1 Corinthians 6

Lawsuits among Believers

If any of you has a grievance against another,

Paul addresses disputes arising among Christians in Corinth, where personal and financial conflicts threatened the fellowship of the church. Believers were to seek reconciliation and submit such matters to the judgment of mature members of the congregation.

Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…
Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass,…

how dare he go to law before the unrighteous

Civil courts in Corinth were administered by those outside the faith and were often marked by public rivalry, corruption, and social favoritism. Taking internal church disputes before them exposed division within the congregation and placed judgment between believers in the hands of those who did not acknowledge Christ’s authority.

Pro 25:8-10 Do not bring hastily to court. Otherwise…
Luk 12:58-59 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary…

instead of before the saints!

God had set believers apart as His people and had given the church responsibility to exercise wisdom, discipline, and discernment. The congregation was not merely a gathering of individuals but a body accountable to Christ, capable of addressing ordinary disputes among its members.

Mat 18:17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.…
Deu 1:16-17 At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes…

Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?

Believers will share in Christ’s future reign and in the administration of His righteous judgment. Their judgment does not replace Christ’s supreme authority or involve personal vengeance, but reflects their appointed place in His kingdom.

Mat 19:28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the renewal…
Dan 7:22 until the Ancient of Days arrived…
Rev 20:4 Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them…

And if you are to judge the world,

Paul treats this future responsibility as certain. The Corinthians’ conduct in present disputes should reflect the wisdom, unity, and moral discernment expected of those who will reign with Christ.

Luk 22:30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom…
Rev 2:26-27 And to the one who overcomes and continues in My work…
Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection…

are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

Ordinary disagreements between believers should be settled within the church by mature, faithful people rather than brought before unbelieving courts. Matters involving money, property, or personal offense are small compared with the responsibility God has prepared for His people.

Exo 18:22 Have these men judge the people at all times.…
Deu 1:17 Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great…
2Ch 19:6-7 Then he said to the judges, “Consider carefully what you do,…

Do you not know that we will judge angels?

Believers will share in Christ’s future reign and judgment. The reference most naturally concerns fallen angels, who are reserved for final judgment. Paul reminds the Corinthians of the authority and responsibility God has appointed for His people, exposing the inconsistency of their inability to settle ordinary disputes within the church.

Mat 19:28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the renewal…
Rev 20:4 Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them…
Jud 1:6 And the angels who did not stay within their own domain…

How much more the things of this life!

Matters involving property, debts, and personal grievances are far less weighty than the judgment entrusted to the saints in the age to come. The church should therefore possess the wisdom and maturity to resolve such cases faithfully rather than bringing them before unbelieving courts.

Luk 12:13-14 Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother…
Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…
Deu 1:16-17 At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes…

So if you need to settle everyday matters,

Paul addresses ordinary disputes among believers, especially civil and financial matters that did not require intervention by secular courts. Such cases should be handled within the church, where reconciliation and truth were to govern the process.

Luk 12:58-59 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary…
Pro 25:8-10 Do not bring hastily to court. Otherwise…

do you appoint as judges

The church was expected to entrust such decisions to believers capable of exercising wisdom, fairness, and spiritual discernment.

Deu 16:18-20 You are to appoint judges and officials in every town…
2Ch 19:5-7 He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified…
Exo 18:21-22 Furthermore, select capable men from among the people…

those of no standing in the church?

Paul rebukes the Corinthians for taking their disputes before unbelieving magistrates rather than seeking judgment from mature members of the congregation. Even those regarded as least among believers were better suited to decide minor matters than pagan courts.

1Co 1:26-29 Brothers, consider the time of your calling:…
Jas 2:1-6 My brothers, as you hold out your faith…

I say this to your shame.

Paul rebukes the Corinthians for conduct that dishonors Christ and damages the church’s public witness, bringing shame in a culture where honor and shame were pivotal social values. Their willingness to bring disputes before unbelieving courts exposed a failure to live as a redeemed community.

1Co 15:34 Sober up as you ought, and stop sinning;…
2Th 3:14-15 Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions…
Rom 6:21 What fruit did you reap at that time from the things…

Is there really no one among you wise enough

The church had received God’s truth and included believers capable of exercising sound judgment. Paul expects mature Christians to address ordinary conflicts with fairness and discernment.

Deu 1:13 Choose for yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men…
Act 6:3 Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men…
Jas 1:5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God,…

to arbitrate between his brothers?

Fellow believers belong to the same spiritual family and should seek reconciliation rather than public litigation against one another. The inability to settle such matters revealed division and spiritual immaturity within the congregation.

Luk 12:13-14 Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother…
Deu 1:16-17 At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes…
Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…

Instead, one brother goes to law against another,

Paul rebukes believers in Corinth for carrying their disputes into civil court rather than seeking judgment and reconciliation within the church. As members of God’s family, they were expected to deal with one another in humility, honesty, and peace.

Luk 12:58-59 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary…
Pro 25:8-10 Do not bring hastily to court. Otherwise…
Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…

and this in front of unbelievers!

Roman legal proceedings were public, placing the quarrels of Christians before pagan judges and spectators. Such conflicts damaged the church’s witness by displaying division where the gospel called for love and reconciliation.

1Th 4:12 Then you will behave properly toward outsiders…
1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…
Col 4:5-6 Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time.…

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you

Corinthian believers were bringing personal disputes before pagan civil courts instead of seeking settlement within the church. In a city accustomed to public litigation, such conduct exposed divisions among Christians and displayed a failure of brotherly love and reconciliation.

Luk 12:58-59 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary…
Pro 25:8-10 Do not bring hastily to court. Otherwise…
Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…

means that you are thoroughly defeated already.

Regardless of the court’s decision, the existence of these disputes was already a spiritual loss. By pursuing one another before unbelieving judges, they harmed the unity of the congregation and weakened its witness.

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Gal 5:15 But if you keep on biting and devouring one another…
Jas 4:1-2 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?…

Why not rather be wronged?

Paul calls believers to value peace and fellowship above personal vindication. Following Christ’s example, they were to endure injury when necessary rather than deepen conflict among fellow Christians.

Mat 5:39-40 But I tell you not to resist an evil person.…
1Pe 2:19-23 For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering…
Rom 12:19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved; leave room…

Why not rather be cheated?

Accepting personal loss could preserve unity and demonstrate the sacrificial character expected within the body of Christ. Personal rights were not to be pursued at the expense of love, peace, and the church’s testimony.

Mat 5:41-42 and if someone forces you to go one mile,…
Luk 6:29-30 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him…
Heb 10:34 You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted…

Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong,

Paul exposes the conduct of believers who were defrauding and harming others rather than accepting personal loss for the sake of peace. Their actions reflected the values of Corinth’s competitive and self-seeking culture rather than the righteousness expected within the church.

Lev 19:13 You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him.…
Jer 22:13 Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,…
Pro 11:1 Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD,…

even against your own brothers!

The injury was especially serious because it was done within the family of faith. Fellow Christians were to be treated with the love, honesty, and mutual concern that marked Christ’s people, not as opponents to be exploited.

1Th 4:6 no one should ever violate or exploit his brother…
Jas 4:11 Brothers, do not slander one another…
Gal 5:15 But if you keep on biting and devouring one another…

Members of Christ

Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Paul confronts complacency among believers in Corinth, where public life was marked by pagan worship, sexual immorality, and widespread moral compromise. Those who persist in rebellion against God without repentance cannot claim a place in His present rule or His future eternal kingdom.

1Co 15:50 Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood…

Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words,…

Neither the sexually immoral,

Sexual conduct belongs within marriage between a man and a woman. Corinth’s permissive culture treated immorality as ordinary, but God’s standard remained unchanged.

Mrk 10:11-12 So He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife…

nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts,

Paul includes those involved in homosexual behavior among those whose unrepentant practice excludes them from God’s kingdom. The warning prepares for the hope stated in the following verse: sinners who turn to Christ may be washed, sanctified, and justified in His name.

1Ti 1:9-10 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous,…
Rom 1:26-27 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions.…
Lev 20:13 If a man lies with a man as with a woman,…

nor thieves,

Theft rejects God’s order by taking what belongs to another. It damages trust, harms neighbors, and often falls hardest on the poor and vulnerable. God requires honesty, restitution, and respect for the property of others.

Eph 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work…
Exo 20:15 You shall not steal.
Lev 19:11 You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.

nor the greedy,

Greed makes wealth, possessions, and personal advantage the ruling desire of the heart. It drives people to value gain above righteousness, generosity, and the welfare of others. Such covetousness treats created things as more important than obedience to God.

Eph 5:5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure,…
Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, the components…
Luk 12:15 And he said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves…

nor drunkards,

Drunkenness surrenders self-control to drink and commonly leads to shameful conduct, broken relationships, violence, and neglect of responsibility. In Corinth, excessive drinking was closely tied to pagan feasts and public immorality. God calls His people to sober-mindedness and disciplined lives.

