Genesis 46
Berean Study Bible

Jacob’s Journey to Egypt

So Israel set out with all that he had,

Jacob left Canaan with his entire household, livestock, and possessions to join Joseph in Egypt. The move marked a major turning point for the covenant family, who would now live outside the land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yet Israel did not abandon that promise; he went forward trusting that God would preserve his family and fulfill His word.

and when he came to Beersheba,

At the southern edge of Canaan, Israel stopped at a place closely associated with the worship and history of his father and grandfather. Before crossing into Egypt, he paused within the land of promise to seek the Lord.

he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

Israel worshiped the same God who had appeared to Isaac and established His covenant with the patriarchs. His sacrifices expressed dependence on God as he faced an uncertain future in Egypt and affirmed that the family’s covenant relationship with the Lord would continue despite the change of land.
