A Prayer for Deliverance

A Psalm of Asaph.

Asaph, a Levite appointed by David for temple worship, wrote in the context of Israel’s covenant relationship with God. The psalm mourns the national catastrophe that followed Judah’s rebellion and God’s judgment.

Psa 50:1 A Psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God the LORD…
Psa 73:1 A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel…
Psa 82:1 A Psalm of Asaph. God presides in the divine assembly;…

The nations, O God, have invaded Your inheritance;

Foreign armies, chiefly Babylon, entered the land God had given Israel and claimed as His own. Their invasion showed that Judah’s security rested not in its walls or armies but in obedience to the Lord.

Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down…
Psa 94:5 They crush Your people, O LORD; they oppress Your heritage.
Ezk 36:5 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

they have defiled Your holy temple

The Babylonian forces desecrated and destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, the place God had chosen for His name to dwell among His people. Its ruin marked the severity of God’s judgment against persistent idolatry and disobedience.

Psa 74:7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;…
2Ch 36:14 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people…
Dan 11:31 His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress.…

and reduced Jerusalem to rubble.

Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, leaving its homes, walls, and sanctuary devastated. The city’s destruction brought public shame and deep grief, yet the prayer anticipates God’s mercy and eventual restoration of His people.

Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…
2Ki 25:9-10 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…

They have given the corpses of Your servants as food to the birds of the air,

Jerusalem’s destruction left many of God’s people slain and unburied, a grievous humiliation in Israel. The scene reflects the covenant judgment brought upon the nation through its enemies, likely during the Babylonian invasion.

Deu 28:26 Your corpses will be food for all the birds of the air…
Jer 7:33 The corpses of this people will become food for the birds…
1Sa 17:46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand.…

the flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.

Those who belonged to the Lord suffered amid the nation’s fall, showing that the calamity reached even the faithful. Their treatment revealed the depth of Jerusalem’s disgrace and moved the psalmist to appeal for God’s mercy, vindication, and restoration.

Ezk 39:4 On the mountains of Israel you will fall…
Ezk 32:4 I will abandon you on the land and hurl you…
Jer 15:3 I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers,…

They have poured out their blood like water

Jerusalem’s defenders and inhabitants were slaughtered in great numbers, most likely during the Babylonian destruction of the city in 586 BC. The bloodshed reveals the severity of God’s judgment upon a people who had long resisted His commands. Blood that belonged in sacred offerings was instead spilled in violence, marking the city’s defilement and ruin.

Ezk 24:7-8 For the blood she shed is still within her;…
Lam 4:13 But this was for the sins of her prophets…
Ezk 22:2-4 “As for you, son of man, will you judge her?”…

all around Jerusalem,

The devastation extended beyond the walls into the surrounding areas. Jerusalem, the center of Israel’s worship and Davidic rule, lay exposed to its enemies. Its fall showed that the city’s sacred history did not shield it from judgment when the nation persisted in rebellion.

Isa 29:3 I will camp in a circle around you; I will besiege you…
2Ki 25:1-2 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Jer 52:4-5 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…

and there is no one to bury the dead.

So complete was the destruction that no survivors remained able to perform the customary duty of burial. Bodies left exposed testified to defeat, exile, and disgrace, while the land itself bore witness to the consequences of Israel’s unfaithfulness.

Jer 14:16 And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown…
Jer 16:4 They will not be mourned or buried, but will lie…
Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread…

We have become a reproach to our neighbors,

Jerusalem’s destruction and the desecration of the temple exposed Judah to the contempt of surrounding nations. Israel’s defeat was seen as evidence that the God of Israel had abandoned His people, though it was in fact His judgment for covenant unfaithfulness.

Psa 44:13 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors…
Psa 80:6 You make us contend with our neighbors; our enemies mock us.
Deu 28:37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule…

a scorn and derision to those around us.

Neighboring peoples mocked the suffering of Jerusalem and treated its ruin as an occasion for celebration. Their response added humiliation to Israel’s grief and foreshadowed the rejection and scorn Christ would bear for His people.

Jer 20:8 For whenever I speak, I cry out; I proclaim violence…
Lam 3:14 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song…
Psa 123:3-4 Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy, …

How long, O LORD?

Amid Jerusalem’s devastation and the reproach of the nations, the psalmist cries for God to end His discipline and restore His people. Israel’s suffering had continued long enough to make God’s promised mercy seem distant, yet the appeal rests on confidence that the LORD remains faithful to His covenant.

Psa 13:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD?…
Psa 89:46 How long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever?…
Hab 1:2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help…

Will You be angry forever?

