Jerusalem’s Unfaithfulness

1  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), הוֹדַ֥ע (make known) אֶת־ (-) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (to Jerusalem) אֶת־ (-) תּוֹעֲבֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (her abominations), 3  וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ (and say), כֹּה־ (thus) אָמַ֨ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֤י (the Lord) יְהוִה֙ (YHWH) לִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (to Jerusalem); מְכֹרֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (Your origin) וּמֹ֣לְדֹתַ֔יִךְ (and your birth are) מֵאֶ֖רֶץ (from the land) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑י (of the Canaanite); אָבִ֥יךְ (your father was) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (an Amorite), וְאִמֵּ֥ךְ (and your mother) חִתִּֽית׃ (a Hittite). 4  וּמוֹלְדוֹתַ֗יִךְ (And of your birth), בְּי֨וֹם (on the day) הוּלֶּ֤דֶת (were born) אֹתָךְ֙ (you) לֹֽא־ (not) כָרַּ֣ת (was cut), שָׁרֵּ֔ךְ (your cord) וּבְמַ֥יִם (and in water) לֹֽא־ (not) רֻחַ֖צְתְּ (were you washed) לְמִשְׁעִ֑י (for cleansing) וְהָמְלֵ֙חַ֙ (and salted), לֹ֣א (not) הֻמְלַ֔חַתְּ (with salt you were rubbed), וְהָחְתֵּ֖ל (and swaddling) לֹ֥א (not) חֻתָּֽלְתְּ׃ (you were wrapped with swaddling). 5  לֹא־ (Not) חָ֨סָה (did show pity) עָלַ֜יִךְ (to you) עַ֗יִן (an eye) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) לָ֛ךְ (for you) אַחַ֥ת (one) מֵאֵ֖לֶּה (of these things) לְחֻמְלָ֣ה (to have compassion) עָלָ֑יִךְ (on you) וַֽתֻּשְׁלְכִ֞י (and you were thrown out) אֶל־ (into) פְּנֵ֤י (the face) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field), בְּגֹ֣עַל (in the loathing) נַפְשֵׁ֔ךְ (of your soul), בְּי֖וֹם (on the day) הֻלֶּ֥דֶת (were born) אֹתָֽךְ׃ (you).

6  וָאֶעֱבֹ֤ר (And I passed) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (by you) וָֽאֶרְאֵ֔ךְ (and saw you) מִתְבּוֹסֶ֖סֶת (wallowing) בְּדָמָ֑יִךְ (in your own blood), וָאֹ֤מַר (and I said) לָךְ֙ (to you) בְּדָמַ֣יִךְ (in your blood), חֲיִ֔י (Live); וָאֹ֥מַר (and I said) לָ֖ךְ (to you) בְּדָמַ֥יִךְ (in your blood), חֲיִֽי׃ (Live). 7  רְבָבָ֗ה (A myriad) כְּצֶ֤מַח (like a plant in) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (the field), נְתַתִּ֔יךְ (I made you) וַתִּרְבִּי֙ (and you increased) וַֽתִּגְדְּלִ֔י (and grew), וַתָּבֹ֖אִי (and came) בַּעֲדִ֣י (into the adornment) עֲדָיִ֑ים (of adornments) שָׁדַ֤יִם (your breasts) נָכֹ֙נוּ֙ (were established), וּשְׂעָרֵ֣ךְ (and your hair) צִמֵּ֔חַ (sprouted), וְאַ֖תְּ (and you were) עֵרֹ֥ם (naked) וְעֶרְיָֽה׃ (and bare).

