If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,1Εἴ τις οὖν παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ εἴ τι παραμύθιον ἀγάπης εἴ τις κοινωνία Πνεύματος εἴ τις σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί
make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.2πληρώσατέ μου τὴν χαρὰν ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε τὴν αὐτὴν ἀγάπην ἔχοντες σύμψυχοι τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.3μηδὲν κατ’ ἐριθείαν μηδὲ κατὰ κενοδοξίαν ἀλλὰ τῇ ταπεινοφροσύνῃ ἀλλήλους ἡγούμενοι ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν
Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.4μὴ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἕκαστοι σκοποῦντες ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ἑτέρων ἕκαστοι
Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,5Τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited.6Ὃς ἐν μορφῇ Θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα Θεῷ
Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man,7ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν μορφὴν δούλου λαβών ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death--even to death on a cross.8καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ
For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,9Διὸ καὶ Θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα
so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow--in heaven and on earth and under the earth--10ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων
and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.11καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι ΚΥΡΙΟΣ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ Πατρός
Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.12Ὥστε ἀγαπητοί μου καθὼς πάντοτε ὑπηκούσατε μὴ ὡς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ μου μόνον ἀλλὰ νῦν πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐν τῇ ἀπουσίᾳ μου μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε
For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose.13Θεὸς γάρ ἐστιν ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ τὸ θέλειν καὶ τὸ ἐνεργεῖν ὑπὲρ τῆς εὐδοκίας
Do everything without grumbling and arguing,14Πάντα ποιεῖτε χωρὶς γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν
so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world,15ἵνα γένησθε ἄμεμπτοι καὶ ἀκέραιοι τέκνα Θεοῦ ἄμωμα μέσον γενεᾶς σκολιᾶς καὶ διεστραμμένης ἐν οἷς φαίνεσθε ὡς φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ
by holding firm to the word of life. Then I can boast in the day of Christ that I didn't run or labor for nothing.16λόγον ζωῆς ἐπέχοντες εἰς καύχημα ἐμοὶ εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ ὅτι οὐκ εἰς κενὸν ἔδραμον οὐδὲ εἰς κενὸν ἐκοπίασα
But even if I am poured out as a drink offering on the sacrificial service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.17Ἀλλὰ εἰ καὶ σπένδομαι ἐπὶ τῇ θυσίᾳ καὶ λειτουργίᾳ τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν χαίρω καὶ συνχαίρω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν
In the same way you should also be glad and rejoice with me.18τὸ δὲ αὐτὸ καὶ ὑμεῖς χαίρετε καὶ συνχαίρετέ μοι
Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon so that I too may be encouraged by news about you.19Ἐλπίζω δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ Ἰησοῦ Τιμόθεον ταχέως πέμψαι ὑμῖν ἵνα κἀγὼ εὐψυχῶ γνοὺς τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν
For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests;20οὐδένα γὰρ ἔχω ἰσόψυχον ὅστις γνησίως τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν μεριμνήσει
all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.21οἱ πάντες γὰρ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ζητοῦσιν οὐ τὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ
But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father.22τὴν δὲ δοκιμὴν αὐτοῦ γινώσκετε ὅτι ὡς πατρὶ τέκνον σὺν ἐμοὶ ἐδούλευσεν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον
Therefore, I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.23Τοῦτον μὲν οὖν ἐλπίζω πέμψαι ὡς ἂν ἀφίδω τὰ περὶ ἐμὲ ἐξαυτῆς
I am confident in the Lord that I myself will also come soon.24πέποιθα δὲ ἐν Κυρίῳ ὅτι καὶ αὐτὸς ταχέως ἐλεύσομαι
But I considered it necessary to send you Epaphroditus--my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need--25Ἀναγκαῖον δὲ ἡγησάμην Ἐπαφρόδιτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν καὶ συνεργὸν καὶ συστρατιώτην μου ὑμῶν δὲ ἀπόστολον καὶ λειτουργὸν τῆς χρείας μου πέμψαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς
since he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was sick.26ἐπειδὴ ἐπιποθῶν ἦν πάντας ὑμᾶς (ἰδεῖν) καὶ ἀδημονῶν διότι ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἠσθένησεν
Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.27καὶ γὰρ ἠσθένησεν παραπλήσιον θανάτῳ ἀλλὰ Θεὸς ἠλέησεν αὐτόν οὐκ αὐτὸν δὲ μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐμέ ἵνα μὴ λύπην ἐπὶ λύπην σχῶ
For this reason, I am very eager to send him so that you may rejoice again when you see him and I may be less anxious.28Σπουδαιοτέρως οὖν ἔπεμψα αὐτὸν ἵνα ἰδόντες αὐτὸν πάλιν χαρῆτε κἀγὼ ἀλυπότερος
Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with great joy and hold people like him in honor,29προσδέχεσθε οὖν αὐτὸν ἐν Κυρίῳ μετὰ πάσης χαρᾶς καὶ τοὺς τοιούτους ἐντίμους ἔχετε
because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up what was lacking in your ministry to me.30ὅτι διὰ τὸ ἔργον Χριστοῦ μέχρι θανάτου ἤγγισεν παραβολευσάμενος τῇ ψυχῇ ἵνα ἀναπληρώσῃ τὸ ὑμῶν ὑστέρημα τῆς πρός με λειτουργίας
