The Ravens Feed Elijah

Now Elijah the Tishbite,

Deu 3:12-13 So at that time we took possession of this land…
Jos 22:4 And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest…

And you are to drink from the brook,

Elijah was sent to the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan, where he would be hidden from Ahab during the drought he had announced. In this secluded place, God provided water for His servant while the land suffered from the judgment of famine.

and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”

God used ravens, birds regarded as unclean under Israel’s law, to bring Elijah food morning and evening, demonstrating His sovereignty and ability to use any means to fulfill His purposes. Their service showed that all creation remains under God’s command and that His provision does not depend on ordinary human resources.

So Elijah did what the LORD had told him,

Elijah responded without delay to God’s direction. With Ahab’s kingdom facing the drought Elijah had announced, obedience placed him under God’s protection and care.

and he went and lived by the Brook of Cherith,

Cherith, meaning “cutting” or “separation,” provided a secluded refuge during the famine and kept Elijah out of Ahab’s reach. There, separated from public ministry and dependent on God’s provision, Elijah was prepared for the events that would follow.

1Ki 18:5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go throughout the land…

east of the Jordan.

The ravens would bring him bread and meat

Though ravens were unclean birds under Israel’s law, God appointed them to feed Elijah in the wilderness. Their daily deliveries of substantial food showed that Elijah’s safety and provision rested on God’s command, not on human support during Ahab’s persecution.

and he would drink from the brook.

At the secluded brook Cherith, likely east of the Jordan, Elijah received water directly from the place God had chosen. The brook provided protection from Ahab while keeping Elijah wholly dependent on the Lord’s provision.

The drought fulfilled Elijah’s announcement of judgment against Israel’s idolatry. Baal, thought to control rain and fertility, could not provide relief, while the God of Israel continued to direct and preserve His servant.

The Widow of Zarephath

Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:

As the drought intensified during Ahab’s reign, the Lord continued to direct Elijah’s movements and ministry. Israel’s leaders had promoted Baal worship, yet God’s revelation to His prophet showed that He remained sovereign over the land, its rulers, and its resources. Elijah acted under God’s command rather than political authority, preparing to go where the Lord would provide for him during the famine.

1Ki 18:1 After a long time, in the third year of the drought…
1Ki 21:17 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite…
1Ki 21:28 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite…

“Get up and go to Zarephath of Sidon, and stay there.

With Israel under drought because of Ahab’s rebellion, God sent Elijah beyond Israel’s borders to Phoenician territory. Zarephath, meaning “smelting place,” lay near Sidon, the homeland of Jezebel, making it an unlikely refuge for the prophet who had opposed her house. Elijah’s journey required obedience as God led him into a land associated with Israel’s enemies.

Act 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go south…
Jon 3:2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh”…
Mat 10:11 Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy…

Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

God chose a widow, one of the most vulnerable people in that society, to sustain Elijah during the famine. Her limited resources would reveal that Elijah’s survival depended on God rather than human wealth or security. The provision also showed that God’s mercy and authority were not confined to Israel.

Luk 4:25-26 But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows…
2Ki 4:1-7 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…
Mrk 12:41-44 As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury,…

So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath.

Elijah obeyed the Lord’s command and traveled to Zarephath, a Phoenician city between Tyre and Sidon. Its name means “smelting place,” fitting a setting of refining for Elijah and the widow he would encounter. The location lay outside Israel and within the region associated with Jezebel’s family, yet it remained fully under God’s authority. There Elijah would experience God’s provision in a place marked by poverty and famine.

Luk 4:25-26 But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows…
Jas 5:17-18 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly…

When he arrived at the city gate,

The gate served as a public gathering place for trade, travel, and civic affairs. Elijah’s arrival brought him into contact with the person God had appointed to sustain him.

Gen 23:10-18 Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth.…
2Sa 15:2-4 He would get up early and stand beside the road…

there was a widow gathering sticks.

The widow was among the most vulnerable members of society, without the normal protection and support of a husband. Gathering sticks for fuel revealed her desperate condition as the drought had exhausted her household’s resources.

Luk 21:2-4 and He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.…
Jas 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father…

Elijah called to her and said,

Elijah addressed her according to God’s direction, beginning the encounter through which the Lord would provide for both the prophet and the widow.

2Ki 4:1-7 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…
Luk 7:13-15 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her…
Rut 2:8-9 Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen, my daughter.…

“Please bring me a little water in a cup, so that I may drink.”

Water was scarce during the drought, making the request significant. The widow’s response would reveal her willingness to act in faith despite having little left.

Gen 24:17-20 So the servant ran to meet her and said…
Mat 10:42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water…

And as she was going to get it,

As she was going to get it, the widow demonstrated customary hospitality despite the drought and her poverty. Living in Zarephath near Sidon, she was a Gentile whom God had appointed to sustain Elijah.

Mrk 5:41 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!”…
Gen 22:11-12 Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him…

“Please bring me a piece of bread.”

In a time of famine, bread was precious. Elijah’s request brought the widow’s last resources into view and led to the promise that her flour and oil would not fail.

1Sa 21:3-6 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves…
Gen 18:5-8 And I will bring a bit of bread so that you may refresh…
Luk 11:5-8 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose one of you…

But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives,

Though she lived in Phoenician Zarephath, the widow recognized the God whom Elijah served. Her oath shows that the LORD was known beyond Israel and that Elijah’s request carried the weight of a servant of the living God.

The famine had reduced her household to its last provisions.

She expected the famine to claim them after their remaining food was gone. Her hopelessness heightens the significance of the provision God would give through Elijah.

Deu 28:53-57 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
2Ki 6:28-29 Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?”…
Lam 4:9-10 Those slain by the sword are better off than those who die…

“Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her.

During the drought and famine, the widow faced the prospect of watching her son die after their final meal. Elijah spoke God’s reassurance into her desperation. Though she lived in Zarephath, within Sidonian territory and outside Israel, God had directed Elijah to her and had not overlooked her need.

Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
Luk 1:30 So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,…

“Go and do as you have said.

Elijah did not deny the severity of her situation. He acknowledged her plan while calling her to act in faith rather than despair.

Luk 5:5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night…”…
Jhn 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

But first make me a small cake of bread from what you have,

Elijah’s request placed obedience to God’s word before the widow’s immediate fear. Giving from her final supply required trust that the God who had sent Elijah would sustain her household.

2Ki 4:42-44 Now a man from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God…
Mrk 6:38-41 “Go and see how many loaves you have,” He told them.…
Jhn 6:9-11 Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish.…

and bring it out to me.

By serving Elijah, the widow acted on the instruction she had received. Her hospitality became the outward expression of her faith in God’s promised provision.

Gen 18:6-8 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…
Luk 7:44-46 And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon,…
Heb 13:2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,…

Afterward, make some for yourself and your son,

Elijah assured her that she and her son would not be abandoned. The promise prepared the way for the miracle in which her flour and oil remained sufficient throughout the famine.

Luk 4:25-26 But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows…
2Ki 4:1-7 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…
Mat 6:31-33 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’…

for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

Elijah speaks with the authority of Yahweh, Israel’s covenant God. The promise comes from God, not from the prophet, and reveals His care for the widow and her household during the famine.

2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
Jer 35:13 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
1Ki 18:36 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…

‘The jar of flour will not be exhausted

Though the land lay under drought and food supplies had become scarce, God ensured that the widow’s small store of flour continued to provide what was needed each day.

2Ki 4:42-44 Now a man from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God…
Exo 16:16-18 This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather……
Psa 132:15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;…

and the jug of oil will not run dry

The oil, essential for preparing bread, was likewise preserved. God sustained the widow, her son, and Elijah through an ongoing miracle rather than by supplying a large reserve at once.

2Ki 4:2-6 “How can I help you?” asked Elisha. “Tell me…”…
Zec 4:2-6 “What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,”…
Exo 27:20-21 And you are to command the Israelites to bring you pure oil…

until the day the LORD sends rain

The provision would continue throughout the drought, which God had brought upon the land in judgment for Israel’s idolatry. Its end would come only when He commanded the rain to return.

1Ki 18:1 After a long time, in the third year of the drought…
Jas 5:17-18 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly…
Deu 11:13-14 So if you carefully obey the commandments I am giving you…

upon the face of the earth.’”

The famine and its relief remained under God’s control. His power extended over the land, its crops, and the lives of those who depended on them.

Gen 7:4 For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth…
1Ki 8:35-36 When the skies are shut and there is no rain…
Deu 11:17 or the anger of the LORD will be kindled…

So she went and did according to the word of Elijah,

The widow of Zarephath acted on Elijah’s command despite having only enough flour and oil for one final meal. Her obedience showed confidence that the God of Israel would fulfill His promise, even in the midst of the famine. Though she was a Gentile living outside Israel, she received the prophet and trusted the word God had spoken through him.

Jhn 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
Luk 5:5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night…”…
Luk 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.…

and there was food every day for Elijah and the woman and her household.

The flour and oil continued without failing, providing daily sustenance for Elijah, the widow, and her son throughout the drought. God preserved this household by His power, demonstrating that He rules over famine and supplies the needs of those under His care.

Exo 16:4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain down bread…
Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.
Psa 37:25 I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen…

The jar of flour was not exhausted

Though the widow expected only one final meal for herself and her son, God preserved the flour through the famine. In Zarephath, outside Israel, the Lord showed that His care was not limited by national borders or human resources.

2Ki 7:16 Then the people went out and plundered the camp……
Exo 16:18 When they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much…
Jhn 6:12-13 And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples…

and the jug of oil did not run dry,

The oil, essential for preparing bread, continued alongside the flour. Day after day, the widow’s household received enough for their needs, demonstrating God’s provision during the drought.

2Ki 4:1-7 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…
Zec 4:2-6 “What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,”…
Mat 25:1-13 At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins…

according to the word that the LORD had spoken

The continuing supply fulfilled the promise God had given before the widow prepared food for Elijah. His word proved certain despite the severe conditions surrounding them.

1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

through Elijah.

Elijah, whose name means “My God is Yahweh,” served as the Lord’s prophet during Ahab’s reign, when Israel had turned toward Baal worship. Through him, God revealed His authority over the land, the weather, and the lives of those who trusted His command.

Elijah Raises the Widow’s Son

Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill,

The widow of Zarephath, who had provided for Elijah during the famine, now faced a personal crisis. As head of her household, she depended on her son for the future security of her family.

2Ki 4:18-20 And the child grew, and one day he went out…
1Ki 14:1-4 At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became ill,…
Jhn 4:46-47 So once again He came to Cana in Galilee,…

and his sickness grew worse and worse,

His condition steadily declined, deepening the widow’s distress and revealing the limits of human help.

1Ki 14:17-18 Then Jeroboam’s wife got up and departed for Tirzah,…
Mrk 5:23 My little daughter is near death. Please come…

until no breath remained in him.

The boy died, leaving the widow without hope and setting the stage for God to display His power over death through Elijah.

Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
Gen 35:29 Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered…
Luk 23:46 Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father,…

“O man of God,”

The widow recognizes Elijah as the Lord’s prophet and understands that his presence carries divine authority.

2Ki 1:9-12 Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain with his company…
2Ki 4:9 Then the woman said to her husband, “Behold, now I know…

said the woman to Elijah,

The widow of Zarephath, a Gentile living outside Israel, had received life-saving provision through Elijah during the famine. Yet her son’s death now turns her gratitude into grief and fear.

2Ki 4:28 Then she said, “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?”…
2Ki 4:1 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…

“what have you done to me?

Overwhelmed by loss, she associates Elijah’s arrival with judgment upon her household rather than with the mercy God had already shown her.

Gen 12:18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram and asked, “What have you done…
Gen 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, …

Have you come to remind me of my iniquity

She believes her suffering may be connected to her sin, fearing that God has brought her guilt to account.

Ezk 21:24 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Psa 25:7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my rebellious acts…

and cause the death of my son?”

Her son’s death leaves her without her only source of family security and hope. Her accusation sets the scene for the Lord to display His power over death through Elijah.

2Sa 12:14-18 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have shown…
1Ki 14:12-13 As for you, get up and go home. When your feet enter…

But Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.”

Elijah responds to the widow’s grief with decisive faith in the Lord’s power. Her willingness to release her son into Elijah’s care reveals the depth of her desperation and her trust in the prophet through whom God had already sustained her household.

Luk 9:41-42 “O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied.…

So he took him from her arms,

The mother’s embrace held the child she believed she had lost forever. Elijah accepts both the boy and the burden of the moment, acting as God’s servant on behalf of a grieving mother.

Luk 2:28-30 Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, saying:…
Mrk 10:13-16 Now people were bringing the little children to Jesus…

carried him to the upper room where he was staying,

The upper room provided privacy away from the household’s sorrow and activity. Elijah withdraws to seek the Lord directly, recognizing that only God can restore life.

2Ki 4:10-11 Please let us make a small room upstairs…
Act 1:13-14 When they arrived, they went to the upper room…

and laid him on his own bed.

Elijah treats the child with personal care, placing him where he himself rested. The scene prepares for the Lord’s display of authority over death and His compassion for the widow and her son.

2Ki 4:21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God.…