God’s anger against Israel arose from real sin, idolatry, and rebellion, not from indifference or injustice. The question seeks forgiveness and restoration, trusting that His judgment is purposeful and that He does not abandon His people permanently.

Psa 85:5 Will You be angry with us forever? Will You draw out…
Jer 3:12 Go, proclaim this message toward the north:…
Psa 103:9 He will not always accuse us, nor harbor His anger forever.

Will Your jealousy burn like fire?

The LORD demands the exclusive worship and loyalty that belong to Him alone. Israel’s unfaithfulness had provoked His holy jealousy, bringing judgment like consuming fire. The urgent request recognizes the seriousness of their sin and pleads for God to turn from wrath and act for the honor of His name.

Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able…
Zep 3:8 Therefore wait for Me,” declares the LORD, “until the day…
Deu 4:24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You,

Israel’s surrounding nations worshiped false gods and often acted as instruments of violence against God’s people. Though the Lord had used foreign powers to discipline Israel, those nations remained accountable for their pride, cruelty, and rejection of Him. The psalmist appeals for God to defend His name and judge those who persist in opposition to His rule.

Jer 10:25 For they have devoured Jacob; they have consumed him…
2Th 1:8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…
Psa 9:17 The wicked will return to Sheol—all the nations…

on the kingdoms that refuse to call on Your name,

Nations are responsible before God for their worship and conduct. To call on His name is to recognize His authority and depend on Him rather than idols or human power. The prayer looks beyond Israel’s immediate suffering to the day when God will establish justice and every nation will answer to Him.

Isa 64:7 No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You.…
Psa 53:4 Will the workers of iniquity never learn?…
Psa 14:4 Will the workers of iniquity never learn?…

for they have devoured Jacob

Israel’s enemies had violently consumed the nation through invasion, slaughter, and exile. The Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC vividly fulfilled this pattern of judgment after generations of covenant unfaithfulness.

Jer 10:25 For they have devoured Jacob; they have consumed him…
Mic 3:3 You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off…
Psa 14:4 Will the workers of iniquity never learn?…

and devastated his homeland.

Judah’s cities, fields, and Jerusalem itself were left desolate, including the temple that stood at the center of Israel’s worship. The ruin of the land brought national grief, yet God’s judgment did not cancel His promises to restore His people.

Isa 1:7 Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire.…
Jer 12:11 They have made it a desolation; desolate before Me…
Ezk 36:4 therefore, O mountains of Israel,…

Do not hold past sins against us;

Israel acknowledges that present judgment is connected to generations of covenant unfaithfulness. The plea does not deny guilt but appeals for God to forgive rather than continue dealing with His people according to their accumulated rebellion.

Psa 130:3-4 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities,…
Isa 43:25 I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions…
Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…

let Your compassion come quickly,

Jerusalem’s devastation has left the nation without strength or human remedy. God’s mercy is their only hope, and they ask Him to act without delay according to His faithful character.

Dan 9:18 Incline Your ear, O my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see…
Dan 9:19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!…
Psa 102:13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,…

for we are brought low.

The people have been humiliated by invasion, destruction, and loss. Their low condition exposes both the consequences of sin and their complete dependence on the Lord to restore them.

Psa 142:6 Listen to my cry, for I am brought quite low.…
Psa 116:6 The LORD preserves the simplehearted; I was helpless,…
Psa 44:25 For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies…

Help us, O God of our salvation,

Israel’s only hope was the Lord, who had delivered His people throughout their history. Their distress was tied to their sin, yet they appealed to the God who had bound Himself to them in covenant mercy.

1Ch 16:35 Then cry out: ‘Save us, O God of our salvation;……
Psa 85:4 Restore us, O God of our salvation, and put away…
Psa 65:5 With awesome deeds of righteousness You answer us, O God…

for the glory of Your name;

The request looked beyond relief from suffering. If God rescued His people, the nations would see that He alone is faithful, powerful, and holy.

1Ch 16:29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name;…
Psa 115:1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name be the glory…
Jhn 12:28 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:……

deliver us and atone for our sins,

The devastation described in the psalm was understood as the consequence of national sin. Deliverance required God’s forgiveness and the removal of guilt, which Israel could not accomplish on its own.

Lev 16:30 because on this day atonement will be made…
Exo 32:30 The next day Moses said to the people…
Psa 130:8 And He will redeem Israel from all iniquity.

for the sake of Your name.

God’s honor was the basis of the appeal. His rescue of His repentant people would uphold the reputation of the Lord who judges sin yet remains faithful to His covenant.

Psa 106:8 Yet He saved them for the sake of His name,…
1Sa 12:22 Indeed, for the sake of His great name…
Ezk 36:22-23 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…

Why should the nations ask, “Where is their God?”