Eph 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to…
Pro 23:20-21 Do not join those who drink too much wine…

nor verbal abusers,

Those who habitually insult, slander, threaten, or tear down others reveal a heart marked by hostility rather than love. Reckless and cruel speech spreads conflict and wounds families, churches, and communities. Words are to be truthful, restrained, and used for the good of others.

Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,…

nor swindlers,

Swindlers gain from others through fraud, manipulation, and exploitation. Dishonest weights, deceptive agreements, and schemes against the unsuspecting were common in the ancient marketplace. God condemns profit gained by injustice and requires fair dealing.

These sins characterize lives that stand opposed to God’s righteous rule. Those who remain in such practices without repentance will not share in the eternal inheritance of God’s kingdom.

Mat 25:34 Then the King will say to those on His right,…
Jas 2:5 Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor…

And that is what some of you were.

Many Corinthian believers had been delivered from the sins Paul has just named. The church included people from immoral, idolatrous, dishonest, and violent pasts, showing that conversion brought a real break with their former lives.

“Everything is permissible for me,”

Some Corinthians apparently used this slogan to defend personal freedom, including conduct shaped by the city’s permissive pagan culture. Paul grants that believers are not governed by human rules as a means of salvation, but freedom in Christ does not excuse sin or disregard God’s will.

1Co 10:23 “Everything is permissible,” but not everything…
Gal 5:13 For you, brothers, were called to freedom;…
Rom 14:14 I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus…

but not everything is beneficial.

Actions may be allowed in a narrow sense while still harming spiritual growth, weakening conscience, or damaging the church.

1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…

“Everything is permissible for me,”

Paul repeats their claim to expose its misuse. Christian liberty must be exercised with discernment and responsibility rather than according to personal desire.

1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
Rom 14:13 Therefore let us stop judging one another.…
1Pe 2:16 Live in freedom, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up…

but I will not be mastered by anything.

No appetite, habit, pleasure, or practice should rule a believer. True freedom is found in submission to Christ, not in becoming controlled by sinful desires.

2Pe 2:19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves…
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not…
Rom 6:16 Do you not know that when you offer yourselves…

“Food for the stomach and the stomach for food,”

A Corinthian slogan treated bodily appetites as morally insignificant. Since food satisfies hunger, some reasoned that sexual desire could likewise be satisfied without spiritual consequence. Paul rejects the idea that natural urges define what is lawful.

Mat 15:17 Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth…
Mrk 7:19 because it does not enter his heart, but it goes…

but God will destroy them both.

Food and the stomach belong to the present age and are temporary. Their passing nature shows that bodily appetite is not the standard for Christian conduct.

Col 2:22 These will all perish with use, because they are based on…
2Pe 3:10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief.…

The body is not intended for sexual immorality,

The body has enduring significance before God and cannot be separated from moral responsibility. In Corinth’s permissive culture, believers were not free to treat sexual sin as a harmless bodily act.

1Th 4:3-5 For it is God’s will that you should be holy:…
Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed…

but for the Lord,

The believer’s body belongs to Christ and is to be used in His service rather than for sin.

Christ cares for the whole person, including the body, which He will raise and transform. The body therefore has dignity and purpose under His authority.

By His power

God’s power is displayed in creation, in His deliverance of Israel, and supremely in the resurrection. Jesus’ return from death was not a natural occurrence but the decisive work of God, demonstrating His authority over sin, death, and the grave.

God raised the Lord from the dead,

The bodily resurrection of Jesus stands at the center of the gospel. Having been crucified and buried, He rose on the third day, fulfilling God’s promised victory through the Messiah and confirming His lordship.

Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him…
Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…
Gal 1:1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man,…

and He will raise us also.

Those who belong to Christ will likewise be raised bodily at His return. Their future resurrection rests on their union with the risen Lord, whose resurrection is the beginning and guarantee of the coming resurrection of all believers.

2Co 4:14 knowing that the One who raised the Lord Jesus…
Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead…
Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming…

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?

Believers belong to Christ wholly, including their physical bodies. Their union with Him is not merely private or spiritual in an abstract sense; it governs how they live in the body. Each Christian is joined to the wider body of Christ and must therefore honor Him in personal conduct.

Eph 5:30 For we are members of His body.
Rom 12:5 so in Christ we who are many are one body,…
Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church;…

Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute?

Sexual union joins two people in a profound bodily relationship. To join a body that belongs to Christ with a prostitute contradicts that union and treats what is Christ’s as though it were available for immorality. In Corinth’s permissive culture, Paul directly rejects the idea that sexual behavior is separate from faith.

