1Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, [the hometown of] Lazarus, whom [He] had raised from [the] dead. 1Ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸ ἓξ ἡμερῶν τοῦ πάσχα ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν ὅπου ἦν Λάζαρος ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν Ἰησοῦς
2So they hosted a dinner for [Jesus] there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him. 2ἐποίησαν οὖν αὐτῷ δεῖπνον ἐκεῖ καὶ ἡ Μάρθα διηκόνει ὁ δὲ Λάζαρος εἷς ἦν ἐκ τῶν ἀνακειμένων σὺν αὐτῷ
3Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, [and] she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped [them] with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 3ἡ οὖν Μαριὰμ λαβοῦσα λίτραν μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτίμου ἤλειψεν τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐξέμαξεν ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ἡ δὲ οἰκία ἐπληρώθη ἐκ τῆς ὀσμῆς τοῦ μύρου
4But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked, 4Λέγει δὲ Ἰούδας ὁ Ἰσκαριώτης εἷς [ἐκ] τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ὁ μέλλων αὐτὸν παραδιδόναι
5“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and [the money] given to [the] poor?” 5Διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς
6[Judas] did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into [it]. 6εἶπεν δὲ τοῦτο οὐχ ὅτι περὶ τῶν πτωχῶν ἔμελεν αὐτῷ ἀλλ’ ὅτι κλέπτης ἦν καὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον ἔχων τὰ βαλλόμενα ἐβάσταζεν
7“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She was intended to keep [this perfume] to prepare for the day of My burial. 7Εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἄφες αὐτήν ἵνα εἰς τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ ἐνταφιασμοῦ μου τηρήσῃ αὐτό
8The poor you will always have with you, but {you will} not always have Me.” 8τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε
9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that [Jesus] was there. And they came not only because of [Him], but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from [the] dead. 9Ἔγνω οὖν ὁ ὄχλος πολὺς ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἐστιν καὶ ἦλθον οὐ διὰ τὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον ἀλλ’ ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἴδωσιν ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν
10[So] the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 10ἐβουλεύσαντο δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν
11for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting [them] and believing in Jesus. 11ὅτι πολλοὶ δι’ αὐτὸν ὑπῆγον τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐπίστευον εἰς τὸν Ἰησοῦν
12The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 12Τῇ ἐπαύριον ὁ ὄχλος πολὺς ὁ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἔρχεται ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
13They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in [the] name of [the] Lord!” “[ Blessed is ] the King of Israel!” 13ἔλαβον τὰ βαΐα τῶν φοινίκων καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐκραύγαζον Ὡσαννά Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Καὶ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written: 14Εὑρὼν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὀνάριον ἐκάθισεν ἐπ’ αὐτό καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον
15“Do not be afraid, O daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.” 15Μὴ φοβοῦ θυγάτηρ Σιών ἰδοὺ ὁ Βασιλεύς σου ἔρχεται καθήμενος ἐπὶ πῶλον ὄνου
16At first His disciples {did} not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, [ and they realized] that these very things had also {been} written about Him. 16Ταῦτα οὐκ ἔγνωσαν αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ τὸ πρῶτον ἀλλ’ ὅτε ἐδοξάσθη Ἰησοῦς τότε ἐμνήσθησαν ὅτι ταῦτα ἦν ἐπ’ αὐτῷ γεγραμμένα καὶ ταῦτα ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ
17Meanwhile, many people continued to testify that they had been with [Jesus] when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from [the] dead. 17Ἐμαρτύρει οὖν ὁ ὄχλος ὁ ὢν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὅτε τὸν Λάζαρον ἐφώνησεν ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου καὶ ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν
18That is also why the crowd went out to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. 18διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος ὅτι ἤκουσαν τοῦτο αὐτὸν πεποιηκέναι τὸ σημεῖον
19Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look [how] the whole world has gone after Him!” 19Οἱ οὖν Φαρισαῖοι εἶπαν πρὸς ἑαυτούς Θεωρεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελεῖτε οὐδέν ἴδε ὁ κόσμος ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν
20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. 20Ἦσαν δὲ Ἕλληνές τινες ἐκ τῶν ἀναβαινόντων ἵνα προσκυνήσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ
21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” 21οὗτοι οὖν προσῆλθον Φιλίππῳ τῷ ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες Κύριε θέλομεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδεῖν
22Philip relayed [this appeal] to Andrew, [and both of them] went and told Jesus. 22ἔρχεται ὁ Φίλιππος καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἀνδρέᾳ ἔρχεται Ἀνδρέας καὶ Φίλιππος καὶ λέγουσιν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
23But Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 23Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκρίνεται αὐτοῖς λέγων Ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
24Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground [and] dies, it remains only [a seed]; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 24ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν μὴ ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου πεσὼν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποθάνῃ αὐτὸς μόνος μένει ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ πολὺν καρπὸν φέρει