8  וָאֶעֱבֹ֨ר (And I passed) עָלַ֜יִךְ (by you) וָאֶרְאֵ֗ךְ (and I saw you) וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), עִתֵּךְ֙ (your time was) עֵ֣ת (the time for) דֹּדִ֔ים (love); וָאֶפְרֹ֤שׂ (and I spread) כְּנָפִי֙ (My wing) עָלַ֔יִךְ (over you) וָאֲכַסֶּ֖ה (and covered) עֶרְוָתֵ֑ךְ (your nakedness). וָאֶשָּׁ֣בַֽע (And I swore an oath) לָ֠ךְ (to you) וָאָב֨וֹא (and came) בִבְרִ֜ית (into a covenant) אֹתָ֗ךְ (with you) נְאֻ֛ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH), וַתִּ֥הְיִי (and you came to be) לִֽי׃ (unto Me). 9  וָאֶרְחָצֵ֣ךְ (And I washed you) בַּמַּ֔יִם (with the water); וָאֶשְׁטֹ֥ף (and I rinsed off) דָּמַ֖יִךְ (your blood) מֵֽעָלָ֑יִךְ (from you) וָאֲסֻכֵ֖ךְ (and I anointed you) בַּשָּֽׁמֶן׃ (with the oil). 10  וָאַלְבִּישֵׁ֣ךְ (And I clothed you) רִקְמָ֔ה (in embroidered cloth), וָאֶנְעֲלֵ֖ךְ (and gave you sandals) תָּ֑חַשׁ (of badger skin), וָאֶחְבְּשֵׁ֣ךְ (and I tied you) בַּשֵּׁ֔שׁ (in fine linen), וַאֲכַסֵּ֖ךְ (and I covered you) מֶֽשִׁי׃ (with silk). 11  וָאֶעְדֵּ֖ךְ (And I adorned you) עֶ֑דִי (with ornaments), וָאֶתְּנָ֤ה (and I put) צְמִידִים֙ (bracelets) עַל־ (on) יָדַ֔יִךְ (your hands), וְרָבִ֖יד (and a chain) עַל־ (on) גְּרוֹנֵֽךְ׃ (your neck). 12  וָאֶתֵּ֥ן (And I put) נֶ֙זֶם֙ (a ring) עַל־ (upon) אַפֵּ֔ךְ (your nose), וַעֲגִילִ֖ים (and earrings) עַל־ (upon) אָזְנָ֑יִךְ (your ears), וַעֲטֶ֥רֶת (and a crown) תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת (of beauty) בְּרֹאשֵֽׁךְ׃ (upon your head).

13  וַתַּעְדִּ֞י (And you were adorned) זָהָ֣ב (with gold) וָכֶ֗סֶף (and silver); וּמַלְבּוּשֵׁךְ֙ (and your clothing was) שֵׁשִׁי (of fine linen), וָמֶ֙שִׁי֙ (and silk), וְרִקְמָ֔ה (and embroidered cloth); סֹ֧לֶת (fine flour), וּדְבַ֛שׁ (and honey), וָשֶׁ֖מֶן (and oil); אָכָלְתִּי (did you eat) וַתִּ֙יפִי֙ (and you were beautiful), בִּמְאֹ֣ד (exceedingly) מְאֹ֔ד (greatly) וַֽתִּצְלְחִ֖י (and you advanced) לִמְלוּכָֽה׃ (to royalty). 14  וַיֵּ֨צֵא (And went forth) לָ֥ךְ (for you) שֵׁ֛ם (a name) בַּגּוֹיִ֖ם (among the nations) בְּיָפְיֵ֑ךְ (on account of your beauty), כִּ֣י׀ (for) כָּלִ֣יל (perfect) ה֗וּא (it was) בַּֽהֲדָרִי֙ (in My splendor), אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שַׂ֣מְתִּי (I had set) עָלַ֔יִךְ (upon you) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

15  וַתִּבְטְחִ֣י (And you trusted) בְיָפְיֵ֔ךְ (in your own beauty), וַתִּזְנִ֖י (and acted as a prostitute) עַל־ (upon) שְׁמֵ֑ךְ (your name), וַתִּשְׁפְּכִ֧י (and you poured out) אֶת־ (-) תַּזְנוּתַ֛יִךְ (your prostitution) עַל־ (on) כָּל־ (everyone) עוֹבֵ֖ר (passing by); לוֹ־ (for him) יֶֽהִי׃ (to came to belong). 16  וַתִּקְחִ֣י (And you took), מִבְּגָדַ֗יִךְ (from your garments) וַתַּֽעֲשִׂי־ (and made) לָךְ֙ (for yourself) בָּמ֣וֹת (high places) טְלֻא֔וֹת (multicolored), וַתִּזְנִ֖י (and you prostituted yourself) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (on them); לֹ֥א (things not) בָא֖וֹת (should have happened), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (should have come to be).

