This is what the Lord GOD says:
This phrase introduces a divine pronouncement, emphasizing the authority and sovereignty of God. It is a common prophetic formula used to assert that the message is directly from God, underscoring the seriousness and authenticity of the forthcoming judgment. This phrase is used throughout the prophetic books to indicate that the prophet is speaking on behalf of God, not from personal opinion.

Because you poured out your wealth:
The imagery of pouring out wealth suggests reckless and wasteful expenditure, often associated with idolatry and alliances with foreign nations. In the historical context, Israel and Judah frequently sought security through alliances with surrounding nations, often at the cost of their own resources and spiritual fidelity. This phrase can be connected to the broader biblical theme of stewardship and the misuse of God-given resources.

and exposed your nakedness in your promiscuity with your lovers:
Nakedness here symbolizes shame and vulnerability, often used in the Bible to describe spiritual unfaithfulness. The promiscuity with lovers refers to Israel's idolatrous relationships with other nations and their gods, which is likened to adultery. This metaphor is consistent with the prophetic tradition, where idolatry is frequently depicted as spiritual adultery (e.g., Hosea 1-3). The cultural context of the Ancient Near East often involved fertility rites and cultic prostitution, which further illustrates the depth of Israel's unfaithfulness.

and with all your detestable idols:
Idolatry is a central issue in the prophetic literature, representing a direct violation of the first two commandments. The term "detestable" underscores the abomination of idol worship in God's eyes. Archaeological findings have uncovered numerous idols from the period, indicating the prevalence of this practice. The prophets consistently warned against idolatry, which led to spiritual and moral decay.

and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them:
This phrase refers to the horrific practice of child sacrifice, which was part of some pagan religious rituals, notably those associated with the god Molech. This practice is explicitly condemned in the Law (Leviticus 18:21, 20:2-5). The shedding of innocent blood is a grave sin, and it highlights the extent of Israel's apostasy. This act of giving children to idols is a stark illustration of the depth of Israel's spiritual corruption and the severe consequences of turning away from God.

Teaching Points
The Seriousness of Idolatry
Idolatry is not just the worship of physical idols but includes anything that takes the place of God in our hearts. We must examine our lives for modern-day idols.

The Consequences of Unfaithfulness
Just as Israel faced consequences for their spiritual adultery, we too face spiritual and sometimes physical consequences when we turn away from God.

God's Righteous Judgment
God's judgment is always just and righteous. Understanding His holiness helps us appreciate the gravity of sin and the need for repentance.

The Call to Repentance
Despite the harshness of the judgment, God's desire is for His people to return to Him. Repentance is a turning away from sin and a return to God.

The Value of Covenant Faithfulness
Our relationship with God is a covenant, much like a marriage. Faithfulness to God involves loyalty, love, and obedience.

What Does Ezekiel 16:36 Mean
This is what the Lord GOD says

The verse opens with God’s own declaration, underscoring His absolute authority. He is Judge, Covenant-Keeper, and the offended Partner.

• Similar prophetic formulas appear in Isaiah 1:18-20 and Jeremiah 2:19, reminding us that when God speaks, His words stand forever (Isaiah 40:8).

• Here, the charge is not rumor or opinion; it comes directly from “the LORD GOD,” the covenant name that links to Exodus 3:14 and His sovereign rule in Psalm 115:3.

Because you poured out your wealth

Israel had taken the blessings God provided—land, crops, silver, gold—and “poured” them into idolatry.

Hosea 2:8-13 parallels this misuse of gifts: “She did not know that I gave her the grain…the silver and gold, which they used for Baal”.

Malachi 3:8-10 later calls the nation to stop “robbing” God, a reversal of the same sin.

• Practical takeaway: every resource is stewardship; diverting God’s gifts to idols is tantamount to theft from Him (Deuteronomy 8:17-18).

and exposed your nakedness in your promiscuity

Spiritual adultery is pictured as public indecency. What should have been private covenant loyalty became shame on display.

Revelation 3:17-18 echoes the language of nakedness, showing that worldly wealth can mask spiritual poverty.

Isaiah 47:3 pronounces similar judgment on Babylon: “Your nakedness will be uncovered… I will take vengeance.”

• The exposure is voluntary—Israel “exposed” herself, agreeing with James 1:14 that sin begins with our own desires.

with your lovers and with all your detestable idols

“Lovers” points to foreign nations and gods Israel courted for protection—Assyria, Egypt, and Canaanite deities (2 Kings 17:4-12).

Ezekiel 23 expands the metaphor: Oholah and Oholibah lust after Assyrians and Babylonians.

Exodus 20:3-5 forbade “other gods,” making these alliances a double breach—political dependence and religious betrayal.

2 Corinthians 6:14-17 applies the principle: believers are not to be “unequally yoked” with idolatry.

and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them

The climax of corruption is child sacrifice to Molech and related cults.

Leviticus 18:21 warned, “You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech.”

2 Kings 16:3; 21:6; Psalm 106:37-38 record Israel “shedding innocent blood… the blood of their sons and daughters.”

Deuteronomy 12:31 clarifies God’s revulsion: “They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.” Life—God’s image-bearing gift—was traded for superstition.

summary

Ezekiel 16:36 indicts Israel for squandering God’s blessings, flaunting unfaithfulness, forging alliances with idols, and committing the atrocity of child sacrifice. Each phrase builds a courtroom case: sovereign Judge, misused wealth, shameless immorality, adulterous partnerships, and blood guilt. The verse warns that when God’s gifts are perverted into idolatry, judgment is certain—but it also underscores His justice and the enduring call to exclusive covenant loyalty.

(36) Thy filthiness.--Literally, thy brass, i.e., money, which, as said in the previous verses, Israel had lavished upon the surrounding nations. Either gold or silver is the more common term for money, and the prophet appears to have here used brass contemptuously. In this verse the people's apostasies are briefly recapitulated, under the names of adultery and child murder, as the basis for what follows.

Verse 36. - Thy filthiness; literally, thy brass; probably as alluding to the tribute referred to in the previous verses, "brass" being taken as used scornfully for money generally. Possibly, however, as in Jeremiah 6:28, the word stands for the symbol of shame and vileness (compare our brazen faced), and so justifies the rendering of the Authorized Version and Revised Version. Thy nakedness discovered; i.e. interpreting the parable, the intercourse of Judah with foreign nations had simply exposed the points that were moot open to attack (Genesis 42:9). By the blood of thy children. The words may refer specially to the Moloch sacrifices of ver. 21, but may also include the lavish waste of life as well as treasure which had been the consequence of the foreign alliances. The harlot city is indicated as being also a murderess.
