1 Τότε ὁμοιωθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν δέκα παρθένοις αἵτινες λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν τοῦ νυμφίου “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
2 πέντε δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν μωραὶ καὶ πέντε φρόνιμοι Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
3 αἱ γὰρ μωραὶ λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας ‹αὐτῶν› οὐκ ἔλαβον μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἔλαιον For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.
4 αἱ δὲ φρόνιμοι ἔλαβον ἔλαιον ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις μετὰ τῶν λαμπάδων ἑαυτῶν but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
5 χρονίζοντος δὲ τοῦ νυμφίου ἐνύσταξαν πᾶσαι καὶ ἐκάθευδον As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 Μέσης δὲ νυκτὸς κραυγὴ γέγονεν Ἰδοὺ ὁ νυμφίος ἐξέρχεσθε εἰς ἀπάντησιν ‹αὐτοῦ› But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 Τότε ἠγέρθησαν πᾶσαι αἱ παρθένοι ἐκεῖναι καὶ ἐκόσμησαν τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.
8 αἱ δὲ μωραὶ ταῖς φρονίμοις εἶπαν Δότε ἡμῖν ἐκ τοῦ ἐλαίου ὑμῶν ὅτι αἱ λαμπάδες ἡμῶν σβέννυνται And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
9 Ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι λέγουσαι Μή¦Ποτε οὐ μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν πορεύεσθε μᾶλλον πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ “’No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 Ἀπερχομένων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀγοράσαι ἦλθεν ὁ νυμφίος καὶ αἱ ἕτοιμοι εἰσῆλθον μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ ἐκλείσθη ἡ θύρα And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 Ὕστερον δὲ ἔρχονται καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ παρθένοι λέγουσαι Κύριε κύριε ἄνοιξον ἡμῖν Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
13 Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν ἡμέραν οὐδὲ τὴν ὥραν ⧼ἐν ᾗ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἔρχεται⧽ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
14 Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος ἀποδημῶν ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς ἰδίους δούλους καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.
15 καὶ ᾧ μὲν ἔδωκεν πέντε τάλαντα ᾧ δὲ δύο ᾧ δὲ ἕν ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὴν ἰδίαν δύναμιν καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν Εὐθέως To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.
16 Πορευθεὶς ὁ τὰ πέντε τάλαντα λαβὼν ἠργάσατο ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐκέρδησεν ἄλλα πέντε He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more.
17 ὡσαύτως ὁ τὰ δύο ἐκέρδησεν ἄλλα δύο So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more.
18 ὁ δὲ τὸ ἓν λαβὼν ἀπελθὼν ὤρυξεν γῆν καὶ ἔκρυψεν τὸ ἀργύριον τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 Μετὰ δὲ πολὺν χρόνον ἔρχεται ὁ κύριος τῶν δούλων ἐκείνων καὶ συναίρει λόγον μετ’ αὐτῶν Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.
20 καὶ προσελθὼν ὁ τὰ πέντε τάλαντα λαβὼν προσήνεγκεν ἄλλα πέντε τάλαντα λέγων Κύριε πέντε τάλαντά μοι παρέδωκας ἴδε ἄλλα πέντε τάλαντα ἐκέρδησα And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 Ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ Εὖ δοῦλε ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ ἐπὶ ὀλίγα ἦς πιστός ἐπὶ πολλῶν σε καταστήσω εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν χαρὰν τοῦ κυρίου σου His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 Προσελθὼν ‹δὲ› καὶ ὁ τὰ δύο τάλαντα εἶπεν Κύριε δύο τάλαντά μοι παρέδωκας ἴδε ἄλλα δύο τάλαντα ἐκέρδησα And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

24 Προσελθὼν δὲ καὶ ὁ τὸ ἓν τάλαντον εἰληφὼς εἶπεν Κύριε ἔγνων σε ὅτι σκληρὸς εἶ ἄνθρωπος θερίζων ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρας καὶ συνάγων ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισας He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.
25 καὶ φοβηθεὶς ἀπελθὼν ἔκρυψα τὸ τάλαντόν σου ἐν τῇ γῇ ἴδε ἔχεις τὸ σόν so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πονηρὲ δοῦλε καὶ ὀκνηρέ ᾔδεις ὅτι θερίζω ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρα καὶ συνάγω ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισα But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?
27 ἔδει σε οὖν βαλεῖν τὰ ἀργύριά μου τοῖς τραπεζίταις καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐγὼ ἐκομισάμην ἂν τὸ ἐμὸν σὺν τόκῳ Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 Ἄρατε οὖν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὸ τάλαντον καὶ δότε τῷ ἔχοντι τὰ δέκα τάλαντα So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. “’So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags.
29 τῷ γὰρ ἔχοντι παντὶ δοθήσεται καὶ περισσευθήσεται τοῦ δὲ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.
30 καὶ τὸν ἀχρεῖον δοῦλον ἐκβάλετε εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
31 Ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄγγελοι μετ’ αὐτοῦ τότε καθίσει ἐπὶ θρόνου δόξης αὐτοῦ “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.
32 καὶ συναχθήσονται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη καὶ ἀφορίσει αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων ὥσπερ ὁ ποιμὴν ἀφορίζει τὰ πρόβατα ἀπὸ τῶν ἐρίφων Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
33 καὶ στήσει τὰ μὲν πρόβατα ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ τὰ δὲ ἐρίφια ἐξ εὐωνύμων And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 Τότε ἐρεῖ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τοῖς ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ Δεῦτε οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός μου κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
35 ἐπείνασα γὰρ καὶ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν ἐδίψησα καὶ ἐποτίσατέ με ξένος ἤμην καὶ συνηγάγετέ με For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
36 γυμνὸς καὶ περιεβάλετέ με ἠσθένησα καὶ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με ἐν φυλακῇ ἤμην καὶ ἤλθατε πρός με I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 Τότε ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ οἱ δίκαιοι λέγοντες Κύριε πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα καὶ ἐθρέψαμεν ἢ διψῶντα καὶ ἐποτίσαμεν Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
38 πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ξένον καὶ συνηγάγομεν ἢ γυμνὸν καὶ περιεβάλομεν And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
39 πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ἀσθενοῦντα ἢ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ ἤλθομεν πρός σε And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Βασιλεὺς ἐρεῖ αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον ἐποιήσατε ἑνὶ τούτων τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου τῶν ἐλαχίστων ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
41 Τότε ἐρεῖ καὶ τοῖς ἐξ εὐωνύμων Πορεύεσθε ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ‹οἱ› κατηραμένοι εἰς τὸ πῦρ τὸ αἰώνιον τὸ ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 ἐπείνασα γὰρ καὶ οὐκ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν (καὶ) ἐδίψησα καὶ οὐκ ἐποτίσατέ με For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
43 ξένος ἤμην καὶ οὐ συνηγάγετέ με γυμνὸς καὶ οὐ περιεβάλετέ με ἀσθενὴς καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐκ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 Τότε ἀποκριθήσονται καὶ αὐτοὶ λέγοντες Κύριε πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα ἢ διψῶντα ἢ ξένον ἢ γυμνὸν ἢ ἀσθενῆ ἢ ἐν φυλακῇ καὶ οὐ διηκονήσαμέν σοι Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 Τότε ἀποκριθήσεται αὐτοῖς λέγων Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐφ’ ὅσον οὐκ ἐποιήσατε ἑνὶ τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων οὐδὲ ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 Καὶ ἀπελεύσονται οὗτοι εἰς κόλασιν αἰώνιον οἱ δὲ δίκαιοι εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