17  וַתִּקְחִ֞י (And you have taken) כְּלֵ֣י (the articles) תִפְאַרְתֵּ֗ךְ (of your beauty) מִזְּהָבִ֤י (from My gold) וּמִכַּסְפִּי֙ (and from My silver), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) נָתַ֣תִּי (I had given) לָ֔ךְ (to you) וַתַּעֲשִׂי־ (and you made) לָ֖ךְ (for yourself) צַלְמֵ֣י (images) זָכָ֑ר (of a male), וַתִּזְנִי־ (and prostituted yourself) בָֽם׃ (with them). 18  וַתִּקְחִ֛י (And you took) אֶת־ (-) בִּגְדֵ֥י (the garments), רִקְמָתֵ֖ךְ (of your embroidery) וַתְּכַסִּ֑ים (and covered them) וְשַׁמְנִי֙ (and My oil) וּקְטָרְתִּ֔י (and My incense) נָתַתִּי (a nd you set) לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before their faces). 19  וְלַחְמִי֩ (And My food) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֨תִּי (I gave) לָ֜ךְ (to you) סֹ֣לֶת (the fine flour), וָשֶׁ֤מֶן (and oil), וּדְבַשׁ֙ (and honey), הֶֽאֱכַלְתִּ֔יךְ (I fed you) וּנְתַתִּ֧יהוּ (and you set it) לִפְנֵיהֶ֛ם (before their face) לְרֵ֥יחַ (for an aroma); נִיחֹ֖חַ (pleasing) וַיֶּ֑הִי (and it came to pass), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

20  וַתִּקְחִ֞י (And you took) אֶת־ (-) בָּנַ֤יִךְ (your sons) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (your daughters), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (those whom) יָלַ֣דְתְּ (you bore) לִ֔י (to Me) וַתִּזְבָּחִ֥ים (and you sacrificed them) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) לֶאֱכ֑וֹל (to be devoured). הַמְעַ֖ט (A small matter), מִתַּזְנֻתֵךְ׃ (was your prostitution). 21  וַֽתִּשְׁחֲטִ֖י (And you have slain) אֶת־ (-) בָּנָ֑י (My children), וַֽתִּתְּנִ֔ים (and have given them) בְּהַעֲבִ֥יר (by causing to pass through) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them).

22  וְאֵ֤ת (And) כָּל־ (in all) תּוֹעֲבֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (your abominations) וְתַזְנֻתַ֔יִךְ (and your prostitutions) לֹ֥א (not) זָכַרְתִּי (did you remember) אֶת־ (-) יְמֵ֣י (the days) נְעוּרָ֑יִךְ (of your youth), בִּֽהְיוֹתֵךְ֙ (in your being) עֵרֹ֣ם (naked) וְעֶרְיָ֔ה (and bare), מִתְבּוֹסֶ֥סֶת (wallowing) בְּדָמֵ֖ךְ (in your own blood) הָיִֽית׃ (you were).

23  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) כָּל־ (all) רָעָתֵ֑ךְ (your evil), א֣וֹי (Woe), א֣וֹי (woe) לָ֔ךְ (to you) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH). 24  וַתִּבְנִי־ (That you built) לָ֖ךְ (for yourself) גֶּ֑ב (a mound), וַתַּעֲשִׂי־ (and you set) לָ֥ךְ (for yourself) רָמָ֖ה (a high place) בְּכָל־ (in every) רְחֽוֹב׃ (public square). 25  אֶל־ (At) כָּל־ (every) רֹ֣אשׁ (head) דֶּ֗רֶךְ (of the road), בָּנִית֙ (you built) רָֽמָתֵ֔ךְ (your high places) וַתְּתַֽעֲבִי֙ (and made abhorrent), אֶת־ (-) יָפְיֵ֔ךְ (and your beauty) וַתְּפַשְּׂקִ֥י (by your opening) אֶת־ (-) רַגְלַ֖יִךְ (your feet) לְכָל־ (to all) עוֹבֵ֑ר (passing by), וַתַּרְבִּ֖י (and you multiplied) אֶת־ (-) תַּזְנֻתֵךְ׃ (your prostitutions). 26  וַתִּזְנִ֧י (And you prostituted yourself) אֶל־ (with) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) שְׁכֵנַ֖יִךְ (your neighbors), גִּדְלֵ֣י (greatly) בָשָׂ֑ר (fleshly); וַתַּרְבִּ֥י (and you multiplied) אֶת־ (-) תַּזְנֻתֵ֖ךְ (your prostitutions), לְהַכְעִיסֵֽנִי׃ (to provoke Me to anger).

27  וְהִנֵּ֨ה (So, behold), נָטִ֤יתִי (I did stretch out) יָדִי֙ (My hand) עָלַ֔יִךְ (against you) וָאֶגְרַ֖ע (and diminished) חֻקֵּ֑ךְ (your portion) וָאֶתְּנֵ֞ךְ (and I gave you over) בְּנֶ֤פֶשׁ (to the appetite) שֹׂנְאוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (of those hating you) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines), הַנִּכְלָמ֖וֹת (who were ashamed) מִדַּרְכֵּ֥ךְ (of your way) זִמָּֽה׃ (of prostitution). 28  וַתִּזְנִי֙ (And you prostituted yourself) אֶל־ (with) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria) מִבִּלְתִּ֖י (lacking) שָׂבְעָתֵ֑ךְ (your being satisfied). וַתִּזְנִ֕ים (And you prostituted yourself with them) וְגַ֖ם (and still) לֹ֥א (not) שָׂבָֽעַתְּ׃ (were you satisfied). 29  וַתַּרְבִּ֧י (And you multiplied) אֶת־ (-) תַּזְנוּתֵ֛ךְ (your prostitutions) אֶל־ (into) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) כְּנַ֖עַן (of the merchants) כַּשְׂדִּ֑ימָה (of Chaldea); וְגַם־ (and even) בְּזֹ֖את (in this) לֹ֥א (not) שָׂבָֽעַתְּ׃ (were you satisfied).

30  מָ֤ה (How) אֲמֻלָה֙ (weak is) לִבָּתֵ֔ךְ (your heart), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH), בַּעֲשׂוֹתֵךְ֙ (in your doing) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֵ֔לֶּה (these) מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (deeds) אִשָּֽׁה־ (of a woman); זוֹנָ֖ה (prostitute) שַׁלָּֽטֶת׃ (imperious). 31  בִּבְנוֹתַ֤יִךְ (In your building) גַּבֵּךְ֙ (your mounds) בְּרֹ֣אשׁ (the head) כָּל־ (of every) דֶּ֔רֶךְ (road), וְרָמָתֵ֥ךְ (and your high place) עָשִׂיתִי (you made) בְּכָל־ (in every) רְח֑וֹב (public square); וְלֹא־ (and not) הָיִיתי (were you) כַּזּוֹנָ֖ה (exactly like a prostitute), לְקַלֵּ֥ס (because of your scorning of) אֶתְנָֽן׃ (a prostitute’s payment).

32  הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (You are the woman) הַמְּנָאָ֑פֶת (committing adultery), תַּ֣חַת (who in place) אִישָׁ֔הּ (of her husband)! תִּקַּ֖ח (Does receive) אֶת־ (-) זָרִֽים׃ (strangers). 33  לְכָל־ (To all) זֹנ֖וֹת (prostitutes), יִתְּנוּ־ (they give) נֵ֑דֶה (a gift) וְאַ֨תְּ (and you) נָתַ֤תְּ (you gave) אֶת־ (-) נְדָנַ֙יִךְ֙ (your gifts) לְכָל־ (to all) מְאַֽהֲבַ֔יִךְ (your lovers), וַתִּשְׁחֳדִ֣י (and bribed) אוֹתָ֗ם (them) לָב֥וֹא (to come) אֵלַ֛יִךְ (to you) מִסָּבִ֖יב (from all around) בְּתַזְנוּתָֽיִךְ׃ (in your prostitutions). 34  וַיְהִי־ (And it is) בָ֨ךְ (with you) הֵ֤פֶךְ (the opposite) מִן־ (from) הַנָּשִׁים֙ (other women) בְּתַזְנוּתַ֔יִךְ (in your prostitution), וְאַחֲרַ֖יִךְ (and was after you) לֹ֣א (not did anyone) זוּנָּ֑ה (pursue you for prostitution); וּבְתִתֵּ֣ךְ (and you gave) אֶתְנָ֗ן (a wage), וְאֶתְנַ֛ן (and a wage) לֹ֥א (not) נִתַּן־ (was given) לָ֖ךְ (to you) וַתְּהִ֥י (and you are) לְהֶֽפֶךְ׃ (the opposite).

