Berean Study Bible The River of LifeJohn’s vision continues under the guidance of an angelic messenger, who reveals the completed order of the new creation. Rev 21:9-10 Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls…… a river of the water of life, A real river proceeds through the New Jerusalem, portraying the abundant and eternal life God provides for His redeemed people. Its life-giving flow recalls God’s original provision in Eden and fulfills the promise of restoration. Ezk 47:1-9 Then the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple,… as clear as crystal, Its transparent purity reflects a creation untouched by sin, death, defilement, or decay. Rev 4:6 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,… flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb The river’s source is the single throne shared by God and the Lamb, showing their united rule and the divine origin of eternal life. The Lamb, Jesus Christ, reigns as the crucified and victorious Savior. Ezk 47:1-2 Then the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple,… down the middle of the main street of the city. The river of the water of life runs through the center of the New Jerusalem, showing that God’s life-giving presence fills and sustains the city. The redeemed live in direct fellowship with Him, and His provision is available throughout the eternal city. Ezk 47:1-2 Then the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple,… On either side of the river stood a tree of life, The tree of life, barred from humanity after the fall, appears again in the restored creation. Its presence marks the complete reversal of sin’s curse and the permanent restoration of life with God. The tree’s position along the river pictures abundant provision for all who dwell in the city. Gen 2:9 Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree… bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. Its continual fruitfulness reflects the fullness and unfailing nature of God’s provision. The twelve kinds of fruit correspond to the completed people of God, gathered from Israel and the nations, who share eternally in the blessings of the new creation. Ezk 47:12 Along both banks of the river, fruit trees… And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. The nations are fully restored from the effects of sin, division, and death. The leaves signify enduring wholeness and peace in God’s kingdom, where former enemies live together under the rule of Christ. Isa 19:22-25 And the LORD will strike Egypt with a plague;… No longer will there be any curse. The judgment brought by Adam’s sin, including death, sorrow, and alienation from God, will be fully removed. In the new creation, sin and its consequences will have no place, and creation will stand restored under God’s righteous order. Gen 3:17-19 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened… The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, God the Father and the Lamb, Jesus Christ, will reign from the New Jerusalem in perfect unity. Their throne establishes the city as the center of divine rule and the permanent dwelling place of God with His redeemed people. Jer 3:17 At that time they will call Jerusalem… and His servants will worship Him. Those redeemed by Christ will serve God without sin, rebellion, or weariness. Their worship will express continual devotion, obedience, and fellowship with the One who has redeemed and restored them. Rev 7:15 For this reason, they are before the throne of God… They will see His face, Redeemed believers will dwell in the immediate presence of God in the new creation. The barrier caused by sin will be removed, and those made holy through Christ will behold Him without fear or separation. This is the full realization of salvation and the eternal fellowship for which God created His people. Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. and His name will be on their foreheads. God’s name will openly identify His servants as His own. Like the priestly inscription of consecration, it marks them as holy and set apart for His service. Unlike the mark of the beast, this name signifies permanent belonging to God, His protection, and their unchanging place in His kingdom. Rev 14:1 Then I looked and saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion… There will be no more night in the city, There will be no more night in the city because the New Jerusalem will exist in the unhindered presence of God. Darkness, danger, sin, and separation from God will be removed permanently. Rev 21:25 Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day,… and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. Earthly sources of light will no longer be necessary because the glory of God will fill the city and provide all that its inhabitants need. Rev 21:23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it… For the Lord God will shine on them, God will dwell openly with the redeemed, continually revealing His holiness, truth, and favor without interruption. Num 6:25-26 may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you… and they will reign forever and ever. Those redeemed by Christ will share in His everlasting kingdom, exercising the restored dominion God intended for humanity from the beginning. Dan 7:18 But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom…
