After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.1After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee, since He did not want to travel in Judea because the Jews were trying to kill Him.
Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.2The Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,
So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.3so His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples can see Your works that You are doing.
For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”4For no one does anything in secret while he's seeking public recognition. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world."
For not even his brothers believed in him.5(For not even His brothers believed in Him.)
Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.6Jesus told them, "My time has not yet arrived, but your time is always at hand.
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.7The world cannot hate you, but it does hate Me because I testify about it--that its deeds are evil.
You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”8Go up to the festival yourselves. I'm not going up to the festival yet, because My time has not yet fully come."
After saying this, he remained in Galilee.9After He had said these things, He stayed in Galilee.
But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.10After His brothers had gone up to the festival, then He also went up, not openly but secretly.
The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”11The Jews were looking for Him at the festival and saying, "Where is He?"
And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”12And there was a lot of discussion about Him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He's a good man." Others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He's deceiving the people."
Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.13Still, nobody was talking publicly about Him because they feared the Jews.
About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.14When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple complex and began to teach.
The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”15Then the Jews were amazed and said, "How does He know the Scriptures, since He hasn't been trained?"
So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.16Jesus answered them, "My teaching isn't Mine but is from the One who sent Me.
If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.17If anyone wants to do His will, he will understand whether the teaching is from God or if I am speaking on My own.
The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.18The one who speaks for himself seeks his own glory. But He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”19Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law! Why do you want to kill Me?""
The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”20You have a demon!" the crowd responded. "Who wants to kill You?"
Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.21"I did one work, and you are all amazed," Jesus answered.
Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.22"Consider this: Moses has given you circumcision--not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers--and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?23If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses won't be broken, are you angry at Me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath?
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”24Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment."
Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?25Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the man they want to kill?
And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?26Yet, look! He's speaking publicly and they're saying nothing to Him. Can it be true that the authorities know He is the Messiah?
But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”27But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where He is from."
So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.28As He was teaching in the temple complex, Jesus cried out, "You know Me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on My own, but the One who sent Me is true. You don't know Him;
I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”29I know Him because I am from Him, and He sent Me."
So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.30Then they tried to seize Him. Yet no one laid a hand on Him because His hour had not yet come.
Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”31However, many from the crowd believed in Him and said, "When the Messiah comes, He won't perform more signs than this man has done, will He?"
The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple police to arrest Him.
Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.33Then Jesus said, "I am only with you for a short time. Then I'm going to the One who sent Me.
You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”34You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come."
The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?35Then the Jews said to one another, "Where does He intend to go so we won't find Him? He doesn't intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does He?
What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”36What is this remark He made: 'You will look for Me, and you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come?"
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.37On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, he should come to Me and drink!
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”38The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him."
Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.39He said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been received because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”40When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, "This really is the Prophet!"
Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?41Others said, "This is the Messiah!" But some said, "Surely the Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does He?
Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”42Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David once lived?"
So there was a division among the people over him.43So a division occurred among the crowd because of Him.
Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.44Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”45Then the temple police came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why haven't you brought Him?"
The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”46The police answered, "No man ever spoke like this!"
The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?47Then the Pharisees responded to them: "Are you fooled too?
Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?48Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”49But this crowd, which doesn't know the law, is accursed!"
Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,50Nicodemus--the one who came to Him previously, being one of them--said to them, "
“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”51Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he's doing, does it?""
They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”52You aren't from Galilee too, are you?" they replied. "Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee."
[[They went each to his own house,53So each one went to his house.
