Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger

A Psalm of David, for remembrance.

David composed this psalm as a solemn remembrance of sin, suffering, and dependence on God’s mercy. It likely served both personal reflection and public worship, calling God’s people to remember His righteous judgment and His compassion toward the repentant.

Mal 3:16 At that time those who feared the LORD spoke…
Num 10:10 And on your joyous occasions, your appointed feasts,…
Exo 12:14 And this day will be a memorial for you,…

O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger

David appeals to the covenant God with humility, aware that his sin deserves correction. He does not deny God’s right to judge but asks that divine rebuke not fall upon him in consuming anger.

Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…
Jer 10:24 Correct me, O LORD, but only with justice…
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…

or discipline me in Your wrath.

God’s discipline is just, yet David pleads for mercy within it. His request reflects confidence that the Lord corrects His people to restore them rather than abandon them.

Heb 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation…
Rev 3:19 Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest…
Job 5:17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; …

For Your arrows have pierced me deeply,

David portrays God’s chastening as arrows that have struck him with painful force. His suffering has exposed the seriousness of his sin and the reality of God’s displeasure.

Job 6:4 For the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me;…
Lam 3:12-13 He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow.…
Psa 7:13 He has prepared His deadly weapons; He ordains His arrows…

and Your hand has pressed down on me.

God’s hand signifies His sovereign power in judgment, resting heavily upon David until he recognizes the burden of his guilt. The discipline is severe, yet it points to the judgment for sin ultimately borne by Christ on behalf of His people.

Psa 32:4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;…
1Sa 5:6 Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ashdod…
Lam 3:3 Indeed, He keeps turning His hand against me all day long.

There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger;

David describes the whole-person misery brought by God’s discipline for sin. His suffering is not merely outward illness but the distress of one who knows he stands guilty before the holy God.

Psa 90:7-8 For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified…
Psa 6:1-2 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…
Lam 3:1-3 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod…

there is no rest in my bones because of my sin.

Sin has robbed David of strength, peace, and inward stability. His confession recognizes personal responsibility and the serious consequences of rebellion against God.

Psa 32:3-5 When I kept silent, my bones became brittle.…
Psa 31:9-10 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress;…
Psa 51:8-9 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed…

For my iniquities have overwhelmed me;

David openly acknowledges that his own sins have risen over him like floodwaters. In the midst of physical suffering and opposition from enemies, he recognizes God’s discipline and does not excuse his guilt.

Psa 40:12 For evils without number surround me; my sins have overtaken…
Ezr 9:6 O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed…
Psa 130:3 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities,…

they are a burden too heavy to bear.

Sin weighs upon him with consequences he cannot remove by his own strength. The burden includes guilt, suffering, and the awareness that restoration depends on God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Gen 4:13 But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater”…
Mat 23:4 They tie up heavy, burdensome loads and…
Lev 16:22 The goat will carry on itself all their iniquities…

My wounds are foul and festering

David depicts his suffering as infected, open wounds, revealing the misery of living under God’s discipline. His physical pain reflects the inward ruin sin has brought into his life.

Isa 1:5-6 Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep rebelling…
Job 7:5 My flesh is clothed with worms and encrusted with dirt;…
Mic 1:9 For her wound is incurable; it has reached even Judah;…

because of my sinful folly.

He accepts responsibility rather than blaming his enemies or circumstances. His confession recognizes that rebellion against God carries real consequences and drives him to seek mercy.

Psa 107:17-18 Fools, in their rebellious ways,…
Pro 19:3 A man’s own folly subverts his way, yet his heart…
Lam 3:39 Why should any mortal man complain, in view of his sins?

I am bent and brought low;

The psalmist describes crushing weakness that has affected both body and spirit. His suffering has humbled him, leaving him burdened and unable to stand with strength or confidence.

Psa 44:25 For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies…
Psa 145:14 The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up…
Lam 3:29 Let him bury his face in the dust—perhaps there is…

all day long I go about mourning.

Grief has become his constant condition. Whether caused by sin, illness, or affliction, his sorrow is open and continual as he waits for God’s mercy and deliverance.

Psa 42:9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me?”…
Lam 1:2 She weeps aloud in the night, with tears upon her cheeks.…
Isa 61:3 to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown…

For my loins are full of burning pain,

The psalmist describes severe bodily suffering that has left him weakened and exposed. He understands his condition in connection with God’s discipline for sin, portraying guilt as an inward affliction that has affected even his physical strength.

Isa 21:3 Therefore my body is filled with anguish. Pain grips me…
Lam 1:13 He sent fire from on high, and it overpowered my bones.…
Job 30:30 My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever.

and no soundness remains in my body.

His suffering is comprehensive; he finds no relief or health anywhere in himself. The description reflects the ruin sin brings and the helpless condition of one under God’s chastening, driving him to seek mercy from the Lord.

Isa 1:6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head,…
Job 33:21 His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden bones…
Job 7:5 My flesh is clothed with worms and encrusted with dirt;…

I am numb and badly crushed;

David describes the debilitating weight of suffering under God’s discipline. His strength is spent, and the effects of sin and affliction have left him physically weakened and inwardly broken.

Lam 3:4 He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered…
Psa 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed…
Psa 31:10 For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning…

I groan in anguish of heart.

His pain reaches beyond the body to the deepest part of his being. Unable to hide his distress, David pours out before God the sorrow and turmoil produced by his guilt and suffering.

2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress…
Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…
Job 7:11 Therefore I will not restrain my mouth;…

O Lord, my every desire is before You;

David lays his deepest longings openly before the covenant God who sees the heart and rules over every circumstance. Nothing in his suffering, hopes, or need for deliverance lies beyond the Lord’s knowledge.

Psa 10:17 You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble;…
Psa 145:19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him;…
Psa 21:2 You have granted his heart’s desire and have not withheld…

my groaning is not hidden from You.

His inward anguish is fully known to God. Though his distress may be unseen by others, the Lord hears the lament of His servant and remains attentive to his need.

Exo 2:23-24 After a long time, the king of Egypt died.…
Psa 5:1-2 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 31:10 For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning…

My heart pounds,

David describes distress that has gripped him inwardly and outwardly. His anguish is not hidden; fear and sorrow have shaken his whole person.

Jer 4:19 My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain!…
Psa 55:4 My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death…
1Sa 4:13 When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair…

my strength fails,

He is exhausted, unable to rely on his own resources under the weight of suffering and the awareness of sin.

Psa 31:10 For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning…
Psa 71:9 Do not discard me in my old age; do not forsake me…
Isa 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble…

and even the light of my eyes has faded.

His affliction has drained his vitality and dimmed his hope, portraying a man weakened in body and spirit as he seeks the Lord’s mercy.

1Sa 3:2 And at that time Eli, whose eyesight had grown so dim…
Job 17:7 My eyes have grown dim with grief, and my whole body…
Lam 5:17 Because of this, our hearts are faint; because of these,…

My beloved and friends shun my disease,

David’s painful illness leaves him isolated from those closest to him. In Israel, serious disease could bring fear of defilement, social shame, and the belief that God’s judgment was involved. Those who should have offered comfort withdraw instead, deepening his suffering.

Job 19:13-15 He has removed my brothers from me; my acquaintances have…
Psa 88:8 You have removed my friends from me; You have made me…
Psa 31:11 Among all my enemies I am a disgrace…

and my kinsmen stand at a distance.

Even his relatives remain aloof, though family was expected to provide protection and care. Their separation reveals the full extent of David’s abandonment and anticipates the rejection endured by the righteous sufferer, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

Psa 69:8 I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner…
Psa 27:10 Though my father and mother forsake me,…
Luk 23:49 But all those who knew Jesus, including the women…

Those who seek my life lay snares;

David faced enemies who pursued him with calculated intent, seeking to trap and kill him as Saul repeatedly did during David’s years as a fugitive. Their hostility was not impulsive but deliberate and relentless.

Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net…
Jer 18:22 for they have dug a pit to capture me and have hidden snares…
Psa 31:4 You free me from the net laid out for me…

those who wish me harm speak destruction,

His adversaries used threats, slander, and false accusations to undermine him and advance their plans. Such attacks anticipated the treatment of Christ, whose enemies sought testimony that would justify His death.

Psa 52:2 Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor,…
Psa 64:3-4 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts…

plotting deceit all day long.

The opposition continued without relief, marked by secret counsel and dishonest schemes. David’s suffering came from real enemies whose constant plotting exposed the depth of human rebellion against God’s anointed servant.

Pro 6:14 With deceit in his heart he devises evil;…
Psa 35:20 For they do not speak peace, but they devise deceitful schemes……
Mic 2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds…

But like a deaf man, I do not hear;

Surrounded by enemies who sought his ruin and spoke deceitfully against him, the psalmist refuses to answer their accusations. His silence is deliberate, not helplessness; he will not be drawn into their schemes or attempt to secure justice through argument.

Isa 42:20 Though seeing many things, you do not keep watch.…
Zec 7:11 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…
Psa 58:4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake,…

and like a mute man, I do not open my mouth.

He restrains himself from defending or retaliating against those who oppose him, like a mute man choosing not to speak. Rather than answering evil with evil, he leaves his cause before the Lord, trusting God to judge rightly and deliver him.

Psa 39:9 I have become mute; I do not open my mouth…
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open…
Mat 26:63 But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said…

I am like a man who cannot hear,

David portrays himself as refusing to engage the slander and hostility of those seeking his ruin. His silence reflects weakness under suffering, yet also restraint as he leaves his case before God.

Psa 39:2 I was speechless and still; I remained silent…
Isa 42:19 Who is blind but My servant, or deaf like the messenger…
Deu 29:4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you…

whose mouth offers no reply.

Unable to answer his accusers or defend himself effectively, David does not repay evil with argument or retaliation. His silence anticipates the suffering servant’s willingness to endure unjust accusation without opening His mouth.

Psa 39:9 I have become mute; I do not open my mouth…
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open…
1Pe 2:23 When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate…

I wait for You, O LORD;

David looks to the covenant God of Israel while suffering the consequences of sin and the hostility of enemies. Waiting expresses active trust that God will act at the right time rather than reliance on personal strength or retaliation.

Psa 130:5-6 I wait for the LORD; my soul does wait, and in His word…
Psa 40:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently…
Lam 3:25-26 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,…

You will answer,

His confidence rests in God’s faithfulness to hear the afflicted and uphold those who seek Him. Though relief may not come immediately, David expects the Lord to respond according to His righteousness and mercy.

Psa 86:7 In the day of my distress I call on You…
Jer 33:3 Call to Me, and I will answer and show you…
Isa 58:9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;…

O Lord my God.

The address joins reverence with personal dependence. David acknowledges God as sovereign ruler while claiming Him as his own God, the One to whom he belongs and from whom he expects help.

Psa 30:2 O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me.
Psa 86:12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart;…
Jhn 20:28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”

For I said,

For I said, the psalmist brings his fear directly to God, seeking His protection amid affliction and weakness.

Psa 39:1 For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.…
Psa 77:10 So I said, “I am grieved that the right hand…
Psa 116:11 In my alarm I said, “All men are liars!”

“Let them not gloat over me—

He asks that his suffering not become an occasion for his enemies’ triumph or public scorn.

Psa 35:19 Let not my enemies gloat over me without cause,…
Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;…
Psa 41:11 By this I know that You delight in me, for my enemy…

those who taunt me

His opponents watch for evidence of failure and use his distress to mock him.

Psa 22:7-8 All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:…
Psa 35:21 They gape at me and say, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen!”
Mat 27:39 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him,…

when my foot slips.”

A stumble would give them reason to exalt themselves, so he depends on God to uphold him and preserve him from disgrace.

Psa 94:18 “My foot is slipping,” Your loving devotion, O LORD,…
Psa 73:2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;…
Psa 17:5 My steps have held to Your paths; my feet have not slipped.

For I am ready to fall,

David acknowledges his weakened condition and the real danger of collapse under the burden of sin, affliction, and opposition. His honesty reflects dependence on God rather than confidence in his own strength.