Gen 38:15-18 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute…
Pro 6:26 For the levy of the prostitute is poverty.…
Pro 7:10-27 Then a woman came out to meet him, with the attire…

Never!

Such conduct is wholly incompatible with belonging to Christ. Paul’s forceful denial exposes the seriousness of sexual sin: it misuses a body redeemed by Christ and violates the holiness to which His people are called.

Rom 6:2 Certainly not! How can we who died to sin…
Rom 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law,…
Gal 2:17 But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ…

Or don’t you know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body?

Paul confronts the false idea that sexual activity is morally separate from the body’s relationship to God. To unite oneself with a prostitute creates a deep physical bond beyond a mere transaction, joining two people as one body even outside marriage. In Corinth, where prostitution, temple prostitution, and sexual immorality were common, believers were called to recognize that their bodies belonged to Christ and could not be treated as instruments for sin.

Gen 38:15-18 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute…
Pro 6:26-29 For the levy of the prostitute is poverty.…
Pro 23:27-28 For a prostitute is a deep pit, and an adulteress…

For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”

Marriage was established by God as the exclusive union of a man and woman. The one-flesh bond includes physical, personal, and covenantal unity. Sexual relations outside that covenant misuse what God designed for marriage and contradict the believer’s union with Christ.

Gen 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother…
Mat 19:5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father…
Eph 5:31 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother…

But he who unites himself with the Lord

Through faith, the believer belongs to Christ in a covenant relationship that reaches beyond outward profession. In Corinth, where sexual immorality was often treated as ordinary, Paul reminds Christians that their bodies and lives are claimed by the Lord.

Jhn 15:4-5 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…
Rom 6:5 For if we have been united with Him in His death…
1Jn 4:13 By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us:…

is one with Him

This union gives the believer a new identity and allegiance. A Christian cannot regard sin as a private matter, because he belongs to Christ and is joined to Him in purpose and life.

Jhn 17:21-23 that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me…
Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free…
Eph 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called…

in spirit.

The union is spiritual, established by the Holy Spirit rather than by physical contact or human effort. It is real in the present and points forward to the complete fellowship believers will have with God when He dwells with His people.

1Co 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…
Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access to the Father…
Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit…

The Temple of the Holy Spirit

Flee from sexual immorality.

Corinth was marked by public sexual vice and pagan practices that treated immorality as ordinary. Paul commands immediate separation from every unlawful sexual act rather than negotiation with temptation. Joseph’s departure from Potiphar’s wife illustrates the kind of decisive action required.

2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness…
Gen 39:12 She grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, “Sleep with me!”…
1Th 4:3 For it is God’s will that you should be holy:…

Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body,

All sin is against God, yet sexual sin involves the body in a uniquely personal way. The believer’s body belongs to Christ and is not morally separate from spiritual life.

2Co 7:1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises,…
1Th 4:4-5 each of you must know how to control his own body…
Rom 6:12-13 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body…

but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

Sexual immorality corrupts what God designed for holiness, marriage, and service to Him. It brings personal defilement, harms one’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, and dishonors the body that is to be set apart for God.

Rom 7:1 Do you not know, brothers, that the law…
Rom 11:2 God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew.…

that your body is a temple

In Corinth, a city marked by idolatry and sexual immorality, believers were to understand their physical bodies as sacred to God, not available for sinful use.

Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,…
Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son…

Jhn 14:17 The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him…
Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead…
1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…

whom you have received from God?

The Spirit is God’s gift to those who are saved, not a reward earned by human effort.

1Th 4:8 Anyone, then, who rejects this command…
Act 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you,…
Gal 3:2 Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law,…

You are not your own;

Christians do not possess absolute authority over their bodies or lives, because they belong to God through Christ’s redeeming work.

1Co 7:23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
Rom 14:7-8 For none of us lives to himself alone…
2Co 5:15 And He died for all, that those who live…

you were bought at a price.

Believers were redeemed from sin and death through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. Like Israel’s deliverance from slavery, this redemption established a new belonging: those Christ purchased are God’s own possession. The cost was not material wealth but Christ’s shed blood, revealing both the seriousness of sin and the value God places on His people.

1Co 7:23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
Act 20:28 Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock…
1Pe 1:18-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things…

Therefore glorify God with your body.

Since the body belongs to God and is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, it must not be used for sexual immorality or idolatry. In Corinth’s culture of widespread immorality, Christians were called to honor God through bodily conduct as well as inward faith. Their physical lives were part of their worship and service to Him.

Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…
Php 1:20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed,…
