Berean Study Bible Evil in the Last DaysPaul calls Timothy to recognize the seriousness of the conditions ahead and to remain alert in his ministry. 2Pe 3:3 Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days… In the last days This period includes the age between Christ’s first coming and His return, when the gospel advances amid growing rebellion and deception. Act 2:17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit… terrible times will come. Moral corruption, false teaching, and hostility toward godliness would create terrible—difficult or dangerous—conditions for the church. Timothy was to expect such opposition rather than be shaken by it. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… For men will be lovers of themselves, In the last days many will be governed by self-interest rather than devotion to God and concern for others. What was often praised as personal honor in the surrounding culture becomes sinful when self becomes the highest good. Php 2:21 For all the others look after their own interests,… lovers of money, Wealth will be pursued as a source of security, power, and pleasure. Such desire places material gain above obedience to God and readily produces injustice, dishonesty, and neglect of those in need. 1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.… boastful, They will publicly magnify their accomplishments, possessions, and status, seeking praise from others rather than giving glory to God. Rom 1:30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant,… arrogant, Their boasting will arise from prideful hearts that view others with contempt and refuse correction. Such pride rejects the humility and submission required of God’s people. 1Ti 6:4 he is conceited and understands nothing.… abusive, Their speech and conduct will wound and degrade others. Instead of using strength and influence to protect and serve, they will use them to control and oppress. Tit 3:2 malign no one, and to be peaceable and gentle… disobedient to their parents, Rebellion within the home will reveal a broader rejection of God-given authority. Honor for parents was foundational to the order and stability of Israelite family life. Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.… ungrateful, They will receive God’s provisions without acknowledging Him as the giver. Ingratitude hardens the heart and fosters complaint, entitlement, and rebellion. Luk 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them… unholy, Their lives will show disregard for what God has set apart as good and pure. They will abandon both outward reverence and the moral conduct that belongs to those who fear God. 1Ti 1:9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous,… unloving, “Unloving” describes the collapse of natural affection, especially the loyalty and care expected within families. Such coldness reveals a society in which even the closest human bonds are treated as disposable. Rom 1:31 They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless. unforgiving, “Unforgiving” portrays people who refuse reconciliation and remain hardened in resentment. They reject peace because pride, anger, or self-interest governs their relationships. Mat 18:21-35 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord,… slanderous, “Slanderous” describes people who harm others through false accusations, malicious reports, and destructive speech. Their words create suspicion and division rather than promoting truth and peace. Pro 10:18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips… without self-control, “Without self-control” describes those whose appetites, tempers, and impulses rule their lives. Rather than governing their desires, they are governed by them. Pro 25:28 Like a city whose walls are broken down… brutal, “Brutal” describes a cruel, savage disposition that lacks compassion. Such people use their strength, words, or influence to harm rather than protect. Pro 17:12 It is better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs… without love of good, “Without love of good” describes hostility toward what is upright, honorable, and pleasing to God. Moral goodness is despised or treated as weakness, while evil is embraced. Tit 1:8 Instead, he must be hospitable, a lover of good,… traitorous, Traitorous describes those who betray trust, covenant, or rightful allegiance. Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus is the clearest example of such treachery. In a time when believers faced pressure from civil authorities and hostile communities, disloyalty could endanger the entire church. Mat 24:10 At that time many will fall away and will betray… reckless, “Reckless” describes acting rashly, without restraint or regard for the consequences. Such behavior needlessly endangered Christians and others and contradicted the sober, disciplined life expected of Christ’s followers. Pro 14:16 A wise man fears and turns from evil, but a fool… conceited, Conceited describes those inflated with pride and self-importance. Although humility was often despised in the Greco-Roman world, Christ established it as essential among His people. Conceit fosters quarrels, factionalism, and resistance to correction. Rom 12:16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud.… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, Paul describes those who place personal enjoyment, comfort, and sensual desire above obedience to God as “lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (2 Tim. 3:4). Roman society openly celebrated indulgence, but devotion to temporary pleasures revealed hearts unwilling to submit to God’s authority and eternal purposes. Luk 8:14 The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear,… having a form of godliness Some in the church displayed outward religion through words, rituals, and moral appearance while remaining unchanged in heart and conduct. Their profession resembled genuine devotion but lacked obedience to Christ. Mat 23:27-28 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!… but denying its power. Godliness is not merely external; it is produced by the transforming work of God through the gospel and the Holy Spirit. Those who deny that power may speak religiously while living in ways that reject the truth they claim to believe. Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions… Turn away from such as these! Timothy was to avoid close association with professing believers whose lives consistently contradicted the faith. Such separation protected the church from hypocrisy, false teaching, and the corrupting influence of those who used religion without submitting to its authority. Rom 16:17 Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who… They are the kind who worm their way into households False teachers worked quietly through private homes, where many believers gathered for instruction and fellowship. Rather than teaching openly with apostolic authority, they gained influence through deception and personal manipulation. Tit 1:11 who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain,… and captivate vulnerable women They targeted women who were spiritually unsteady and easily influenced, drawing them into error and placing them under their control. 1Ti 5:13-15 At the same time they will also learn to be idle… who are weighed down with sins Their unresolved guilt made them receptive to teachers who offered relief without true repentance or submission to the truth. Isa 1:4 Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity… and led astray by various passions, Their sinful desires further weakened their discernment, allowing false teaching to direct them away from godliness. Tit 3:3 For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled… who are always learning They continually seek new ideas and instruction, yet their learning remains restless and undiscerning. Influenced by deceptive teachers, they gather information without submitting to God’s revealed truth. Act 17:21 Now all the Athenians and foreigners who lived there… but never able to come Their inability is moral and spiritual rather than intellectual. Sin, pride, and false teaching keep them from recognizing the truth they repeatedly encounter. Mat 13:14-15 In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled:… to a knowledge of the truth. The truth is the saving message of Jesus Christ and the life of obedience it requires. Knowledge of that truth involves understanding and accepting the gospel in faith, not merely hearing religious teaching or pursuing spiritual novelty. 1Ti 2:4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge… Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, Jannes and Jambres were the magicians associated by Jewish tradition with Pharaoh’s court, where they imitated some of the signs performed through Moses and Aaron. Though Exodus does not name them, their resistance represented Pharaoh’s attempt to withstand God’s command to release Israel. Exo 7:11-12 But Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers and magicians… so also these men oppose the truth. Like Pharaoh’s magicians, the false teachers troubling the church resisted God’s revealed message. Their teaching contradicted the gospel and sought to undermine the authority of those appointed to proclaim it. Act 13:8-10 But Elymas the sorcerer opposed them and tried to turn… They are depraved in mind Their rejection of truth had corrupted their judgment, leaving them morally and spiritually unable to discern or embrace what God had revealed. Rom 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God,… and disqualified from the faith. Their lives and teaching exposed them as unfit representatives of the Christian faith. They professed religion outwardly but stood outside the truth they claimed to uphold. 1Co 9:27 No, I discipline my body and make it my slave… But they will not advance much further. False teachers may gain influence for a time, but their opposition to God’s truth is limited. Paul assures Timothy that their work will not continue unchecked or prevail over the gospel. Pro 24:20 For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked… For just like Jannes and Jambres, Jewish tradition identifies these men as the magicians who resisted Moses before Pharaoh. They imitated some of God’s signs but could not overcome His power or prevent Israel’s deliverance. Exo 7:11-12 But Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers and magicians… their folly will be plain to everyone. Their deception would eventually be exposed, as happened with Pharaoh’s magicians. Those who corrupt the truth may deceive others temporarily, but their error and rebellion will become evident. Pro 13:16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge…
All Scripture Is God-BreathedTimothy had closely followed Paul’s instruction and ministry. Unlike those who embraced false teaching, he knew the gospel Paul proclaimed and the truth entrusted to the apostles. 2Ti 2:2 And the things that you have heard me say… my conduct, Timothy had also seen Paul’s manner of life. Paul’s actions matched his message as he served Christ with integrity, humility, and devotion amid hardship. 1Th 2:10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous… my purpose, Paul lived to fulfill Christ’s calling to proclaim the gospel, especially among the Gentiles. Every hardship and decision was governed by that commission. 2Co 5:9 So we aspire to please Him, whether we are at home… my faith, Paul’s confidence rested in the Lord and in the truth of the gospel. He remained firm in what God had promised even when opposition and suffering increased. 2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced… my patience, Paul endured resistance, misunderstanding, and persecution without abandoning his work or responding with bitterness. His endurance gave Timothy a visible example of steadfast ministry. 2Co 12:12 The marks of a true apostle—signs, wonders… my love, Paul’s concern for believers was expressed through service, correction, prayer, and sacrifice. He sought their spiritual growth and protection from error. 1Th 2:7-8 On the contrary, we were gentle among you… my perseverance, Timothy had witnessed Paul continue through repeated afflictions for Christ’s sake. His endurance showed that God sustains His servants until their work is complete. Heb 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud… my persecutions, Paul points to the opposition he personally endured because of his apostolic ministry and faithful proclamation of the gospel. His sufferings were not incidental but accompanied his work among Jews and Gentiles who resisted the message of Christ. 2Co 12:10 That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight… and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. During his first missionary journey, Paul and Barnabas were driven from Antioch in Pisidia after influential leaders stirred up opposition. In Iconium, growing hostility led them to leave before a planned assault and stoning. At Lystra, opponents from Antioch and Iconium persuaded the crowds to stone Paul and drag him outside the city, believing he had died. These places were familiar to Timothy, who likely came from Lystra and had witnessed or known well the cost of Paul’s ministry. Act 13:50-51 The Jews, however, incited the religious women… What persecutions I endured! Paul recalls these events not to magnify himself, but to show the reality of a life devoted to Christ. His ministry had been marked by repeated rejection, violence, and danger, yet he continued to preach and strengthen the churches. 2Co 11:23-25 Are they servants of Christ? I am speaking as if I were… Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. God preserved Paul through every attack and enabled him to continue the work appointed to him. Deliverance did not mean freedom from suffering, but the Lord’s faithful protection until Paul’s ministry was completed. 2Ti 4:17-18 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,… Indeed, Paul presents persecution as a certain reality, not an unusual exception, for those who remain faithful to Christ. Jhn 16:33 I have told you these things so that in Me… all who desire to live godly lives Every believer who seeks to obey God and reject the world’s values will face resistance in some form. Timothy’s ministry in Ephesus occurred amid false teaching, pagan religion, and moral corruption, making such opposition especially evident. Tit 2:11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation… in Christ Jesus Godly living flows from belonging to Christ Jesus. Union with Him gives believers a new identity, purpose, and destiny, and places them under His authority rather than the approval of the surrounding culture. Rom 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those… will be persecuted, Opposition may include rejection, slander, exclusion, legal pressure, or physical violence. Paul had endured such suffering himself and warned Timothy that faithfulness to the gospel would bring conflict with those who oppose the truth. Jhn 15:18-20 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.… while evil men and imposters False teachers continued to trouble the early church, presenting themselves as spiritual guides while corrupting the gospel and drawing believers away from apostolic teaching. Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets. They come to you… go from bad to worse, Their rebellion would deepen as they resisted God’s truth, producing increasing moral ruin and greater opposition to the church. Jer 9:3 They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth.… deceiving and being deceived. Those who spread lies also fall under the lies they promote, becoming blinded to the truth and leading others into the same error. 2Th 2:10-12 and with every wicked deception directed against those… But as for you, Paul turns directly to Timothy, setting him apart from the false teachers and moral decline described earlier. As Paul’s trusted coworker and spiritual son, Timothy bore responsibility for leading the church faithfully amid growing opposition. 2Ti 4:5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship… continue in the things you have learned Timothy was to remain steadfast in the apostolic teaching he had received rather than be drawn aside by new errors. The faith was to be preserved and passed on through faithful instruction. Php 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me… and firmly believed, His knowledge of the gospel was joined to settled conviction. Timothy had embraced these truths as God’s revelation and was to hold to them without compromise. 2Ti 1:12 For I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced… since you know from whom you have learned them. Timothy’s instruction came through reliable witnesses: his grandmother Lois, his mother Eunice, and Paul. Their sincere faith and Paul’s apostolic authority gave Timothy firm reason to trust the message entrusted to him. 2Ti 2:2 And the things that you have heard me say… From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, Timothy was taught the sacred writings from his earliest years, likely through the faithful influence of his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. That instruction gave him a lasting knowledge of God’s revelation and prepared him to recognize the promised Messiah. Deu 6:6-7 These words I am commanding you today are to be… which are able to make you wise for salvation The Scriptures reveal humanity’s sin, God’s righteousness, and His purpose to redeem His people. In the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms, God progressively disclosed His plan of salvation and pointed forward to the Savior. Psa 19:7 The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;… through faith in Christ Jesus. The Scriptures find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Their saving wisdom is received not by knowledge alone, but by trusting in Christ, whose death and resurrection provide salvation for all who believe. Gal 2:16 know that a man is not justified by works of the law… All Scripture is God-breathed Scripture originates with God, though He used human authors who wrote within real historical settings and in their own styles. God’s breath gives His written Word its authority, truthfulness, and enduring reliability. The sacred writings Timothy had known from childhood included the Old Testament, and the same divine authority extends to the apostolic writings received by the early church. 2Pe 1:20-21 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture… and is useful for instruction, Scripture teaches God’s character, His purposes in creation and redemption, and the standards by which His people are to live. It preserves the history of God’s dealings with Israel, the coming of Christ, and the establishment of His church, providing the foundation for sound doctrine. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you… for conviction, God’s Word exposes sin, unbelief, false motives, and disobedience. Its judgment is not merely external, reaching the heart and bringing people face to face with God’s holiness and their need for repentance. 1Co 14:24-25 But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in… for correction, Scripture restores what is distorted or broken by sin. It identifies error and directs believers toward truth, obedience, and faithful conduct. God’s correction is purposeful, leading His people away from destructive paths and into spiritual maturity. Heb 12:5-11 And you have forgotten the exhortation… and for training in righteousness, Scripture forms habits of godly living through continual instruction and discipline. It equips believers to pursue holiness, discern good from evil, and serve faithfully in every responsibility God gives them. 1Ti 4:7-8 But reject irreverent, silly myths.
