Berean Study Bible Sin Separates Us from GodGod’s power had not failed or diminished. Though Judah faced sin, injustice, and the threat of judgment, the LORD remained fully able to rescue His people, just as He had delivered Israel from Egypt. Their condition was not caused by any weakness in God. Isa 50:2 Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer… nor His ear too dull to hear. God was not distant from the cries of His people or unaware of their need. He heard them, but their sin had created a barrier to fellowship and blessing. The problem was not God’s ability or willingness to act, but the rebellion that required repentance and judgment. Psa 94:9 He who affixed the ear, can He not hear?… But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, Israel’s rebellion had disrupted the covenant relationship God established with His people. Their wrongdoing was not a minor failure but an offense against God’s holiness, creating real separation between them and the Lord who had called them to live in obedience. Psa 66:18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not… and your sins have hidden His face from you, God’s hidden face describes the withdrawal of His favor and help. Though He remained aware of their condition, He would not grant the blessing and protection they sought while they persisted in sin. Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,… so that He does not hear. God was not deaf to their prayers; He refused to answer them favorably because of their unrepentant rebellion. The problem was not God’s power or willingness to save, but the people’s sin, which required repentance and reconciliation. Isa 1:15 When you spread out your hands in prayer… For your hands are stained with blood, Judah’s guilt was not merely ceremonial but moral and public. Violence, oppression, and the destruction of innocent life had defiled the nation, leaving its people accountable before God. Isa 1:15 When you spread out your hands in prayer… and your fingers with iniquity; Their wrongdoing extended to deliberate acts carried out in daily life. Sin had become woven into their conduct, revealing hearts resistant to God’s standards of justice and righteousness. Isa 58:9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;… your lips have spoken lies, Deceit corrupted personal dealings, legal judgments, and public life. False speech concealed evil and prevented the truth needed for justice. Pro 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD… and your tongue mutters injustice. Their words continually promoted or protected wrongdoing. The nation’s corruption included both violent acts and the speech that enabled oppression, showing why God’s judgment was necessary. Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence… No one calls for justice; Israel’s public life had become morally corrupt. Courts and leaders failed to uphold God’s standards, and the vulnerable found no one willing to defend what was right. Jer 5:1 Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem.… no one pleads his case honestly. Legal disputes were marked by false testimony and self-interest rather than truth and fairness. Exo 23:1-3 You shall not spread a false report. Do not join… They rely on empty pleas; Their arguments carried no substance because they were built on deception. Jer 7:8 But look, you keep trusting in deceptive words to no avail. they tell lies; Falsehood had become habitual, revealing open rebellion against God’s commands. Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips… they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity. Evil began in deliberate thoughts and plans, then produced sinful actions that spread injustice throughout the nation. Psa 7:14 Behold, the wicked man travails with evil;… They hatch the eggs of vipers Their evil schemes produce deadly results, like venomous eggs brought to life. Mat 3:7 But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees… and weave a spider’s web. Their plans are carefully made but weak, deceptive, and unable to provide security or protection. Job 8:14 His confidence is fragile; his security… Whoever eats their eggs will die; Anyone who accepts or joins in their corrupt practices shares in the ruin those practices bring. Pro 9:17-18 “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is tasty!”… crack one open, and a viper is hatched. What appears small or concealed contains the power to harm, revealing the destructive outcome already present in their sin. Psa 7:14 Behold, the wicked man travails with evil;… Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, Cobwebs picture efforts that are fragile, useless, and incapable of providing protection. The people’s own schemes could not conceal their guilt or secure them from the consequences of sin. Job 8:14-15 His confidence is fragile; his security… and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds offered no true righteousness before God. Like inadequate coverings for nakedness, their works could not remedy their moral condition or restore fellowship with Him. Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,… Their deeds are sinful deeds, The corruption was not limited to isolated failures; sin characterized the conduct of the nation. Their actions revealed hearts turned from God and His standards. Mic 2:1-2 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds… and acts of violence are in their hands. Violence had become a deliberate practice, expressed through oppression, injustice, and harm against others. Their hands, meant to serve God and neighbor, were instruments of wrongdoing. Psa 58:2 No, in your hearts you devise injustice;… Their feet run to evil; Sin is pursued willingly and without restraint. The people had abandoned God’s ways, making wrongdoing the course of their lives. Pro 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift… they are swift to shed innocent blood. Violence, oppression, and unjust judgment marked a society in which the helpless were exploited and life was treated cheaply. Pro 6:17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed… Their thoughts are sinful thoughts; Their outward sins arose from hearts and minds set against God, revealing corruption at the source. Pro 24:9 A foolish scheme is sin, and a mocker is detestable to men. ruin and destruction lie in their wake. Their conduct brought devastation to others and invited God’s judgment upon the nation. Rom 3:16 ruin and misery lie in their wake, The way of peace they have not known, Israel’s leaders and people had abandoned the peace found in obedience to God, seeking security through human plans, foreign alliances, and idolatry. Their rebellion brought unrest rather than the wholeness God intended for His covenant people. Rom 3:17 and the way of peace they have not known.” and there is no justice in their tracks. Their conduct was marked by corruption, oppression, and disregard for God’s standards. Courts and rulers failed to protect the weak, revealing a nation that had rejected the righteousness required by the Law. Pro 8:20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths… They have turned them into crooked paths; Rather than walking in the straight way God had established, they deliberately shaped their lives around sin. Their choices distorted justice and led others into the same rebellion. Pro 2:15 whose paths are crooked and whose ways are devious. no one who treads on them will know peace. Those who follow such paths share their consequences: alienation from God, social disorder, and the loss of true peace. Peace belongs to those restored to God through righteousness, not to those who persist in wickedness. Isa 57:21 “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” Therefore justice is far from us, Israel’s sin had corrupted public life and separated the nation from the righteous order God required. Though called to reflect His justice—fair and righteous judgment aligned with God’s law—the people had embraced violence, deceit, and oppression, leaving the innocent without protection and wrongdoing unchecked. Hab 1:4 Therefore the law is paralyzed; justice never goes forth… and righteousness does not reach us. The people recognized that they were not enjoying the peace and security that accompany obedience to God. Their own rebellion had placed them beyond the blessings of righteous living and covenant faithfulness. Rom 3:10-12 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.… We hope for light, but there is darkness; They longed for deliverance, guidance, and restoration, yet their sin had brought spiritual and national darkness. Their condition was marked by confusion and the loss of God’s favor. Job 30:26 But when I hoped for good, evil came;… for brightness, but we walk in gloom. Instead of the hope they expected, they continued in distress and uncertainty. Apart from repentance, Israel could not escape the darkness produced by its rejection of God’s ways. Isa 50:10 Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice… Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall, Israel’s sin has left the people without moral direction or the ability to discern God’s way. Though they seek security, they move as those unable to find a path. Zep 1:17 I will bring such distress on mankind… groping like those without eyes. Their helplessness is complete. Having turned from righteousness and justice, they cannot see the truth that should guide them. Job 12:25 They grope in the darkness without light;… We stumble at midday as in the twilight; Even in conditions where light should make the way clear, they remain confused and fall. God’s revealed will has been rejected, and darkness marks their public and personal life. Deu 28:29 and at noon you will grope about like a blind man… among the vigorous we are like the dead. Though surrounded by life and strength, the nation is spiritually powerless. Sin has brought a condition of death that only God’s mercy and restoration can overcome. Psa 88:5 I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain… We all growl like bears and moan like doves. The people’s cries combine restless anger with helpless grief. Their society had become marked by violence, dishonesty, and the oppression of the innocent, leaving them distressed and unable to find relief. Isa 38:14 I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove.… We hope for justice, but find none, They desired righteous judgment and protection from wrongdoing, yet those responsible for maintaining justice had failed. The nation’s corruption had overturned the order God required among His people. Hab 1:4 Therefore the law is paralyzed; justice never goes forth… for salvation, but it is far from us. Deliverance seemed distant because their sins had separated them from the Lord. Their suffering was not merely political or social; it exposed their need for God to intervene and redeem them. Psa 119:155 Salvation is far from the wicked because they do not seek… For our transgressions are multiplied before You, Israel’s rebellion against God had become extensive and persistent, affecting both personal conduct and public life. Their guilt stood openly before the Lord, who had seen their rejection of His ways. Ezr 9:15 O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous!… and our sins testify against us. Their deeds supplied the evidence of their guilt. Violence, dishonesty, oppression, and injustice had exposed the nation’s unfaithfulness and explained why judgment had come. Jer 14:7 Although our iniquities testify against us, O LORD,… Our transgressions are indeed with us, The people could not dismiss their guilt as distant or accidental. The consequences of their rebellion remained present among them and had corrupted the life of the nation. Ezk 33:10 Now as for you, son of man, tell the house of Israel… and we know our iniquities: This confession recognizes deliberate wrongdoing and moral corruption. Such acknowledgment was necessary if Israel was to turn from sin and seek the Lord’s forgiveness and restoration. Jer 3:13 Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have rebelled… rebelling and denying the LORD, Israel’s sin was deliberate resistance to God’s authority and rejection of the covenant relationship He had established with them. Their history repeatedly showed this pattern, from the golden calf at Sinai to later idolatry and disobedience. Isa 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth… turning away from our God, The people had forsaken the Lord in heart and conduct, often pursuing foreign gods and alliances rather than trusting Him. Their departure from God produced spiritual unfaithfulness and national corruption. Jos 22:16 This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says:… speaking oppression and revolt, Injustice had become public and entrenched. The powerful oppressed the weak, while the nation’s words and actions reflected rebellion against the righteous order God required. Jer 6:28 All are hardened rebels, walking around as slanderers.… conceiving and uttering lies from the heart. Deceit originated within, revealing the corruption of the inner person. Falsehood was not accidental but planned and spoken, showing the need for repentance and a renewed heart. Psa 7:14 Behold, the wicked man travails with evil;… So justice is turned away, Israel’s leaders and people had abandoned the standards God gave for judging rightly. Those who should have defended the weak and punished wrongdoing instead allowed corruption and oppression to prevail. Amo 5:7 There are those who turn justice into wormwood… and righteousness stands at a distance. Conduct pleasing to God had been pushed aside. The nation’s public life no longer reflected His holiness, creating a clear separation between His will and their actions. Isa 46:13 I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away… For truth has stumbled in the public square, The places where disputes were settled and civic decisions were made had become ruled by falsehood. Truth could not stand because deceit shaped testimony, judgment, and public dealings. Amo 5:10 There are those who hate the one who reproves in the gate… and honesty cannot enter. Integrity was excluded from the nation’s affairs. Israel’s condition was not merely individual failure but a widespread rejection of faithful, upright conduct, leaving the people unable to establish justice on their own. Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house… Truth is missing, Isaiah depicts Judah as a society in which honesty, faithfulness, and obedience to God’s standards had largely disappeared. Public life was marked by corruption, violence, and self-interest, revealing the spiritual ruin that follows rejection of God’s rule. Jer 7:28 Therefore you must say to them, ‘This is the nation… and whoever turns from evil becomes prey. Those who refused to participate in evil became targets of exploitation and hostility. In a culture that protected wrongdoing, righteous people were treated as vulnerable outsiders rather than defended by the courts and community. Psa 37:14-15 The wicked have drawn the sword and bent the bow… The LORD looked and was displeased God was not unaware of Judah’s condition. He saw the oppression of the innocent and the failure of His people to practice the justice required by His covenant. His displeasure reflects His holy opposition to sin and injustice. Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;… that there was no justice. Judah’s leaders and courts had failed to protect the weak or punish evil fairly. Human rulers had abandoned their responsibility, preparing the way for the Lord Himself to act in righteousness and bring the justice they had neglected. Psa 82:2-4 How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality… He saw that there was no man; Israel’s sin had become so widespread that no righteous leader or representative could stand before God on behalf of the nation. Human effort could not remedy the injustice and rebellion that had brought judgment. Ezk 22:30 I searched for a man among them to repair the wall… He was amazed that there was no one to intercede. No prophet, priest, ruler, or other person was able to mediate for the people. Their need required action from God Himself. Jer 30:13 There is no one to plead your cause, no remedy… So His own arm brought salvation, The Lord intervened by His own power to accomplish deliverance when no human rescuer could be found. His saving work would ultimately be fulfilled through the Messiah. Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;… and His own righteousness sustained Him. God acted according to His perfect justice and faithfulness. His righteousness secured the salvation He provided and upheld His purposes for Israel and the nations. Isa 11:5 Righteousness will be the belt around His hips,… He put on righteousness like a breastplate, God arms Himself to act in perfect justice. As a breastplate guarded a soldier’s vital organs, His righteousness reveals the purity and certainty of His judgment. He does not overlook oppression, violence, or unfaithfulness, but intervenes according to His holy character. Eph 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth,… and the helmet of salvation on His head; Salvation belongs to the Lord and proceeds from His power. He comes to deliver His people from the consequences of sin and from those who oppose His purposes. The image presents Him as a divine warrior whose victory brings both rescue and final restoration. Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit… He put on garments of vengeance God’s vengeance is His righteous judgment against persistent evil. In Isaiah’s setting, Judah’s injustice and the oppression of the faithful had not escaped His notice. He would repay rebellion and vindicate those who had no human defender. Isa 63:1-4 Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah… and wrapped Himself in a cloak of zeal. God acts with unwavering commitment to His covenant, His righteousness, and His people. His zeal ensures that evil will not prevail and that His promised redemption will be accomplished. Psa 69:9 because zeal for Your house has consumed me,…
The Covenant of the RedeemerGod’s judgment is measured and righteous, answering rebellion with the judgment it deserves. His actions uphold His holiness and defend those harmed by wickedness. Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.” fury to His enemies, Those who set themselves against the Lord and oppress His people face His righteous anger. Their resistance is not merely against Israel but against God’s rule. Isa 66:15-16 For behold, the LORD will come with fire—… retribution to His foes, Judgment reaches both hostile nations and covenant breakers within Israel. No position, heritage, or power shields those who persist in defiance of God. Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time… and recompense to the islands. Even the distant coastlands lie within the reach of God’s authority. His justice extends beyond Jerusalem and Israel to every nation. Psa 72:10 May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute;… So shall they fear the name of the LORD God’s coming judgment and deliverance will bring recognition of His authority among the nations. His name reveals His character, holiness, and sovereign power. Psa 102:15 So the nations will fear the name of the LORD,… where the sun sets, and His glory where it rises. From west to east, the whole world will witness and acknowledge the glory of the LORD. The scope reaches beyond Israel to every land under heaven. Mal 1:11 For My name will be great among the nations,… For He will come like a raging flood, God will act with irresistible power against evil and against those who oppose His people. Like floodwaters sweeping forward, His judgment cannot be restrained. Nam 1:8 But with an overwhelming flood He will make an end… driven by the breath of the LORD. The LORD Himself directs this work by His Spirit. His power brings both judgment upon His enemies and deliverance for those who belong to Him. Isa 30:28 His breath is like a rushing torrent that rises to the neck.… “The Redeemer will come to Zion, The promised Messiah will come to Jerusalem as God’s deliverer for His people. He will rescue them from sin and restore the blessings of God’s covenant. Rom 11:26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:… to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,” Jacob represents Israel, the covenant people descended from the patriarch. The Redeemer’s salvation is received by those who turn from rebellion against God in genuine repentance. Ezk 18:30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you… declares the LORD. The promise rests on the authority of the LORD Himself. God’s declared purpose to send the Redeemer is certain and faithful. Jer 23:5-6 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,… “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. The LORD Himself establishes this covenant with Israel, binding His promises to the people He has redeemed. Their past rebellion does not cancel His purpose or faithfulness. Isa 61:8 For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery… “My Spirit will not depart from you, God promises His abiding presence with His people. His Spirit will remain to guide, strengthen, and preserve them in the restored relationship He has provided. Ezk 36:27 And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you… and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth God’s revealed truth will continue among His people. Those who receive His word are to speak it faithfully rather than abandon it. Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth…… or from the mouths of your children and grandchildren, The covenant blessings extend beyond one generation. Israel’s children and descendants are included in the continuing responsibility and privilege of knowing and declaring God’s word. Deu 4:9 Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves… from now on and forevermore,” The LORD’s commitment is permanent. His covenant purpose for His people will endure through every generation. Psa 115:18 But it is we who will bless the LORD, both now… says the LORD. The promise rests on the authority and unchanging faithfulness of the LORD. Mal 1:2 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask…… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