Judgment on Jerusalem

35  לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore), זוֹנָ֔ה (O prostitute), שִׁמְעִ֖י (hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH). 36  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהֹוִ֗ה (YHWH); יַ֣עַן (because) הִשָּׁפֵ֤ךְ (was poured out), נְחֻשְׁתֵּךְ֙ (your lust) וַתִּגָּלֶ֣ה (and was uncovered) עֶרְוָתֵ֔ךְ (your nakedness) בְּתַזְנוּתַ֖יִךְ (in your prostitutions) עַל־ (with) מְאַהֲבָ֑יִךְ (your lovers), וְעַל֙ (and with) כָּל־ (all) גִּלּוּלֵ֣י (the idols) תוֹעֲבוֹתַ֔יִךְ (of your abominations), וְכִדְמֵ֣י (and because of the blood) בָנַ֔יִךְ (of your children), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) נָתַ֖תְּ (you gave) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them). 37  לָ֠כֵן (Therefore) הִנְנִ֨י (behold, I) מְקַבֵּ֤ץ (am going to gather) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) מְאַהֲבַ֙יִךְ֙ (your lovers), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) עָרַ֣בְתְּ (you took pleasure), עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (with them) וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (those whom) אָהַ֔בְתְּ (you loved), עַ֖ל (along with) כָּל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (those) שָׂנֵ֑את (you hated); וְקִבַּצְתִּי֩ (and I will gather) אֹתָ֨ם (them) עָלַ֜יִךְ (against you) מִסָּבִ֗יב (from all around) וְגִלֵּיתִ֤י (and I will uncover) עֶרְוָתֵךְ֙ (your nakedness) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them) וְרָא֖וּ (that they may see) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עֶרְוָתֵֽךְ׃ (your nakedness). 38  וּשְׁפַטְתִּיךְ֙ (And I will judge you) מִשְׁפְּטֵ֣י (with the judgments); נֹאֲפ֔וֹת (of those committing adultery) וְשֹׁפְכֹ֖ת (and shedding) דָּ֑ם (blood) וּנְתַתִּ֕יךְ (and I will bring upon you) דַּ֥ם (the blood) חֵמָ֖ה (of rage) וְקִנְאָֽה׃ (and jealousy).

39  וְנָתַתִּ֨י (And I will give) אוֹתָ֜ךְ (you) בְּיָדָ֗ם (into their hands), וְהָרְס֤וּ (and they will overthrow) גַבֵּךְ֙ (your shrines), וְנִתְּצ֣וּ (and they will break down) רָמֹתַ֔יִךְ (your high places); וְהִפְשִׁ֤יטוּ (and they will strip) אוֹתָךְ֙ (you) בְּגָדַ֔יִךְ (of your clothes), וְלָקְח֖וּ (and take away) כְּלֵ֣י (the articles), תִפְאַרְתֵּ֑ךְ (of your beauty) וְהִנִּיח֖וּךְ (and they will leave you) עֵירֹ֥ם (naked) וְעֶרְיָֽה׃ (and bare). 40  וְהֶעֱל֤וּ (And they will bring up) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (against you) קָהָ֔ל (an assembly) וְרָגְמ֥וּ (and they will stone) אוֹתָ֖ךְ (you) בָּאָ֑בֶן (with stones), וּבִתְּק֖וּךְ (and they will cut you up) בְּחַרְבוֹתָֽם׃ (with their swords). 41  וְשָׂרְפ֤וּ (And they will burn) בָתַּ֙יִךְ֙ (your houses) בָּאֵ֔שׁ (with fire), וְעָשׂוּ־ (and they will execute) בָ֣ךְ (against you) שְׁפָטִ֔ים (judgment) לְעֵינֵ֖י (before the eyes) נָשִׁ֣ים (of women). רַבּ֑וֹת (Many)

וְהִשְׁבַּתִּיךְ֙ (and I will put an end) מִזּוֹנָ֔ה (to your prostitution), וְגַם־ (and even) אֶתְנַ֖ן (a single lover) לֹ֥א (not) תִתְּנִי־ (pay) עֽוֹד׃ (again). 42  וַהֲנִחֹתִ֤י (And I will lay to rest), חֲמָתִי֙ (My fury) בָּ֔ךְ (against you) וְסָ֥רָה (and will turn aside) קִנְאָתִ֖י (My jealousy) מִמֵּ֑ךְ (from you) וְשָׁ֣קַטְתִּ֔י (and I will be quiet), וְלֹ֥א (and not) אֶכְעַ֖ס (will I be angry) עֽוֹד׃ (anymore).

43  יַ֗עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) זָכַרְתִּי (you did remember) אֶת־ (-) יְמֵ֣י (the days) נְעוּרַ֔יִךְ (of your youth), וַתִּרְגְּזִי־ (and you caused enragement) לִ֖י (to Me) בְּכָל־ (with all) אֵ֑לֶּה (these things) וְגַם־ (also) אֲנִ֨י (I) הֵ֜א (behold), דַּרְכֵּ֣ךְ׀ (your way) בְּרֹ֣אשׁ (on your head), נָתַ֗תִּי (will recompense) נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); וְלֹ֤א (and have not) עָשִׂיתִי (you done) אֶת־ (-) הַזִּמָּ֔ה (this wickedness) עַ֖ל (in addition to) כָּל־ (all) תּוֹעֲבֹתָֽיִךְ׃ (your abominations).

44  הִנֵּה֙ (Behold), כָּל־ (everyone) הַמֹּשֵׁ֔ל (quoting proverbs) עָלַ֥יִךְ (against you) יִמְשֹׁ֖ל (will use this proverb) לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

כְּאִמָּ֖ה (Like her mother), בִּתָּֽהּ׃ (is her daughter).

45  בַּת־ (The daughter), אִמֵּ֣ךְ (of your mother) אַ֔תְּ (you are) גֹּעֶ֥לֶת (loathing) אִישָׁ֖הּ (her husband) וּבָנֶ֑יהָ (and her children); וַאֲח֨וֹת (and sister) אֲחוֹתֵ֜ךְ (of your sisters), אַ֗תְּ (you are) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (those who) גָּֽעֲ֙לוּ֙ (loathed) אַנְשֵׁיהֶ֣ן (their husbands) וּבְנֵיהֶ֔ן (and children). אִמְּכֶ֣ן (Your⁺ mother was) חִתִּ֔ית (a Hittite) וַאֲבִיכֶ֖ן (and your⁺ father) אֱמֹרִֽי׃ (an Amorite). 46  וַאֲחוֹתֵ֨ךְ (And your sister) הַגְּדוֹלָ֤ה (elder) שֹֽׁמְרוֹן֙ (is Samaria), הִ֣יא (she) וּבְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ (and her daughters) הַיּוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת (dwelling) עַל־ (to) שְׂמֹאולֵ֑ךְ (the north of you); וַאֲחוֹתֵ֞ךְ (and the sister), הַקְּטַנָּ֣ה (younger) מִמֵּ֗ךְ (for you), הַיּוֹשֶׁ֙בֶת֙ (dwelling) מִֽימִינֵ֔ךְ (to the south of you), סְדֹ֖ם (is Sodom) וּבְנוֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (and her daughters). 47  וְלֹ֤א (And not only) בְדַרְכֵיהֶן֙ (in their ways), הָלַ֔כְתְּ (did you walk) וּבְתוֹעֲבֽוֹתֵיהֶ֖ן (and according to their abominations); עָשִׂיתִי (you acted) כִּמְעַ֣ט (as if too) קָ֔ט (little) וַתַּשְׁחִ֥תִי (and you became more corrupt) מֵהֵ֖ן (than they) בְּכָל־ (in all) דְּרָכָֽיִךְ׃ (your ways).

48  חַי־ (As live), אָ֗נִי (I) נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH), אִם־ (has not) עָֽשְׂתָה֙ (has done), סְדֹ֣ם (Sodom) אֲחוֹתֵ֔ךְ (your sister) הִ֖יא (she) וּבְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ (and her daughters), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֔ית (you have done), אַ֖תְּ (you) וּבְנוֹתָֽיִךְ׃ (and your daughters). 49  הִנֵּה־ (Behold), זֶ֣ה (this) הָיָ֔ה (was) עֲוֺ֖ן (the guilt) סְדֹ֣ם (of Sodom), אֲחוֹתֵ֑ךְ (your sister) גָּא֨וֹן (pride), שִׂבְעַת־ (fullness) לֶ֜חֶם (of bread), וְשַׁלְוַ֣ת (and the ease) הַשְׁקֵ֗ט (of idleness) הָ֤יָה (was) לָהּ֙ (unto her) וְלִבְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ (and unto her daughters), וְיַד־ (and the hand) עָנִ֥י (of the poor) וְאֶבְי֖וֹן (and needy) לֹ֥א (not) הֶחֱזִֽיקָה׃ (did she strengthen). 50  וַֽתִּגְבְּהֶ֔ינָה (And they were haughty), וַתַּעֲשֶׂ֥ינָה (and they did) תוֹעֵבָ֖ה (an abomination) לְפָנָ֑י (before My face) וָאָסִ֥יר (and I turned aside) אֶתְהֶ֖ן (them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) רָאִֽיתִי׃ס (I have seen).

51  וְשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (And Samaria) כַּחֲצִ֥י (according to the half) חַטֹּאתַ֖יִךְ (of your sins); לֹ֣א (not) חָטָ֑אָה (did sin) וַתַּרְבִּ֤י (and you have multiplied) אֶת־ (-) תּוֹעֲבוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (your abominations) מֵהֵ֔נָּה (beyond theirs) וַתְּצַדְּקִי֙ (and you have justified) אֶת־ (-) אֲחוֹתֵךְ (your sisters) בְּכָל־ (in all) תּוֹעֲבוֹתַ֖יִךְ (the abominations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) עָשִׂיתי׃ (you have done). 52  גַּם־ (So also), אַ֣תְּ׀ (you) שְׂאִ֣י (lift up) כְלִמָּתֵ֗ךְ (your own shame) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) פִּלַּלְתְּ֙ (you have brought justification) לַֽאֲחוֹתֵ֔ךְ (for your sisters), בְּחַטֹּאתַ֛יִךְ (in your sins) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) הִתְעַ֥בְתְּ (you made abhorrent) מֵהֵ֖ן (beyond theirs) תִּצְדַּ֣קְנָה (they are more righteous) מִמֵּ֑ךְ (than you) וְגַם־ (so also), אַ֥תְּ (you) בּ֙וֹשִׁי֙ (be disgraced) וּשְׂאִ֣י (and lift up) כְלִמָּתֵ֔ךְ (your own shame), בְּצַדֶּקְתֵּ֖ךְ (in your justifying of) אַחְיוֹתֵֽךְ׃ (your sisters).

53  וְשַׁבְתִּי֙ (And I will turn back) אֶת־ (-) שְׁבִ֣יתְהֶ֔ן (their captivity), אֶת־ (-) שְׁבִית (the captives) סְדֹם֙ (of Sodom) וּבְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ (and her daughters), וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁבִית (the captives) שֹׁמְר֖וֹן (of Samaria) וּבְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ (and her daughters), וּשְׁבִית (and the captivity) שְׁבִיתַ֖יִךְ (of your captives) בְּתוֹכָֽהְנָה׃ (in their midst). 54  לְמַ֙עַן֙ (So that) תִּשְׂאִ֣י (you may bear) כְלִמָּתֵ֔ךְ (your shame), וְנִכְלַ֕מְתְּ (and be disgraced) מִכֹּ֖ל (by all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשִׂ֑ית (you did), בְּנַחֲמֵ֖ךְ (in your giving comfort) אֹתָֽן׃ (to them).

