Judges 15

Samson’s Revenge

Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,

Wheat harvest came in late spring, a season of abundance and public celebration in Israel. Against this setting of normal rural life, Samson returns to Timnah with an unresolved personal grievance.

Rut 2:23 So Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz…
Exo 34:22 And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks…
1Sa 12:17 Is it not the wheat harvest today? I will call on the LORD…

Samson took a young goat

A young goat was a customary gift and likely intended to restore peaceful relations with his wife and her family. Samson appears to assume that his marriage remains intact despite his earlier departure.

Gen 38:17-20 “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah answered.…
Jdg 13:15 “Please stay here,” Manoah said to the angel of the LORD…
Gen 27:9-10 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,…

and went to visit his wife.

Samson sought to resume life with the woman he had married. He did not yet know that her father had given her to the man who had served as Samson’s companion at the wedding feast.

2Sa 11:4 Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came…
2Sa 12:24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her…
Rut 4:13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife.…

“I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said.

Samson expected access to his wife and the restoration of their marriage. His words show that he regarded her as still belonging to him by marriage.

Gen 24:67 And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah…
Sng 1:4 Take me away with you—let us hurry! May the king…
Sng 3:4 I had just passed them when I found the one I love.…

But her father would not let him enter.

Her father’s refusal reveals that he had acted without Samson’s consent. By giving her to another man, he turned a damaged marriage into an open offense, provoking the conflict that follows.

Gen 29:23-27 But when evening came, Laban took his daughter Leah…
1Sa 18:19-21 So when it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David,…
1Sa 25:44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife,…

“I was sure that you thoroughly hated her,” said her father,

Samson’s departure after the wedding feast led his father-in-law to conclude that he had abandoned the marriage. Acting on that assumption, he treated Samson’s absence as a rejection of his daughter.

Deu 21:15-17 If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved…
Mal 1:2-3 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……

“so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you.

He had given her to Samson’s companion, likely the man who had served as his friend during the feast. The decision dishonored Samson and disregarded the marriage bond, creating the immediate cause of Samson’s renewed conflict with the Philistines.

Jdg 14:20 and his wife was given to one of the men who…
1Sa 25:44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife,…

Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she?

Seeking to settle the matter, the father offered his younger daughter in place of Samson’s wife. His appeal to her beauty shows that he viewed the proposal as a practical means of appeasing Samson rather than acknowledging the wrong already done.

Gen 25:23 And He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb,…
Rom 9:11-13 Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good…
1Sa 16:11-13 And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons”…

Please take her instead.”

The offer reveals his fear of Samson’s response and his effort to preserve peace. Samson, however, would not accept a substitute, and the father’s actions became the occasion for further judgment against the Philistines.

Gen 44:33-34 Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave…
Exo 32:32 “Yet now, if You would only forgive their sin”…
2Sa 18:33 The king was shaken and went up to the chamber over the gate…

Samson said to them,

Samson confronted the Philistines after they had given his wife to another man, an act that deepened the hostility between him and Israel’s oppressors. As Israel’s judge, he had been raised up to begin delivering Israel from Philistine domination, though his actions were often intertwined with personal injury and anger.

Jdg 14:12 “Let me tell you a riddle,” Samson said to them.…
Jdg 14:18 Before sunset on the seventh day, the men of the city…

“This time I will be blameless

Samson regarded the Philistines’ treatment of him as grounds for retaliation. He believed their wrongdoing released him from responsibility for the consequences of what he intended to do.

1Sa 26:9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…
2Sa 3:28 Afterward, David heard about this and said,…

in doing harm to the Philistines.”

His coming attack would serve both as personal vengeance and as part of God’s purpose to weaken Philistine power over Israel.

Jdg 14:19 Then the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him,…
1Sa 18:27 David and his men killed two hundred Philistines.…
1Sa 18:25 Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires…”…

Then Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes.

Seeking revenge after the Philistines gave his wife to another man, Samson gathered a large number of animals for an attack upon their crops.

and fastened a torch between each pair of tails.

When released, the burning pairs spread fire through the Philistine fields, striking at their grain, vineyards, and olive groves and demonstrating the costly consequences of their hostility toward Israel.

Then he lit the torches

Samson carried out the plan he had prepared, turning his anger over the Philistines’ treachery into a devastating act against their land.

Jdg 7:20 The three companies blew their horns and shattered their jars.…

and released the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines,

The animals, foxes or possibly jackals as the Hebrew word can mean either, scattered through the fields with burning torches tied between them, spreading fire in many directions and making it difficult to contain.

as well as the vineyards and olive groves.

By destroying vineyards and olive groves, Samson struck at long-term sources of wine and oil, greatly damaging the Philistine economy and provoking the conflict that followed.

Amo 4:9 I struck you with blight and mildew in your growing gardens…
Deu 28:39-40 You will plant and cultivate vineyards,…

“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded.

The Philistines sought the one responsible for the destruction of their grain fields, vineyards, and olive groves. Samson’s attack had inflicted serious economic loss and intensified the conflict between Israel and Philistia.

1Sa 14:43 “Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him……
Gen 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, …

“It was Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told.

The people identified Samson through his marriage connection to the Timnite of Timnah. What had begun as a family dispute now became another confrontation between Samson and the Philistines.

Jdg 14:20 and his wife was given to one of the men who…
1Sa 18:27 David and his men killed two hundred Philistines.…
1Sa 22:14 Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your servants…

“For his wife was given to his companion.”

Samson’s wife had been given to another man after Samson left Timnah in anger. Her father’s decision dishonored Samson and provoked the retaliation that brought devastation upon Philistine property.

Gen 29:25-27 When morning came, there was Leah! Jacob said to Laban.…

So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.

The Philistines punished the woman and her father for the consequences of Samson’s actions, though they had also caused the original breach by pressuring her during Samson’s wedding feast. Their cruelty fulfilled the threat they had previously made against her and deepened the violence that would continue between Samson and Philistia.

Gen 38:24 About three months later, Judah was told…

“Because you have done this,

The Philistines had answered Samson’s destruction of their crops by killing two Israelites in a cruel act. Their retaliation brought further judgment upon them.

Samson refuses to consider their punishment sufficient and resolves to answer their violence with force.

Psa 132:4-5 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,…

until I have taken vengeance upon you.”

He soon strikes the Philistines severely before withdrawing to the rock of Etam. Though driven by personal vengeance, Samson’s conflict with the Philistines continues God’s work of delivering Israel from their oppression.

Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…
Rom 12:19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved; leave room…
Nam 1:2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging…

And he struck them ruthlessly with a great slaughter,

Samson answered the Philistines’ murder of his wife and father-in-law with overwhelming violence. His action continued the conflict between Israel and the Philistines and demonstrated the strength God had given him as Israel’s judge, though Samson’s personal vengeance remained bound up with his calling to oppose Israel’s oppressors.

and then went down and stayed in the cave at the rock of Etam.

Samson withdrew to a defensible refuge in the hill country of Judah. The cave at Etam provided protection as the Philistines prepared to retaliate, setting the stage for Judah’s fearful response and Samson’s next confrontation with Israel’s enemies.

Then the Philistines went up,

1Sa 7:7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered…

Their presence in Judah brought the conflict directly into Israel’s land and placed pressure on the men of Judah, who feared the Philistine military power.

1Sa 17:1 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war…
2Ch 28:18 The Philistines had also raided the cities…
1Sa 13:5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…

and deployed themselves near the town of Lehi.

The Philistines spread out near Lehi, meaning “jawbone,” in preparation for conflict. Their invasion set the stage for Samson’s victory over them, demonstrating that their strength could not prevent God’s deliverance of Israel.

1Ch 14:9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley…
2Sa 5:18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…
1Ch 14:13 Once again the Philistines raided the valley.

“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah.

Judah had lived under Philistine domination for forty years and feared provoking their oppressors. Rather than joining Samson against the Philistines, they sought to prevent further trouble in their own territory.

Gen 31:36 Then Jacob became incensed and challenged Laban.…
Jdg 11:12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…

The Philistines replied, “We have come to arrest Samson

and pay him back for what he has done to us.”

They intended to exact vengeance for Samson’s destruction of their crops and his defeat of their men. Their demand placed Judah between submission to Philistine rule and loyalty to the deliverer God had raised up.

Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…
Rom 12:19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved; leave room…

In response, three thousand men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam,

Judah sent a large force not to join Samson against the Philistines, but to restrain him. Their actions reveal how deeply Philistine rule had subdued them and how strongly they feared retaliation.

1Sa 22:1-2 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.…
1Ch 4:32 And their villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen,…
2Ch 11:6 He built up Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,

and they asked Samson, “Do you not realize that the Philistines rule over us?

Judah had accepted Philistine domination as unavoidable. Rather than seeing Samson as God’s instrument against their oppressors, they viewed him as a threat to their fragile security.

Jdg 13:1 Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD…
1Sa 13:19-22 And no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel…

What have you done to us?”

They blamed Samson for provoking the Philistines, overlooking the injustice and violence that had already marked Philistine rule.

Gen 26:10 “What is this you have done to us?” asked Abimelech.…
Gen 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, …
Exo 14:11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves…

“I have done to them what they did to me,” he replied.

Samson answered according to the injury he had received. His conflict with the Philistines was personal, yet God was using his actions to begin breaking their hold over Israel.

Pro 24:29 I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man…
Jdg 1:7 Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings…
Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…

But they said to him,

The men of Judah said to Samson, “We have come down to bind you and hand you over to the Philistines.”

Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…
Gen 37:26-27 What profit will we gain if we kill our brother…

“We have come down to arrest you

They intended to bind Samson and surrender him, seeking to preserve themselves by yielding to their oppressors. Israel’s own tribe acted against the judge God had appointed, revealing the depth of Philistine dominance and Israel’s weakened condition.

Mat 26:47-50 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve,…
Mrk 14:43-46 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve…
Jhn 18:12-13 Then the band of soldiers, with its commander…

and hand you over to the Philistines.”

Their willingness to deliver Samson showed how far Judah had accepted Philistine control. Instead of joining Samson against Israel’s enemies, they treated him as the cause of their danger.

Jdg 16:18-21 When Delilah realized that he had revealed…
1Sa 23:19-20 Then the Ziphites came up to Saul at Gibeah…
Jhn 18:30 “If He were not a criminal,” they replied,…

Samson replied,

Samson did not resist the men of Judah, but he required an assurance before allowing them to bind him.

Dan 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king,…
Act 4:19-20 But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves…

“Swear to me that you will not kill me yourselves.”

He would submit to his countrymen but would not permit them to shed his blood. Samson knew the Philistines were his appointed adversaries and trusted that God would enable him to face them.

Jos 2:12-14 Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD…
1Sa 20:14-17 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……
1Sa 24:21-22 So now, swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off…

“No,” they answered,

The men of Judah sought to avoid provoking the Philistines, who ruled over Israel at the time. Rather than joining Samson against their oppressors, they treated him as the cause of danger.

1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
1Sa 26:9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…

“we will not kill you,

They assured Samson that they would not shed the blood of a fellow Israelite. Their words also show their awareness of his strength and standing among the people.

Gen 37:21-22 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue Joseph…
1Sa 22:17 Then the king ordered the guards at his side…

but we will tie you up securely

Judah intended to restrain Samson so that he could not resist their plan or bring further Philistine retaliation upon them.

Jhn 18:12 Then the band of soldiers, with its commander…
Act 21:33 The commander came up and arrested Paul,…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…

and hand you over to them.”

Their willingness to surrender Samson revealed how deeply Philistine domination had shaped their actions. They preferred submission to their enemies over trusting the deliverer God had raised up.

Jdg 16:18-21 When Delilah realized that he had revealed…
Act 21:11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt,…
Mat 27:2 They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over…

So they bound him with two new ropes

New ropes were chosen to hold him firmly, since Samson’s extraordinary strength was well known. The careful binding would soon show that human restraints could not limit the power of God working through him.

Jdg 16:11-12 He replied, “If they tie me up with new ropes…
Gen 22:9 When they arrived at the place God had designated, ……
Psa 149:8 to bind their kings with chains……

and led him up from the rock.

Samson left the place where he had taken refuge and allowed his own countrymen to deliver him to the Philistines. His surrender placed him in the very setting where God would use him to strike Israel’s enemies.

1Sa 23:28 So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet…
Psa 40:2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair,…
2Sa 22:17-20 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;…

When Samson arrived in Lehi,

Samson entered a place in Judah under Philistine influence, where his conflict with Israel’s oppressors would quickly escalate. The name Lehi, meaning “jawbone,” anticipates the weapon God would place within Samson’s reach.

Jdg 16:1 One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute…
Jdg 14:5 Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother…
1Sa 17:48 As the Philistine started forward to attack him, David…

the Philistines came out shouting against him.

Confident that Samson had been delivered into their hands, the Philistines advanced with a battle cry. Their pursuit reflected their continued control over Israel during the days of the judges.

1Sa 17:10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel…
1Sa 17:25 Now the men of Israel had been saying, “…
1Sa 17:43 “Am I a dog,” he said to David, “that you come at me”…

And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him.

God’s Spirit empowered Samson with strength beyond natural ability, using him to begin delivering Israel from Philistine oppression despite Samson’s personal failures.

Jdg 14:6 and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him,…
Jdg 14:19 Then the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him,…
1Sa 11:6 When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God…

The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax,

The bindings lost their strength as easily as flax fibers consumed by fire, becoming weak and brittle. What the Philistines intended as secure restraint could not withstand God’s power.

Jdg 16:12 So Delilah took new ropes, tied him up with them,…
Jdg 16:9 While the men were hidden in her room, she called out…
Isa 42:3 A bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick…

and the bonds broke loose from his hands.

Samson was completely freed from the ropes, preparing him to strike the Philistines and demonstrate that their strength and control were not final.

Act 12:7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…
Jer 30:8 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…

He found the fresh jawbone of a donkey,

Donkeys were common in Israel, and a recently discarded jawbone would have remained hard enough to serve as a weapon. Samson’s use of such an ordinary object showed that Israel’s deliverance depended not on conventional arms but on the strength God supplied during Philistine oppression.

Jdg 3:31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. He too saved Israel…
1Sa 17:40 And David took his staff in his hand,…
1Co 1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world……

reached out his hand and took it,

Samson acted decisively, taking up what was available as the Spirit of the Lord empowered him. Though set apart as a Nazirite and judge, he was not equipped with a soldier’s weapons; God used his willing action to bring judgment on Israel’s enemies.

1Sa 17:49 Then David reached into his bag, took out a stone,…
Exo 4:4 “Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail,”…
2Ki 2:13 Elisha also picked up the cloak that had fallen…

and struck down a thousand men.

Samson’s victory over so many Philistines was extraordinary and demonstrated the power God gave him to begin delivering Israel. The number underscores the scale of the defeat and the inability of the Philistines to overcome the Lord’s appointed judge.

Jdg 3:29-30 At that time they struck down about ten thousand…
Jdg 7:22 And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded,…
Heb 11:34 quenched the raging fire, and escaped the edge of the sword…

Then Samson said:

Having broken free from the ropes and struck the Philistines after they had delivered him over, Samson celebrated the victory God had granted him.

Exo 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:…
Jdg 5:1 On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:

“With the jawbone of a donkey

The weapon was a fresh jawbone he found on the ground, an unlikely instrument against armed Philistine soldiers.

Jdg 4:21 But as he lay sleeping from exhaustion, Heber’s wife Jael…
1Sa 17:50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling…

I have piled them into heaps.

The fallen Philistines testified to the completeness of Samson’s victory over those who oppressed Israel.

2Ki 10:8 When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu…
Nam 3:3 Charging horseman, flashing sword, shining spear;…
Jos 8:29 He hung the king of Ai on a tree until evening…

With the jawbone of a donkey

The repeated image draws attention to the extraordinary means by which Samson prevailed.

1Co 1:27-29 But God chose the foolish things of the world……
2Co 12:9-10 But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you…

I have slain a thousand men.”

Samson’s strength came from the Spirit of the LORD, who used him to judge the Philistines despite Samson’s personal failures.

1Sa 18:7 And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain…
Jdg 16:30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.”…
2Ki 19:35 And that very night the angel of the LORD went out…

And when Samson had finished speaking,

Having declared the Lord’s victory over the Philistines, Samson concluded his poetic response to the battle. His defeat of a thousand men with a donkey’s jawbone confirmed that God had empowered him to deliver Israel from its oppressors.

Deu 32:45 When Moses had finished reciting all these words…
Gen 17:22 When He had finished speaking with Abraham,…
Gen 18:33 When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham,…

he cast the jawbone from his hand;

After the conflict, Samson cast the jawbone from his hand, having finished its use as a weapon. His deliverance did not rest in the jawbone itself but in the strength God supplied.

Exo 32:19 As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf…
Exo 7:10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did…
Exo 4:3 “Throw it on the ground,” said the LORD.…

and he named that place Ramath-lehi.

The site, meaning the hill of the jawbone, preserved the memory of Samson’s victory and Israel’s deliverance from the Philistines.

1Sa 7:12 Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up.…
Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.
Gen 28:19 and he called that place Bethel, though previously the city…

And being very thirsty,

Samson’s exhaustion after the battle revealed the limits of his physical strength. Though God had granted him victory, he still depended on the Lord for the most basic need of water.

Isa 41:17 The poor and needy seek water, but there is none;…
Psa 107:5 They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted…

Samson cried out to the LORD,

In distress, Samson turned directly to God. His prayer recognized that the God who empowered him in battle was also able to preserve his life.

2Sa 22:7 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out…
Psa 34:6 This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; …

“You have accomplished this great deliverance through Your servant.

Samson credited the defeat of the Philistines to the Lord rather than to his own strength. As Israel’s judge, he had been used by God to bring deliverance from Philistine oppression.

2Sa 3:18 Now take action, because the LORD has said to David…
1Sa 11:13 But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day,…

Must I now die of thirst

The danger was immediate despite the recent victory. Samson feared that his mission would end from thirst after God had given him strength to overcome a thousand enemies.

Exo 17:3-6 But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled…
Num 20:2-8 Now there was no water for the congregation,…

and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”

Samson did not want the Philistines, Israel’s covenant enemies, to claim victory over him. His appeal rested on God’s purpose for Israel and on the shame that would follow if a deliverer of Israel died at their hands.

1Sa 31:4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword…
1Sa 17:26 David asked the men who were standing with him,……

So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi,

God answered Samson’s desperate cry by bringing water from a hollow place at Lehi, meaning “jawbone,” the site associated with his victory over the Philistines using a jawbone. The miracle showed that the strength Samson had used in battle came ultimately from God.

Exo 17:6 Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.…
Num 20:11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice…
Psa 78:15-16 He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink…

and water came out of it.

In a dry and dangerous moment, God provided what Samson needed to live. The water was not a natural convenience but a direct act of divine mercy after Samson’s deliverance of Israel.
