through which He had promised an enduring kingdom, preserving the city despite Assyria’s military strength.

2Ki 19:34 I will defend this city and save it for My own sake…
1Ki 11:13 Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom away from him.…
1Ki 15:4 Nevertheless, for the sake of David, the LORD his God…

Then Isaiah said,

Isaiah delivered the Lord’s instruction to Hezekiah’s attendants during the king’s illness.

2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
Isa 38:4-5 And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying,…
2Ch 32:24 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…

A poultice of figs was to be placed on the afflicted area as the means God appointed for Hezekiah’s recovery.

and Hezekiah recovered.

The king’s healing fulfilled God’s promise, preserving Hezekiah’s life and confirming the Lord’s mercy toward Judah.

Isa 38:16-17 O Lord, by such things men live, and in all of them……
Psa 41:3 The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness…
Psa 30:2 O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me.

Now Hezekiah had asked Isaiah,

Hezekiah sought confirmation from Isaiah after receiving the promise that the LORD would extend his life.

2Ch 32:24 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…

“What will be the sign

He asked for a visible assurance that God’s word would be fulfilled.

Isa 7:11 “Ask for a sign from the LORD your God,”…
Isa 38:7 This will be a sign to you from the LORD…

that the LORD will heal me

His illness had brought him near death, yet the LORD promised to restore him.

Isa 38:21 Now Isaiah had said, “Prepare a lump of pressed figs…”…
Exo 15:26 If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD…

and that I will go up to the house of the LORD

Recovery would enable Hezekiah to return to the temple in Jerusalem and worship publicly.

Isa 38:22 And Hezekiah had asked, “What will be the sign…”…
Psa 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go…

on the third day?”

The healing was to occur within a definite time, and Isaiah would give a miraculous sign involving the shadow on the stairway of Ahaz.

Isa 38:5-6 Go and tell Hezekiah that this is what the LORD,…
Hos 6:2 After two days He will revive us; on the third day…

And Isaiah had replied,

Isaiah served as the Lord’s prophet during Hezekiah’s reign, bringing God’s word to the king in a time of national danger and personal crisis.

Isa 7:11-14 “Ask for a sign from the LORD your God,”…
Jdg 6:17 Gideon answered, “If I have found favor in Your sight,…

Would you like the shadow to go forward ten steps,

A shadow moving forward on the steps or sundial followed the normal course of the sun and the passing of the day.

Jos 10:12-14 On the day that the LORD gave the Amorites over…
Job 9:7 He commands the sun not to shine; He seals off the stars.
Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons…

or back ten steps?”

Moving backward would plainly reverse the ordinary course of the shadow. The sign demonstrated the Lord’s authority over creation and assured Hezekiah that He could fulfill His promise.

Isa 38:8 I will make the sun’s shadow go back ten steps.…
Hab 3:11 Sun and moon stood still in their places…
Psa 74:16-17 The day is Yours, and also the night; You established…

“It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps,”

Hezekiah recognized that a lengthening shadow followed the normal course of the day. The stairway or shadow-measuring device associated with Ahaz marked the passing hours as the sun moved across the sky.

Jos 10:13 So the sun stood still and the moon stopped…
Psa 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons…
Ecc 1:5 The sun rises and the sun sets; it hurries back…

answered Hezekiah,

Facing death and having received God’s promise of healing through Isaiah, Hezekiah sought a sign that would plainly confirm what the Lord had said.

2Ch 32:24-25 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…
2Ki 19:14-19 So Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers…
Isa 37:15-20 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD:…

“but not for it to go back ten steps.”

A backward movement would not occur naturally. Hezekiah asked for a sign that displayed God’s authority over the created order and gave unmistakable assurance that He would fulfill His promise.

Isa 38:8 I will make the sun’s shadow go back ten steps.…
Hab 3:11 Sun and moon stood still in their places…
2Ch 32:31 And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent…

So Isaiah the prophet called out to the LORD,

Isaiah interceded for King Hezekiah, who had sought assurance that God would fulfill His promise of healing and restoration. As the LORD’s prophet, Isaiah faithfully brought God’s word to the king and appealed to God on his behalf.

1Ki 18:36-38 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…
1Sa 7:8-10 said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God”…
Exo 8:30-31 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD,…

and He brought the shadow back the ten steps

God answered with a visible miracle, reversing the shadow’s movement as a sign that Hezekiah would recover. The event demonstrated the LORD’s authority over creation and confirmed that His promise would stand.

Isa 38:8 I will make the sun’s shadow go back ten steps.…
Jos 10:12-14 On the day that the LORD gave the Amorites over…
Hab 3:11 Sun and moon stood still in their places…

it had descended on the stairway of Ahaz.

The stairway, likely used to mark the passing of time by the sun’s shadow, was associated with Ahaz, Hezekiah’s father. What had been a familiar feature in Jerusalem became the setting for an unmistakable sign of God’s power.

Isa 7:10-14 Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying,…
2Ki 16:10-18 Then King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser…
2Ch 28:1-4 Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king…

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures

At that time

Hezekiah had recovered from a grave illness, and Judah stood amid the growing power of Assyria and the political ambitions of Babylon.

2Ch 32:1 After all these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib…
2Ki 18:13 In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah’s reign…

Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon

Merodach-baladan, whose name means “Marduk has given a son,” was a Babylonian ruler who resisted Assyrian control and sought support from surrounding nations.

Isa 39:1 At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan…
2Ch 32:31 And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent…

sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah,

His embassy honored Hezekiah while likely seeking to draw Judah into an alliance against Assyria.

2Ki 5:5 “Go now,” said the king of Aram, “and I will send you…
1Ki 10:2 She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large caravan…

for he had heard about Hezekiah’s illness.

Hezekiah’s recovery had become widely known, bringing Babylon’s representatives to Jerusalem and setting the stage for Hezekiah’s later display of Judah’s wealth.

2Ch 32:24 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…
Isa 38:1-5 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…

And Hezekiah received the envoys

Hezekiah welcomed the Babylonian delegation sent after his recovery from illness. Babylon was seeking support against Assyria, and the visit gave Hezekiah an opportunity to display Judah’s importance. His response, however, revealed pride and political confidence rather than careful dependence on the Lord.

Isa 39:1 At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan…
2Ch 32:31 And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent…
2Ch 9:1-2 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame…

and showed them all that was in his treasure house—

Hezekiah opened the royal treasury to the envoys, displaying the wealth gathered during his reign.

Isa 39:2 And Hezekiah welcomed the envoys gladly and showed them…
2Ch 32:27 Hezekiah had very great riches and honor…
1Ki 10:23-25 So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth…

the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil,

These costly goods reflected Judah’s prosperity and included resources valuable for trade, worship, and royal use.

1Ki 10:21-22 All King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold,…
2Ch 9:9 Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold,…
1Ki 5:11 year after year Solomon would provide Hiram with 20,000 cors…

as well as his armory—

Hezekiah also disclosed Judah’s weapons and military preparations, giving foreign representatives knowledge that could later be used against the kingdom.

2Ch 32:5 Then Hezekiah worked resolutely to rebuild all…
1Ki 10:16-17 King Solomon made two hundred large shields…
Isa 22:8 He has uncovered the defenses of Judah.…

all that was found in his storehouses.

The storehouses contained the reserves needed to support the palace, the city, and the nation in times of need.

2Ch 32:28 He also made storehouses for the harvest of grain…
2Ch 31:10-11 and Azariah, the chief priest of the household…
Gen 41:56 When the famine had spread over all the land,…

There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them.

Hezekiah withheld nothing from Babylon’s envoys. The full display of Judah’s wealth and strength anticipated the day when Babylon would carry those treasures away.

Isa 39:4 “What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked.…
1Ki 10:3-5 And Solomon answered all her questions;…
1Ki 4:21-24 And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms…

Then the prophet Isaiah went to King Hezekiah and asked,

Isaiah confronted Hezekiah after the Babylonian envoys had departed, carrying out his duty as God’s messenger to the king.

Isa 38:1 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…
2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
2Ki 19:6 who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD…

“Where did those men come from, and what did they say to you?”

His questions exposed the significance of Hezekiah’s meeting with the foreign delegation and prepared the way for God’s warning.

Isa 39:3 Then the prophet Isaiah went to King Hezekiah…
1Sa 30:13 “I am an Egyptian,” he replied, “the slave of an Amalekite.”…
Gen 42:7 And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them,…

“They came from a distant land,” Hezekiah replied,

Hezekiah acknowledged that the visitors had come from far beyond Judah’s borders, revealing the growing interest of foreign powers in his kingdom.

1Ki 8:41 And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel…
Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…
Isa 13:5 They are coming from faraway lands, from the ends…

“from Babylon.”

Babylon was not yet the dominant empire of the region, but it would later conquer Judah and carry its people into exile. Hezekiah’s welcome of its envoys foreshadowed that coming judgment.

Isa 39:1 At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan…
2Ch 32:31 And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent…
Dan 1:2 He carried these off to the land of Shinar…

“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked.

Isaiah confronted Hezekiah after the Babylonian envoys had departed, pressing him to account for what he had revealed. The visit appeared diplomatic, but Babylon was an emerging power whose interest in Judah’s resources carried serious danger.