Jesus Is ComingJohn’s vision concludes with the same angelic messenger who had shown him the final scenes of God’s judgment and the New Jerusalem. The angel confirms that the revelation comes from God and carries His authority. Dan 9:21-22 while I was still praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen… “These words are faithful and true. Everything John has recorded will be fulfilled exactly as God has revealed it. The promised restoration of creation, the judgment of evil, and the eternal reign of Christ are certain. 2Sa 7:28 And now, O Lord GOD, You are God! Your words are true,… The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, God directed the prophets throughout Scripture and remains the source of all true revelation. The message given to John stands in harmony with the prophetic witness God had given through earlier servants. Num 16:22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said, “O God,… has sent His angel God entrusted the angel to communicate this revelation to John, showing that the events described are not human speculation but part of His sovereign plan. Act 12:11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure… to show His servants The revelation was given for Christ’s people, who are called to understand God’s purposes and remain faithful amid opposition and suffering. Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan… what must soon take place.” The events set in motion by Christ’s first coming would unfold according to God’s timetable, culminating in His visible return, the final judgment, and the establishment of His eternal kingdom. Mat 24:6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars,… “Behold, I am coming soon. Jesus closes Revelation with the assurance that His return is certain and near. His coming will be sudden and visible, bringing the events revealed throughout the book to their fulfillment. The promise sustained the first Christians through persecution and calls believers in every age to live in readiness for the Lord’s return. Rev 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have,… Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book.” God’s favor rests on those who receive Revelation as His true revelation and remain faithful to its warnings, promises, and commands. The book unveils Christ’s final victory, the judgment of the wicked, and the eternal reward of His people, giving believers reason to endure faithfully until He comes. Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words… And I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. John closes the book by personally affirming that he received the revelations recorded throughout it. As an eyewitness of what was shown and spoken to him, he bears authoritative testimony to the certainty of God’s revealed plan. Rev 1:1-2 This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him… And when I had heard and seen them, Having reached the end of the visions, John again emphasizes that the revelation came through both sight and sound. The message was not imagined or invented but given to him through the angelic messenger. Act 22:14-15 Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you… I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. Overwhelmed by all he had witnessed, John repeated the error he had made earlier by directing worship toward the angel. Though angels serve in God’s presence and carry His messages, they remain created servants; worship belongs to God alone. Rev 19:10 So I fell at his feet to worship him. But he told me… But he said to me, “Do not do that! The angel stops John from bowing before him. Though angels serve in God’s presence and carry His messages, they are created servants and must never receive worship. Act 10:25-26 As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him… I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, The angel identifies himself with John and the prophets as one who serves God. John stands in continuity with the prophets who faithfully received and proclaimed God’s revelation. Rev 19:10 So I fell at his feet to worship him. But he told me… and with those who keep the words of this book. All who obey the revelation given in this book belong among God’s servants. They are called to remain faithful to Christ despite deception, persecution, and the pressures of the world. Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words… Worship God!” Worship belongs to God alone. The closing command rejects every form of idolatry and directs John, the churches, and all believers to honor the Creator and Judge revealed throughout Revelation. Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:… Then he told me, John continues his exchange with the angel who has been showing him the final visions of God’s judgment and restoration. The angel speaks with divine authority as God’s appointed messenger. Rev 17:1 Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls… “Do not seal up the words of prophecy in this book, John is commanded to preserve Revelation openly for the churches. Its warnings, promises, judgments, and descriptions of Christ’s return were to be read, understood, and kept by believers rather than hidden for a distant generation. Dan 12:4 But you, Daniel, shut up these words and seal the book… because the time is near. The events foretold had entered their final prophetic era through Christ’s death, resurrection, ascension, and promised return. The certainty of God’s coming judgment and kingdom gave immediate importance to the book for John’s readers and for every generation awaiting the visible return of Jesus Christ. Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words… Let the unrighteous continue to be unrighteous, At Christ’s return, the opportunity for repentance will have ended. Those who persist in rejecting God will remain under judgment, their rebellion confirmed. Dan 12:10 Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined… and the vile continue to be vile; Moral corruption will not be removed from those who have chosen evil. The separation between the wicked and the redeemed will be final and irreversible. Jer 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?… let the righteous continue to practice righteousness, Those justified by Christ will be shown to belong to Him by lives marked by obedience. Their righteous conduct does not earn salvation but reflects the work of God in them. 1Jn 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you also know… and the holy continue to be holy.” God’s people, set apart through Christ, will remain holy in His presence forever. The coming judgment will reveal the settled eternal condition of every person. 1Pe 1:15-16 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy… “Behold, I am coming soon, Christ announces His certain and impending return, calling His people to live watchfully in light of the end of the present age. Rev 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have,… and My reward is with Me, At His return, Christ will openly bring the recompense prepared for His servants, including the fulfillment of their hope in His kingdom and presence. Isa 40:10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might,… to give to each one according to what he has done. Every person will stand before Christ in judgment. Works reveal the reality of faith or unbelief, and God’s judgment will be perfectly just. Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.” I am the Alpha and the Omega, Jesus declares His eternal sovereignty over all things. He stands before creation and remains Lord over its final renewal. Rev 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,… the First and the Last, He is unchanging and supreme over history, life, death, and judgment. No age lies outside His authority or presence. Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.… the Beginning and the End.” All creation has its source in Christ, and all history moves toward the fulfillment of His purposes. His return will bring God’s redemptive plan to its appointed completion. Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times… Blessed are those who wash their robes, Cleansed from sin through Christ’s sacrificial blood, they are made fit to stand before God. The image recalls the cleansing required of those who approached God’s presence and points to the complete purification granted to the redeemed. Psa 51:7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean;… so that they may have the right to the tree of life What humanity lost through sin in Eden is restored through Christ. The tree of life represents the eternal life and unbroken fellowship with God given to those He has redeemed. Gen 2:9 Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree… and may enter the city by its gates. The gates of the New Jerusalem admit those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Their entrance marks their permanent place in God’s kingdom, while all sin and rebellion remain outside. Isa 26:2 Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter… But outside are the dogs, Those excluded from the New Jerusalem remain under God’s judgment, separated from the holiness and joy of His presence. Dogs, commonly regarded as unclean and scavenging animals, portray people marked by moral uncleanness and rebellion. Mat 7:6 Do not give dogs what is holy; do not… the sorcerers, Sorcery involved seeking power, guidance, or control through occult practices rather than submitting to God. Such practices were closely tied to pagan worship and deception. Exo 22:18 You must not allow a sorceress to live. the sexually immoral, Sexual sin violates God’s design for marriage and often reflects the broader unfaithfulness to God portrayed throughout Revelation. 1Co 6:9-10 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral… the murderers, Murder reveals contempt for human life, which God created in His image. The judgment of murderers displays God’s justice toward those who destroy life without repentance. Exo 20:13 You shall not murder. the idolaters, Idolaters give worship and loyalty to created things, false gods, or the beast rather than to the Creator. No rival allegiance can enter the city where God reigns. Exo 20:3-5 You shall have no other gods before Me.… and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. Those who embrace deceit follow the pattern of Satan rather than the truth of God. The city belongs to those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life, while all who persist in falsehood remain outside. Pro 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD… “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony for the churches. The risen Christ personally confirms the authority of Revelation. His angel delivered the message to John for the instruction, warning, and encouragement of the seven churches and all believers who would receive their testimony. Rev 1:1 This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him… I am the Root and the Offspring of David, Jesus is both David’s Creator and his descendant according to the flesh. He fulfills God’s covenant promise that David’s royal line would lead to an everlasting kingdom, establishing His rightful identity as the promised Messiah and King. Rev 5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold… the bright Morning Star.” Jesus brings the certain hope of a new day after the darkness of judgment. His coming marks the fulfillment of God’s purposes and the beginning of everlasting life for His people. Rev 2:28 And I will give him the morning star. The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” The Holy Spirit and the Church unite in longing for the return of Jesus Christ. The bride, prepared for the marriage of the Lamb, joins the Spirit in calling for the fulfillment of God’s final purposes. Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send… Let the one who hears say, “Come!” Everyone who receives the message of Revelation is invited to share in this expectation, extend the invitation to others, and join the prayer for Christ’s return. The promise of His coming belongs to the whole Church. Heb 3:15 Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden hearts… And let the one who is thirsty come, The invitation then turns to those who recognize their need for God’s salvation. No person is excluded who comes to Christ in faith. Jhn 7:37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up… and the one who desires the water of life drink freely. Eternal life is offered without price through Christ. The water of life speaks of the full and lasting life God gives to all who receive His grace. Rev 21:6 And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega,…
Nothing May Be Added or RemovedJohn solemnly places this warning before all who receive Revelation, whether by public reading or personal hearing. The book carries God’s revealed message concerning Christ’s return, final judgment, the defeat of evil, and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom. Rev 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words… If anyone adds to them, No person may alter, expand, or reshape the revelation God gave. In a time when false teachers and imperial pressures threatened the churches, believers were to preserve the message as it had been delivered. Deu 4:2 You must not add to or subtract from what I command you… God will add to him the plagues described in this book. Those who corrupt God’s revelation place themselves under the judgments Revelation describes. The book’s plagues portray God’s righteous judgment upon rebellion, deception, and those who oppose His rule. Rev 15:1 Then I saw another great and marvelous sign in heaven:… And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, Revelation’s message is not to be diminished, ignored, or edited to fit human preference. Its prophecies reveal Christ’s final victory, the judgment of the wicked, and the eternal reign of God. Deu 4:2 You must not add to or subtract from what I command you… God will take away his share in the tree of life The tree of life appears in the restored creation as the provision of eternal life for God’s redeemed people. Removal from it means the loss of any claim to the life and blessing promised in the new creation. Gen 3:22-24 Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become… and the holy city, The holy city is the New Jerusalem, the eternal dwelling place of God with His people. Exclusion from the city means exclusion from God’s presence, fellowship, and inheritance. Rev 21:2 I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down… which are described in this book. Revelation closes with the realities it has revealed: judgment, resurrection, the new heaven and earth, the New Jerusalem, and everlasting life. The warning guards the integrity of the revelation God has given. Rev 1:19 Therefore write down the things you have seen,… He who testifies to these things says, Jesus Christ confirms the reliability of all John has recorded. As the risen Lord and faithful witness, He alone possesses full authority to reveal God’s final purposes for judgment, redemption, and the restoration of creation. Rev 1:2 who testifies to everything he saw. This is the word of God… “Yes, I am coming soon.” Christ personally promises His visible return. His coming will complete the events revealed in the book: the defeat of evil, the judgment of the dead, and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom. The certainty of His return calls for readiness and faithfulness. Rev 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have,… Amen. John affirms the certainty of Christ’s promise. Amen means “truly” or “so be it.” God’s purposes will be fulfilled exactly as He has declared. 2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.… Come, Lord Jesus! John answers Christ’s promise with the prayer of the church, “Come, Lord,” echoing the Aramaic Maranatha, longing for the day when the Lord returns to bring justice, end sin and death, and dwell with His people forever. 1Co 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a curse… The grace of the Lord Jesus Jesus Christ is the source of salvation and sustaining strength for His people. His grace rests on His completed work in redemption and remains sufficient for believers as they await His return. 2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God… be with all the saints. The blessing extends to the whole church, including every believer set apart for God through faith in Christ. Revelation closes with assurance that Christ’s grace preserves His people through suffering, judgment, and the final fulfillment of God’s kingdom. Eph 1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith… Amen. The closing affirmation—“Amen,” meaning “truly” or “so be it”—expresses confidence that God will accomplish all He has promised. Jud 1:25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
