After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.1Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα περιεπάτει Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ οὐ γὰρ ἤθελεν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περιπατεῖν ὅτι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι
Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.2ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων σκηνοπηγία
So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.3εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν ἵνα καὶ οἱ μαθηταί σου θεωρήσουσιν «τὰ ἔργα» σοῦ ποιεῖς
For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”4οὐδεὶς γάρ τι ἐν κρυπτῷ ποιεῖ καὶ ζητεῖ αὐτὸς ἐν παρρησίᾳ εἶναι εἰ ταῦτα ποιεῖς φανέρωσον σεαυτὸν τῷ κόσμῳ
For not even his brothers believed in him.5οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν
Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.6Λέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς καιρὸς ἐμὸς οὔπω πάρεστιν δὲ καιρὸς ὑμέτερος πάντοτέ ἐστιν ἕτοιμος
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.7οὐ δύναται κόσμος μισεῖν ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δὲ μισεῖ ὅτι ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρά ἐστιν
You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”8ὑμεῖς ἀνάβητε εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀναβαίνω εἰς τὴν ἑορτὴν ταύτην ὅτι ἐμὸς καιρὸς οὔπω πεπλήρωται
After saying this, he remained in Galilee.9Ταῦτα δὲ εἰπὼν αὐτὸς* ἔμεινεν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ
But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.10Ὡς δὲ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν τότε καὶ αὐτὸς ἀνέβη οὐ φανερῶς ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐν κρυπτῷ
The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”11Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ ἔλεγον Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος
And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”12καὶ γογγυσμὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ ἦν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς ὄχλοις οἱ μὲν ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἀγαθός ἐστιν Ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον Οὔ ἀλλὰ πλανᾷ τὸν ὄχλον
Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.13Οὐδεὶς μέντοι παρρησίᾳ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων
About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.14Ἤδη δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκεν
The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”15ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδεν μὴ μεμαθηκώς
So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.16Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με
If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.17ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ἐγὼ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ
The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.18 ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”19Οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν* ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι
The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”20Ἀπεκρίθη ὄχλος Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι
Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.21Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε
Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.22διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστὶν ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον
If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?23εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει (ὁ) ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ νόμος Μωϋσέως ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”24μὴ κρίνετε κατ’ ὄψιν ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνετε*
Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?25Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι
And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?26καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν Μή‿ ποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστός
But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”27ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν δὲ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν
So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.28Ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων Ἰησοῦς καὶ λέγων Κἀμὲ οἴδατε καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα ἀλλ’ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς πέμψας με ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”29ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν ὅτι παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰμι κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν
So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.30Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πιάσαι καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὴν χεῖρα ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ὥρα αὐτοῦ
Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”31Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἔλεγον Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ μὴ πλείονα σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν
The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.32Ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν
Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.33εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι χρόνον μικρὸν μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με
You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”34ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν
The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?35Εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν μὴ εἰς τὴν Διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας
What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”36τίς ἐστιν λόγος οὗτος ὃν εἶπεν Ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με] καὶ Ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.37Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν λέγων Ἐάν τις διψᾷ ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”38 πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ καθὼς εἶπεν γραφή Ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος
Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.39τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν οὔπω γὰρ ἦν Πνεῦμα ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη
When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”40Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου οὖν ἀκούσαντες τῶν λόγων τούτων ἔλεγον (ὅτι) Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς προφήτης
Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?41Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστός Οἱ δὲ ἔλεγον Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας Χριστὸς ἔρχεται
Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”42οὐχ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυὶδ ἔρχεται Χριστός
So there was a division among the people over him.43Σχίσμα οὖν ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ δι’ αὐτόν
Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.44τινὲς δὲ ἤθελον ἐξ αὐτῶν πιάσαι αὐτόν ἀλλ’ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας
The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”45Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν
The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”46Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται Οὐδέποτε ἐλάλησεν οὕτως ἄνθρωπος 〈ὡς οὗτος λαλεῖ ἄνθρωπος〉
The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?47Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε
Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?48μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων
But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”49ἀλλὰ ὄχλος οὗτος μὴ γινώσκων τὸν νόμον ἐπάρατοί εἰσιν
Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,50Λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν [τὸ] πρότερον εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν
“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”51Μὴ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ πρῶτον παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ
They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”52Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ ἐραύνησον καὶ ἴδε ὅτι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας προφήτης οὐκ ἐγείρεται
[[They went each to his own house,53Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν* ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ
