English Standard VersionGreek Study Bible
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.1Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ὥστε ἐκβάλλειν αὐτὰ καὶ θεραπεύειν πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν
The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;2Τῶν δὲ δώδεκα ἀποστόλων τὰ ὀνόματά ἐστιν ταῦτα πρῶτος Σίμων λεγόμενος Πέτρος καὶ Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἰάκωβος τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννης ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;3Φίλιππος καὶ Βαρθολομαῖος Θωμᾶς καὶ Μαθθαῖος τελώνης Ἰάκωβος τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καὶ Θαδδαῖος
Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.4Σίμων Καναναῖος καὶ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης καὶ παραδοὺς αὐτόν
These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans,5Τούτους τοὺς δώδεκα ἀπέστειλεν Ἰησοῦς παραγγείλας αὐτοῖς λέγων Εἰς ὁδὸν ἐθνῶν μὴ ἀπέλθητε καὶ εἰς πόλιν Σαμαριτῶν μὴ εἰσέλθητε
but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.6πορεύεσθε δὲ μᾶλλον πρὸς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ
And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’7πορευόμενοι δὲ κηρύσσετε λέγοντες ὅτι Ἤγγικεν βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.8ἀσθενοῦντας θεραπεύετε νεκροὺς ἐγείρετε λεπροὺς καθαρίζετε δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλετε δωρεὰν ἐλάβετε δωρεὰν δότε
Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts,9Μὴ κτήσησθε χρυσὸν μηδὲ ἄργυρον μηδὲ χαλκὸν εἰς τὰς ζώνας ὑμῶν
no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.10μὴ πήραν εἰς ὁδὸν μηδὲ δύο χιτῶνας μηδὲ ὑποδήματα μηδὲ ῥάβδον ἄξιος γὰρ ἐργάτης τῆς τροφῆς αὐτοῦ
And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart.11Εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν πόλιν κώμην εἰσέλθητε ἐξετάσατε τίς ἐν αὐτῇ ἄξιός ἐστιν κἀκεῖ μείνατε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε
As you enter the house, greet it.12εἰσερχόμενοι δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ἀσπάσασθε αὐτήν
And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.13καὶ ἐὰν μὲν οἰκία ἀξία ἐλθάτω εἰρήνη ὑμῶν ἐπ’ αὐτήν ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀξία εἰρήνη ὑμῶν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐπιστραφήτω
And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.14καὶ ὃς ἂν μὴ δέξηται ὑμᾶς μηδὲ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους ὑμῶν ἐξερχόμενοι ἔξω τῆς οἰκίας τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης ἐκτινάξατε τὸν κονιορτὸν τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν
Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.15ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται γῇ Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρων ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ
“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.16Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρόβατα ἐν μέσῳ λύκων γίνεσθε οὖν φρόνιμοι ὡς οἱ ὄφεις καὶ ἀκέραιοι ὡς αἱ περιστεραί
Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues,17Προσέχετε δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων παραδώσουσιν γὰρ ὑμᾶς εἰς συνέδρια καὶ ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν μαστιγώσουσιν ὑμᾶς
and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.18καὶ ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνας δὲ καὶ βασιλεῖς ἀχθήσεσθε ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν
When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.19ὅταν δὲ παραδῶσιν ὑμᾶς μὴ μεριμνήσητε πῶς τί λαλήσητε δοθήσεται γὰρ ὑμῖν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ τί λαλήσητε
For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.20οὐ γὰρ ὑμεῖς ἐστε οἱ λαλοῦντες ἀλλὰ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν τὸ λαλοῦν ἐν ὑμῖν
Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death,21Παραδώσει δὲ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν εἰς θάνατον καὶ πατὴρ τέκνον καὶ ἐπαναστήσονται τέκνα ἐπὶ γονεῖς καὶ θανατώσουσιν αὐτούς
and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.22καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος οὗτος σωθήσεται
When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.23Ὅταν δὲ διώκωσιν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ φεύγετε εἰς τὴν ἑτέραν ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ τελέσητε τὰς πόλεις τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἕως ‹ἂν› ἔλθῃ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.24Οὐκ ἔστιν μαθητὴς ὑπὲρ τὸν διδάσκαλον οὐδὲ δοῦλος ὑπὲρ τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ
It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.25ἀρκετὸν τῷ μαθητῇ ἵνα γένηται ὡς διδάσκαλος αὐτοῦ καὶ δοῦλος ὡς κύριος αὐτοῦ εἰ τὸν οἰκοδεσπότην Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐπεκάλεσαν πόσῳ μᾶλλον τοὺς οἰκιακοὺς αὐτοῦ
“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.26Μὴ οὖν φοβηθῆτε αὐτούς οὐδὲν γάρ ἐστιν κεκαλυμμένον οὐκ ἀποκαλυφθήσεται καὶ κρυπτὸν οὐ γνωσθήσεται
What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.27 λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ εἴπατε ἐν τῷ φωτί καὶ εἰς τὸ οὖς ἀκούετε κηρύξατε ἐπὶ τῶν δωμάτων
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.28Καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεννόντων τὸ σῶμα τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμένων ἀποκτεῖναι φοβεῖσθε δὲ μᾶλλον τὸν δυνάμενον καὶ ψυχὴν καὶ σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γεέννῃ
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.29Οὐχὶ δύο στρουθία ἀσσαρίου πωλεῖται καὶ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐ πεσεῖται ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἄνευ τοῦ Πατρὸς ὑμῶν
But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.30ὑμῶν δὲ καὶ αἱ τρίχες τῆς κεφαλῆς πᾶσαι ἠριθμημέναι εἰσίν
Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.31μὴ οὖν φοβεῖσθε πολλῶν στρουθίων διαφέρετε ὑμεῖς
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,32Πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ὁμολογήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὁμολογήσω κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.33ὅστις δ’ ἂν ἀρνήσηταί με ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀρνήσομαι κἀγὼ αὐτὸν ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Πατρός μου τοῦ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.34Μὴ νομίσητε ὅτι ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν οὐκ ἦλθον βαλεῖν εἰρήνην ἀλλὰ μάχαιραν
For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.35ἦλθον γὰρ διχάσαι Ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Καὶ θυγατέρα κατὰ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Καὶ νύμφην κατὰ τῆς πενθερᾶς αὐτῆς
And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.36Καὶ ἐχθροὶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οἱ οἰκιακοὶ αὐτοῦ
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.37 φιλῶν πατέρα μητέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος καὶ φιλῶν υἱὸν θυγατέρα ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος
And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.38καὶ ὃς οὐ λαμβάνει τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀκολουθεῖ ὀπίσω μου οὐκ ἔστιν μου ἄξιος
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.39 εὑρὼν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν καὶ ἀπολέσας τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ εὑρήσει αὐτήν
“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.40 δεχόμενος ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ δέχεται καὶ ἐμὲ δεχόμενος δέχεται τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με
The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.41 δεχόμενος προφήτην εἰς ὄνομα προφήτου μισθὸν προφήτου λήμψεται καὶ δεχόμενος δίκαιον εἰς ὄνομα δικαίου μισθὸν δικαίου λήμψεται
And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”42καὶ ὃς ἂν* ποτίσῃ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν τούτων ποτήριον ψυχροῦ μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ
