Provision for Priests and Levites

The Levitical priests—indeed the whole tribe of Levi—

Levi was set apart from Israel’s other tribes for service at the tabernacle and, later, the temple. The priests descended from Aaron served at the altar, while other Levites assisted with the care, transport, and administration of the sanctuary.

When Canaan was divided among the tribes, Levi received no tribal territory. Instead, the Levites lived in designated cities throughout Israel, enabling them to carry out their duties and to instruct the people in God’s law.

that is their inheritance.

Their inheritance was the provision God appointed through His worship, rather than fields and vineyards. This arrangement showed that the tribe entrusted with Israel’s sacred service depended directly on the Lord’s provision.

Although they have no inheritance among their brothers,

The Levites received no tribal territory in Canaan because they were appointed for the service of the tabernacle and, later, the temple. Unlike the other tribes, their needs were supplied through the tithes and offerings brought by Israel, enabling them to carry out their responsibilities in worship, instruction, and the care of holy things.

Num 18:20 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance…

the LORD is their inheritance,

Their portion was the Lord Himself and the privileges of serving before Him. This arrangement distinguished the Levites from the other tribes and required Israel to support those whom God had assigned to His service.

as He promised them.

God fulfilled His covenant provision for the Levites by assigning them cities throughout Israel and providing for them through the offerings of the people. Their inheritance rested not in land or wealth but in the faithful provision of the Lord.

Israel’s priests received no tribal territory as an inheritance. The Lord provided for them through the gifts and sacrifices brought by the people, enabling them to devote themselves to the service of the sanctuary and the instruction of Israel.

Israel was to provide for the priests from the first and best portion of the harvest. Since the priests and Levites received no tribal territory as an inheritance, the Lord appointed these gifts as part of their provision while they served at the sanctuary. Grain, wine, and oil were essential products of the land and represented the Lord’s blessing upon His people. Giving the firstfruits acknowledged that the harvest belonged to God and that His servants were to be supported by the worshiping community.

and the first wool sheared from your flock.

Sheep supplied wool for garments and trade, making the first shearing another meaningful source of provision. The priestly families depended on such offerings because their duties before the Lord limited their ability to cultivate land or build ordinary estates. By setting aside the first wool, each household recognized God as the giver of both agricultural and livestock increase and honored His provision for those appointed to minister before Him.

For the LORD your God has chosen Levi and his sons

God set the tribe of Levi apart for service connected with Israel’s worship. Their loyalty to Moses during the golden calf rebellion confirmed their separation for this responsibility. From Levi’s family came the priests, descended from Aaron, while the remaining Levites assisted in the care and service of the tabernacle and later the temple.

out of all your tribes

Levi received no tribal territory like the other sons of Jacob. Instead, the Levites were assigned cities throughout Israel and supported by the tithes of the people. Their scattered presence enabled them to serve among all the tribes and to help preserve the worship and instruction God had given Israel.

Deu 10:8 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi…

to stand and minister in His name

The Levites served before the LORD under His authority, carrying out the duties appointed for the sanctuary. The priests offered sacrifices and taught God’s law, while the Levites assisted with the tabernacle, its furnishings, music, guards, and other appointed tasks.

The Levitical office continued throughout Israel’s covenant life and remained in effect as long as the tabernacle and temple services stood. Its priesthood pointed beyond itself to Jesus Christ, whose eternal priesthood provides the final and sufficient mediation between God and His people.

Psa 110:4 The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind…

Now if a Levite moves from any town of residence throughout Israel

The Levites lived in cities distributed among the tribal territories rather than possessing a tribal homeland of their own. Their scattered settlements enabled them to assist with Israel’s worship and instruction throughout the land. A Levite was not restricted to serving only in his home city and could leave it to serve at the central sanctuary.

to the place the LORD will choose,

Israel’s worship was to be centered at the sanctuary appointed by God, rather than conducted according to local preference. After the tabernacle’s earlier locations, this chosen place was established in Jerusalem, where the temple became the regular center of national worship.

A Levite who came to the central sanctuary was to carry out his duties under the LORD’s authority, joining in the ministry appointed for his tribe. His work included guarding and assisting at the sanctuary, teaching God’s law, and supporting Israel’s worship.

Levites who came from their towns to serve at the central sanctuary were to receive the same share of the sacred provisions as those already serving there. Their support came from Israel’s offerings because the tribe of Levi received no tribal territory as an inheritance.

Sorcery Forbidden

When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you,

Israel’s possession of Canaan rests on God’s covenant faithfulness, not on Israel’s strength or merit. The land promised to Abraham becomes the setting for Israel’s settled national life under God’s law.

Jos 1:11 Go through the camp and tell the people,…
Exo 23:30-31 Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you,…

do not imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.

The Canaanite peoples practiced idolatry, child sacrifice, divination, and other occult acts forbidden by God. Israel was not to absorb the religious customs of the land but to remain distinct as the people of the LORD.

Lev 20:23 You must not follow the statutes of the nations.…
Deu 12:30-31 be careful not to be ensnared by their ways…

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire,

Child sacrifice was practiced among Canaanite peoples, including rites associated with Molech. Israel was not to imitate worship that offered children to gain divine favor. God’s stopping of Abraham before Isaac was harmed showed that He did not desire human sacrifice.

practices divination or conjury,

Israel was not to seek direction through forbidden rituals, such as divination and conjury—attempts to gain insight or predict the future through supernatural means—or attempts to uncover hidden knowledge. God had revealed His will and would provide His prophets rather than leave His people dependent on pagan sources.

Attempts to obtain counsel from the dead were associated with pagan worship and false spiritual claims. God alone rules over life and death and had provided His word, prophets, and priesthood to guide Israel.

For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD.

Divination, sorcery, child sacrifice, and consulting the dead belonged to the religious life of the Canaanite peoples. God forbade Israel from seeking guidance or power through such practices, which rejected His authority and corrupted worship.

the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you.

Israel’s conquest of Canaan was God’s judgment on those nations and the fulfillment of His promise to give the land to Abraham’s descendants. Their removal also warned Israel that covenant unfaithfulness would bring judgment upon them as well.

You must be blameless

Israel was to reject the occult practices of the nations in Canaan and remain wholly devoted to the LORD. Blamelessness called for integrity, obedience, and undivided loyalty rather than sinless perfection.

Israel lived under the authority of the holy God who had redeemed them and entered into covenant with them. Their obedience set them apart from the surrounding peoples and reflected their accountability to Him. Christ, who was without sin, ultimately provides the righteousness by which believers stand blameless before God.

A Prophet Like Moses

The LORD your God

Israel’s covenant God would remain personally involved in guiding His people and establishing their leaders.

Moses pointed to a prophet who would share his unique authority as a mediator, teacher, and leader appointed by God.

This is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb

Horeb, also called Mount Sinai, was the place where the LORD gave His Law and established His covenant with Israel. There the people witnessed His holiness in smoke, fire, thunder, and trembling, and they recognized the danger of drawing near to the living God in their sinfulness.

Deu 5:27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says.…
Exo 20:19 “Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they said…

on the day of the assembly,

All Israel gathered before the mountain to hear God’s commands. The nation stood together as the covenant people, responsible to receive and obey the LORD’s word.

Deu 10:4 And the LORD wrote on the tablets what had been written…
Deu 4:10 The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb,…

when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire anymore, so that we will not die!”

Overwhelmed by God’s majesty, the people feared that continued direct exposure to His voice and the fire of His presence would bring death. They asked for a mediator to receive God’s word and deliver it to them, preparing the way for the prophetic office and ultimately for Christ, the perfect mediator between God and man.

Deu 5:25 But now, why should we die? For this great fire……
Deu 4:12 And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire.…
Heb 12:18-19 For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched…

Then the LORD said to me,

God reaffirmed to Moses what He had declared at Horeb, where Israel feared hearing His voice directly and asked that Moses receive His words for them. Moses served as God’s appointed mediator and leader, conveying His commands to the nation as they prepared to enter the land.

Deu 31:14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death…
Exo 19:9 The LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you…
Num 12:6 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…

“They have spoken well.

God approved Israel’s request for a mediator because their fear reflected the holiness and power they had witnessed at Sinai. Their need would be met through Moses and through the prophets God would later raise up, ultimately pointing to the promised Prophet like Moses.

Deu 5:28 And the LORD heard the words you spoke to me…
Exo 20:19 “Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they said…
Heb 12:19 to a trumpet blast or to a voice…

I will raise up for them a prophet like you

God promised Israel a prophet who would stand in a role comparable to Moses: speaking with divine authority, leading the people, and making God’s will known. Moses served as Israel’s lawgiver and mediator, and this promised prophet ultimately finds fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

Act 7:37 This is the same Moses who told the Israelites,…
Deu 34:10 Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel…
Num 12:6-8 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…

from among their brothers.

The prophet would arise from within Israel, sharing the nation’s heritage and covenant identity. Jesus was born as an Israelite from the tribe of Judah.

Act 3:22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up…
Deu 17:15 Appoint a king from among your brothers;…
Heb 2:17 For this reason He had to be made like His brothers…

I will put My words in his mouth,

The prophet would speak God’s message rather than his own ideas or authority. Jesus perfectly revealed the Father’s will in His teaching and ministry.

Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Isa 51:16 I have put My words in your mouth, and covered you……
Exo 4:12 “Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach”…

and he will tell them everything I command him.

The promised prophet would faithfully declare all that God required. Jesus fulfilled this role by making known God’s truth and commands to His people.

Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 14:24 Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words.…
Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,…

And I will hold accountable

God personally judges those who reject His revealed will. As He established His covenant with Israel, He made clear that obedience to His appointed messenger was not optional.

To listen meant to receive God’s word with faith and submission, not merely to hear it. Refusal brought guilt before the Lord.

that the prophet speaks

God raised up prophets to instruct, warn, and direct His people, beginning with Moses and continuing through those sent to Israel. This promise ultimately points to Christ, the prophet like Moses whom God sent to reveal His will perfectly.

Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Exo 7:1 The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God…

The prophet spoke as God’s representative, delivering the message entrusted to him rather than his own opinions or ideas.

Mat 7:22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord,…
Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…

But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name

Speaking for the Lord carried His authority and therefore required absolute truthfulness. A prophet who claimed divine authority without receiving God’s message treated His name with contempt and misled the people entrusted to his words.

Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Jer 23:21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run…
Ezk 13:7 Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying divination…

that I have not commanded him to speak,

Israel’s prophets were not free to invent messages, promote personal ambitions, or adjust God’s commands to suit public opinion. Their task was to faithfully deliver what God had given them.

Jer 23:32 “Indeed,” declares the LORD, “I am against those…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…
2Ch 18:21-22 And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit…

or to speak in the name of other gods,

Israel lived among nations devoted to many idols, and false prophets could draw the people toward the worship practices of surrounding cultures. Any message that honored another god directly violated Israel’s covenant loyalty to the Lord.

Deu 13:1-5 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…
Exo 20:3 You shall have no other gods before Me.

that prophet must be put to death.”

False prophecy was a capital offense because it threatened the spiritual life and covenant faithfulness of the entire nation. The penalty protected Israel from leaders who would use religious claims to turn the people from the true God.

Deu 17:2-7 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns…
Zec 13:3 And if anyone still prophesies, his father and mother…

You may ask in your heart,

Israel’s concern was legitimate: many voices claimed divine authority, and the people needed a reliable way to distinguish God’s word from human invention.

Pro 14:15 The simple man believes every word, but the prudent man…
2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith;…

“How can we recognize a message

God did not require His people to accept every prophetic claim without examination. A prophet’s message had to accord with God’s revealed truth and bear the marks of His authority.

that the LORD has not spoken?”

False prophets spoke presumptuously in the LORD’s name, often leading the nation toward idolatry and disobedience. God provided clear standards for exposing them, including whether what they foretold came to pass.

Ezk 13:7 Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying divination…
Jer 28:15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah,…
Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you…

When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD

Israel was to recognize that a prophet who claimed God’s authority was accountable to God’s truth. Such a claim carried serious weight because the prophet represented the LORD before the covenant community.

1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…
Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Jer 28:9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace,…

and the message does not come to pass or come true,

A prediction that failed showed that its source was not the God who rules history and accomplishes His purposes. Israel was not to shape its obedience, decisions, or hopes around unfulfilled predictions.

1Ki 22:28 But Micaiah replied, “If you ever return safely,…
1Sa 3:19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him,…
Jer 1:12 “You have observed correctly,” said the LORD,…

that is a message the LORD has not spoken.

The failure of the message exposed the prophet as unauthorized. God did not leave His people without a clear safeguard against those who claimed revelation for personal influence or gain.

1Ki 22:23 So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit…
Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Jer 28:15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah,…

The prophet has spoken presumptuously.

He had taken upon himself an authority God had not given, speaking his own words while attaching the LORD’s name to them.

Deu 17:12 But the man who acts presumptuously, refusing to listen…
Num 15:30 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Psa 19:13 Keep Your servant also from willful sins;…

Do not be afraid of him.

The people were not to be intimidated by his claims, threats, or reputation, but were to reject his message and remain faithful to the LORD.

Jer 1:8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you…
Ezk 2:6 But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