Psa 73:2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;…
Pro 24:16 For though a righteous man may fall seven times,…

and my pain is ever with me.

His suffering is continual, pressing on him physically and inwardly. The unrelieved distress exposes the seriousness of sin’s consequences while driving him to seek the Lord’s mercy and restoration.

Jer 15:18 Why is my pain unending, and my wound incurable?…
Job 30:17 Night pierces my bones, and my gnawing pains never rest.

Yes, I confess my iniquity;

The psalmist openly acknowledges his guilt before God rather than concealing it. Such confession recognizes that sin is not merely a human failure but an offense against the holy God, requiring repentance and His mercy.

Lev 26:40 But if they will confess their iniquity…
Psa 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide…
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just…

I am troubled by my sin.

His guilt brings real anguish, revealing the spiritual burden sin produces. The distress reflects a conscience awakened to wrongdoing and a desire for restoration with God.

Psa 51:3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin…
Lam 1:20 See, O LORD, how distressed I am! I am churning within…
2Co 7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation…

Many are my enemies without cause,

David laments the growing number of opponents who oppose him despite no just offense on his part. His suffering reflects the recurring experience of the righteous being targeted by those driven by envy, suspicion, or self-interest.

Psa 69:4 Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs…
Psa 35:19 Let not my enemies gloat over me without cause,…
Jhn 15:25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:…

and many hate me without reason.

Their hatred is not based on truth or justice but on hostility toward David and the favor God had given him. Though surrounded by unjust enemies, he brings his complaint before the Lord rather than seeking vindication through revenge.

Psa 25:19 Consider my enemies, for they are many, and they hate me…
Psa 109:3 They surround me with hateful words and attack me…
Jhn 15:18 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.

Those who repay my good with evil

David’s enemies answered his goodwill with hostility, revealing the injustice he endured. Though he sought peace and acted faithfully, they treated him as an adversary.

Psa 109:5 They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
Jer 18:20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit…
Pro 17:13 If anyone returns evil for good, evil will never leave…

attack me

Their opposition was active and determined, not merely private resentment. David faced people who worked against him and sought his harm.

Psa 56:2 My enemies pursue me all day long, for many…
Psa 59:3 See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire…
Psa 69:4 Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs…

for pursuing the good.

His suffering did not result from wrongdoing but from his resolve to do what was right before God. The righteous may be opposed precisely because their conduct exposes the evil of those who reject it.

1Pe 3:17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer…
1Pe 2:20 How is it to your credit if you are beaten…
Mat 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted,…

Do not forsake me, O LORD;

David appeals to the covenant God in the midst of guilt, affliction, and hostile opposition. Though suffering under divine discipline, he does not believe the LORD has ceased to be faithful.

Psa 71:9 Do not discard me in my old age; do not forsake me…
Psa 27:9 Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger.…
Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content…

be not far from me, O my God.

He seeks God’s immediate help and protection, resting in a personal relationship with the One who hears the afflicted and remains near to those who call on Him.

Psa 71:12 Be not far from me, O God. Hurry, O my God, to help me.
Psa 35:22 O LORD, You have seen it; be not silent.…
Psa 22:19 But You, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength,…

Come quickly to help me,

David pleads for immediate deliverance as suffering, guilt, and hostile opposition press upon him. He does not treat God’s help as distant or abstract but appeals for intervention in his present distress.

Psa 40:13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD…
Psa 22:19 But You, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength,…
Psa 70:1 For the choirmaster. Of David. To bring remembrance.…

O Lord

He calls on the covenant God of Israel, whose faithfulness had sustained His people through danger, judgment, and deliverance. David’s appeal rests on God’s character and authority rather than his own strength.

Psa 5:1-2 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 109:21 But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me…
Psa 143:1 A Psalm of David. O LORD, hear my prayer.…

my Savior.

God alone could rescue David from the consequences of sin, the weakness of his body, and the attacks of his enemies. The personal confession expresses David’s dependence on the Lord as his deliverer.

Psa 18:46 The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock!…
Luk 1:47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