25Whoever loves his life will lose it, [but] whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 25ὁ φιλῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολλύει αὐτήν καὶ ὁ μισῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον φυλάξει αὐτήν
26If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. 26ἐὰν ἐμοί τις διακονῇ ἐμοὶ ἀκολουθείτω καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἐκεῖ καὶ ὁ διάκονος ὁ ἐμὸς ἔσται ἐάν τις ἐμοὶ διακονῇ τιμήσει αὐτὸν ὁ Πατήρ
27Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour. 27Νῦν ἡ ψυχή μου τετάρακται καὶ τί εἴπω Πάτερ σῶσόν με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην
28Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified [it], and I will glorify [it] again.” 28Πάτερ δόξασόν σου τὸ ὄνομα Ἦλθεν οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Καὶ ἐδόξασα καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω
29The crowd standing [there] heard [it] [and] said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him. 29Ὁ οὖν ὄχλος ὁ ἑστὼς καὶ ἀκούσας ἔλεγεν Βροντὴν γεγονέναι ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Ἄγγελος αὐτῷ λελάληκεν
30In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours. 30Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Οὐ δι’ ἐμὲ ἡ φωνὴ αὕτη γέγονεν ἀλλὰ δι’ ὑμᾶς
31Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out. 31νῦν κρίσις ἐστὶν τοῦ κόσμου τούτου νῦν ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐκβληθήσεται ἔξω
32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] to Myself.” 32κἀγὼ ἐὰν ὑψωθῶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν
33He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. 33τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνήσκειν
34The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. [So] how {can} you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 34Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ πῶς λέγεις σὺ ὅτι δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
35Then Jesus told them, “[For] a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The [one who] walks in the darkness {does} not know where he is going. 35Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ἔτι μικρὸν χρόνον τὸ φῶς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐστιν περιπατεῖτε ὡς τὸ φῶς ἔχετε ἵνα μὴ σκοτία ὑμᾶς καταλάβῃ καὶ ὁ περιπατῶν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ οὐκ οἶδεν ποῦ ὑπάγει
36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” [After] Jesus had spoken these things, He went away [and] was hidden from them. 36ὡς τὸ φῶς ἔχετε πιστεύετε εἰς τὸ φῶς ἵνα υἱοὶ φωτὸς γένησθε Ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἐκρύβη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν
37Although [Jesus] had performed so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him. 37Τοσαῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ σημεῖα πεποιηκότος ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν
38This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom {has} the arm of [the] Lord been revealed?” 38ἵνα ὁ λόγος Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν Κύριε τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν καὶ ὁ βραχίων Κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη
39For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says: 39Διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἠδύναντο πιστεύειν ὅτι πάλιν εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας
40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that they cannot see with [their] eyes, and understand with [their] hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.” 40Τετύφλωκεν αὐτῶν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ ἐπώρωσεν αὐτῶν τὴν καρδίαν ἵνα μὴ ἴδωσιν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ νοήσωσιν τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ στραφῶσιν καὶ ἰάσομαι αὐτούς
41Isaiah said these things because he saw [Jesus’] glory and spoke about Him. 41Ταῦτα εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας ὅτι εἶδεν τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησεν περὶ αὐτοῦ
42Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess [Him], for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue. 42ὅμως μέντοι καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν ἀλλὰ διὰ τοὺς Φαρισαίους οὐχ ὡμολόγουν ἵνα μὴ ἀποσυνάγωγοι γένωνται
43For they loved praise from men more than praise from God. 43ἠγάπησαν γὰρ τὴν δόξαν τῶν ἀνθρώπων μᾶλλον ἤπερ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
44Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me {does} not believe in Me [alone], but in the [One who] sent Me. 44Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἔκραξεν καὶ εἶπεν Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ πιστεύει εἰς ἐμὲ ἀλλὰ εἰς τὸν πέμψαντά με
45And whoever sees Me sees the [One who] sent Me. 45καὶ ὁ θεωρῶν ἐμὲ θεωρεῖ τὸν πέμψαντά με
46I have come into the world [as] a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness. 46ἐγὼ φῶς εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐλήλυθα ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ μὴ μείνῃ
47As for anyone who hears My words and {does} not keep [them], I {do} not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 47Καὶ ἐάν τίς μου ἀκούσῃ τῶν ῥημάτων καὶ μὴ φυλάξῃ ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω αὐτόν οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον ἵνα κρίνω τὸν κόσμον ἀλλ’ ἵνα σώσω τὸν κόσμον
48There is a judge [for] the [one who] rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 48ὁ ἀθετῶν ἐμὲ καὶ μὴ λαμβάνων τὰ ῥήματά μου ἔχει τὸν κρίνοντα αὐτόν ὁ λόγος ὃν ἐλάλησα ἐκεῖνος κρινεῖ αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
49I {have} not spoken on My own, but the Father [who] sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it. 49Ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐξ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλάλησα ἀλλ’ ὁ πέμψας με Πατὴρ αὐτός μοι ἐντολὴν δέδωκεν τί εἴπω καὶ τί λαλήσω
50And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.” 50καὶ οἶδα ὅτι ἡ ἐντολὴ αὐτοῦ ζωὴ αἰώνιός ἐστιν ἃ οὖν ἐγὼ λαλῶ καθὼς εἴρηκέν μοι ὁ Πατήρ οὕτως λαλῶ