55  וַאֲחוֹתַ֗יִךְ (And as your sisters), סְדֹ֤ם (Sodom) וּבְנוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ (and her daughters), תָּשֹׁ֣בְןָ (will return) לְקַדְמָתָ֔ן (to their former state), וְשֹֽׁמְרוֹן֙ (and Samaria) וּבְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ (and her daughters) תָּשֹׁ֖בְןָ (will return) לְקַדְמָתָ֑ן (to their former state), וְאַתְּ֙ (and you) וּבְנוֹתַ֔יִךְ (and your daughters) תְּשֻׁבֶ֖ינָה (will return) לְקַדְמַתְכֶֽן׃ (to your⁺ former state). 56  וְל֤וֹא (Not) הָֽיְתָה֙ (has come to be) סְדֹ֣ם (Sodom) אֲחוֹתֵ֔ךְ (your sister) לִשְׁמוּעָ֖ה (as a byword) בְּפִ֑יךְ (in your mouth) בְּי֖וֹם (in the days) גְּאוֹנָֽיִךְ׃ (of your pride), 57  בְּטֶרֶם֮ (before) תִּגָּלֶ֣ה (was uncovered), רָעָתֵךְ֒ (your wickedness) כְּמ֗וֹ (it is like) עֵ֚ת (the time) חֶרְפַּ֣ת (of scorn by) בְּנוֹת־ (the daughters) אֲרָ֔ם (of Aram), וְכָל־ (and all) סְבִיבוֹתֶ֖יהָ (those around her) בְּנ֣וֹת (and the daughters) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (of the Philistines), הַשָּׁאט֥וֹת (those despising) אוֹתָ֖ךְ (you) מִסָּבִֽיב׃ (from all around). 58  אֶת־ (-) זִמָּתֵ֥ךְ (Your wickedness) וְאֶת־ (and) תּוֹעֲבוֹתַ֖יִךְ (your abominations), אַ֣תְּ (you) נְשָׂאתִ֑ים (will bear) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

The Covenant Remembered

59  כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); וְעָשִׂית (and I will do) אוֹתָ֖ךְ (with you) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֑ית (you have done), אֲשֶׁר־ (those) בָּזִ֥ית (having despised) אָלָ֖ה (the oath) לְהָפֵ֥ר (by breaking) בְּרִֽית׃ (the covenant). 60  וְזָכַרְתִּ֨י (And will remember) אֲנִ֧י (I) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֛י (My covenant) אוֹתָ֖ךְ (with you) בִּימֵ֣י (in the days) נְעוּרָ֑יִךְ (of your youth), וַהֲקִמוֹתִ֥י (and I will establish) לָ֖ךְ (with you) בְּרִ֥ית (a covenant) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever). 61  וְזָכַ֣רְתְּ (And you will remember) אֶת־ (-) דְּרָכַיִךְ֮ (your ways), וְנִכְלַמְתְּ֒ (and you will be ashamed), בְּקַחְתֵּ֗ךְ (in your taking) אֶת־ (-) אֲחוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (your sisters), הַגְּדֹל֣וֹת (those older) מִמֵּ֔ךְ (than you). אֶל־ (To) הַקְּטַנּ֖וֹת (those younger); מִמֵּ֑ךְ (than you) וְנָתַתִּ֨י (when I give) אֶתְהֶ֥ן (them) לָ֛ךְ (to you) לְבָנ֖וֹת (as daughters), וְלֹ֥א (not) מִבְּרִיתֵֽךְ׃ (by your covenant).

62  וַהֲקִימוֹתִ֥י (And will establish) אֲנִ֛י (I) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֖י (My covenant) אִתָּ֑ךְ (with you) וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ (and you will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH), 63  לְמַ֤עַן (so that) תִּזְכְּרִי֙ (you may remember), וָבֹ֔שְׁתְּ (and be ashamed), וְלֹ֨א (and not) יִֽהְיֶה־ (will there come to be) לָּ֥ךְ (for you) עוֹד֙ (anymore) פִּתְח֣וֹן (an opening) פֶּ֔ה (of your mouth) מִפְּנֵ֖י (from the face) כְּלִמָּתֵ֑ךְ (of your shame), בְּכַפְּרִי־ (in My making atonement) לָךְ֙ (toward you) לְכָל־ (for all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשִׂ֔ית (you have done), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ס (YHWH).