Jerusalem’s ruin and the suffering of God’s people gave Israel’s enemies occasion to mock the Lord as though He were unable to save. The psalmist appeals to God’s honor, asking Him to show that Israel’s calamity has not diminished His rule or faithfulness.

Psa 115:2 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Jol 2:17 Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep…
Psa 42:10 Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me……

Before our eyes,

The request is for an open display of God’s action, not a hidden or distant answer. Those who had witnessed destruction and violence needed to see His justice plainly.

Psa 118:23 This is from the LORD, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Psa 48:8 As we have heard, so we have seen in the city of the LORD of Hosts…
Psa 98:2 The LORD has proclaimed His salvation…

make known among the nations Your vengeance

God’s judgment on Israel’s enemies would reveal His righteousness and authority. Their cruelty would not be ignored, and His response would silence the nations’ contempt.

Ezk 38:23 I will magnify and sanctify Myself, and I will reveal Myself…
Deu 32:41 When I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand grasps it…
Jer 51:11 Sharpen the arrows! Fill the quivers! The LORD has aroused…

for the bloodshed of Your servants.

God’s servants had been killed in the invasion and devastation of the land. Their blood calls for justice, and the psalmist trusts that the Lord will hold the guilty accountable.

Deu 32:43 Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all God's angels…
Rev 19:2 For His judgments are true and just. He has judged…
2Ki 9:7 And you are to strike down the house of your master Ahab,…

May the groans of the captives reach You;

Jerusalem’s fall had brought slaughter, exile, and anguish to God’s people. The psalmist asks God to hear the cries of those carried away by their enemies and to remember His covenant people in their misery.

Psa 102:20 to hear a prisoner’s groaning, to release those condemned…
Exo 2:23-25 After a long time, the king of Egypt died.…
Exo 3:7-9 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction…

by the strength of Your arm

Israel’s hope rested not in human strength but in the power of the Lord, who had delivered His people in the past and remained able to act against their oppressors.

Jer 32:17 Oh, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and the earth…
Exo 6:6 Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD…
Psa 89:10-13 You crushed Rahab like a carcass; You scattered…

preserve those condemned to death.

Many faced execution, starvation, or destruction in the aftermath of the invasion. The prayer appeals to God to spare those whose lives seemed beyond human rescue and to show His power by delivering them.

Pro 24:11 Rescue those being led away to death, and restrain…
Psa 68:20 Our God is a God of deliverance; the Lord GOD is our rescuer…
Psa 116:8 For You have delivered my soul from death,…

Pay back into the laps of our neighbors

The psalmist asks God to repay the surrounding nations for their hostility toward His people. The lap, formed by the fold of a garment, pictured the place where a person received what was given or returned. Their punishment would correspond to their guilt.

Isa 65:6 Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silent…
Luk 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure,…
Psa 94:2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render a reward to the proud.

sevenfold

The request is for a full and decisive judgment, not a partial response. The nations had persistently opposed Jerusalem, desecrated God’s inheritance, and treated His people with contempt.

Pro 6:31 Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up…
Lev 26:18 And if after all this you will not obey Me,…
Gen 4:15 “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain…”…

the reproach they hurled at You, O Lord.

Their insults against Israel were ultimately directed against the Lord, whose name and dwelling were associated with the nation. The psalm appeals to God to vindicate His holiness and judge those who had openly scorned Him.

Psa 69:9 because zeal for Your house has consumed me,…
Psa 74:18 Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD,…
Isa 37:23 Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom…

Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture,

Israel belongs to the Lord by covenant, dependent on His care and protection as sheep depend on their shepherd. Though Jerusalem had been devastated and the people reproached by surrounding nations, God had not abandoned those He had chosen.

Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…
Psa 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture…
Ezk 34:31 “You are My flock, the sheep of My pasture,”…

will thank You forever;

God’s deliverance would turn Israel’s grief into enduring praise. His faithfulness to His covenant gives His people reason to thank Him beyond the immediate crisis.

Psa 30:12 that my heart may sing Your praises and not be silent.…
Psa 52:9 I will praise You forever, because You have done it.…
Psa 86:12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart;…

from generation to generation

The Lord’s works were to be remembered and taught to Israel’s children, preserving the knowledge of His faithfulness among those yet to come.

Psa 78:4 We will not hide them from their children…
Psa 145:4 One generation will commend Your works to the next,…
Psa 89:1 A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the LORD…

we will declare Your praise.

Public worship and testimony would answer the nations’ scorn. God’s people were called to make known His mercy, power, and righteousness in every generation.

Psa 145:6-7 They will proclaim the power of Your awesome deeds,…
Psa 71:15 My mouth will declare Your righteousness and Your salvation…
Psa 22:22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;…