Isa 39:4 “What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked.…
2Ch 32:31 And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent…
1Ki 10:1-2 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame…

“They have seen everything in my palace,” answered Hezekiah.

Hezekiah admitted that he had displayed the full wealth of his royal storehouses. Rather than honoring God for Judah’s deliverance and blessings, he used the occasion to impress foreign representatives and exposed the kingdom’s strength.

Isa 39:2 And Hezekiah welcomed the envoys gladly and showed them…
1Ki 10:4-5 When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon,…
2Ch 9:3-4 When the queen of Sheba saw the wisdom of Solomon,…

“There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”

Nothing had been withheld, including the riches entrusted to Judah by God. Hezekiah’s pride and lack of caution would become the occasion for Isaiah’s warning that Babylon would one day carry these treasures, along with members of the royal household, into exile.

Isa 39:6 The time will surely come when everything in your palace…
2Ch 32:27-29 Hezekiah had very great riches and honor…
Mat 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah,

Isaiah had faithfully counseled Hezekiah through national crisis, illness, and recovery. After Babylonian envoys had seen the king’s treasures, Isaiah confronted him with God’s evaluation of what had taken place.

Isa 39:3 Then the prophet Isaiah went to King Hezekiah…
2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
2Ki 19:6 who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD…

“Hear the word of the LORD:

Isaiah spoke with divine authority, not personal opinion. The announcement that followed revealed God’s coming judgment on Judah and the consequences of Hezekiah’s display of wealth to Babylon.

Isa 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom;…
Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…
Ezk 20:47 Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word…

The time will surely come

Isaiah announced a certain future judgment on Judah for its persistent unfaithfulness to the LORD.

2Ch 36:15-17 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…
Jer 25:8-11 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

when everything in your palace

The royal house, its resources, and its symbols of power would not protect Judah from the consequences of rebellion.

2Ki 24:13 As the LORD had declared, Nebuchadnezzar also carried off…
2Ch 21:17 So they went to war against Judah, invaded it,…
1Ki 14:26 He seized the treasures of the house of the LORD…

and all that your fathers have stored up until this day

The treasures accumulated through generations, including the wealth of Judah’s kings, would be lost.

1Ch 29:3-4 Moreover, because of my delight in the house of my God…
2Ch 32:27-29 Hezekiah had very great riches and honor…
2Ch 36:18 who carried off everything to Babylon—all the articles…

will be carried off to Babylon.

Babylon would later conquer Jerusalem and remove its wealth, fulfilling Isaiah’s warning.

Isa 39:6-7 The time will surely come when everything in your palace…
Dan 1:1-2 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,…
2Ch 36:20 Those who escaped the sword were carried by…

Nothing will be left,

The judgment would be complete, ending Judah’s security, wealth, and royal prestige.

2Ki 25:13-17 Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars…
Jer 52:17-23 Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars…

says the LORD.

The coming exile rested on God’s own declaration and would occur exactly as He had spoken.

2Ki 21:12 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Jer 27:22 ‘They will be carried to Babylon and will remain there’…

And some of your descendants,

Hezekiah’s royal line would not escape the consequences of his prideful display before the Babylonian envoys. Members of David’s dynasty would later be carried from Judah when Babylon conquered Jerusalem.

Isa 39:7 And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood…
2Ki 24:14-16 He carried into exile all Jerusalem—all the commanders…
2Ch 36:20-21 Those who escaped the sword were carried by…

your own flesh and blood,

The warning reaches beyond Hezekiah’s lifetime to his direct descendants, making the coming judgment personal as well as national. The royal family would share in Judah’s downfall.

2Sa 5:1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron…
Gen 29:14 Then Laban declared, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.…
Gen 37:27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites…

will be taken away

Babylon’s invasions eventually brought the exile of Judah’s leaders, nobles, and people. Jerusalem fell, the temple was destroyed, and the kingdom of Judah came under Babylonian rule.

Jer 39:9 Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away…
2Ki 25:11 Then Nebuzaradan carried into exile the people…
Jer 52:27-28 There at Riblah in the land of Hamath, the king…

to be eunuchs

Some of the royal descendants would serve in Babylon’s court, removed from their homeland and placed under foreign authority. Daniel and his companions were among the Judean youths taken to serve in the Babylonian royal administration.

Dan 1:3-7 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court…
Isa 56:3-5 Let no foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say,…
Est 2:3 and let the king appoint commissioners…

in the palace of the king of Babylon.”

The house of David would be humbled in the court of the empire Hezekiah had welcomed. What had been displayed to Babylon as Judah’s wealth would later become part of Babylon’s conquest and control.

Dan 4:29 Twelve months later, as he was walking on the roof…
