The Daughters of Zelophehad

Now the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher,

Zelophehad belonged to the tribe of Manasseh and had died without leaving a son. His daughters therefore faced the loss of their family’s inheritance unless their case was heard.

Without sons, Zelophehad’s name and inheritance appeared likely to disappear from his clan. His daughters therefore brought their case before Moses, seeking to preserve their father’s portion in the land.

Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan because he had no sons?

Zelophehad died in the wilderness without leaving male heirs. His five daughters feared that his family line and allotted inheritance would be lost within the tribe of Manasseh. In Israel, land was tied to family identity and remained connected to the tribe assigned by God. Their appeal sought to preserve their father’s place among his people rather than allow his household to disappear.

The daughters asked for the inheritance their father would have received, placing them among the households of their clan. Their request was orderly and public, brought before Moses, the priest, the leaders, and the congregation. God affirmed their claim and established that daughters were to receive an inheritance when a man died without sons, preserving both the family name and its portion in the land.

So Moses brought their case before the LORD,

Moses did not decide the inheritance question by personal judgment but sought the LORD’s ruling. The daughters of Zelophehad had appealed for their father’s name and property to remain within his family despite his having no sons. Their request required clarification of Israel’s inheritance laws, and Moses brought it before God as Israel’s appointed mediator. The ruling that followed established a just provision for daughters who had no brothers and preserved tribal inheritance according to God’s order.

and the LORD answered him,

God gave Moses a direct ruling concerning the inheritance claim of Zelophehad’s daughters. Their appeal established that a man who died without sons could pass his inheritance to his daughters, preserving the family’s place within its tribe. The decision showed that God’s law provided just treatment for families whose circumstances were not specifically addressed in earlier instructions.
